Gorzelanny to start Sunday, Maya optioned

Tom Gorzelanny's recovery from elbow inflammation, combined with Yunesky Maya's inefficient performance, has given the Nationals reason to make a change to their rotation.

Gorzelanny will be activated off the disabled list Sunday and will start this weekend's series finale against the Orioles, while Maya has been optioned to Class AAA Syracuse and replaced by reliever Collin Balester, manager Jim Riggleman said.

Gorzelanny has been on the 15-day DL since May 24 after complaining of soreness in his throwing elbow, but after two weeks of rest he made a four-inning rehab start Monday night at Syracuse and pronounced himself healthy.

"I felt strong out there," he said Tuesday. "It was a good one, it was definitely needed to get my legs back under me. All in all, I felt really good out there."

Gorzelanny will take the rotation spot Maya had taken after the former got hurt. The Cuban right-hander slogged his way through

Since Gorzelanny wasn't in Syracuse yesterday and was supposedly watching the game in the Nats Park clubhouse, I guess it is NO surprise that he is back in the lineup.

The surprise is Balester is baaaack!

The next shoe will drop when Bixler heads back to Syracuse when Gorzo's activation is official.

The club will need to remove another player from the roster before Gorzelanny is activated on Sunday. At the moment, Riggleman has an extra man on his bench, so a position player is likely to draw the short straw.

Or, they could just DL Ankiel ...

They probably will DL Ankiel. Hairston and Bixler have both have played in the outfield and this way they get to keep Stairs a little while longer. Not to my liking at all concerning Stairs, but it's the reality of the situation. This way they keep Stairs through the remaining Inter League games which would end around the time Ankiel would come off the DL. Then they would have to cut someone at that time.

I they should keep Bixler. He fits in well with our take the extra base and solid defense approach. They should be able to find someone who is not quick or an above average fielder.

Good luck Yunesky. Glad to see you, Gorzy and Collin. May the odd man out be Matt Stairs. But! An Ankiel DL let's us keep Brian, which I think is good. He fits lots of holes, at least sort of.

Manassas Nats Fan......any similarities from this years Nats to the 69 Mets? Seems to me the Mets had good pitching and D all year and wore the Cubs down. I think that was when the black cat walked out on the field in front of the Cubs dugout. The Cubs and the Braves collapsed while the Mets got better and better.....eventually beating a heavily favored Oriole club in the series. The Nats are coming together as a team. You just never know.

Deported? Really? That's where you're going?

I'm sorry Maya hasn't been able to get it together and hope that some day he may. Interesting comment by Michele (I think it was) in another thread about how difficult it must be for him with his family being back in Cuba.

Did somebody post a comment three slots ago? I had the impression somebody who wouldn't attach a name to his/her post said something rude and out of order about Maya. Not sure.

Thanks for calling put Anon at 8:26. Maybe you thought you were making a cute pun, but it's an ugly sentiment, I prefer to think it was intended as a pun, without thought.

People can't imagine how tough it is to be away from family and also in a culture that is new and obviously unfamiliar not to mention the language barrier. I spent over 6 weeks teaching and coaching in Columbia for the USIA and even with a full-time translator I struggled often, and yet one of good old negative Anon's has to pipe in with inappropriate "stuff".

Mark, I realize most of the names here are not actual names but when you look at most of the negativity written by the anons isn't there anyway you can at least make them use a handle or nickname or something.

Still have the red curly W hat working and I am hoping Grandstander is back in his same seat tomorrow. I am at the park tomorrow and hope I am not a jinx.

Go Nats!!

Forcing people to sign in as Fugelencio Batista or whatever will not make them any less of a whatever. Just roll your eyes and move on, or call them on it if you need to, and move on. You can't fix them.

So, I wish the kid well, and maybe he'll settle down, but I think his confidence was shot all to hell, between Rizzo admittedly throwing him in the deep end last year, and leaving him there this year, it's just as well they owe him money and time.

Guess you are right sec 3 but at least I know who I am writing to. Agree that they rushed him last year. I think we have control for another 2 years and although it looks like a bad contract, maybe he will make the adjustments. I like leaving him as a starter for at least another year and then maybe seeing if he can switch to relief. He certainly is better the first time through a lineup then when he hits that 5th or 6th inning.

Yeah, sec3 is right, as has been demonstrated on other blogs. I agree with sjm re. the challenges of living in a foreign country. As a newlywed, I lived overseas for three years. I was somewhat conversant in the language at the start, although that picked up as time went by. My husband and I were lucky enough to have each other (and running home to mother wasn't the easiest option, which benefited the marriage imo, but I digress). I can't imagine how hard it must be when one is alone, and having defected as well. I had the impression that Livo had taken Yunesky under his wing, which is nice if so.

Big Cat, were you drinking last night? That 1969 Mets team won 100 games (that's right 100); if everything goes right for this team maybe they sniff 85 wins. Come back to Earth...

I have to admit I am surprised at how bad Maya has been. I agree with the person who said Rizzo may have ruined his confidence by tossing him out there last year. At this point, it may make sense to convert him to a middle relief role so that Slaten never darkens the bullpen again.

I wish Maya well but I'm with Mark Z, he hasn't proven that he is a major league pitcher and I'm beginning to think he never will. Not going to hammer him personally but I also think the Cuba family thing has become a lame excuse for poor performance, particularly after nearly a year in the organization. It may be true, but I seriously doubt he's hanging pitches to Albert Pujols because his wife in in Cuba. I think he's hanging pitches because he's not a good pitcher.

Maya has proven that he is, at least, not ready forthe major leagues.
