Yes, it's been awhile since D.C. has hosted anything along these lines, with the first-place Nationals trying to hold off the second-place Braves over the next three nights and perhaps extend their five-game lead to even greater numbers.
We've got a great pitching matchup to kick this series off: Jordan Zimmermann starts for the Nats against Braves ace Tim Hudson. All the healthy regulars are in both teams' lineups. All that's left to do is play the games.
Check back here, of course, for updates and analysis throughout...

6:38 p.m. -- Uh-oh, the tarp is being rolled out over the infield as we speak, and there are ominous-looking clouds approaching from the west. It would certainly appear unlikely this game will begin on-time.
7:05 p.m. -- And we're officially in a rain delay. Looks like it'll just be one heavy line of storms passing through, and then that should be it. In the meantime, if you haven't seen it, here's the updated story on Lucas Giolito, who Mike Rizzo acknowledges may need Tommy John surgery.
7:35 p.m. -- Update: The game will start at 8 p.m.
8:01 p.m. -- And we're underway after a 56-minute delay. Much smaller crowd than we had over the weekend -- the place is probably half-full -- but it's a plenty boisterous group nonetheless.
8:14 p.m. -- Well, that wasn't what the Nats or Jordan Zimmermann had in mind. At the same time, it could've been worse. A lot worse. A Martin Prado double followed by a Jason Heyward single put the Braves up 1-0. And when Zimmermann walked Chipper Jones, the right-hander appeared to be in a world of trouble. Then salvation came from an unexpected source: Kurt Suzuki. Heyward tried to steal third base -- something you expected the Braves to do a lot of in this series -- but Suzuki gunned him down with a perfect throw. Zimmermann then got Freddie Freeman to fly out and end the top of the first with only one run across the plate. Could've been much, much worse.
8:31 p.m. -- So much for the Nats having to dig themselves out of an early hole. They just put up a 4-spot in the bottom of the first. Mercy. Jayson Werth led off with a double to left, then scored moments later on Bryce Harper's opposite-field single. Ryan Zimmerman lined a base hit to right. Michael Morse then smoked a comebacker that would've gone through for a hit had it not deflected off Hudson's pitching hand and right to shortstop Paul Janish. The Braves trainer came out to check on Hudson, but he apparently was fine to continue. Not that he pitched like it. Adam LaRoche battled his way through a great at-bat before finally tapping an RBI groundout to first. And then the big blast: Ian Desmond destroyed the first pitch he saw from Hudson, launching it into the left-field bleachers for a 2-run homer that left this place rocking. It was Desmond's first hit in 12 at-bats since coming off the DL. Guess he's got his timing back now. The Nats lead 4-1 after a wild first inning.
8:46 p.m. -- Another walk for Werth, who has reached in both plate appearances so far tonight. It's remarkable how productive he's been since coming back from the DL himself at the start of the month. Onto to the third inning, the Nats still up 4-1.
8:59 p.m. -- Desmond rips another ball, though this one was on the ground and snagged by Dan Uggla to start a 4-6-3 double play that ended the bottom of the third. The Nats have put seven men on base already against Hudson and still lead 4-1 after three.
9:14 p.m. -- No doubt about it, Zimmermann is laboring tonight. He's needed 83 pitches just to get through four innings, which means he may only have one left. He's made pitches when he really needs to for the most part, though he just gave up a run in the fourth when Espinosa couldn't quite make a backhanded snag of Janish's low line drive that would've ended the inning. So it's 4-2 as we move to the fifth and the Nats face the prospect of using a lot of relievers to get through this one.
9:31 p.m. -- And this game is tied again after Heyward tattoos a 92 mph fastball from Zimmermann into the right-field bullpen, a two-run shot. Zimmermann finished out the inning, but that'll be it for him. Perhaps his least-effective start of the season: 5 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 102 pitches. It's 4-4 in the middle of the fifth.
9:37 p.m. -- Meanwhile, the Nats have only one hit since Desmond's homer in the first. They had Hudson dazed and searching for the ropes but weren't able to deliver the knockout punch. So now it's onto the sixth inning, with Tom Gorzelanny in to pitch in relief of Zimmermann (who cannot get the decision).
10:05 p.m. -- Really poor execution by the bottom of the Nats lineup in the bottom of the sixth. They had two on with nobody out after LaRoche singled and Desmond walked. But Espinosa struck out swinging at a 2-2 changeup, Suzuki lined out to center and then pinch-hitter Roger Bernadina swung at a pitch up at his eyelids for strike two and then took the next pitch for strike three. So it remains 4-4 as we move to the seventh. Ryan Mattheus now in for the Nats, Tim Hudson still pitching for the Braves.
10:28 p.m. -- Wow, another wasted opportunity for the Nats after Werth led off the seventh with a cue shot off third base for a gift double. Fredi Gonzalez had to turn to lefty Jonny Venters to face Harper in a huge spot, but Harper was asked to drop a bunt (he missed the sign on the first pitch, then barely got it down after that). So now with the go-ahead runner on third, Venters intentionally walked Zimmerman. That set the stage for Morse ... who immediately grounded into a 6-4-3 double play on the very first pitch he saw. Crushing. Onto the eighth, still 4-4.
10:43 p.m. -- Man, the Nats bullpen has been teetering on a tightrope tonight. Five walks issued in three innings, yet they have avoided giving up a run. Drew Storen somehow navigated his way through the top of the eighth. So it remains 4-4 and we are in serious crunch time now.
10:49 p.m. -- Tonight's official paid attendance: 21,298. I know it's rainy Monday night and all, but, really guys?
10:59 p.m. -- Another golden opportunity for the Nats in the bottom of the eighth: Bases loaded, one out. Davey Johnson showed faith in Tyler Moore to pinch-hit against lefty Eric O'Flaherty, but the rookie popped out on an 0-1 pitch for the second out. That left it in the hands of Werth, who got ahead 2-0, then 3-1, then fouled off a couple of fastballs, then with the crowd roaring sent a deep fly ball to left field that was ... caught at the warning track. Onto the ninth, still 4-4. Sean Burnett in to face the heart of the Braves' lineup.
11:10 p.m. -- Burnett strands two men on in the top of the ninth. Onto the bottom, with Harper, Zimmerman and Morse due up to face Chad Durbin.
11:16 p.m. -- Nope, no big rally in the ninth for the Nats as Durbin retires the side on eight pitches. So we're going extras here, still 4-4, as Tyler Clippard enters from the bullpen.
11:25 p.m. -- Clippard sets em down in order in the top of the 10th. So it's LaRoche, Desmond and Espinosa in the bottom of the inning against lefty Luis Avilan.
11:33 p.m. -- Nope. Onto the 11th. Michael Gonzalez is in to pitch, which leaves only Craig Stammen left in the pen. With Stephen Strasburg starting tomorrow, that's not a good position for the Nats to be in.
11:42 p.m. -- Man, how many times can the Nats bullpen strand runners in scoring position? They've been remarkable at it tonight, and they keep giving their lineup a chance because of it. Onto the bottom of the 11th. Avilan still in for the Braves. Suzuki, a pinch-hitter and Werth due up.
11:56 p.m. -- Steve Lombardozzi hadn't seen a live pitch since Wednesday. And comes off the bench in the bottom of the 11th to stroke a single to left. Remarkable. Werth then got ahead 3-0, fouled off six straight pitches and then sent a fly ball to deep right field that was ... caught right at the fence by Heyward. Harper then struck out with a bad-looking swing at a breaking ball and destroyed his bat in response. So it's onto the 12th, and here's Craig Stammen, the last man out of the Nats bullpen.
12:03 a.m. -- Stammen gets the job done in the top of the 12th. Now it's Zimmerman, Morse and LaRoche against Cristhian Martinez.
12:14 a.m. -- Onto the 13th! Here's the crazy thing: The Pirates and Cardinals yesterday still had SEVEN more innings to play from this point on!
12:18 a.m. -- Another scoreless inning for Stammen, who is well-suited to pitch this kind of game. Looks like Edwin Jackson is in the bullpen starting to loosen up just in case. He threw 103 pitches two days ago.
12:29 a.m. -- Wow, what a crazy finish. Espinosa goes first to third on an infield single by Suzuki. Then Chad Tracy hits a hard grounder right to Uggla, who had Espinosa DOA at the plate. Except he couldn't get the ball out of his glove. The Nats win 5-4 in 13 innings and take a 6-game lead in the NL East.

I don't understand why they aren't pounding the outside?
Either 1) he's trying to, and missing; or 2) he doesn't trust his control, and doesn't want to be wild over the plate (again) at that height. Just my guess. Either that, or they weren't planning on pitching those particular hitters that way.
Agreed about the fence - pad it, and put the out-of-town scoreboard over the Red Porch.
Zimm bad tonight. Hudson rolling. Not looking good.
Secret, happy thoughts please :-)
Mr mooooooomentum has changed. What a shame to blow that lead. Now gorzzo? Goodnight.
4 hits in the first inning. 1 since. Come on guys concentrate.
Momentum changes a lot in this series this year. we had a 9-0 lead and gave that away.. We had 3 run lead we gave that away, however we lead the series. Strange.
How close was Morse on knocking that out.
Come on Gorzo. The guy has never hit you.
This is what they mean by "dogfights." We get two and half more games of this.
You know how big that non-play was by Danny on Janish's little liner to him, if it was an out then Hudson would have led off the next inning.
Davey throws in the white flag I see Gorxzy who is good for at least one run it seens in close games is in.
Indeed, Gonat. E4, I thought.
Is it me, or has there been an inordinate number of outs in the air tonight?
Really only need 1 win in this series. Would be nice to get the first one.
Gonat. at 9:42, very good point. Have to make the Janish play.
Yep, you get Janish then the score remains 4-1 and in the 5th you face Hudson, Bourn, then Prado.
Ah, geez, the Phillies Phans In Nats Clothing are back.
Well, everybody has something to contribute, if only to serve as a cautionary example.

Too many by the visitors.
Already broke out the Malaax. Gorzy drives me crazy. Way too many walks for a reliever.
Time for the Nats to get the bats going.
If Nats take the lead I think you have to get Burnett and Mattheus up.
Wow, Desmond with a WALK!!!!
Wow.. a Desi walk.. who knew!
Is it me, or has there been an inordinate number of outs in the air tonight?

Exactly 2 in every inning except the first, when Freeman made one on the bases. That's 11 in the air, 2 Ks and a sac bunt, out of 18 so far. These guys are hacking.
Not one pitch in the zone against Danny
Rain delays, pennant races, struggling pitchers, need maalox, need bourbon - this winning team thing is a lot more stressful than the losing team thing was.
Shark week continues!
An Espi sac bunt would have set up a nice 1 out with men on 3rd and 2nd.
How bad is Suzuki when rob gets excited about a short fly to center.
Doom and gloom time. That was despicable. Danny swings at everything. Roger swings at nothing.
Davey lives and dies by the big innings. That inning was a slow death.
Wow. Well, the good news is we are back to the top of the order next inning.
Off-topic, belated response that Original Nats Fan probably won't even see: enough people were typing preying that I figured they weren't all jokes. Should have said I wasn't aiming my correction at you.
More on-topic: Dagnabbit!
Shoot the messenger in this case--blame Carpenter. Suzuki was fine, would have scored the run with second and third and 1 out, or if he'd gotten under it a smidge less it might have made the gap.
Gonat I agree. A lot of wasted opportunities in this one.
Gee whiz Espi looked like early season Espit agian. He was pitched 5 balls and swung at three of them, the walk would load the bases with0 outs. That is what he was doing early in the season.
Shark then resorts to April ball too. Swing at 2 balls (would have been a 3-0 count, and doesn;t even think about swinging at one right down the middle.
Come on guys this reverting to bad habits.
Davey knows Espinosa is a terrible bunter, but why leave Suzuki to hit when there are better options in Tracy, Lombo & the Shark?
... in spite of my usual approval of all Davey does, I have to say he blew this one. Even I knew what Danny had to do: LAY DOWN THE D***ED BUNT!
... but hey, the game's not over yet.
Go Nats!!
Do the nats seem a little intimidated by the braves?
Pitcher's best friend named DP
Pitchers worst nightmare. The walk. Although umpire is awful.
You couldn't even roll a ball down to 3rd as well as Werth just hit that!
Intimidated, no. Over-eager, maybe.
Oh, Desi! You gotta make that play. Great throw by Suzuki. Nuts.
7 walks........killer
hey gang welcome to playoff baseball
Loving Zuki's necklace - shells, not some magnetic fad-science junk.
hey gang welcome to playoff baseball
Well said, Mick.
Of course, they could be magnetic shells...
only bummer tonight was Jordan not bringing his A-game and Espi and Sharks KO, other than that... a very good game, Storen clutch.... let's get em in in 8th!!!
Although, to be fair, this isn't exactly crisp on the part of either team.
These Kardiac Kids are killing Davey...
I bet Braves Insider reads about like Nats Insider. :)
Where you been,mick?
OK, Rally Napkins, people!!
Alright, here we go, nice ALR
Better to be the home team! Lets get a hit ALR
hey Joe... daughter had my lab top, lol
Danny's time for redemption here.
RH Danny gets respect, Braves CF appears to be in Rockville...
Swift, more like Olney. LF is in Rockville.
Swift, good one!
RALLY
NAPKINS!
Need another Wild Pitch here!
When is the last time Desi and Espi walked in the first game? Wow
Got the walk and almost got the walk + wild pitch.
oh boy...
why only 21,000?
SAME game, I mean
Good Stop sign by Bo
This is TyMo's biggest spot of his career. Let's do it!
Just get it in the air Tyler...Please
just a fly ball Tyler, thats all
Note to self: LF is in Olney, CF is in Greenbelt, or College Park. RF is in FedEx field.
RALLY
NAPKINS
Nuts, not what I meant...
Thanks Z-Mantis, I'm from VA so my MD geography is weak...I do know that BWI is not in Baltimore OR Washington...
That hasn't been a strike all night.
I thought that was it by Jayson.
just a total bummer!
21,000 for a game like this is a travesty. By the time this one is over, that will be down to about 10,000. I guess 3rd Eye Blind (circa 2012) is a bigger draw than this baseball team. Really makes me sick. There are more people watching the Brewers vs. Cubs in Milwaukee and Rockies vs. Mets in NY. This is not a baseball town. Redskins will always rule the roost around here and that is why they get all the press on the radio and in the paper. People still aren't paying attention to this team, and probably never will unless it is a Saturday night. Not talking about NI fans, I know you guys actually care.
I thought he had it too Gonat...must have just missed the sweet spot...Dang it
Swift, not my geography so much as remembering the orientation of the park.
My tickets are for tomorrow.
HP umpire is simply pathetic, shame on MLB to have a clown like him do a game of this magnitude. MLB can do better than him.
Oh soooo close.
Well, it sure makes for some excitement!
however, umpire or not, bases loaded 1 out you have to get a run in.
My tickets are for tomorrow...I think a lot of people went to at least 1 game over the weekend, and decided to wait for the Stras game...I know that's what I did...
Even without the desired result, great at-bat by Werth in that situation.
When I came to the plate, I thought to myself "Man, im glad it's Werth in this situation".
Regardless of how this game ends, can you imagine thinking/saying that last year?!
Werth had a great AB
When he*
Hey, it's August. The tourists who walk up were scared away by the rain, the Braves were never a big draw here--heck, they barely draw at home--and some folks still have jobs.
Tough to ask a rookie to be the go-to right-handed bat off the bench. Team may want to consider adding a veteran pinch-hitting specialist to complement Chad Tracy for the postseason.
And did we mention school started today.
rogieshan, maybe Izturis?
Good point rogieshan...that was more of a "Mark DeRosa Situation"...despite what the Stat-Heads think, experience is big this time of year...
Not that Izturis would have hit better, but TyMo should have gone down and gotten AB's... It's really hard for a young hitter to come off the bench, and Davey's not going to let him play instead of LaRoche or Morse.
This will set up Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, and Michael Morse. Who wants to be the hero?
Zim is due a Mr. Walk-Off moment in the biggest game of the year!
Not exactly dominant, but 4 innings of 0's from the pen...PFB
wow, our bullpen just pitched 4 scoreless innings!
Yeah, jobs. I won't be at any of the three games. Can't afford it. Will go into hock for the playoffs...

Davey earlier in the year in a similar situation with a LHP on the mound put in Chad Tracy and he got a hit.

Harper is going yard off of Durbin!!!
Time for a walk off, whadda say gang!!!
Ryan's done it to the Braves before....that was probably the biggest game in Nats history, until tonight...
Really would like to not see Kimbrel tonight, that dude is FILTHY!!
Wow - Harper running 1/3 speed to first on that? Sign of the Apocalypse?

Let's go Beast Mode!!!!
Chad Durbin's Revenge...
Who was Durbin barking at in the Nats dugout on his way off the mound?
wow, really thought we would get better AB verse Durbin
Please let's not go 19. Boy, these teams are evenly matched now that both are healthy.
This should be the NLCS!
Let's see. Is this exciting, or is it just frustrating?
I saw that too Gonat...Need Kristina to report that..she's right there..
Joe both, but no matter what we will still be in first
Braves radio just referred to Clippard as "the funky right hander"...They're good
Who was Durbin barking at in the Nats dugout on his way off the mound?
Probably Davey, maybe Rizzo in absentia. Wow, some guys do carry a grudge, don't they?
Matt Damon up... I mean Bourn up, lol
always think of Bourn Identity, lol
Great inning by Klip!!! Let's go ALR, Desi and Espi!
Yes Sir Mr T!!! now lets win this boys!!!
Mick, may we assume that's corn liquor you're drinking tonight?
So Close!!
The Z... Miller Light, lol Coronas I now only drink on weekends... see, I'm improving, lol
(whoosh)
Oy, vey!
Desi is so eager to hit. Needs to settle down.
That was painfully close from ALR.
Would like to see our batters be a little more patient at the plate at this point in the game. Seems like they are averaging 3 pitches per AB.
Is it me, or does Espinosa look unusually pale?
He does look pale, now that you mention it.
Man, we have had some very ugly at bats tonight.
No idea what Desi was swinging at.
Where is Lombo as at least PH tonight?
Gorzy only pitched one inning, he will have to be first on tomorrow with Stras pitching.
Game of inches.
OH, pooooh. I was SURE that was foul.
I hear Danny's changed to the fragrance-free moisturizer with aloe vera and a little sunscreen...makes him look pale
Should have had them in 8th, now Hayward, Jones and
Freeman up
Two plays tonight missing ball into glove. Costly plays. And yet, we are tied.
huge out!!!
6 innings of 0's from the pen..can't ask for more than that...
Either way, some pressure on Stras to go deep tomorrow...He's never thrown an 8th inning pitch in his Nats career...
come on 3rd base ump... were you napping on that
To pitch around that leadoff double was just clutch by MGonz
That is the best I have seen MGonzo! He was really focused, I mean, MAD.
Clutch clutch clutch
come on boys!!!!
come on 3rd base ump... were you napping on that
?? The check swing or the ball that hit the line? Both were good calls.
good point Swift
OK, Davey. Dancing with the devil for six innings... better get something here.
The Z... no problem with ball that hit line, my problem was Espi had the exact check swing earlier and he called it a strike
Sometimes Dave Johnson is a complete idiot. Tonight is one of those nights. Davey is an absolute Master in the clubhouse.
Too bad that doesn't transfer to the management of a game. Tonight, Davey has been brain dead.
Lombo is on
Lombo! Can't ask for more!
RoY - Lombo? Could he actually get consideration ? Man, he can flat out hit.
Lombo needs to play!!!
Sometimes I think Davey's love for power hitters betrays him. Lombo instead of Tyler Moore earlier?
Make no mistake about it: the Nats best run of the last 8 years happened when there was no Desmond. What did they go, 19-6? So Desi comes back -- starts booting the ball, dropping other balls, going 1-14. We bench perhaps the hottest hitter we had in Lombo. Lombo pinch hits and voila: basehit. Again, Davey is a genuis in the clubhouse and can be quite the Village Idiot when running a game and making out a lineup. Didn't Davey just give Harper the night off when it was apparent to ALL that the kid finally had broken his slump? Davey is a field idiot.
Tonight, Davey has been brain dead.
I don't agree, my comment just now notwithstanding. His bullpen management, for instance, has worked fine. It's not his fault if they swing at [stuff] they couldn't hit with a broom, on the first pitch.
Phillies Phan In Nats Clothing. Going out of your way to bash the team you are putatively a fan of, that's Phillies Phan stuff.
Oh yeah, right .. 'his bullpen management has been fine." Davey is gambling on scoring that lone run in the bottom half -- he has one pitcher left. If the game goes 13 or 14, Davey has willingly given the game away.
Great bullpen management.
Dang IT!!!!!
Pulling Harper was brilliant motivation. Wait and see.
DAMN!!!!!!!!11
Are you kidding me!!! Ugh.
Oh my! Thrice robbed of HR by mere feet!?! Twice Werth, once ALR.
Z you are a complete idiot. You sound like a soccer fan.
How frustrated must Werth be? A few feet away from two different walk-off HRs
I think that's against Mark's rules.
Was Harper talking to his bat?
You are against the rules. Go complain you litter twerp.
Say what you will about JZ's rough start, our offense is killing me right now.I mean, they were retired by Chad Durbin.
Bryce owes someone a new bat.
Not the soccer thing, the other. And you are two for three now--throw up on a little kid, while you're at it, get the hat trick.
But I'm feeding the troll again, aren't I?
Werth doesn't have HR power anymore...that is at least 5 balls he has hit to the warning track since he has been back. He is getting old.
Haha Z-Mantis, or he could just Boo Santa Claus...
very frustrating... I feel we should have won this by now. The Braves still can pitch Kimbrell and gives them the edge Either way... a great game and it would be no shame in losing
Uh, we just can't get it done tonight!!
All Werth needed was a hit in the 8th and game is over.
BOO Santa? Heck, they beat the old man up.
Adam LaRoche!
Braves bottom of order here, we are middle of order in 12th, if Stammen can hold, we will win it in 12th
May have to use a starting pitcher soon, Detwiler I assume, but Thursday is an off day...
223 hitter here, let's go Stammen
Mick, concur in part and dissent in part. Yes, we could have won half a dozen times. No, it would be a shame to lose.
I do wish they'd get Lombo more time -- I know Desi hits the long ball, but IMO Espi is far superior at SS, and you don't lose anything with Lombo at 2b -- and Lombo was so darn hot -- I don't know. Maybe we would do better with Espi and SS and Lombo as 2b permanently.
Anyone notice that Espi hits better when he plays at SS?
Sideways Sno-Cone!!!
I know most of us are not at the park, but hey, we're over 400 in here for about the fourth time ever, I think. And mostly good stuff. So there's that. Which is nice.
Plenty of good seats available at the stadium now. If the game goes 20 innings, someone going on down now can watch a good game from some great seats!
Man, these late-night west coast games are killing me. Oh,'we're at HOME? Nevermind.
Wow, NL East Heavyweights going toe-to-toe for three games, and burning the bullpen at both ends in game ONE. Is this great, or what??
Right on Z-Mantis...Stay on the High Road, like me and Denny Green
LET'S GET SOME (one) RUNS...
