No surgery for Marquis

Despite loose bodies and inflammation in his right elbow, Jason Marquis will not need surgery.

The right-hander received a second opinion today from Cincinnati orthopedist Tim Kremchek, who confirmed the same diagnosis made yesterday by Nationals team doctor Wiemi Douoguih.

Marquis, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday, received a cortisone shot. He will not be allowed to throw for seven-to-10 days.

Doctors anticipate he'll return in six weeks.

Why is it that is hard to believe?

"Bodies in his elbow" but no surgery? BS. What's going to fix the "bodies in the elbow"? Bedrest and epsom salts?

The first three games of this season, all of spring training, and apparently he was having problems at the end of last season. Methinks they may have signed damaged goods.

Well, I'm seeing the orthopedist for my throwing shoulder ;-) Monday, and if I haven't heard anything enlightening by then, I will ask him how loose bodies in an elbow can be handled w/o surgery. It's a headshaker at the minute but I have sure felt sorry for Marquis.

I got diagnosed with "loose bodies" in my elbow four years ago and the fix was to go in arthroscopically and remove them, they don't just go away with rest and salts.. the twinge of pain that occurs when one of the bodies gets in the wrong place and temporarily feels like it locks your elbow shoots right through you, can't imagine it happening with each pitch, that would certainly shut him down.

I was being sarcastic above. I'm sure you cannot rest and soak "foreign bodies" out. They gotta come out; somebody's gotta take them out. Not like passing a kidney stone, yes?

I think Anon @7:19 hit the nail on the head. I think Marquis must have been messed up before the Rox went into post-season play.

The bloggers are right. The Nats, and medical company, are trying to sweep Marquis' problems under the rug. As usual, Rizzo's office is pretending that the fans are 'foolable'! The real world (that's us) is in many worldly ways more sophisticated than what passes for ballclub management.
