Morse, Desmond aiming for Tuesday

PHILADELPHIA -- Michael Morse and Ian Desmond each are out of the Nationals' lineup for the third straight day, but each remains hopeful of returning to play Tuesday in Miami.

Morse, who suffered a bruised right hand Friday night when he was hit by a pitch, attempted to play catch this morning at Citizens Bank Park but still was in some pain. One of his biggest concerns was an inability to snap his wrist as he let go of the ball, which led to some awkward-looking throws with head trainer Lee Kuntz.

"I was trying," he said. "But it doesn't work if you don't snap."

Morse has yet to try to swing a bat, but he hopes the pain continues to subside over the next 48 hours and he still believes he can return Tuesday when the Nationals open a two-game series against the Marlins.

"Yeah, definitely," he said.

Desmond, meanwhile, hasn't done anything to test his mild hamstring strain, not wanting to risk any further injury before it's healed. The All-Star shortstop hopes to do some conditioning drills tomorrow and be cleared to play Tuesday night.

Just like previous injuries, I would be willing to bet (even Wonk) that they are not both back in the lineup by Tuesday. I would love to be wrong but both injuries are troublesome. If Desmond did pull the hamstring, it will not be healed in 5 days and I still think Morse has a small bone in there somewhere that is chipped or fractured.
Again, not a doctor, but 40 years of coaching gives me some insight.

Hand specialist for Morse eh? Looks to me like Tyler Moore should be given more chances and LaRoche rested more at this point. They look like they need his bat as he's the only one really doing anything like a heart of the lineup hitter.

Perhaps someone needs to look into our players' conditioning, since they seem to be getting penny-ante injuries over and over.
