Game 67: Nats at Indians

Chase here posting the game threads for the weekend as the Nats continue their series with the Cleveland Indians. After mustering just two hits against Justin Masterson last night, Washington will take a shot at the resurgent Scott Kazmir (3-4, 5.33 ERA). Though his numbers overall aren't spectacular, the lefty has been very good at home with a 3-0 record and 3.68 ERA at Progressive Field. This will be his first time facing the Nationals.

Working in Washington's favor is the presence of Jordan Zimmermann (9-3, 2.00) on the mound. They saw a terrific outing by Gio Gonzalez last night and should expect their starter to give them a good chance to win once again this evening. Zimmermann will be seeking his 10th win in the team's 67th game of the year. He has never faced the Indians before.

Davey Johnson has bumped Anthony Rendon up to hit second for the first time this season, likely in hopes his patience at the plate can pay dividends at the top of the lineup. Through 15 games this year Rendon already has more walks than Danny Espinosa and is only two behind Jayson Werth in 22 less games. Chris Marrero is also in the seven hole as the designated hitter.

Enjoy the game...

K-rol for sure! This guy is unreal.

David Proctor said...

NatsLady, the A's soured on him because he used a certain homophobic slur that begins with f and ends with g on his twitter account. They actually suspended him for it.

Nats 128 said...

K-rols line is 3 K's facing 5 batters.

And he works fast too. None of this "deliberate" stuff, just get ball, throw ball.

Good on you Ian Krol. Verducci was sure impressed.

So, has anyone checked the temperature in Hades recently?

DP, right, now that you mention it. Hopefully Rizzo had a heart-to-heart with him, because that stuff won't fly in DC either.

Weird to hear Storen referred to as a veteran. I suppose he officially is, but it's still weird.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

NatsLady, the end of last year the A's decided to try Krol as a reliever as he just wasn't making it as a starter. He was losing control and velo as the games went on.

Krol was even worse as a reliever with the A's but it was a small sample size of 8 games. He sort of was a throw in on the deal. Some say it was the slur he used which was bad for public relations. Who knows. 5.06 ERA didn't help. In Harrisburg they had him work on fastball command and he's like a new player.

There you go, AJ Cole + 2 throw-ins.

How do you mean? Rendon has power, but he's not going to hit 30. He's more of a doubles hitter, but he can definitely put one of the park. I'd say he's a 15 homer guy or so, but someone who has followed him more can correct me.

Tcostant said...

What a great win!!! Happy Fathers Day to all.

NatsLady said...

Now, Storen, he's either lights out or you lose the game big-time.

Gonat said...

Tracy had a legit HR. Centerfield off a high fastball. That was pro!

He saved his job for sure. The 25th man does it and the 2 young guys in Rendon and K-Rol have really helped this team with Rendon getting the Game Winning hit!

sjm308 said...

Just got on!! - we had this all the way right??

Hate to read Mick anymore but he is two away from this so I had to see that he is whinning again about people picking on him - poor Mick - guess that is what you get when you predict 8 losses in a row - I would hate to read what you posted during the game and gladly will not have to.

OK - win tomorrow and we win the series. We lost the first game of the last two series and game back to win them. That is what baseball is all about. Just win each series.

Go Nats!! suck it up Mick and take the criticism

NatsLady said...

DP, we were talking about Tracy, not Rendon.

Joe Seamhead said...

Zimmerman had 2-4 night with a HR. Desi had a HR. Jayson Werth had a HR, Chad Tracy had a HR. Rendon hit a HR. They beat our ace, but we won the game. Our boys hung tough. How about Davey bring in Storen after Krol had just knocked down five in a row? A couple of guys are cold right now, but others are picking up some slack. Strasburg back tomorrow. I feel pretty positive, except the Giants let us down.

mick said...

so back to J zim...what the heck happen...it looked like every pitch was a high fastball tonight?

NatsLady, did you watch the Giants game. Game should have ended on the doubleplay which turned into a single as the 3rd baseman didnt field it. Tough for Romo when he wasnt getting the help behind him and he got squeezed by the ump.

I hear that! Nobody can blame themselves for hating on the Tracy. He has sucked and he would probably agree with anyone who felt that way. For that moment in time I thought to me myself he could hit it out. For the first time in a long time nobody was bashing the guy. Not a coincidence.

Section 222 said...

Soriano has had plenty of clean, no heart attack saves. In 8 of 18 he allowed no hits at all. But tonight, he definitely did a Houdini. Bourn's last out was ripped.

Anonymous said...

Judas there's a stunning lack of knowledge of the game in here. Go back and check out the many games Verlander, Sabbathia and others have blown. Jon Lester a day or two ago. One issue, however, has been correctly noted: When you are trying to climb up the ladder, you put your best nine (or ten) guys on the field, assuming they are healthy. I do not understand how Marrero fits into that mold. Cleveland is a decent team; you don't assume anything, even with your ace pitching.

BigCat said...

Mick - If you are going to predict 8 losses in a row, be prepared to take some criticism. Email Mark all you want, I never called you a name or called you out, I just get tired of the constant negativity when we lose and then gung ho when we win. I call that being hippo critical but I will not go as far as what Natsjack suggested. You just get too involved. We are going to lose a few more this season, but hopefully win more then we lose but you already have us out of the playoffs. I am not there yet and still see some hope for this group.

Go Nats!!

Mrs. B, I don't know if you are familiar with MLB.com's "condensed games." You can see basically every play in the game in 10-20 minutes, depending on how much hitting there was. It should be online sometime later tonight or early tomorrow morning. Here's the link.

mick said...

and to add... you are at least a gentlemen..

Jane Elizabeth said...

Told my son that both that Indians' reliever and Nick Swisher got Terry Francona's boot in their ass when they came in from the field.

I can hear those guys at the mound: Tracy is hitting .100 with an OPS+ of 2. Just throw strikes! Tracy raises his OPS+ to 5!

That homer reminded me of Bernie Carbo's in the 8th of game 6 of the 1975 series, with the same incredibly weak at bat followed by a long homer to center.

Boy, this was a great game to win. On a night when our starter didn't really have it, the hitters came through and we were able to pull the game out. I remember the Atlanta game where Stras left with an injury, but I'm not sure I remember another game this year that we've won without a decent starting pitcher performance.

NatsLady said...

128, yes, I watched the Giants game, and I agree on the fielding and the umps. Still, Romo was not at his killer best. Still can't register that BJ had two homeruns. Oh, well. The Giants on the road are a frail reed.

pwilly said...

It's about time the offense wins a game. The Cardinals gave up 7 runs tonight...and won by 6. Sometimes the pitching needs a break.

Btw, did you see Werth rubbing his hand and wrist his last at bat? Hope it's nothing.

sorry for ruffling your feathers, mick. You were hard on the blind, blind fans, of which I guess I am one. And it was an odd time to mention being sick of R. Sorry, man, it brought out a thoughtless response from me.

Zimm was actually 1-4 with the homer and 2 K's looking in 3-2 counts. Even Verducci said he has to foul off those pitches.

Joe Seamhead said...

I stand corrected, 128, he was 1-4 with a walk. I agree with he should foul off some of them. Still, I don't see him in a slump on a night when he hit a dinger and scored twice.

Meanwhile, down on the farm, guess who got the win against Syracuse today. It was none other than ex-Nat Shawn Hill, apparently transported to Toledo via the way back machine.

He's trying to hang on, but struggling. After today's gem he's 1-8.

Nice!!! Love to see Storen's slider and nerve in a tough spot. But still- one out and you get a win?

Joe Seamhead said...

We were losing until Chad Tracy tied it with a homer, as I said wow, flying pigs

Joe Seamhead said...

Storen came in after Tracy's HR to a tie game and got the last out in the bottom of the eighth. Rendon hit a dinger off the Indian's closer in the top of the ninth to put us up by one. Soriano pitched the bottom of the 9th, making Storen the pitcher of record. On Rendon's AB,the Tribe let a foul ball drop slightly down the first base line, giving Anthony another shot, which he took advantage of.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Yep. One batter gets ya de win. Dem's de rules of baseball scoring....

baseballswami said...

So wait-- Jordan was not good and Tracy hit a homerun?????? What is this-- some kind of alternate baseball universe??

Jane Elizabeth said...

Jordan was not good against the O's and Tracy did not hit a homer that game, so that should have served as a transitional phase (faze?) for us all.

Where did this notion come from that top pitchers never have bad games? It happens all the time to Verlander (in the All Star game even), to Sabathia, to Walter Johnson, even to teams with a six run lead at home and the NL's leading winner in 2012. Hardly unusual, really, just sort of unlikely.....

Man, the FOX broadcast was awful. Seemed like half of it was scripted. Rendon's double happened in the middle of a story about Jason Giambi and they barely mentioned it. They finally talked about him after his homer in the 9th, like they had to turn to his page in they're notes.

Joe Seamhead said...

Seriously, the Nats spotted JZ a 5-0 lead and he blew it. No bad plays behind him either.he left losing 6-5. Tracy pretty much muscled a two strike, high fastball out.

That was a terrible pitch to Tracy, goddess bless him, and the Charlottean smacked it out of the park to deep center. Both his ball and Rendon's barely cleared the wall.

Yes, the Fox announcers were awful. How can an excellent writer like Verducci be so bad on the air? He wouldn't be quiet and he and Albert kept talking about things that only had marginal relevance to the matters at hand. Less is more....

Joe Seamhead said...

Chris Marrero got the start at DH and had a tough game: 3 K's against three different pitchers.I know many here want him to get a start at 1B, but I hope it's not tomorrow with SS on the mound.

Tracy's HR might have just scraped the wall, but he didn't get cheated. He hit it to the deepest part of the field.

A couple of notes from the last two games:

1. Jayson was getting called out on "strikes" below his knees, especially on Friday. Don't the umpires notice that he's a bit taller than some of the other players?

2. Rendon's smile as he rounded the bases could light up a room.

3. Gio was cussing himself out as he came back in the dugout after the sixth inning Friday night.

4. The food at Progressive Field is not very good compared to DC. The beer, however, is not bad at all.

5. Thanks to the Sec. 311 folks who stopped by to say "hi" when they heard us chanting N-A-T-S NATS! Whoo!after the first five runs.

6. Amazing how quiet that stadium was after Rendon's homer, considering how noisy it was the rest of the night.

Sorry we can't stay for today's game. GYFNG!

Rendon was moved up in the lineup to where I thought he should be. Actually, he should be in the fourth or fifth position. Had he been in the game the night before, the Nationals would have won. We were lucky last night it was he who had the second chance to hit the homer. Anyone else would have had a clutch strike-out. Way to go big Tony!!

What an unbelievable win last night! A win today would mark the 3rd straight series win & the 2nd straight road series win.

Ghost Of Steve M. said... Krol ... sort of was a throw in on the deal. Some say it was the slur he used which was bad for public relations.

I'm thinking it was more than just the slur - you have to factor in where he was playing at the time - Oakland is just across the bay from San Francisco. It's like playing in New York and going antisemitic.

Or be managing the Marlins and speaking admiringly about Fidel Castro...

Betcha a bag of peanuts he's been sent to Crash Davis Cliches 101 class. Keep saying, "Gotta play 'em one game at a time," and the worst thing anyone will ever say about you is that you're a boring interview - until you blow a save.

"Joe Seamhead said...
I stand corrected, 128, he was 1-4 with a walk. I agree with he should foul off some of them. Still, I don't see him in a slump on a night when he hit a dinger and scored twice."

Def not in a slump. The person who was bashing him hard was living on each pitch.

Interestly, the problems seemed to start after the Nats came up with no RBIs with bases loaded. 1 run scored on a doubleplay. That was deflating.

Situational hitting needs to improve.

I'm off to Fathers Day brunch. Happy Fathers Day to all the dads and our main man Mark!

Great to get your report ArlVAFan. That must have been great fun last night. Did the Indians fans catch you when you keeled over from shock when Tracy hit one out?

I didn't mind the Fox broadcast that much, but I was sorry not to be able to hear Davey's postgame. Is there video or audio of that anywhere?

Someone up thread said they hope Stras goes six tonight. I hope he goes four or five and is healthy afterward. I think our bullpen can handle a little more work if needed. Clip and Abad are rested. Is Cedeno still out in the BP or did he go down for Stras?

Gonat said...

I guess Ohlendorf is the long man today. If its Haren, I wouldn't be shocked. Go Stras!

Joe Seamhead said...

Heck, Deuces, while were throwing out hopes for Strasburg, I hope he throws a complete game no-no, and is healthy afterwards!
Good grief did the Braves back in to a win yesterday. They, like us, benefited from an error in the 9th. A guy on first, one out, and a made to order game ending, double play ball goes under the Giant's SS glove. Arrrggh!

I also thought ArlVA Fan's post was a fun read. It sounded like that stadium just completely deflated when Rendon knocked his homer out.

Chad Tracy had 2 strikes low in the zone called on him before he muscled the high fastball out. It must of felt akin to the governor calling with a reprieve at the 11th hour. Man, talk about hanging on by a thread.

So, is it decided who goes down today when Strasburg gets activated?

Section 222 said...

Totally forgot about Ohlendorf! Thanks Gonat. I wouldn't be surprised if Davey babies Stras and has Ohlendorf ready to go for the fifth or sixth. He better have good movement on his pitches. After Stras, his fastball is going to seem like BP.

Rendon, like Harper before him, is a joy to watch. His hitting and fielding is not only very sweet but it looks like he's having fun and enjoying the game. As we all know, there's not been a lot of joy-to-watch this year. Morse and Harper filled that bill last year, along with the starting pitching. I'm looking forward to seeing Rendon and Harper in the lineup at the same time (hurry Harp!), along with out-of-his-funk Span who's reaching his career average OBP (.354, now .311); a healthy and comfortable Werth playing every day; Ramos back (take you time, Wilson); and all five starters healthy and grinding.

Joe Seamhead said...

Agreed on every point, Muddy.

Something that I don't think has been mentioned about last night's game, and that is Adam LaRoche made a hell of a catch on the scorcher off of Bourn's bat. Fox didn't show any good replay of it, but if you look at this clip it looks like Adam was in a pretty contorted position as he made the play. I had to watch it a couple of times and stop it to see the catch. Did anybody else see any other shot of the play?

NJ, I'm totally with you on Fox "coverage." I was in Roanoke a few weeks ago, and instead of the Nats, the Fox game was Yankee-Red Sox, perhaps because the Sox farm team is nearby in Salem, VA. But still...

What a great game. Phenomenal performance by the bullpen.

As I said before there's a few ways that you can bypass fox stupid blackouts . They stick it to you, you can stick it to them.
Never understood the concept that a fan will say: i'm a Nats fan and watch all of their games and read about them every day but oh look fox is showing the Yankees and Red Sox i'm gonna care about these 2 teams and disregard the one I follow every day.

Section 222 said...

exposremains, huh? Who said anything about caring about the Yankees and/or Red Sox?
