Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER |
Adam LaRoche is on the bench. So is Denard Span. Those two are giving way to Tyler Moore and Scott Hairston. The only left-handed hitter in Davey's lineup is Bryce Harper, who gets bumped to the leadoff spot.
Dan Haren, incredibly the Nationals' best and most-reliable starting pitcher over the last month, gets the ball tonight, trying to erase the memories of last night's 11-1 trouncing at Wrigley Field.

8:08 p.m. — And we're underway with a ball from Chris Rusin to Bryce Harper. It's another beautiful night at Wrigley Field, 83 degrees at first pitch with the wind blowing out. I would imagine the ball is going to fly again tonight.
8:15 p.m. — And the Nats jump on the board quickly, thanks to Ryan Zimmerman's RBI double into the left-field corner. To be fair, Starlin Castro was just as responsible for the run scoring, though, because the shortstop's inability to turn a 4-6-3 double play on Ian Desmond's tailor-made grounder allowed Desmond ultimately to score on Zimmerman's double. The Nats certainly will take it. They lead 1-0.
8:27 p.m. — Not the cleanest bottom of the first — Desmond let a groundball play him instead of vice-versa and wound up with an error, Haren allowed a stolen base and then threw a wild pitch — but the Nats escape unscathed. Haren got a big strikeout of Nate "Don't Call Me Babe" Schierholtz to end the inning with the 1-0 lead intact.
8:40 p.m. — The Nats put runners on second and third with nobody out in the top of the second, thanks to Tyler Moore's single (he's now 3-for-5 since his return from AAA) and Anthony Rendon's double into the right field corner. It was a bit curious that Trent Jewett didn't wave Moore around third, but his thinking was probably that there were no outs, so no need to risk it. Turns out that was a mistake, because Scott Hairston, Dan Haren and Bryce Harper made three quick outs, hitting the ball a total of 25 feet between them. That's not good. Still 1-0.
9:00 p.m. — The Nats have gotten leadoff singles in each of the three innings so far. Not one has scored.
9:30 p.m. — Bottom of the fifth now, it's 1-1 after Haren served up a solo homer to Brian Bogusevic on a 2-2 splitter in the fourth. Haren gave a look of disbelief as the ball just cleared the short fence in right-center, as if to say: "How in the world did THAT get out of here?" Welcome to Wrigley Field, Dan.
9:42 p.m. — Ryan Zimmerman has made several nice throws in this series on tough plays, but he just airmailed a routine throw for his 18th error of the season. Haren wound up in a jam because of it, with runners on the corners and two outs in the fifth. But he came up big to strike out Anthony Rizzo on a sinker on the inside corner, ending the inning and keeping this a 1-1 game. I'm not sure that's a pitch Haren makes two months ago.
10:00 p.m. — And the Nats re-take the lead in the top of the sixth. Though you'd think four hits and a walk would produce more than one run. Zimmerman got things started with a double off the wall in center. Werth added a single to shallow right, but he wound up running into an out when he did an awkward half-slide into second base on Moore's infield single to short. Strange play, but Moore did get credit for an RBI single with a man in scoring position. Davey tried to go for the jugular when he pinch-hit Adam LaRoche for Scott Hairston against righty reliever Blake Parker. LaRoche got on base, drawing a walk, but he might have been better off putting the ball in play because that left Haren to come through at the plate with the bases loaded. He didn't, as expected, so it's only 2-1 Nats as we go to the bottom of the sixth.
10:20 p.m. — That'll do it for Haren, who authored yet another quality start: six innings of one-run ball. Since returning from the DL on July 8, he's now got a 2.16 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. Oh yeah, he also recorded his first career save. Not bad. Drew Storen in for the bottom of the seventh, with the Nats still up 2-1.
10:31 p.m. — Another 1-2-3 inning of relief for Storen, who has been fantastic since his return from Syracuse last week. He has now retired 12 of the 13 batters he's faced. Very impressive. Still 2-1 heading to the eighth.
10:42 p.m. — The Nationals have put 16 men on base in eight innings tonight. They've scored two runs. Call me crazy, but that doesn't seem like a very good ratio. They should lead by a bunch right now, but it's still only 2-1 as Tyler Clippard enters for the bottom of the eighth.
10:51 p.m. — Denard Span once again displays some impressive range in center field, going way to his right to snag Schierholtz's drive to the warning track. Clippard gets through the eighth. Onto the ninth, the Nats still up 2-1 as Rafael Soriano warms up.
11:00 p.m. — OMG! A hit! With a runner in scoring position! Desmond singles home Harper, scoring a big insurance run in the top of the ninth. It's 3-1 now.
11:13 p.m. — OMGx2! Another hit! With a runner in scoring position! Span doubles home Zimmerman. It's 4-1 now.
11:22 p.m. — It's over, though Soriano did give up another homer to Donnie Murphy. Nats win 4-2.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 287 of 287 Newer› Newest»It seemed like Jayson couldn't stop his momentum...
Seamhead, Nyjer's in the Japanese Central League.
Bases loaded, but just like against the Giants, Dan Haren is up.
Once again, a little bad luck, a little bad execution. Ramos lined to right to the 2B. Bad Luck. Werth overran the base, bad execution. And then Haren comes up with the bases loaded, bad luck. 2013 Nationals.
I knew that, Candide. We were talking worst outfielder arms.
Uhm - why didnt DJ PH for Haren?
Probably doesn't trust his pen Mrs B
Because the bullpen has been overused and you don't want to take out your starter who was dealing in the 5th inning.
No one was warmed up to relieve him.
How about because Haren hs pitched pretty darned good so far?
Great catch, Desi!
Need to bring in all the bases. Ramos can't get the ball to the bases where they're at.
Ichiro comes in as bsae runner and scores to end the game in b9.
Through 6 RISP Nats 2 for 8. Cubs 0 for 8
Uhm... Bases loaded, you are on a roll and you don't PH for your pitcher who was near 90 pitches...
Sorry don't agree with that... DJ should have PH'd for him, get some runs....
E is at 3999 after the day game correct?
MrsB @ 10:02pm, b/c Haren may be our best hitter, haha.
MrsB.... perhaps because Dan Haren is not a bad hitter, and ultimately, Harp hasn't hit with RISP?
Itwas about 10 eastern and you wanted Davey to think all thst.
Hahahah, Paul - don't make me laugh... I just don't think it was a good trade off... For 1 more inning, you sacrificed bases loaded...
i hope buffoon was spelled wrong on purpose. anything else would be dum.
FP put curse on HARPER. Compared eye to Bonds and immediately takes a fast ball for strike 3.
Ian fouled that ball because he swung to hard.
For those Monty Python fans, I wonder if Roger Bernadina's release went something like this from the Life of Brian.

Rule of thumb for almost all manager if the starter is pitching fine you do not PH before he pitches 6 innings.
Davey same as all others.
Understand your thought, but managers almost never do it.
Two errors probably cost Haren another inning.
Bullpen will have to hold for three innings.
Carp is an idiot we have stranded 8. He's been off 2 innings in a row.
Easy math. 31 at bats - 21 outs - 2 runs = 8 LOB.
Not rocket science.
Storen, like the leg kick, hey, if it works...am impressed he made an adjustment, tough for pitchers to do.
like this Lake kid tho.
Another 1-2-3 for Drew.
Storen really looking good since his return from AAA.
Drew did well fixibg himself at Syracuse. Hope Matteus does the same.
Drew 5.44 ERA now
take it easy buffalo...PR?
And that's why we kept C Tracy on the team!!!!
Score!!!!!!
2 for 10 RISP.
Stranded 10.
Davey goes with Tracy over DeJesus. Even if you don't like DeJesus, he can't possibly do worse than Tracy. I don't get it. Both are lefties.
feel like I am watching an old guys softball game with that hit Chad!
awful.
He forgot DeJesus was on the team. Its after 10 eastern. Past his bedtime.
sorry, meant weak line drive...Chad!
That is a really unfair comment about Davey.
He stays up late all the time.
again...pitching is very good...does not matter if team can not hit
Is Sorry Oh No! coming in?
WOD
of course..I bet he blows it too
Span is great as a defensive replacement.
He has found his niche!
I mean... I feel like the Nats aren't winning...
Nats need 3 more runs...SORRYaino will give up at least 2
Harper's obp is exactly 100 points above his average.
In spite of everything, that is kick ass.
Bryce has 2 hits in each of his last 3 games. Hopefully that means he's heating up. We need him to.
Whoa
Trapped! Isn't that a Bruce song?
Geeze Harp!
Bryce is Rice!
Good to see Bryce hitting against lefties....
8an didnt swing as hard, but better result.
Who came up with Sorry Oh No! I can't get that nickname out of my head....
Oh no!
yes sir ok now 1 more needed
Man, we came close to losing that run.
does SorryO have to close???
They were banking on Ryan hitting the ball to right
Ian had a hit not swinging hard. Take note.
Werth now 7 at bats from qualufying.
Nats could teach a clinic in giving runs away. 3-ball count and they run Desmond with nobody out. Next pitch, ball 4 - would have been bases loaded with 0 out and Ramos up instead of 1st and 2nd with 1 out and a potential double play. I just don't get the logic. I hope the next manager we get makes mentally being in the game just as important as physically being talented.
Now Soriano won't be motivate because he has a 3 run lead.
Way to go Span, MVP of game.
Span with the big hit... Good to see!
Two hits with RISP in the same inning! Sweet Fancy Moses!
Actuakly tge count was 2-2, and zim took the pitch for ball 3
Span hasn't played enough innings to qualify. Haren is player of the game. Span is well appreciated, however.
Hahaha... Candide - I was wondering if someone was gonna say a SFM... Putrid with RISP..
Oh no, sorry's coming in.
Have Someone stretching preparing to warm up if needed.
Please, Soriano, no walks. And MNF you are right - I stated it incorrectly. Still don't think you send Desi, but hopefully it won't cost him since Span came through - perhaps DeJesus signing helped...
And as I say it, 4-2. Time to warm up Randy Knorr.
.....um.
Well, what's new. At least he didn't walk someone in front of the HR
soriano...the 13 million dollar HROD
but I'm not bitter
Another hanger blasted.
Who is warming up.
Better than a walk....
Wow that Cub just bailed us out. That was ball 4.
but I was at Thursday's game...hard to forget
Got lucky should have walked second guy.
That was one of those pitches that look like a strike, but pretty high risk pitch....
Long firickin' game.
I called it at 10:53,did I not
put that shirt back in
Not as long as the shortest Red Sox vs. Yankees game.
Only hit hard by two batters....
So who wants Dan Haren back next year?
Untucked, but man...
Dammit! Sorry-Oh-No didn't deserve to untuck. That buffoon giving up a home run just yanks my chain. We need to HRod this guy and let Storen or Clippard close. This guy is trying to set a record for blown saves. Grrrrrrrrr!
