Game 69: Nats at Phillies

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
PHILADELPHIA — Hello from Citizens Bank Park, and I must say it's actually nice (for a change) to say that. I'm back on full-time duty after my brief stint on the non-DL, and I've picked quite an intriguing matchup for my return to the beat: the opener of a Nationals-Phillies series with none other than John Lannan on the mound to face his old team for the first time.

Lannan, non-tendered by the Nats over the winter, signed a $2.5 million contract with Philadelphia but made only three starts before straining his left quadriceps muscle, an injury that cost him two months. You can only imagine his motivation tonight, both to make a strong return from the DL and to shut down his old ballclub (not to mention beat the guy who the Nationals essentially signed to take his spot: Dan Haren).

When Lannan looks at the opposing lineup, he won't see a whole lot of familiar names. Davey Johnson is going with a group even more depleted than usual tonight, with Adam LaRoche and Denard Span each out (in addition to Bryce Harper and Wilson Ramos). Span looked pretty hampered yesterday after he fouled a pitch off his right foot. LaRoche has no known injury, but he's been slumping a bit lately and he hasn't had a day off in quite some time.

Plenty of updates to come live from the ballpark, and I'll also be appearing on Comcast SportsNet at 6 p.m., so be sure to tune in there and check back here...

7:06 p.m. — And we're underway as the Phillies' John Lannan (that still sounds weird, doesn't it?) fires strike one to longtime Nats teammate ... Jeff Kobernus. Uh, maybe that's not exactly how John envisioned this happening. Anyways, we're underway.

7:15 p.m. — Wait, do my eyes deceive me or did a member of the Nationals lineup just actually produce an RBI single with a man in scoring position? Unbelievable. Jayson Werth drills a base hit to left, bringing home Anthony Rendon from second. This came after Rendon drew a one-out walk, and after Ryan Zimmerman was hit in the foot by a pitch from Lannan. Or, I should say, convinced home plate umpire Mike DiMuro he was hit in the foot. DiMuro didn't initially call it, but Zim pleaded his case and wound up getting the free base. Bizarre. Nats lead 1-0 after a half-inning.

7:37 p.m. — A 1-2-3 bottom of the first for Dan Haren, after which the Nats went to work again against Lannan. They got a pair of singles from the bottom of their lineup (Suzuki and Lombardozzi) but couldn't deliver after that. So, despite five men on base in two innings, they've still scored only the one run. Hmm, have we seen this act before?

7:48 p.m. — Well, it took four batters tonight before somebody homered off Haren. Ryan Howard wasn't cheated on this one, either. He destroyed a 2-2, letter-high pitch way back into the second deck in right field, a bomb. That's 18 homers now allowed by Haren this year, a staggeringly high total. So it's 1-1 after two.

8:11 p.m. — Now that was a weird inning, the bottom of the third. It included back-to-back walks from Haren, who entered tonight with a ridiculously good, 6-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. It then featured a strikeout of Domonic Brown with the bases loaded. Then it ended with Delmon Young blooping a double down the right-field line, just in front of a diving Jayson Werth. That brought two runs home, but Werth and Rendon combined to catch Howard straying too far off third base. So the inning ended without further damage, but the Nats now trail 3-1.

8:27 p.m. — So, Suzuki and Lombardozzi are now 4-for-4 tonight, with back-to-back doubles in the fourth bringing home another run. Go figure. The deficit is now 3-2 after Haren retired the side in the bottom of the fourth.

8:47 p.m. — Five innings down, and Haren continues to labor. He gave up a run in the top of the fifth, a direct result of an easy stolen base allowed to Ben Revere. Revere wound up scoring from second on Howard's two-out, RBI single. So it's 4-2 Phillies and Haren's already at 101 pitches. There's finally action in the Nats pen, with Ross Ohlendorf warming and likely entering for the sixth. Lannan, meanwhile, is done for the night. His final line: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HBP, 92 pitches. He's in line for the win.

9:03 p.m. — I have to admit, I was surprised when Haren came back out for the sixth, sitting on 101 pitches. But he retired the bottom of the Phillies lineup in order, so he kept this a 4-2 deficit as we move to the seventh. Eight straight Nats batters have been retired.

9:10 p.m. — Haren's final line: 6 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 115 pitches. Not his worst outing at all, but still lacking. He's in line for his ninth loss of the year because his teammates have gone silent at the plate. Eleven consecutive Nats batters have been retired by Lannan and Mike Stutes. Still 4-2 as we reach the seventh-inning stretch.

9:18 p.m. — On a positive note: How about that Ian Krol? Another 1-2-3 inning of relief from the lefty, who has certainly impressed in his limited time here. Still 4-2 going to the eighth.

9:32 p.m. — Whoa, a two-out RBI single from Desmond in the top of the eighth, trimming the lead to 4-3. They certainly needed that. But they still need one more, and now they're down to their final three outs, with Jonathan Papelbon warming in the pen.

9:52 p.m. — Classic Tyler Clippard eighth inning there. He loaded the bases yet somehow emerged without allowing a run. So we go to the ninth, and it'll be Suzuki, Lombardozzi and Tracy against Papelbon. If anybody gets on, it'll be Bernadina.

10:02 p.m. — Sweet Fancy Moses! Chad Tracy, down 0-2 with two outs in the ninth, lofts a game-tying homer down the right-field line. The second time he's done that in three days. It's 4-4 and we're heading to the bottom of the ninth. Unbelievable.

10:17 p.m. — And for the second time in four days, Fernando Abad gives up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. This time, it was three singles in the bottom of the ninth, the last a two-out base hit up the middle by Domonic Brown. Nats lose 4-3 and fall back below the .500 mark.

I realized what I written too late, Ghost. I still felt that though he has allowed an awful lot of contact, Haren was a victim of Kobernus' inexperience.

Kobernus has this weird like swing to me....

Incompetent could describe alot of these guys including Haren, Kobernus, Tracy. I just wouldnt call them bums.

Marrero just saved Zimm an error and made that athletic play I wished Laroche could make more often.

A is B
Joe is A
Therefore Joe is B

A bum is an incompetent person.
Haren is an incompetent person.
Therefore Haren is not a bum???

Now that was a unique way for Zim to avoid making an overhand throw!

It's the 5th inning.... Wonder what DJ does here.... Does Haren stay or does he get pulled....

In baseball bum is accepted language ever since the Brooklyn Dodgers.

More PC action I can tell.

A bum is a player playing significantly below tge median of his position.

By my definition Haren is a bum, but he is our bum.

Brooklyn once had a very lovable team once refered to as the "bums".

You owe me a drink on that one!

Obviously everyone thinks that calling Haren a bum is okay. I don't think saying someone stinks is as derogatory as calling someone a bum but that's me.

I met him many times when he was with the Angels. I find him to be a really good guy who can't get it done.

I said my thoughts last week, send him to the 'pen.

Cmon its LAnnan. need 4 runs this inning.

Lannan is getting some very generous outside calls that I didn't see Haren getting (although Haren hasn't really been as close).

Lol... Okay, we are still talking about the definition of 'bum' lol good lord....

Saying a baseball player is a bum is kind of old school and prestigious isn't it? I can just imagine a fan in an old baseball movie. -- Ahhh, ya bum! Get a hit for once would'ya?!

I think someone here said the all time gopher ball pitcher for one season was Bert Blyleven at 50. Bert ended up being an All star and won a WS of course. Haren is on pace to break this record, assuming he lasts the season. What would make this impressive is that back in Bert's time, starting pitchers went at least 8-9 innings no matter how bad they pitched. In Haren's era, pitchers average 6-7 innings and in his case he averages about 5 innings. I say let this no heart, over paid clown pitch on, at least Nats would have some type of all time record

now how is that for the glass half full, LOL

Lannan would likely outperform Haren, because Haren has been so bad. But I don't think Lannan would be exactly "good."

Out pitching Haren is no feat. And watch lannans numbers by the end they won't be impressing anyone

Nats 128 said...

Didnt Rizzo think to himself who would give the Nats the best chance in a division game.

Olendorf vs Haren

Seems Olendorf made more sense for a chance at a W. This is 3 bad starts in a row by Haren. Thats no longer inconsistency. This is just bad.

Candide said...

F.P. and Carp were talking about what could be done to improve the Nats' hitting. A suggestion comes from classical literature:

As they were chatting thus together they arrived at Portsmouth. The shore on each side the harbor was lined with a multitude of people, whose eyes were steadfastly fixed on a lusty man who was kneeling down on the deck of one of the men-of-war, with something tied before his eyes. Opposite to this personage stood four soldiers, each of whom shot three bullets into his skull, with all the composure imaginable; and when it was done, the whole company went away perfectly well satisfied.

"What the devil is all this for?" said Candide, "and what demon, or foe of mankind, lords it thus tyrannically over the world?"

He then asked who was that lusty man who had been sent out of the world with so much ceremony. When he received for answer, that it was an admiral.

"And pray why do you put your admiral to death?"

"Because he did not put a sufficient number of his fellow creatures to death. You must know, he had an engagement with a French admiral, and it has been proved against him that he was not near enough to his antagonist."

"But," replied Candide, "the French admiral must have been as far from him."

"There is no doubt of that; but in this country it is found requisite, now and then, to put an admiral to death, in order to encourage the others to fight."

So is this game tonight all about baseball karma? I hate it that we only scored two against a guy who is considered back of the rotation , on his first start back. But I cannot wish any ill against John Lannan. I just can't. That being said, I hope we get to their bullpen. We let Lannsn go and signed Haren at how much more money? I think he might owe us a little stab tonight. And our offense still sucks, except for those 7,8 hitters.

Section 222, I didnt see a file save for the drink counter. Hope it worked.

Jane Elizabeth said...

nats 128, I would gladly have egg on my face every time the Nats drive a runner in from 3rd. did you happen to see the game yesterday?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Clippard pitching balls over the middle to be lined into the outfield.

Nats 128 said...

Clip is lucky Brown and Howard topped those balls or those are way outta there for HRs.

Jane Elizabeth said...

What difference does it make, F.P. The Nationals can't score two runs in the 9th. The best we can hope for is losing in extra innings, realistically.

Seriously, Werth and La Roche seem ineffective. Desmond seemed to peak last year. Zimmerman isn't the player he was. Span is a bust. Morse is gone. Ramos can't stay healthy.

That leaves us with Bryce who never plays and Rendon and four really good pitchers who lose 4-3 and 3-2.

Unknown said...

ok, I don't have Clip's stats in front of me but it seems like lately, he is giving up 2-3 hits per inning and throwing 30+ pitches...am I wrong & then he somehow miraculously escapes...cue up K right there...weird.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Took 16 pitches to get firsy out.

Jane Elizabeth said...

This team needed 60 homers from La Roche and Zimmerman this year to stay on par. How likely is it that we get that many?

Joe Seamhead said...

Manassas, I don't think your post at 9:24 is that much of a stretch. Werth's was a tough play that maybe he shouldn't have dove for, but the ball Kobernus missed was catchable by a Span, or Bernadina. That play was deadly for Haren. Either ball gets caught, Haren would have only given up 2 runs for his outing. He still had too many balls hit hard against him and also benefited from a couple of great defensive plays.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Papelbon has not had many save opportunities so he better watch out.

Jane Elizabeth said...

How about that ball by Ryan Howard? Who could have caught that one or the 17 others that he dispenses like candy.

Nats 128 said...

Clippard lives on that ledge.

Jane Elizabeth said...

After yesterday, I couldn't muster any apprehension for Clippard's tightwire act. I honestly don't believe in this team's batters.

Section 222 said...

128, looks like it worked. You're on the board. Congrats!

Including tonight, Clipp has made 30 appearances already this year. Looks like he's given up a hit or a walk in 17 of them. Yet somehow, his ERA coming into tonight was 2.57. He's also thrown 17 or more pitches in 17 of his appearances. I wonder if he has the lowest ERA for average pitches per inning of any reliever. The number of jams he's created and escaped from must be really high.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

The ball to center started the whole provlem. Kobernus didnt catch a difficult hit, that most agree Span or Bernadina would have caught. Without that the inning is over before the hit to right.

Jane Elizabeth said...

How many pitches this inning?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Hoping Zuke and Lombo give an encore performance... Ya know 2 doubles...

Jane Elizabeth said...

Why would the fans stay. They've seen us hit.

Section 222 said...

Sorry FP, Suzuki is not really who I'd like to have leading off the inning...

Jane Elizabeth said...

Lombo with 2 hits and still only a .240 obp.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Quit hitting the ball at Revere.

Unknown said...

Bob said "...and it will be up to Chad Tracy"...good night all.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Jayson Werth promised 120 victories. Don't take him to the racetrack with you.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Well... Gosh, what a disaster by Haren today.... Lets win the next 2 and win the series....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

As I predicted as long as Haren only gives up 2 runs we win.

Pitchers need to realize we arent hitting so they cant let other tea hit either.

Not a good formula, but it is what it is.

Section 222 said...

Tracy missing hittable fastballs. Kind of the story of his season, isn't it?

David Proctor said...

HOLY CRAP. CHAD TRACY IS BACK.

Chad Tracy, seriously?!? Goon Squad is back

Jane Elizabeth said...

We should be jumping up and down, but yesterday's game was so crushing that my son and I just still here placid, prepared for the inevitable. Prove me wrong, Nats, please.

Section 222 said...

That's what they get for having that silly bandbox of a ballpark!

Steamer said...

How about that Chad Tracy

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Now a shutdown inning.

Joe Seamhead said...

Too bad, LOL, but no "W" for Lannan.

Nats 128 said...

Mark had to revoke his Instant Analysis! Get to work on a new ending Mark!

Secret wasian man said...

Powers out what happened

Section 222 said...

William O, let's hope you aren't prophetic with your "best we can do is lose in extras" statement.

David Proctor said...

Let's just hope the new ending doesn't say walk-off. Come on Drew/Abad

Jane Elizabeth said...

Let's face it. I have been watching baseball for a long time but I have seldom, if ever, seen such a pathetic display of baseball as I saw by the Nationals yesterday. It looked like the players had no interest in the game.

David Proctor said...

SWM, Chad Tracy hit a home run to tie the game off Papelbon.

Unknown said...

give Chad some credit, i didn't...two key hits...heck, this means Davey will have him hitting 4th and playing short-stop by the end of the week! haha.

jeffwx said...

our bench and backups suck

Evan Gattis...6 for 8 with 11 rbis pinch hitting
Nats pinch hitters have 2 rbis all year (all by tracey)
no jordan schaffer, no Gattis, minor league callups except rendon are marginal hitters

team not put together well expecting to not have injuries and having bernadina, tymo, lombo, kobernus, solano, kobernus, brown... as your guys for the inevitable ph or injury or replacement.

but all is well..the mighty tracey has done it again.

Whynat said...

Maybe Davy knew what he was doing when he gave chad that start the other day?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Sweet Fancy Moses!!!!! Lol... Bwahahahahahah.... Really Mark!?!?!?!?

We are winning this game in the 10th....

Secret wasian man said...

Yeah was hoping it was a 2 run dinger. Lets go boys

Unknown said...

Wow!! Tracy crushes a ball and it gets caught by Ryan Howard for an out. Then he hits a glorified pop up for a game tying homer on 0-2 with 2 outs in the 9th. What a strange sport!

Jane Elizabeth said...

How can we get another run though? Hopefully Davey and Eck are putting their heads together as we type, plotting....

Section 222 said...

According to the Glossary, that was Mark's first Sweet Fancy Moses since Moore's and Bernadina's back to back homers on 5/28. This was almost as unbelievable.

Nats 128 said...

Need a doubleplay.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Damn revere on again, watch him steal. Hope I am wrong.

Secret wasian man said...

Be a big lift to,win this thing. C'mon guys

A DC Wonk said...

Ya know . . . a lot of folks were wondering why Tracy started on Friday. Davey said "to get some at bats". Most here scoffed.

But, you know, getting some at bats helps keep you from getting too rusty.

Wow -- 0-2 with two out. Gotta love that!

JaneB said...

I'm grateful to Chad tonight whatever happens.
