NLDS Game 2: Nats at Cardinals

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
Jordan Zimmermann faces Jaime Garcia in Game 2 today at Busch Stadium.
ST. LOUIS -- How important was it for the Nationals to win Game 1 of this best-of-five series, especially on the road? "That game's huge," Adam LaRoche said this morning. "Game 1 in a short series like this is huge. I think more than anything because now for the Cardinals, since we won Game 1, this is kind of a must-win. You don't want to get down two games in any series, but definitely not in a five-game."

So the pressure today at Busch Stadium is squarely on the defending World Series champs, not the first-time playoff participants. Which means the pressure is on Game 2 starter Jamie Garcia to get his team back on track. The left-hander had an up-and-down season but he finished strong, going 4-1 with a 2.50 ERA over his last six starts (after the Nats got him for six runs in late-August).

Jordan Zimmermann makes his first career postseason start, and if you think the right-hander is fazed at all by the situation, you don't know him very well. "I really never get nervous for any games," he said yesterday. "The only game I really got nervous for was my debut [in 2009]. And I don't see anything changing this time."

We've got another afternoon start here in St. Louis, so look for the Shadow Monster to be a factor again. And for everyone who keeps asking: No, MLB has not yet announced a start time for Game 3 on Wednesday. As soon as they do, I will pass it along. I promise.

In the meantime, plenty of updates from today's game to come right here...

4:38 p.m. -- And we're underway on a 61-degree afternoon in St. Louis. Shadows covering the plate and almost reaching the mound, but not quite there yet.

4:50 p.m. -- The Nationals got two men on base in the top of the first, with Jayson Werth drawing a leadoff walk and Adam LaRoche getting the benefit of the doubt on a 3-2 check swing to draw a two-out walk. That set the stage for Michael Morse ... who grounded out to second. So the Nats are 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position today. We go to the bottom of the first.

4:57 p.m. -- Jordan Zimmermann couldn't have drawn his first inning up much better than that. He retired the side on 13 pitches, 10 strikes, striking out Jon Jay looking at a 95 mph fastball off the outside corner and then got a couple weak grounders to second base to end the inning. A superb start to Zimmermann's afternoon. Scoreless after one.

5:17 p.m. -- And the Nats get on the board first, thanks to a clutch hit from one of their real offensive forces ... Jordan Zimmermann. Yep, the right-hander has always handled the bat well, and it did it quite well in the top of the second, blooping a base hit to right with two on and one out and scoring Ian Desmond (who ran right through Bo Porter's stop sign) to give the Nats a 1-0 lead. So, to recap: The three Nationals who have driven in runs so far in this series are Kurt Suzuki, Tyler Moore and Jordan Zimmermann. Who'd have thunk it? 1-0 as we go to the bottom of the second.

5:38 p.m. -- That did not go well for Zimmermann. He allowed five hits in the bottom of the second, including four straight to open the inning. Four Cardinals wound up scoring thanks to RBI from David Freese, Daniel Descalso, Skip Schumaker and Jon Jay. The only bright spot for the Nationals: Mike Matheny decided to go for the knockout punch early and sent up Schumaker to pinch-hit for Garcia. So now the Cardinals will need to get 21 outs from their bullpen, with Lance Lynn the first man up. We go to the third, and the Nats now trail 4-1.

5:59 p.m. -- And Zimmermann's struggles against the Cardinals continue as Allen Craig destroys an inside fastball down the left-field line for a solo homer in the third. An infield single by Yadier Molina -- the seventh allowed by Zimmermann to the last 11 batters he faced -- finally prompted Davey Johnson to get his bullpen up and moving around. Zimmermann finally got out of the inning thanks to a fantastic diving play by Ryan Zimmerman at third. But the Nats now trail 5-1 after three. Craig Stammen is still warming as the top of the fourth begins, and the pitcher's spot is due up third. Looks like that will be it for Jordan.

6:08 p.m. -- That is indeed it for Zimmermann, who is pulled after allowing five runs in three innings. That matches the shortest of his 82 career starts, and the two previous ones both came in Sept. 2010, his first month back from Tommy John surgery. The Nats, meanwhile, have done nothing against Lance Lynn. So we move to the bottom of the fourth, the deficit still 5-1 as Stammen enters from the bullpen.

6:27 p.m. -- This one spiraled out of control in a hurry, didn't it? Stammen was greeted immediately in the bottom of the fourth by Daniel Descalso, who launched a homer into the petunia bed beyond the fence in right-center. The right-hander never could right himself and was pulled after recording only one out and allowing two runs to score (aided by Espinosa's error and Pete Kozma's hustle). In came Christian Garcia, who got out of the mess, but not before the Cardinals opened up a 7-1 lead as we go to the fifth.

6:37 p.m. -- Well, hold the phone. The Nats haven't quite given up yet. Ryan Zimmerman orders his first round of postseason cortisone shots and deposits a ball into the left-field bullpen. Adam LaRoche immediately follows with a shot into the petunia bed in right field. Just like that, the deficit has been trimmed to 7-3 as the Nats show some signs of life in the fifth.

6:53 p.m. -- It's been a battle all afternoon/evening, but Garcia managed to get through the bottom of the fifth without allowing a run to score. It's still 7-3 as we enter the sixth inning of a game that began 2 hours and 15 minutes ago.

6:57 p.m. -- The Nats are starting to hit the ball hard. Unfortunately, they're hitting them just close enough to Cardinals fielders to make the play. Espinosa launched a ball deep to left-center to open the sixth but was stone-cold robbed by Jay, who slammed into the wall to make a fantastic catch and rob Espinosa of extra bases. Steve Lombardozzi (pinch-hitting for Garcia) also smoked a line drive, but right at Kozma at shortstop. So the deficit remains 7-3 as we move to the bottom of the sixth, Michael Gonzalez now on the mound.

7:06 p.m. -- Carlos Beltran launches one off the facing of the third deck down the left-field line. That makes it 8-3 as the Nationals' deficit grows larger and the number of outs they have left to work with diminishes. Seventh inning upcoming.

7:15 p.m. -- Strange doings in the top of the seventh. The Nats got themselves in business thanks to Werth's leadoff single and Harper's hustle double (his first postseason hit in nine at-bats). Zimmerman then smoked a liner to left, but right at Holliday. Werth tagged and scored, but when Holliday shanked his throw, Harper tried to advance to third. Bad idea. He was thrown out at third base, a real no-no when trailing by four runs. So it's now 8-4, but the Nats are down to their last six outs.

7:36 p.m. -- Here we go again: Mitchell Boggs on the mound with 2 on in the eighth. Chad Tracy sent up to pinch-hit. This time, Mike Matheny stuck with that matchup and didn't bring in the lefty. And it paid off, because Tracy popped up on the first pitch. The Nats are down to their last three outs, still down 8-4.

7:55 p.m. -- Make it 12-4 as the Cardinals keep their foot on the gas pedal in the bottom of the eighth against Sean Burnett. Three extra-base hits off the lefty, including another bomb by Beltran, this one into Albert Pujols territory beyond the left-field bullpen. Is it over yet?

8:05 p.m. -- It is now. Final score: Cards 12, Nats 4. Series tied at one game apiece. Game 3 Wednesday afternoon at Nationals Park, the first postseason game played in D.C. in 79 years.

I hope JZ gets chance to redeem himself in the next series, I bet he does, I just hope he gets the chance too.

There is almost no momentum factor in baseball, but hey, if that makes you feel better, we still might win even without momentum.

mick said...

If Nats can make the Cards sweat, even if they lose something like 7-5 or 8-6, that would be very positive

peric said...

Davey needs to own up on Espi, if he is hurt, play Lombo. This bunting with Espi is ridiculous. He really should go with Lombo back in DC.

Ah, why is it that you do not see the grasshopper at your feet?

Davey and Rizzo are both looking at this the same way. Its a learning experience for the 2nd youngest roster ... one of the most talented but lacking a great deal of experience.

Two words grasshopper: learning experience.

These Nats will be back ... and back ... and then back again. Kind of like the Everready bunny they'll keep on going.

Many in baseball are in awe at what this team could become. And yes, they are going to be a whole heck of a lot better than the Spankees very, very soon.

A very loose game all around on defense. People will say it has to do with the play-offs, but not all games are gems. I wish I had more confidence in some of the pitchers right now but maybe most staffs are running on fumes.... Orioles' closer got hammered last night.

peric said...

I believe Davey may have to consider using those three lefties he has squirreled away in the bullpen.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Momentum there just score 5 more next inning.

Nut Garcia just did the thing that I hate most a lead off walk.

mick said...

Peric...
I know Espi can be a great player... I am talking in terms of THIS series and trying to give the team the best shot of winning, Espi is slumping and why not go with a more consistent and proven bat in Lombo?

Jane Elizabeth said...

That is fine, but unfortunately, according to the Wash Post and SI, the best team in baseball rarely wins in the post-season.

peric said...

Boy one thing, probably a combination of umps, playoffs, and nibbling but they have got to do something about all the walks!

Its something McCatty preached over-and-over again this season ... and the Nats preached system-wide. NO walks. They have always killed Nats pitching in the past.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Zim's was a solo because Harper K instead of getting a hit.

Garcia plans on giving runs back I am afraid

I agree and this why I will be very happy if Nats can get to NLCS and go deep before losing to Reds. Losing to Cards would be a disappointing. Reds are the best team and it will probably be a Reds-Yankees WS

I'm with NJ. Let's stick with this game a little longer. A few more good innings from our bullpen and some timely hits, and we've got ourselves a ball game. mick is also right that making them sweat a bit would be a good thing, even if we don't come all the way back.

Job 1 is Garcia figuring his release point out.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Nice DP

mick said...

Nat Jack may be on to something.... 12 more outs assuming we keep it a 4 run game could make this interesting...

peric said...

THIS series and trying to give the team the best shot of winning, Espi is slumping and why not go with a more consistent and proven bat in Lombo?

And what kind of experience would you very, very young and athletic starter take from that? Its a learning experience. Its not like Espy is an early to mid 30's journeyman 2nd bagger like Adam Kennedy or Cristian Guzman. This is a different deal entirely. He has to learn to get through this.

sm13 said...

Get down on Espi if you want, but he turns a heck of a double play.

Nice poise shown by Garcia to get out of the jam.

PDowdy83 said...

Might not have been pretty but Garcia has stopped the bleeding it seems. Time for Danny to do something positive with the bat leading off the inning.

rogieshan said...

Peric, the wisdom of grasshopper is about living for today.

When you're in the playoffs you're there to win. You're gonna learn whether you lose or not.

mick said...

Also, as Mark said on 980 today, this is a MUST game for Cards... If reds were 1-1 with Giants or if the Giants were at least competitive, I think we would all feel a little better, I know I would. I admit, i am looking ahead and i was hoping we could win in 3 or 4 games and Reds-Giants would go 5 games.

peric said...

And you can help. Cheer louder for Danny Espinosa than ever before and ever more than anyone else ... see how that works out ...

sm13 said...

Ah, but the wisdom of Rizzo is to look at the long term....

PDowdy83 said...

Damn it man...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Espi finally hits one. Now time for dingers

sm13 said...

Wow, Jay makes Werth's catch yesterday look routine.

peric said...

When you're in the playoffs you're there to win. You're gonna learn whether you lose or not.

Its still a best-of-five series ... patience grasshopper.

The wrong experience, win or lose, can affect a prospect.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

What a wasted inning. We nred runs

mick said...

Keep it at 4 runes going into the top of 7th, we have top of the order up... that could be an interesting inning... one in which Bryce finally gets his first hit

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Kelly was very hittable but we couldnt take advantage.

score 5 next iinning. Moheca pitchrs next

rogieshan said...

Sorry, Dick Stockton. It was a spectacular catch, but not "the play of the series so far." Not when the Cards are leading by four runs. Werth's catch yesterday in the sun was more clutch. Mattheus inducing two consecutive groundballs and the Nats turning a key DP were bigger plays. Quit with the love fest for everything St. Louis. And, by the way, Yadier Molina is good, but he's not God of Thunder like you guys are making him out to be.

rogieshan agreed with you, wish Bobby C and FP were calling the games

mick said...

dammit Gonzo!!!!

peric said...

Well Nats lefty relievers probably aren't going to work against the Cardinals.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Morse's non catch allows 8th run to score.

well get 5 in the 7th.

mick said...

If Stammen and Gonzo did not give up two very bad pitches we are talking about a 6-3 game

Joe Seamhead said...

I don't get what Morse was watching that first foul ball for. THAT was catchable, then Beltran comes back and crushes one.

peric said...

Peric makes me want to root for the cardinals...what an idiot

Damned wood maggot why don't you get a real handle or are you too stupid to understand how to do that moron?

mick said...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...
Morse's non catch allows 8th run to score.

that is true, but I expect better from Gonzales as a veteran pitcher with post season experience.. All Stammen and Gonzo had to do was keep it at 6 runs

peric said...

I don't get what Morse was watching that first foul ball for. THAT was catchable, then Beltran comes back and crushes one.

The shadows are going to be as bad for Morse as for Werth ... and Werth is the better fielder hands down.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Gonzo got the pop up Morse is the one that let you down.

5 runs this inning. Show you want it as much as they do.

mick said...

Nats Jack, even 2 runs would be fine, make it 8-5, get 1-2 runs in 8th which makes it a pressure situation for Cards in 9th

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

First of 8 hits yhis inning

peric said...

That's a start ... and the right kind ... now for Harper.

PDowdy83 said...

Here we go

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Second of 8 hits

peric said...

Okay the surge is started ... Werth and Harper ... now for the Z-man.

mick said...

Now gang, win or lose, we needed Bryce to get that first hit.... that was excellent

JaneB said...

THERE'S that run-till-they-tag-ya offense!

ehay2k said...

I think everyone agrees that Morse in LF is a defensive liability. A faster player gets to the ball. If this were a 1 run game, would he have tried harder? While he very well may have done so, in the games I've seen, he has really gone all-out for a ball. That has always been my question about him - does he get it?

NICE! - thanks Werth and Harper for making this interesting again!

peric said...

Oh c'mon dudes Florida and Miami are the same team ... sheesh. Uh oh Harper blew it with his base running ... learning experience.

JaneB said...

At least we got one there.

mick said...

Very Selfish play by Bryce, I hope Davey lets him know, very very selfish

JaneB said...

We can still win!

PDowdy83 said...

Ouch...that unraveled quickly.

Sadly Holiday gets an assist on whatever the heck that was.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

If harper had left immidiately he would be safe. what a dumb play. of course zim easted his homer with 0 on with 2 on a liner to left. Timing is everything.

get 5 next inning

rogieshan said...

There you go, Peric. THAT was a learning experience.

ehay2k said...

wait - it didn't mean interesting in THAT way!

dang rookies! ;-)

Although if he had made it, and it was pretty close, the Cards would have been worried. I for one am very glad to see that our boys have not stopped competing.

sm13 said...

Brenley giving Bryce grief for getting tagged out at third. How could he not run on the spiked throw by Holiday? Its just Bryce being Bryce.

mick said...

frustrating game, Beltram catches foul ball, Morse does not, Bryce's play really has irked me and I hope he gets chewed out for it, what part of 3 losses and your season is over does he not get???

peric said...

Very Selfish play by Bryce,

Agressive mistake. Not sure he'll get chided that much for that ... they'll ask him if he still thinks he can make it next time that happens and go from there ...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Had Harper right awsy esily safe but waitef way to late.

JaneB said...

Bryce mad the kind of play we've been thrilled by all season, just .025 seconds slower than we wish.

peric said...

the Cards would have been worried.

Believe me even with this ending as a win the Cards ARE worried.

They yanked their starter after 2 and Jaime Garcia is one of the very best young left-handed starters in all of baseball.

mick said...

no peric... there is a difference in being aggressive and being smart and that was not the situation to be aggressive. Bryce has the speed from 2b to score on a hit, we did not need him trying to go to 3rd in that situation

peric said...

no peric... there is a difference in being aggressive and being smart and that was not the situation to be aggressive.

We'll have to see what Davey says in the post-gamer. He usually won't mince words if he agrees with you.

mick said...

at least we are making the Cards sweat and that is a very good thing. If Nats had not scored again after it was 7-1, I would have been worried, now I really do not think one can say Cards have momentum

rogieshan said...

ehay2k, "I for one am very glad to see that our boys have not stopped competing."

Second that sentiment. They could have easily folded the tent early.

ehay2k said...

Zimm's throws, they just look so uncomfortable. I feel uncomfortable watching them. Am I wrong in my recollection that he had been throwing a lot from his normal sidearm slot all year, but very recently he went back almost exclusively to the over-the-top throw he worked on after his surgery two (was it two?) years ago?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Now score at least 4 no goofing this time

mick said...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...
Now score at least 4 no goofing this time

I could see Nats getting this thing to 8-6 or 8-7 and that would be a good spring board for Wed. Even if the score stays at 8-4, Cards had to sweat it out

PDowdy83 said...

Keep on fighting guys. Only a grand slam away.

peric said...

Where's Natslady she would be having a field day with Morse's base running ... there ya go Mick an almost passive base running error versus Harper aggressiveness. Maybe its me but I'll take Harper's mistakes.

ehay2k said...

The Cards really seem to be pressing - Jay and Beltran in a near-BNB situation in the outfield, Beltran's terrible throw to try to get Morse at second.

ehay2k said...

peric, I don't think Morse could have tagged up and made it to third before Beltran gunned him down.

mick said...

Nats are lucky they had T Moore pinch hit yesterday ... over the past month Tracy swings at the first pitch and pops up, which is what I am sure would have happen yesterday.... he is veteran player and that was not a good at bat

peric said...

The Cards really seem to be pressing - Jay and Beltran in a near-BNB situation in the outfield, Beltran's terrible throw to try to get Morse at second.

I hate to break it to you ... and especially the gloom and doom contingent, but the Nats are actually A REALLY GOOD team. And they are going to get even better right as we watch during these playoffs. Off we go into the wild blue ceiling up we go into the sky.

Of course the Cardinals are afraid. They should be.

mick said...

very frustrating inning now its on to DC and its up to Ejac... we can not get down 2-1 in this series

peric said...

peric, I don't think Morse could have tagged up and made it to third before Beltran gunned him down.

I think if Beltran had thrown to 2nd instead of 3rd he would have had Morse. He confused him with Dessie, Espy, Werth and Harper ... lol

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

4 In the 9th not easy but since we have left runners all over the place we must score it at the end.

Morse kept ball in front and still let guy go the second. When their left fielder screws up we het thrown out at third

ehay2k said...

Nats bats: 8 men LOB, 1 for 7 RISP.

Dang HRs at the wrong time.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

We have had 9 batters in the 9 holr. Only one with a hit Zimmermann.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Our pitchers in general was awful today.

Now 5 runs needed. Yanks scored 5 in the 9th last night. Lets do the same

JaneB said...

Either the pitch track is off or the umpire is blind.

sm13 said...

Sean is still not the same. I wonder if his elbow will be "hurting" and we'll replace him with Zach Duke.

rogieshan said...

If they come back and tie it in the 9th, I will run naked down Pennsylvania.

mick said...

Sean was it asking much to keep this a 4 run game???

peric said...

Sean is still not the same. I wonder if his elbow will be "hurting" and we'll replace him with Zach Duke.

He hasn't been right for a while ... and more like he was last season of late. I suspect, as you surmise, that we'll find out he has some arm issue this offseason.

mick said...

I think Burnett's shut down for 2012 should be now, hopefully he can bounce back in the Spring

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Burnett and Morse might have quit nut not meNeed 8 in the 9th

ehay2k said...

Wow - we started playing ugly all of a sudden. Morse looked to be loafing. Maybe his struggles are getting to him.

Joe Seamhead said...

Ugly.

I think Burnett's shut down for 2012 should be now, hopefully he can bounce back in the Spring

I think he's a free agent ... I doubt he'll be back ... but you never know.

mick said...

well as far as what is aid about the Cards not having momentum... thank the bull pen for giving it back to them.... this is a really bad game and it is up to Davey to calm the ship.

peric said...

And no Nats fans Lannan is not a good replacement for Burnett ... but Zach Duke? Perhaps!

mick said...

peric... i did not know that about Burnett... my preference would be to see him depart. I am hearing the Nats want a lefty closer any way in the off season and it is clear, it ain't Sean

If he asks for too much they will let him go ... if they know he is injured but the injury isn't permanently debilitating they'll work with him. Its not like they are dripping with left-handed bullpen help. That end of the farm system cupboard is pretty sparse right now.

DJB said...

O.K., I think we must admit that the Cards have a more potent lineup, and will probably take this series. The question is: do we stand pat and wait for our youngsters to grow up or do we trade and/or acquire the pieces to compete with the Cards? I think you must trade for players with playoff experience and ability to mix with the youngsters. You generally cannot "develop" playoff success alone.

jw said...

@DJB -- I'm missing something. Won't our roster have playoff experience when this series is over, no matter what the outcome?
