Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER |
Adam LaRoche is on the bench. So is Denard Span. Those two are giving way to Tyler Moore and Scott Hairston. The only left-handed hitter in Davey's lineup is Bryce Harper, who gets bumped to the leadoff spot.
Dan Haren, incredibly the Nationals' best and most-reliable starting pitcher over the last month, gets the ball tonight, trying to erase the memories of last night's 11-1 trouncing at Wrigley Field.
Updates to come...

8:08 p.m. — And we're underway with a ball from Chris Rusin to Bryce Harper. It's another beautiful night at Wrigley Field, 83 degrees at first pitch with the wind blowing out. I would imagine the ball is going to fly again tonight.
8:15 p.m. — And the Nats jump on the board quickly, thanks to Ryan Zimmerman's RBI double into the left-field corner. To be fair, Starlin Castro was just as responsible for the run scoring, though, because the shortstop's inability to turn a 4-6-3 double play on Ian Desmond's tailor-made grounder allowed Desmond ultimately to score on Zimmerman's double. The Nats certainly will take it. They lead 1-0.
8:27 p.m. — Not the cleanest bottom of the first — Desmond let a groundball play him instead of vice-versa and wound up with an error, Haren allowed a stolen base and then threw a wild pitch — but the Nats escape unscathed. Haren got a big strikeout of Nate "Don't Call Me Babe" Schierholtz to end the inning with the 1-0 lead intact.
8:40 p.m. — The Nats put runners on second and third with nobody out in the top of the second, thanks to Tyler Moore's single (he's now 3-for-5 since his return from AAA) and Anthony Rendon's double into the right field corner. It was a bit curious that Trent Jewett didn't wave Moore around third, but his thinking was probably that there were no outs, so no need to risk it. Turns out that was a mistake, because Scott Hairston, Dan Haren and Bryce Harper made three quick outs, hitting the ball a total of 25 feet between them. That's not good. Still 1-0.
9:00 p.m. — The Nats have gotten leadoff singles in each of the three innings so far. Not one has scored.
9:30 p.m. — Bottom of the fifth now, it's 1-1 after Haren served up a solo homer to Brian Bogusevic on a 2-2 splitter in the fourth. Haren gave a look of disbelief as the ball just cleared the short fence in right-center, as if to say: "How in the world did THAT get out of here?" Welcome to Wrigley Field, Dan.
9:42 p.m. — Ryan Zimmerman has made several nice throws in this series on tough plays, but he just airmailed a routine throw for his 18th error of the season. Haren wound up in a jam because of it, with runners on the corners and two outs in the fifth. But he came up big to strike out Anthony Rizzo on a sinker on the inside corner, ending the inning and keeping this a 1-1 game. I'm not sure that's a pitch Haren makes two months ago.
10:00 p.m. — And the Nats re-take the lead in the top of the sixth. Though you'd think four hits and a walk would produce more than one run. Zimmerman got things started with a double off the wall in center. Werth added a single to shallow right, but he wound up running into an out when he did an awkward half-slide into second base on Moore's infield single to short. Strange play, but Moore did get credit for an RBI single with a man in scoring position. Davey tried to go for the jugular when he pinch-hit Adam LaRoche for Scott Hairston against righty reliever Blake Parker. LaRoche got on base, drawing a walk, but he might have been better off putting the ball in play because that left Haren to come through at the plate with the bases loaded. He didn't, as expected, so it's only 2-1 Nats as we go to the bottom of the sixth.
10:20 p.m. — That'll do it for Haren, who authored yet another quality start: six innings of one-run ball. Since returning from the DL on July 8, he's now got a 2.16 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. Oh yeah, he also recorded his first career save. Not bad. Drew Storen in for the bottom of the seventh, with the Nats still up 2-1.
10:31 p.m. — Another 1-2-3 inning of relief for Storen, who has been fantastic since his return from Syracuse last week. He has now retired 12 of the 13 batters he's faced. Very impressive. Still 2-1 heading to the eighth.
10:42 p.m. — The Nationals have put 16 men on base in eight innings tonight. They've scored two runs. Call me crazy, but that doesn't seem like a very good ratio. They should lead by a bunch right now, but it's still only 2-1 as Tyler Clippard enters for the bottom of the eighth.
10:51 p.m. — Denard Span once again displays some impressive range in center field, going way to his right to snag Schierholtz's drive to the warning track. Clippard gets through the eighth. Onto the ninth, the Nats still up 2-1 as Rafael Soriano warms up.
11:00 p.m. — OMG! A hit! With a runner in scoring position! Desmond singles home Harper, scoring a big insurance run in the top of the ninth. It's 3-1 now.
11:13 p.m. — OMGx2! Another hit! With a runner in scoring position! Span doubles home Zimmerman. It's 4-1 now.
11:22 p.m. — It's over, though Soriano did give up another homer to Donnie Murphy. Nats win 4-2.

About time with the righty platoon.
Bill miller HP ump 16 year vet. From southern California.
I like this. I really wanted to se TyMo play a lot of first base, and I will settle for a little platooning.
The Buffalo hitting fifth too. This could be fun to watch. I just don't know about Desi hitting second.
MNF -- re the curse, no, that's based on the bad karma from their being so presumptuous. No room for more presumption after last night's thumping. All gets washed away.
Good thing is that with Laz Diaz at third, we have Bryce as our only lefty starter for him to look at check swings. Diaz is of course one of the worst prima donna incompetent "look at MEEEE!" umps going, so Bryce, no check swings, OK?
Buffalo should always be 5th Desi 6th firstbaseman 7th
ugh, why is Ichiro not playing tonight's game? he just needs one hit. come on joe!
Panam eliminates Taipei on a walk off HBP
He will get it on a pinch hit
I don't want to watch a Yankee game without Ichiro in it until 7th or 8th inning.
Then watch the Nats
The only problem with batting Ramos high in the order is that it's almost impossible for him to score from second on a base hit. Of course, we don't hit with RISP anyway so it's a non-issue.
that's a given but I don't want to miss his 4000th hit.
MNF, that was some finish, eh? Taipei was up 7-4 in the bottom of the 6th (last inning in LL). Their 3rd baseman booted a grounder with 2 outs to extend the inning, and then let another through the 5.1 hole to allow 2 runs to tie it. The inning should have been over about 15-20 pitches before the hbp (on an 0-2 pitch).

MNF, I really love your enthusiasm for the Nats. I also admire that you always think they are going to win. And if they don't,you assume they will win the next game. I just love that.
Heard Texas might be interested in Haren.
Also,
John Lannan
The lefty starter is likely finished for the season after a visit with team physician, Dr. Michael Ciccotti, revealed he had a ruptured tendon in his left knee, assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said.
Proefrock added that Lannan will seek a second opinion in Los Angeles with renowned orthopedist, Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
Lannan is on the disabled list for the second time this season. He missed two months with a strained quadriceps near his left knee. A free-agent pickup in the offseason, Lannan went 3-6 with a 5.33 ERA in 14 starts in his first year with the Phillies.
If Lannan is finished for the season, he goes into the winter as an arbitration-eligible player.
Lol. Apparently, LaRoche is taking grounders at short. Just for fun, of course. I don't think Davey's gone that senile yet.
Hmmmmm, NL. Looks like Rizzo coming out pretty good on the players he decided not to keep. Hope Lannan recovers ok.
Ok, Johnny and Ray-- watch your mouths in pre- game tonight!!
I don't think Haren and Texas is a good fit given Haren's HR/FB%.
I just want a win tonight.... Hope it's a better outcome than last night...
I just has to be, don't you think?
Wil Nieves is hitting 331???
SonnyG10 said...I just don't know about Desi hitting second.
Sure, why not? With his renowned plate discipline and bat control, Desi's a natural #2. You can always count on Desi to advance the runners...
/sarcasm off
Look on the bright side. If we get whipped again it will spare us from another blown save by Sorry oh no.
Sorry to hear about Lannan. Can't bring myself to hate him, even if he is with the Phils.
Back up the truck!,
Hating Lannan cause he is a Phil was like hating Art Monk cause he was an Eagle. Nice Brian Mitchell on the other hand....
And you know what bothers me? I'm looking forward to watching the game tonight. Sadist
Here's something funny:
http://thenationalsarchive.com/2013/08/20/source-names-used-by-washington-nationals-during-road-trips/
Panama's first 4 run all scored after the catcher thought it was a force at home . Bases loaded 1 out no run. Ball hit to third. He stepped on third then threw home. He strpped instead of tagging. Then threw tofirst. He didnt realize third baseman stepped on the bag. Te runner was safe at home. Should have been over.
Next batter 3 run homer.
Tonight I suspect 7-3 win.
Will keep looking Isharo too.
Are they on probation.
There is a wib current to right center
David-- hysterically funny!!! And we really need some comic relief.
My favorite was Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen and the Zimmermen(n).
Wrigley field is always great to watch games from.
The old links I dont know how to get them on my phone, but I will trust it was funny.
Google Nats Archive and you can probably find the pseudonyms article. So it's one thing to lose a one run game to the Barves. But losing to the Cubs is just a whole other thing entirely.
swami @ 7:05: Exactly.
Amazing that Dan Haren is the current 'hot' pitcher -- certainly never saw that coming.
I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about baseball in general, but there are three players in the Cubs line-up I have never, ever heard of and another I had only marginal knowledge of. I can only hope that the Nats can beat such a line-up, but after the past few weeks I'm not nearly as confident as some other posters.
Eugene- I thought that last night :(. Anyway- it's kind of nice that Hairston is starting tonight in his home town. Almost doesn't matter what the lineup is at this point. Let's pull names out of a hat or go Little League and play everyone. Hoping for some competitive , well played baseball this last few weeks, no matter how things end up.
I know it's only a one hour time difference, but it just feels so late already.
Haren please pitch a better first inning than our last 2 starts.
What is it with our starters and the first inning? By the way, is that our impression or do the facts back that up? I would not even know how to go about looking that up.
Did Johnny and Ray jinx Haren. Close call, but I think there was no guarentee so I think no.
Gio's ERA is about 5 in the first.
Have no numbers on the other.
Speaking of Little League, how about Brno in the Little League World Series? I've written here before about baseball in Central Europe -- particularly the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but also Poland and Hungary -- so I was delighted to see a Moravian team in the LLWS. If we can only get baseball back into the Olympics, those countries' Olympic committees will subsidize the LL (and follow-on) programs and you'll see the sport continue to grow throughout that region. There's some real potential there, but we lost ground when the IOC dropped baseball and softball a few years back.
DP - thanks for that; I needed the laugh.
F.P.: "The Situation". :-)
OK, time to strap on the armor and get ready to rumble. Payback time for the cubs.
They almost did a jinx but Johnny cauggt himself. he said The Cubs are 3-1 againxt the Nats . That will, (Then he corrected) most likely will change tonight.
True- it was hoped that the WBC would compensate, but it's just so hard to schedule it.
Remember when we just could not beat the Marlins?? This game is just so random.
MNF, you need a lap-top, you would be much happier than typing on a phone...I bought a Samsung chromebook for $249 about 9 months ago...12 inch screen, weighs 2.5 lbs, has like 6+ hours of battery life & I just fire it up (does so in like 5 seconds), immediately connected...watch sports, Nats, etc. on TV but am also able to catch up on e-mail, NI, etc...love it!!
Who wants to see some first inning offense????? Go Nats!!!!!!!!
Harper has done his job this series.
Yeah manassas Stop sittin on that wallet
Thanks Castro.
That look like an easy dp. Thanks Castro
I loathe Desi and his first pitch swinging....
Called it!!
What a hit by Ryan.... Good going Ryan....
I will be ready for next season
Will get it before next season
Cub fielding looking like us.
Gusty send by Jewitt... I would have cussed him something serious if Desi was called out...
Lets go Buffalo
Keep the line moving!!
Run Werth?
Yep you run him to stay out of tge doyble play
With Ramos speed, think you have to get aggressive and send Jayson for the steal...
I felt the grounder coming.
0 for 1 Risp
I called that before pitch 1 Davey refused to listen.
Big Cat and I call for lots of steal with first and third 1 ut with a good base runner on first and slow batter.
Oh goodness...
Sigh,... Come on Desi...
Sigh. And the muff by Desi. Didn't this happen last night?
Zim last night
Zim was the culprit last night. Our failure is a true team effort.
At least Zim's he had tomove. Desi was a piece of cake.

I may be needing a new laptop soon, Paul. Maybe I'll try to check out your model. My current laptop battery won't last a whole ball game.
Followed by the steal by Lake. Groundhog Day.
If Werth had run more likely 2-0 now
Here we go with the wild pitches again. Ugh!
Error, steal, wild pitch. Nationals baseball, y'all.
Paul, you got Windows 8 or some other OS?
Dan, you da man!
Haren bails Desi out, but did cost him 6 pitches.
Nice pitch....
I hate that ATT comercial.
c'mon TyMo. Show what you got.
There is absolutely no way Tyler hits that ball earlier in the year.
3 hits now
Nice AB for Moore.
as Alfred Hitchcock would say....Good evening................
Why the hell didn't T Moore go??? Had he gone, that is a run....
Put the ball in play Hairston.
Okay, I should've clarified how to put the ball in play...
Good job Rendon ,. Now 4 for 6
Hairston hits lefties ss good as Span?
A good result for Rendon, but he takes too many first pitches for called strikes.
Sonny, am telling you check it out and I am not a computer geek so there may be something out there better but a good neighbor has a computer biz and sat down with me for 15 mins and asked what I wanted to use a lap-top for, blah, blah...I have another one I use for work, other business, etc...so what I wanted is just a small one to goof off on, wanted it to be light, long battery life but easy to carry and a decent screen size. Go on youtube and type in samsung chromebook - there is a real good tutorial on there or just google it, lots of info...but the one I got was the $249 model - didn't need all the bells & whistles...best purchase in a long time.
Oh my...this is painful.
That was terrible... We didn't score at all....
Lather, rinse, repeat.
Hairston, really?
Those 3 at bats were pathetic.
Hairston just needed to bunt toward first. Why are they so against situational bunting.
That defense line up was easy to bunt against.
0 for 4 RISP
I'm pretty sure that the Nats are going to break the record for worst batting average when men on 2nd and 3rd and no one out, as well as 2 men on with no one out. Oh for a sacrifice fly!
That throw by Hairston...
Hairston is a waste.... And then that noodle arm throw... Ugh...
Again, why didn't DJ send Moore on the 3-2 pitch.....
Aggravating...
I really wanted to think Rizzo had some insight in picking up Hairston, but he has shown himself not to carry the greatest intellect. Getting thrown out of a marathon game, and then not bunting against the heavily shifted infield. Did anyone else see that shift? A bunt down the 1B line and a run scores, another runner moves to 3rd and he probably gets on base.
I can see it from here.
Why didn't Tyler score on the double? Hairston please. Man they stink.
What a year...how can you be so awful for so long and never adjust your approach.
They really need a manager and coaches that teaches them how to do the little things.
And lets not forget once again Desi horrible DP ball that fortunately was muffed.
I think if I were Trent Jewett I would have sent Moore home. Even if he's nailed, good chance Rendon can get to 3rd with 1 out. And, the way this team hits with runners in scoring position, we gotta run til they throw you out.
Haren pitching tough tonight.
Consider the ipad....Apple rules
This is not what we signed up for.Our first baseman makes a mundane routine play and FP and Carp gush about it being such a nice play. Gag. The highlight of this game so far has been Dan Haren.
Always send the the runner...best chance to score is an errant throw
Paul, thanks for info @ 8:37. I'll check it out.
FP dropping the H-Rod jokes.
MNF, you might want to consider a tablet. I got a Google Nexus a couple of weeks ago and haven't opened my laptop since. On-screen keyboard lets you swipe across the keys and its intelligence figures out what you're typing. Great for guys with fat fingers. All my posts tonight are from the tablet.
Sigh.
Well now. That move by Desi was kind of, ahem, ....Span like.
So, wait.... I thought Dejesus was gone?????
Damn, Ryan didn't even seem to make a play for that...
Dang, Harriston can't throw for crap!
DeJesus was placed on waivers. That doesn't mean he's gone. Dan Haren was also placed on waivers. It doesn't necessarily mean anything, although it's odd to place a guy on waivers you just signed.
Harper and Hairston both swung so early they could only hit it off the end.
Score one for Ghost on that one, Mrs.B. If Ryan had been playing deeper he might've gotten to that ball.
There were other clubs interested in DeJesus. Rizzo wanted to know how badly they wanted him...possible trade.
We are gonna score 3 runs this inning... I'm still pissed off about DJ/Trent not sending T Moore on the 3-2 pitch.... I mean where is the sense...
man, Rusin looks like he throws batting pracice pitches. Why aren't we killing this guy? Don't we do batting practice?
Ok, a little luck for Wilson. How about a HR, Tyler?
C'mon, Ty. Think AAA.
That was a less-than-good AB, Tyler. Gotta lay off the soft stuff.
Maybe next time, Moore....
Swami? Where are you?
Rendon, just a split-sec too early.
Another called strike on the first pitch for Rendon, an 89mph FB.
And then ... whatever that was.
I mean... I just...
Waivers in baseball is not the same as waivers in foitball.
Baseball many are on waivers. If sone claims you may pull back waivers. Then workout a trade or not.
Was waivers doesn't mean is your off the team.
Iff tge team is DFA designated for assignment.
I'm sick of the double standards on here. Too many free passes for some while others are held under a different standard. There is not one player on this team exceeding expectations. That includes Dnesi, Rendon, and Harper. Not to mention Strasburg, Zimermann, and Gio.
But you all know what? I love 'em all!, GYFNG!!!
Only outfield arm worse in the majors is Juan Pierre.
And just like that, it is tied up....
Another home run by someone who doesnt hit homers.
Can we hit homers too?
Haren in July/August looking like JZimn in April/May/June, seriously who would have called that?
I have been very impressed with Haren all season with his attitude but more impressed with his pitching the last two or so months. No way he is worth $13M or whatever we are paying him but he has been solid lately.
HR just hurt though, haha...serves me right!
i think we filled our quota for this series last night.
Manassas, I tend to agree with you regarding the worst arm in the OF, though "worst" is a relative term. BtW where is Nyjer Morgan?
They traded for DeJesus who they claimed on waivers.
Appsrently a team below also put in claim. Nats are hoping to trade him to tgat team for a prospect from that team they want.
Good move if you get that prospect.
Not a bad move if you like some prospect the other team will trade.
Weirdest shift I ever saw for a Mendoza line hitter like Hairston.
They dont let the ball get deep enough in the zone.
With Haren's blazing speed, Murphy had to hurry that throw right now.
At the beginning of this year, Nats fans were saying "The Nats deserve better than Dan Haren". Watching this game, I wonder if Dan Haren deserves better.
Erth? Clip,?
that's how you swing for a HR. Yeah Desi!
Just make sure you connect next time!
Worst bonehead wherever he is.
Bunt hard straught atRizzo easy hit every time.
Faraz,
The pitchers have been told not to leg out infield grounders unless absolutely necessary. Pitching is as much about legs as it is about arms. If it were up to Haren, I'm sure he'd be gunning down the line every time.
There homer was not swung hard. Swung quick and barrelled up.
MNF I totally agree. As a "professional hitter" he should be able to.
Memo to Rizzo: Not every bottle contains lightning.
going on 4 runs in 29 innings
Depot, even without the instruction, Haren is known as slow runner and I was poking fun at that.
I agree with pitcher notvrunning hard unless double play ball 1 out man on third.
I saw that coming as soon as he set his feet.
Damn it zim
Steve Sax at 3B...tough to watch.
That looked off from the release, Ryan...
I swear that I'm not a Desi basher, but I also think he gets too many feathers in his cap.
Now Ryan? You've run out of feathers a long time ago.
About flipping DeJesus
Sure, it's a good move if you can pull it off, tho it's hard he'll bring much in return, esp, since he's now a player the Nats don't really want at a price they don't really want either.
Harper 7 plate appearances in Wrigley Field.
With no one on 3 for 3 with a walk.
Man on 0 for 3.
this all about a lack of situational hitting..I sound like a broken record but it will not matter how well Nats pitch if the team continues to be the WORST situational hitting team in all of MLB
Barney takes a pitch not in the zone flicks the bat. For a hit. Not swung hard at all.
Cubs might be bad but some of tgeir hitters at least understand what to do
12Th in the NL BUT Feels worse.
Thank you, Dan Haren.
haren doing his job
If Ryan takes more than 1 crow hop, he might as well put the baseball in his pocket cause its not going anywhere near the first baseman.
Our player going to the Cubs probably about as.The one we would get.
Really nothing big either way.
the good news is Nats will not be eliminated by Sept 1, bad news is they will probably be eliminated before Sept 15th.
Apparently, the wind is only blowing out at the bjttom half of each inning?
Remember just a few years ago when you could have a legitimate debate over whether Ryan Zimmeran or Evan Longoria was a better all around third baseman? (sigh)
That seems correct.
If that were a Cub, it would've been a home run.
If Nats can win series then maybe they can take it to final weekend...that would be fine even if they do not get in
This is weird zim's ball hit hard a double, the Cub homer floats into the stands not hit nearly as hard.
meaning winning every series from now on
Cabrearra cant field eutger but he hits great.
We agree
Runner on 3B, no outs - how will they fail to get him home this time?
Now 1 for 5 RISP 0 RUNS
Betting against a triple play.
Line drive right at the 2B. Are you kidding me right now?
Ok, they score the run, but WTF was that, Jayson?
Werth is normally a fantastic baserunner, but that was bad.
Rarely see Werth run poorly.
Damn, Werth, you bungling bafoon.
Lost another run.
He pitches awful.
But very poor base running getting doubled off etc we dont score much.
yeah, release him.
He anticipate ball in riggt as he saw tgrow coming way off line.
So not a fool, just poorly done.
