300 HRs, but what about 3,000 hits?

PHOENIX -- The ball sat in Ivan Rodriguez's locker at Chase Field, ready to be presented to the man who helped foster one of the greatest catching careers in baseball history.

After clubbing his 300th home run as a catcher, Pudge could think of only one worthy recipient: His father, Jose Rodriguez, who has attended many Nationals games this season and was in the crowd last night when his son reached this latest milestone.

"It took me a long time," said Rodriguez, who hadn't homered since May 16. "But it's always special to have my dad [here]."

Rodriguez became only the fifth catcher in baseball history in the 300-homer club, joining Mike Piazza, Carlton Fisk, Johnny Bench and Yogi Berra. He still wants to become the first catcher in the 3,000-hit club, but he remains 218 shy of that goal and figures to receive less playing time in 2011 as the Nationals try to get a look at newly acquired Wilson Ramos behind the plate.

MLB trade rumors reports Adam Dunn was placed on waivers today. Wouldn't that be true for hundreds of major leaguers and many Nats players not under long-term contract?

Can somebody please explain how the MLB Waiver Wire works? This is my first year following the sport and I don't get it at all. Is Dunn as good as gone?

Usually everyone on the 40 man roster is placed on waivers at this time. I would be curious which team would claim him, I heard the Giants could be one of the first but I doubt Sanchez or Bumgarner would make it through waivers or even that they would be traded even now. The point is since Dunn wasn't traded before the non-waiver trade deadline... I doubt he would be traded now.

Waivers are used at times to gauge interest but why would that be necessary at this point just after listening to offers at the deadline. If they waiver-trade him now (which I doubt could happen anyway) I would find it very obnoxious.

This explain it pretty good meixler.

The waivers you are thinking of are irrevocable waivers, which removes a player off the 40 man roster BUT once they go on irrevocable waivers then any team can claim them and their contract. The link explains revocable waivers. I hope this explains it.

Placing Dunn on waivers now is just saying to the other teams in the league "Any interest in trading for Dunn, speak now or forever hold your peace." Even if some other team does signal interest by putting in a claim, it's still very unlikely they would meet Rizzo's high asking price, which surely hasn't lowered since last week. If some team does meet his price, then they'll do a trade. Otherwise, this is the last piece of due diligence Rizzo has to take care of before signing him to an extension.

Aren't teams allowed to place as many as 10 players per day on waivers?

Heck, some teams will place everyone on their 40-Man Roster on waivers over the course of a few days. It's no big deal, and most of the waivers are revocable, so if, in the case of Dunn, whoever puts in a claim doesn't meet Rizzo's high demands, he simply gets pulled back off waivers.

How did they get Pudge's homerun ball back?

How long is Wilson Ramos under club control? Does anyone know his contract/Rule 5 status?

Any player on the 40-man roster is not eligible for the post-season, Rule 5 draft. Ramos has served about 30 days of major league service and is under club control until he reaches six full years.

About Pudge, he may lobby to play on another team next year to ensure he gets enough at-bats to reach 3000.
