Bergmann outrighted to Syracuse

Jason Bergmann, who was designated for assignment by the Nationals on April 15, has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Class AAA Syracuse.

The right-hander was 0-1 with a 15.43 ERA in four games and was removed from the 40-man roster when the Nats needed to clear space for left-hander Scott Olsen.

Bergmann, who has pitched in at least one game each of the Nationals' six seasons, expressed his desire to remain with the organization. Another club, however, could have claimed him off waivers or acquired him via trade over the last week.

The Nationals also could have released the 28-year-old once he cleared, but general manager Mike Rizzo said last week he had no intention of doing that.

What a surprise that no other club wanted Bergmann. Not.

What is the point of keeping a guy around in AAA who has had 6 years to make it with the big league club but has for 6 years running failed to stick? I would think his continuing presence blocks the possible development of other talents coming up from the lower minors.

This guy is like an ex-girlfriend who just keeps calling. Can we rid ourselves on him?

Uh, they have Ron Vilone and MacDougal on Syracuse's roster on the DL. I don't see why you can't call Bergmann veteran depth, at least for now.

Agreed with this. It seems like Syracuse may be competing for the playoffs as well. I don't think Bergmann is useless. I just think that he hasn't justified being on a major league roster or being on the 40 man. Question: Once he's cleared waivers once in the season does that make it possible to move him up and down for the rest of the year? Or would he have to clear if he gets sent down at any time again? If so, he could be stuck in Syracuse for awhile. Probably the ideal situation for all parties would for him to be lights out in Syracuse and be a spare part in some future deal.

Is not useless?

I'm pretty sure he would need to clear waivers each time nad that if they keep him on the 40 man roster. Any why would they, when they know that no ML team wants him anyone. If they remove him ftom the 40 man roster, you likely won't see him in Washington again in 2010.

@Kevin,
I think that he could be support for Syracuse's bullpen. That's it. Syracuse can benefit from winning more games.

Seems like he is a straight-up kind of guy. His presence could be beneficial around the kids in Syracuse. They must feel he is an asset.

Souldrummer: Since Bergmann is now off the 40-man, he'd have to be re-added (in place of someone else) anytime the Nats want to call him up. And then if they wanted to send him down again, he'd again have to be DFA'd and clear waivers.

Mark - Are the Nats paying him his Major League salary?

Andrew: I believe he has a split contract, so he only makes minor-league money when sent down.

Thanks. Given that info I will go against the grain here and say it is a low risk move.

JB'mann did a good job last year so if they can straighten him out in the AAA+ then this could be a good move.
