NLDS Game 1: Nats at Cardinals

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
The Nationals' first-ever postseason runs begins today at Busch Stadium.
ST. LOUIS -- The time has come. No more pontificating. No more speculation. No more anticipation. The postseason has arrived for the Washington Nationals, and all that's left to do is take the field and play ball.

No surprises from Davey Johnson with his Game 1 lineup. It's the same one he fielded throughout the final two weeks of the pennant race. He doesn't have any surprises planned for his use of the pitching staff and said all of his relievers are capable of going back-to-back-to-back days if necessary. And he didn't feel any need to speak to his entire roster as a group in advance of this series.

"If I had a meeting," the 69-year-old skipper said, "they'd think I was panicking or something."

So there's nothing really left to say except: Enjoy the game, and please check back here for updates and analysis throughout...

3:08 p.m. -- Seventy-nine years to the day since the final game of the 1933 World Series, Washington is back in the postseason. We are underway with a ball low from Adam Wainwright to Jayson Werth.

3:12 p.m. -- And Wainwright proceeds to set the Nats down in order on 10 pitches. He struck out Werth on a curveball in the dirt. He got Bryce Harper to ground out on the very first pitch he saw. And he struck out Ryan Zimmerman on a curveball in the dirt. Guys a little overanxious in the top of the first? Could be. Here comes Gio Gonzalez.

3:23 p.m. -- Gio Gonzalez might have been battling a few nerves there in the bottom of the first. He was kind of flying open and firing a bunch of fastballs up and way outside to right-handed hitters, leading to a two-out walk of Matt Holliday. But he escaped unscathed, finishing with 18 pitches (nine strikes) and moving this scoreless game into the second inning.

3:39 p.m. -- And the Nationals take the lead, with one of their most clutch hitters from September delivering again in October: Kurt Suzuki. The catcher and No. 8 hitter smacked a two-out single to left, scoring Adam LaRoche from third and giving the Nationals a 1-0 lead. They had a chance to really do some damage after Wainwright incredibly walked Gio on four pitches to load the bases for Werth, but the veteran right fielder grounded out to end the inning. All things considered, though, the Nats can't complain about holding an early 1-0 lead.

4:02 p.m. -- Well, I suppose there are two ways you could look at this. 1) Through two innings, Gio Gonzalez has a no-hitter going. 2) His mechanics are a complete mess. Five walks in two innings, a wild pitch, only 27 of 55 pitches for strikes. Somehow, he managed to limit the Cardinals to two runs, a minor miracle. But Gio is as off so far today as we've seen him at any point this year. Nats trail 2-1 after two.

4:18 p.m. -- And of course Gonzalez comes out for the third inning with the weight of the world on his left shoulder and proceeds to retire the side on 16 pitches (11 strikes). Davey Johnson talked this morning about how anytime he gets into trouble early, Gio calms his manager down by telling him he'll be OK. He just proved it there. Still 2-1 Cards after three. Gio hasn't allowed a hit but he's already thrown 71 pitches.

4:30 p.m. -- On the surface, it didn't look like the Nats much of anything at the plate in the top of the fourth. Here's one big thing they did, though: Ian Desmond (after singling for his second hit of the day) took out Daniel Descalso with a great slide to break up a potential inning-ending double play. That allowed Gio Gonzalez to come to the plate and allowed the Nats to turn over their lineup heading into the fifth. Honestly, that's a big deal. If Gio can get through the bottom of the fourth in one piece, the Nats will have the top of their lineup in place for the fifth with a chance to get things going again.

4:39 p.m. -- Danny Espinosa has had an awful day at the plate so far, striking out in both of his at-bats with men on base. But even when he's struggling at the plate, he still brings a lot to the table. Witness the 6-4-3 double play he just helped turn to close out the fourth inning. Superb job. So it remains 2-1 Cards, and Gio's pitch count is at a still-manageable 83. He can go at least one more inning, maybe two if he's efficient.

4:53 p.m. -- Make it nine strikeouts for Wainwright through five innings, eight of them on curveballs. The Nats actually have put seven men on base but haven't been able to string much of anything together. They're 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position so far. Still 2-1 Cardinals as we move to the bottom of the fifth.

5:10 p.m. -- Well, that's going to wind up as one of the craziest-looking pitching lines in postseason history. Gio Gonzalez, ladies and gentlemen: 5 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 7 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 110 pitches, 59 strikes. And after all that, the Nats trail 2-1 through five. Have to consider themselves incredibly fortunate to be in this position.

5:31 p.m. -- The good news: The Nats knocked Wainwright out of the game, after he struck out 10 in 5 2/3 innings. The bad news: Jayson Werth has stranded the bases loaded twice in six innings today. He did it in the top of the second, grounding out to short. And he just did it in the sixth, striking out with reliever Lance Lynn on the mound. So much of postseason success is predicated on clutch hitting. Well, the Nats are 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position so far today. And because of it, they still trail 2-1. Craig Stammen in for the bottom of the sixth.

5:41 p.m. -- Wow, what a catch from Werth to atone for his strikeout moments earlier. He went back to the wall in right field, battled the sun and robbed Daniel Descalso of a two-run homer. Fantastic play to keep this a 2-1 game, with credit also to Stammen for striking out Skip Schumaker to end the sixth with two men on. Harper, Zimmerman and LaRoche coming up for the Nats against Edward Mujica.

5:50 p.m. -- Nothing doin' in the seventh as Mujica retires the side on six pitches. The Nats are down to their last six outs.

6:01 p.m. -- Holy moly, what a performance from Ryan Mattheus! Thrust into the worst kind of jam -- bases loaded, nobody out, heart of the lineup up -- he managed to record three outs on two pitches and keep this a 2-1 game. Remarkable. As poorly as the Nats have played today, they're still one swing from tying this game. Crazy stuff.

6:19 p.m. -- Sweet Fancy Moses! Tyler Moore, ladies and gentlemen! Two-out, two-strke, two-run single to right. The Nats lead 3-2 on the biggest hit of the rookie's life. Now Tyler Clippard has to get through the bottom of the eighth. How's everyone holding up out there?

6:31 p.m. -- Paul Emmel just gave Clippard the outside corner. And then he gave him four more inches on top of that. Whatever, Clippard will take his inning-ending strikeout of Matt Carpenter with the tying run on second. Eighth inning over. The Nats are three Drew Storen outs from winning Game 1.

6:39 p.m. -- We go to the bottom of the ninth. Drew Storen vs. the top of the order, up 3-2.

6:47 p.m. -- It's over. It's all over. The Nats win 3-2, a remarkable ballgame to open this postseason.

Swami, just to clarify, I was agreeing with you in regards to missing the play due to the chatter by the TV guys.

baseballswami said...

Got it , Joe. That was annoying. I see the Nats being rusty from too many days off, especially Gio. Cards have momentum from Friday and are at home. This is the advantage to the number one seed?? Garcia up ???

Steady Eddie said...

That was a gimme from Emmer to Beltran, even the announcers are saying so. One thing to not give him the corner but that was entirely in the zone.

NatsLady said...

Well, he was getting strikes. He's losing it now.

We've lost our Comcast feed for the game. Damnit!

Try standard def, Joe. I'm not having a problem with it.

For those who lost TV coverage, Gio got out of a 2 on 1 out jam be getting Holliday to K and Craig to pop up to ALR. Still 2-1 after 5.

This update courtesy of DirecTV.

NatsLady said...

And Gio gets out of it. Davey was not going to take Gio out if there was any chance of him finishing the 5th inning. Pitcher wins may not mean much to the saber guys, but they mean something to the pitchers. Also, Davey is, believe it or not, still in "teaching mode." With luck, Gio will be in even higher leverage situations.

Joe Seamhead said...

We lost the HD, switched to std, def. and had it for two pitches, then lost the video, but had audio. Just got it back on.

Gio got through five. All things considered, it was not as bad as it could have been. A couple of hits among those walks would have been killers. He has no doubt grown from this and will be ready for a 5th game if we need him.

baseballswami said...

Fios is fine

Thanks 222.

I sure hope Gio is loading up on his Ritalin. His attention and focus is poor.

Knoxville Nat said...

9 k's in five innings..........maybe some small ball might be in order.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Oh good, Gio is done.

Phew-- next time, take your Ritalin, dude. You are a hyper-active attention deficit kid if I've ever seen one.

baseballswami said...

Any bets in this AB by Danny?

baseballswami said...

Well ?

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Espinosa is a total embarassment and hurts this team.

3rd of the game. As Espi takes over 2nd place in the Majors in Strikeouts.

Danny, you stink.

Play Lombo!!!

baseballswami said...

Since we are only hitting singles, maybe some small ball would be in order?

Section 222 said...

Gio didn't pitch well, but the Nats' non-existent bats are to blame for where we are at this point. 2 runs in 5 innings against this offense is not bad. Now we just have to come back against their bullpen. Ours is better.

Pressure brings out the worst tendencies of Nats Players.
Werth: Not clutch
Espinosa: Swings at anything
Gio: Walks everybody

feelanau said...

Why does everyone on our team swing at balls in the dirt?

peric said...

Werth isn't behaving like the post season veteran at this point. They need both he and Harper to get on base to be successful.

Right now Werth looks to be backing up instead of the stepping up as one playoff veteran described, referring to the two genres of playoff players.

There's still time. Werth needs to do a lot better.

BigCat said...

11 k's after 6 for us. Why do we swing at so many balls out of zone? I'll bet at least 9 of the k's are curves bouncing. Davey has got to sit Espi down. He has no idea or clue where the ball is. It is almost comical.

Knoxville Nat said...

Sports Illustrated had an excellent article by Tom Verducci (I think) analyzing the MLB playoffs in which he pointed out the high number of strikeouts all across baseball this year and said that in the modern playoffs contact with the bat was a key to winning. He went on to say that the high number of K's was a weakness of the Nats and right now we are making him look like a genius. So,who did SI choose to print a picture of in the magazine to accompany the article? Danny Espinosa of course.

And NatsJack, why I would agree that Espinosa has a higher ceiling than Lombo to his career, if Espi can't reduce his frequency of strikeouts over a season I see him playing somewhere else within a year or two.

peric said...

Good description.

Still even with the pitching gaffes ... the score? 2-1 against one of the most potent offenses in baseball.

Right now the onus looks to be on the offense.

Section 222 said...

Lighten up on Werth there. He had two strikes, fouled off a number of pitches. A breaking ball was going to come at some point, he just didn't recognize it. It was a great pitch.

Stammen seems to be on. 3 more shots to get some offense going.

peric said...

And NatsJack, why I would agree that Espinosa has a higher ceiling than Lombo to his career, if Espi can't reduce his frequency of strikeouts over a season I see him playing somewhere else within a year or two.

I don't know how the FO feels about it but I think, once again, a comparison between Ian Desmond last year, and Ian Desmond this year? Why would you think that an athlete of Espinosa's stature can't improve ... perhaps far more than Desmond did? Sophomore year jinx.

Give the top baby Nats some patience. Its paid dividends this season.

mick said...

Well I won't mistake Jayson for Mr October. The first time he does not deliver with the bases loaded, fine, but the second time, being a veteran player with post season experience, makes this very, very disappointing.

Gio was not at his best, but he did deliver, I have no issues with Gio.

I have major issues with Espi and I would expect Davey to consider going with Lombo at 2nd the rest of this series. There is no time to have Espi work out his head problems batting left handed. His at bats look like April at bats not post season at bats

peric said...

Werth makes up for his bat with his glove ... thank god!

Section 222 said...

Yeah, Werth is so not clutch.

Exposremains said...

Why is the play-play guy gets excited about every little things the Cards do and nothing for Nats.

BigCat said...

Yes, agree Knox. A high ceiling doesn't help us now. It seems like everytime we have a man on 3rd with less than two outs, when all we need is a groundout or flyout to score the run, Espi is up and flailing like a little leaguer. You have got to sit him down

peric said...

I have major issues with Espi and I would expect Davey to consider going with Lombo at 2nd the rest of this series.

Patience Grasshopper.

NatsNut said...

Werth: Back up THIS.

Joe Seamhead said...

Well that catch may fire up the Nats. Great catch by Werth to keep it close.

peric said...

Why is the play-play guy gets excited about every little things the Cards do and nothing for Nats.

The Baby Nats need to build their reps. The talking heads like a good story. They will do the job. There is a reason they finished with the best record in baseball ... they aren't slouches, not even the E man.

sm13 said...

Jayson Werth is no Coco Crisp, thankfully.

BigCat said...

And you can see when a guy is on the ball and the pitcher just makes a good pitch. Espi has no idea what is going on up there. He is missing pitches by 12 inches

Section 222 said...

Stammen is superb. Great weapon to have. Harp leading off. This is our chance against the Cards' BP.

NatsNut said...

I'm very impressed that with all that, the Cards still only lead by 1. We got crazy lucky today and I bet we rally here in a sec.

peric said...

Stammen had a bit of an adventure. I fear we might see more of the same with Mattheus, Clippard, and Storen. None have any playoff experience either.

What the hell was Gio doing in the second? I am so anti walk it pissed me off to read that inning. What was his problem?

baseballswami said...

Were those actual strikes that Sta(y)men was throwing? I hardly recognized them. Funny how the other guys were so wild but Craig hit a guy.

Exposremains said...

delcaso the defensive play of the game..Really? Werth's catch is not a game saving play?? TBS guy sounds like a Cards homer.

Knoxville Nat said...

Peric, I didn't say that Espi can't improve, what I'm saying is if he doesn't improve (reduce) the strikeouts and if he doesn't do a better job of putting the ball in play I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a differenet uni in a couple of years. I'm hoping he makes a Desmond like improvement, believe me I am.

baseballswami said...

Who is next? Can he throw strikes ?

baseballswami said...

Really? Bad hops now ? Stammen throws strikes after Gio was all over the place and it backfires. Who angered the baseball gods?

JaneB said...

Our bats can be hot, but when they aren't, yikes. Stammen didn't help us this inning, but we are losing because we can't get anyone across the plate, even when we have three on. I wish there was some way to help them.

baseballswami said...

Yips.

mick said...

Our bull pen and team have been rested since Wed... is there any reason Davey went with Stammen in the 7th that I am missing??

Again, we need good, clutch, situational hitting. Bases loaded? Man on third with no outs ? Fold.

What an ugly offensive game from Werth & Espinosa. Maybe Davey will consider inserting Lombardozzi at 2nd base and batting leadoff tomorrow.

NatsLady said...

So, Danny did ok, right? Saved at least one run with great double-play and the sac bunt meant the lead run scored.

JaneB said...

Espi did the right thing. Better to lay down a bunt and maybe advance the runner(s). ANd as it happened, that is what made Tyler's hit a 2RBI hit. You're just looking to be mad at Danny, me thinks.

baseballswami said...

Let a rookie show everyone how it's done! Six huge outs to get now.

peric said...

Speaking of Espinosa ... Jayson Werth yet another strike out. Looks just as bad if not worse than Espy at this point. Espy is at least in his sophomore year ... what's up with Jayson? He has to know that this kind of lead against the Cardinals offense is tenuous at best?

NatsNut said...

Moore: That wasn't so hard.

Mattheus and Moore, Clip and Store(n).

D'Gourds, I don't think Morse could have made it, given where that ball fell. But it's all good. Now we have to hang on for two innings more. 6 outs.

rogieshan said...

NatsLady: "So, Danny did ok, right?"

Only if the manager had called for a bunt, which I seriously doubt.

Uh Oh -- it's Clip.

There goes the lead.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Only if the manager had called for a bunt, which I seriously doubt.

Joe Seamhead said...

YOWSA! Way to go, Tyler Moore.
Jayson has had better days at the plate.
Clip coming in.
As to Espinosa's bunt, I have no idea whose idea it was, but it moved Desi to 2nd. He ended up being the go ahead run on Tyler's single.Only happened because of the bunt.
Oh crap, Ryan!

Danny played excellent defense tonight. Two tough double plays turned. But no, that sac bunt was not "doing ok." Nor were his earlier Ks.

Davey played the percentages by burning Tracy, even when the alternative was the rookie. Now he goes with Clip, even though Mattheus only made 3 pitches. But he's going with what got him 98 wins.

Can Clip hold this runner?

Sect 222: i agree that Clip's 4-seamer no longer rises -- no more hop. No one mentions that his fastball is down a mile or two either.

And yes, the inconsistent home plate ump helped us out there -- finally.

Peric.. Reports are Rendon at 2B

I'm thinking about Drew's Dad now, after that SI article.

NL, it was Kemp's labrum that had to be reattached. Even more amazing that he had the power he did this year. That's what ALR injured, and he had nothing last year.

Wha happened? I used to rail about Zim's throw -- and the entire forum pounced on me--

Now that it's the playoffs, everyone agrees. Funny how things work out.

I accept all tacit apologies.

Still a rumor he's listed at third in the roster.

@MicheleS: YOu were right; I was wrong.
There's not enough Maalox in North America to get me through this game.

Let;s Clipp and Store this one!

And here we go.

If I'm Matheny, I'm bunting down third -- often. Anyone seen the old Movie "The Monte Stratton Story'? That's what they did to him and he was f-i-n-i-s-h-e-d.

Matheny, fortunately, has too much class to do that.

Article I read says it was both. Also says he injured it on August 28, which explains why he couldn't do much in September.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp had arthroscopic surgery on Friday to repair his rotator cuff and shoulder in his left arm.

Dr. Neal ElAttrache repaired a torn labrum and did a minor debridement of the rotator cuff at Kerlan-Jobe Clinic.

Kemp will begin physical therapy in the next 7-to-10 days and will be unable to swing a bat for the next three months, but should be ready for the start of next season when the Dodgers open their campaign against San Francisco on April 1.

He injured his shoulder on Aug. 28 when he ran, full-speed, into the center- field wall at Coors Field in a loss to the Colorado Rockies. The two-time All- Star missed the next two games, but played down the stretch even though he struggled and didn't have a hit in a season-ending series against San Francisco.

Wow. Have not read the game thread. Took busy chewing my nails to hold the tablet!!

Nice way for Gio to gut it out, not having his best stuff. Home field advantage is now ours!!

peric said...

Kind of a typical game from earlier in the regular season. Remember? No offense, good defense, stellar pitching. Felt very familiar.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Shades of April and May -- 'cause that's how we won that one. Pitching and a timely hit or two. Phew!!!

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Great minds think alike? Didn't you know that about you, Peric. (chuckling)
