Morse to DL, Bernadina up

NEW YORK -- The Nationals placed Mike Morse on the 15-day disabled list this morning and recalled Roger Bernadina from Class AAA Syracuse to take his roster spot.

Morse has been hampered by a strained calf muscle for several days, and though he said he's feeling better, the club needed to add another healthy body to its bench with third baseman Ryan Zimmerman hampered by a tight hamstring.

Zimmerman is not in today's lineup. Adam Kennedy is starting third base, with Cristian Guzman at second base.

More to come...

Here's a full recap of all today's roster moves on CSNwashington.com.

The Nats' bench, stretching into the minors, seems to compete well with the benches of other clubs. I guess Rizzo deserves some credit there!

I guess we can take some comfort that it wasn't R Zim on the DL (at least not yet). Please don'tet Riggleman use the words "day-to-day"!

Zimm by all accounts was a monster off season with hsi PT. Mark, any word on if the Nats have upgraded PT and if there is really any empahsis on injury prevention (like stretching after light warm up, then more stretching)

Z-uck should start a Z-im pool: When does he go on the DL? Zim, not Zuck. Mark is indestructible and can also play hurt.

Nice to get this news before even the Nats' web site put it up.

The Zuck-man rocks! But we already knew that. :-)

Here's hoping Livo can go at least 6IP today - the LR/MR situation still makes me nervous.

Bernadina was hitting the cover off the ball in Syracuse. Hitting well over .400. Unlike Maxwell. Extra base hits include a triple and a home run. Since Morse was almost more of an infielder/left fielder at this point you have to wonder about the right field situation. Do you add Bernadina to the mix? With Tavares and Harris? Or is Harris now going back to super utility man? With just Bernadina and Tavares in right?

If Livo doesn't go 6 with a quality start the right guy to bring back would really be JD Martin, NOT Olsen. Olsen is not pitching well. JD Martin did complete a quality start and once again has the lowest ERA and WHIP for starters on the Syracuse staff. JD Martin has also been hitting the cover off the ball in the early going and was even used as a pinch hitter yesterday.

Aeoliano-

Livan isn't going anywhere for a while.

And Maxwell had 3 hits yesterday (2 extra base ones).

and if zimmerman misses a few days, you'll see a lot of willie harris at 3B, leaving RF for taveras and (perhaps) bernadina.

DJ Maxwell finally got some hits ... they were his FIRST of the year. And that was yesterday. He is hitting all of .250. Now, back to hist slump. Bernadina was hitting .545 going in to yesterday's game. If they really felt that Maxwell was hitting, given all the regard that Riggleman has for him, don't you think they would have recalled him instead of Bernadina?

DJ if Livo gets blown out by the Mets. I think you might see JD Martin replacing him on the roster.

Watching Clippard pitch yesterday ... seven strikeouts in 3 innings. One has to wonder how in heck Miguel Batista made this roster as a non-roster spring training invitee.

So Bernadina's getting called up for a bit? Good for him. I guess we'll see if he feeds all us trolls who thought he should have been there from day one ;)

Looking over the Syracuse roster (http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ros&cid=552) it shows Bernadina's status as "Bereavement." Anyone know anything about that?
