Game 130: Cardinals at Nats

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
The Nats open an 11-game homestand tonight against the Cardinals.
Amazing what a difference the outcome of one game can make. Had the Nationals lost last night in Miami, they'd return home today at tense bunch, their collars feeling a little bit tighter than usual thanks to a six-game losing streak. Instead, by beating the Marlins 8-4, they're a loose, upbeat group right now, having just joked around while taking the official 2012 team photo (you can sort of make it out above).

So begins an 11-game homestand, the longest of the season, with the defending World Series champion Cardinals in town the next four days. St. Louis will be up against a familiar foe tonight in Edwin Jackson (a member of that World Series club).

Left-hander Jaime Garcia gets the nod for the Cards, facing a Nats lineup that broke out of its slump in a big way last night. Plenty of updates to come, so please check back...

7:07 p.m. -- And we're underway on a warm, 88-degree night in the nation's capital. Appears to be a late-arriving crowd.

7:15 p.m. -- A very impressive top of the first for Edwin Jackson. He struck out Jon Jay, Carlos Beltran and Allen Craig, displaying some filthy stuff including a 96 mph fastball. Would've had a 1-2-3 inning except he deflected Matt Holliday's comebacker and Danny Espinosa couldn't get to it quite in time to make the play.

7:26 p.m. -- Well, I guess Bryce Harper is feeling pretty hitterish right now, huh? He just crushed a 2-0 meatball from Jaime Garcia to the back of the right-field bullpen for his 15th homer of the season and his third in 24 hours. That was as impressive as any the rookie has hit lately, both because of the picture-perfect swing he put on the pitch and because it came off a tough left-hander. That's only the fifth homer Garcia has ever given up to a left-handed hitter. Nats take a 2-0 lead after one.

7:39 p.m. -- Jackson's first five outs recorded tonight: All strikeouts. Man, he is in a zone, showing off a devastating breaking ball to go along with his fastball. Then Rafael Furcal had the nerve to ground out to second base to end the top of the second, the first out recorded on a ball in play against Jackson tonight. The nerve.

7:53 p.m. -- Three innings down, seven strikeouts for Jackson. You'd think his former teammates would know his repertoire a little better, wouldn't you? Whatever the case, the Nats will gladly take it. They lead 2-0 in the middle of the third.

8:11 p.m. -- Harper takes another Garcia pitch deep to center and ... comes about three feet short of his fourth home run in two nights. No worries, the Nats still scored a run on Adam LaRoche's sac fly to right. So it's now 3-0 after three impressive innings.

8:21 p.m. -- If you know baseball, you've probably heard of the "neighborhood play," where a second baseman turning a double play is given the benefit of the doubt even if his foot is only in the neighborhood of the base. Well, Danny Espinosa wasn't even close to the neighborhood in the top of the fourth ... unless that neighborhood is the size of Montana. So props to umpire Brian Knight for making the right call there, even though the Nats weren't happy about it.

8:37 p.m. -- Make it eight strikeouts for Jackson through five innings. That gives the Nationals pitching staff 1,068 K's for the season, matching their all-time high set in 2010. And there are still 32 1/2 games left to play. They still lead 3-0 in the middle of the fifth.

8:49 p.m. -- How much difference has Werth made on the Nats lineup since his return from a broken wrist? A huge difference. Werth's updated slash line through the fifth inning of tonight's game: .344/.416/.489. Those numbers all just took a big jump up when Werth launched his first homer since coming off the DL, a towering shot over the visitors bullpen to give the Nats a 4-0 lead. There's been some concern Werth couldn't hit for power anymore. Well, he just showed it there in a big way. And that .489 slugging percentage isn't too shabby, either.

9:12 p.m. -- Make it 6-0 Nats as they plate a couple more runs in the bottom of the sixth. And who else but Werth (fielder's choice) and Harper (sharp single over the shortstop's head) to drive in those two runs. It's been a banner couple of days for the top two guys in the lineup.

9:21 p.m. -- A nice, over-the-shoulder catch by Harper to end the seventh (and possibly Jackson's night). His line to this point: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, 105 pitches. Big-time stuff against a big-time lineup. Still 6-0 at the stretch.

9:38 p.m. -- Jesus Flores ropes a two-run single to left, making it 8-0, and this one has officially become a rout. So much so that Davey let Jackson hit for himself. He'll retake the mound for the top of the eighth.

9:46 p.m. -- So much for the shutout. The Cards finally score a run (their first in 28 innings) thanks to Ryan Zimmerman's airmail of a throw to first base. No problem, because Jackson still finished out the inning to complete an eight-inning, 123-pitch masterpiece. Now 8-1 as we go to the bottom of the eighth.

10:06 p.m. -- It's over. Nats win 8-1 as Michael Gonzalez finishes off Jackson's gem. That was a big-time thumping of a big-time opponent, and a nice way to open this 11-game homestand.

Funny, the MLB Network just showed Mark's tweet:

I know we already did this topic to death but here is the CloseCalls on Harper's ejection (this is the site that tracks ejections). You can see from the comments that opinions were very divided. Interesting that not only is this Harper's first ejection, it's the Nationals first ejection of 2012.

Michele, did I read correctly a few threads ago: you're on pace to attend about half of the home games this year? Can that be right? That's a stunning performance. Amazing consistentcy.

Time to get back to my formula. Win every series.

Eugene in Oregon said...

These are some games I really wish I could attend; I can recall Cards-Nats match-ups in the not-too-distant past that were quite exciting, even when the Nats weren't exactly playing great baseball (an extra-inning Nats win over the Cardinals in 2010 was the last game I made it to in DC). And I hope the atmosphere at the park matches the importance of the series.

But at least I'll be able to watch this one live (on MLB.tv); I've been having to watch replays the past six or seven games (albeit without knowing the results). This should be fun. GYFNG!

-Dan- said...

This is the third time this year we've gotten a 2 run lead in the first thanks to a Harper homer, right?

Gonat said...

SteveM, great point.

Swift, big time credit to Werth doing what leadoff guys are supposed to do.

Gonat said...

-Dan-, no 3 HRs in the 1st inning but on June 3rd was a solo jack!

Swift, he believes what he says and says what he believes.

Like it or not, he and Rizzo want hard throwers who can get K's when they really need them to strand baserunners.

I think Harper is seeing the ball well tonight.

(Understatement of the year?)

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Almost

Swift Eagle said...

I'm on board 100% with the pitching philosophy too, hard throwers get wins in October...

A DC Wonk said...

McCatty to EJax, "Strikeouts are bulls--t. Get some quick outs to your fielders".

I don't think it's that simple. Sometimes guys just can't get a bat on your stuff.

Davey mentioned that regarding Dwight Gooden. They wanted him to get less K's, and Davey said, "what? you want me to change how he pitches?"

(Yes, Gooden had problems later, but it was because of too many innings too young, and too much partying)

Gonat said...

Wonk, you are right. Its philosophy.

NatsNut said...

Maybe you guys talked about this already, but all the infield grounders looks like it might be time for another cortisone shot.

Gonat said...

LaRoche swings at ball 3 to help Garcia

Swift Eagle said...

It's also about executing pitches...certainly appears the book on the Nats lineup is to go off speed and breaking balls, but if they're not quality pitches, the Nats will kill fastballs when ahead in the count....

Joe Seamhead said...

Harper induced hustle by Ryan for a base hit. Great throw, greater hustle by Zimm. Morse walks on four pitches. ALR? We'll take the sac fly!

Swift Eagle said...

Somebody Must have missed the game last night, Zimmerman smoked the ball to right 3 times last night, he's fine...

Swift Eagle said...

Also, the Nats are still 15-3 when Werth, Zimmerman, and Morse are in the starting line-up (not including the game when Morse was HBP and left in the 1st inning)

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Hold them again ejax

Gonat said...

Sorry, 1 run in that situation let Garcia off the hook.

Sure, LaR got that Sac Fly but he swings at ball 3 and falls in a 2-1 count then 2-2 and lost count leverage.

Joe Seamhead said...

Well, again you gotta give Werth a lot of credit for his ability to get on base leading off.Too bad to only get one run that inning though.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Molina can't swing without pain. Why goof around with balls

Joe Seamhead said...

Gonat, I'm not saying it was a great AB by ALR but With one out I'll take the sac fly, rather then say a ground ball double play. Would've liked Desi to come through with guys on the corners.

Swift Eagle said...

Wow, now we're not giving the "Neighborhood play" Are they going to start calling that too!!

blovy8 said...

too much to allow there I suppose on the DP

Swift Eagle said...

He better make that call EVERY time now...I'm guessing he won't...

blovy8 said...

just need an out

Gonat said...

Danny has to get the lead runner.

blovy8 said...

make your pitch with the pitcher coming up

Gonat said...

I think the ump thought he had to come off the base to take the throw.

Swift Eagle said...

I'm not blaming Danny there, that call is NEVER made....Unless the base runner is named Jeter...

A DC Wonk said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
Gonat said...

Swift, you don't think the ump thought Zim's throw pulled him off?

Now you have to call that consistently.

Joe Seamhead said...

I had no problem with the ump on that call. Danny was way off the bag. No problemo! EJax looks pretty darn good!

blovy8 said...

Yeah, but it was egregious, he was all the way off the bag and stradling nothing but dirt, not "on his way" off the bag, where one leg is kinda over it. Still, it's kind of in keeping with this whole crew to get noticed.

Gonat said...

Wonk, it was Espi, not Desi

A DC Wonk said...

Thanks, Gonat. Let me rephrase:

I disagree. The "neighborhood" has boundaries. On replay, he was pretty far off the bag -- at least 3 feet. Ump made a good call, imho. Espi came off _way_ too soon for that to be called out.

Gonat said...

Now the Nats go on 7 pitches in this inning. Just not smart the last 5 batters

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Danny still leads NL in K

Swift Eagle said...

We have umps who have trouble with Safe/Out, Fair/Foul, and Ball/Strike....How about they get those right a little more often before enforcing the "look at me" calls like the neighborhood play and ejections for thrown equipment...Get the important stuff right first blue...

Holden Baroque said...

So, following up on my previous post, since exposure to second-hand negativity and complaining destroys brain cells and makes one stupid(er), I wonder, does exposure to stupidity make people complain more?

blovy8 said...

Flores is handling those balls in the dirt really well

Swift Eagle said...

Whoa Sofa, are you saying the Legion of Doom is making me dumber? That ain't not good...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Too many balls 19 batters 33 balls

Holden Baroque said...

Is that former mayor Anthony Williams in the second row behind home, in the red curly-W cap?

blovy8 said...

Man, that's not like Beltran to be that aggressive, pretty cool ending to that inning.

Eugene in Oregon said...

Top of the order coming up; keep the pressure on; don't let up.

Gonat said...

Huge K of the leadoff batter. Didn't think he would throw the slider twice in a row!

Got Beltran out of the way for the 6th inning.

Joe Seamhead said...

I think somebody is very wrong about Werth not having any power anymore.

Swift Eagle said...

Anything can happen of course, but so far the NL teams outside the East just have not looked all that great to me...I mean yes Cin and St Louis have a lot of wins, but they play a lot of games v Hou, CHC, and Mil...and they didn't play the AL East in inter-league either...Nats won 5 of 6 v SF, and we'll see with the new-look Dodgers...

Swift Eagle said...

BOOM goes the Lead-Off Man

MicheleS said...

That was a blast by Werth. About 25k here tonight.

blovy8 said...

Garcia's pitches all look like they're in the 80s, not a whole lot of difference in speed if he's not hitting his spots or particularly deceptive.

Gonat said...

Espi really in a funk again. 5 for his last 37.
