Game 118: Giants at Nats

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
As noted earlier today, Bryce Harper is really struggling to hit left-handers this season. Despite a .303 batting average and 1.008 OPS against righties, the Nationals' left fielder is hitting a paltry .172 with a .546 OPS against southpaws. Harper is also dealing with some flu-like symptoms, according to Davey Johnson, enough for the young outfielder to get a day off.

The Nationals' two other left-handed-hitting regulars — Denard Span and Adam LaRoche — also have struggled to hit lefties this season, but each will get a chance to start tonight. Not that Davey has many other options to replace those two, especially with Scott Hairston already starting in Harper's place in left field.

Gio Gonzalez gets the start for the Nationals, and it's only appropriate since today is National Left-Handers' Day. Sense a recurring theme here?

Updates to come, so please check back...

5:15 p.m. — Turns out Harper isn't in the lineup tonight because he's been dealing with the flu, according to Davey Johnson, who said he otherwise would have started Bryce against Bumgarner. For what it's worth, Harper did just take BP with Ryan Zimmerman, Adam LaRoche and Jayson Werth. So perhaps he's trying to talk his way into the lineup. Stay tuned.

7:06 p.m. — And we're underway. Bryce Harper did NOT talk his way into the lineup, so it's Scott Hairston in left field as Gio Gonzalez fires ball one to Andres Torres.

7:15 p.m. — A little bit of a ragged top of the first for Gio, who allowed a one-out bloop double to Joaquin Arias and then walked Brandon Belt. The lefty looked like he was going to get out of the jam when Buster Posey hit a chopper to the right side of the infield. But Gonzalez was way late covering first base, so the Nats couldn't turn an inning-ending, 3-6-1 double play. That would've proved costly, but he battled back to get Hunter Pence to ground out and end the inning without anybody scoring.

7:29 p.m. — And the Nats waste a one-out double by Anthony Rendon, leaving them 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position already tonight. Meanwhile, in between innings, the Giants' CSN Bay Area broadcast showed Jayson Werth and Gio Gonzalez in a heated argument in the dugout, likely over Gio's not covering first base in the top of the first. Steve McCatty and Rick Schu had to step in and separate the two. Stay tuned on this one.

7:45 p.m. — Meanwhile, this game is scoreless through two innings. Gonzalez has retired five in a row since the Belt walk in the top of the first. Bumgarner has also retired five in a row since the Rendon double.

7:53 p.m. — The wackiness continues in the top of the third. After walking Bumgarner on four pitches to begin the inning, Gonzalez then fired a pitch to the backstop. Bumgarner took off for second base, though he started coasting when he assumed he was going to be safe. Just one problem: Wilson Ramos got the ball and fired it to second base (nearly taking off Gio's head along the way) and nailed Bumgarner for the out. Bizarre. Gonzalez, meanwhile, seems to be dealing with some issues with his back, perhaps explaining why he wasn't hustling to cover first base earlier. After all that, it's still 0-0 heading to the bottom of the third.

8:08 p.m. — A chance for the Nats in the bottom of the third, with two on and one out for Rendon, but the rookie struck out looking at a fastball right down the pipe. Zimmerman then drew a walk, loading the bases for Werth, but the team's hottest hitter also struck out, leaving the Nats 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position through three scoreless innings.

8:18 p.m. — Gio has been pitching in trouble all night, but so far he's escaped without any damage. He stranded two more baserunners in the top of the fourth. The Giants are 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. This feels like the kind of game where one clutch hit will prove the difference. Then again, there's also an intense storm cell about to hit the area, so we could be looking at a delay (and then maybe a lot of bullpen arms the rest of the way).

8:28 p.m. — And the Nats take a 1-0 lead, thanks to Desmond's 50th extra-base hit of the year (a double), LaRoche's single and Ramos' hard shot off Bumgarner's leg. They're still only 1-for-8 with RISP, but they've got the lead, and now the rain and wind has arrived. It's pretty intense, but hopefully won't last too long.

9:21 p.m. — The rain has eased up, the tarp is being rolled up and we'll have baseball resuming at 9:45 p.m.

9:35 p.m. — Tanner Roark is warming in the Nats pen, so he'll take over the game from here. Gio Gonzalez's final line will be: 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K. He won't be eligible for the win, because he didn't go the minimum five innings.

9:45 p.m. — And we are back underway, with Roark on the mound and Kurt Suzuki now behind the plate in place of Ramos. Not sure what that's about.

9:57 p.m. — Uh-oh, this game is tied after Desmond lets an easy grounder from Posey roll right under his glove, bringing home a runner from third. Looked like Ian might have picked his head up too soon, looking to make the throw before he ever had the ball. Either way, it's now a 1-1 game thanks to the unearned run against Roark.

10:23 p.m. — And this game continues to slog along. Some of that is due to Guillermo Moscoso, which is apparently Spanish for "takes 45 seconds between every pitch." Seriously, Guillermo: Pick up the pace. Then again, he got the results he wanted in the bottom of the fifth, pitching around two leadoff walks to get out of the inning. Roark made it through the top of the sixth unscathed, so it remains 1-1.

10:35 p.m. — Adam LaRoche to the rescue. He clobbered a fastball right down Broadway from Moscoso off the facade of the second deck in right field for his 17th homer of the season. This one came right after Desmond singled, so the Nats take a 3-1 lead after six. That puts Roark in line for his second win in four days, if the rest of the bullpen can hold this two-run lead. It'll be Fernando Abad for the top of the seventh.

10:54 p.m. — Boy, Ryan Mattheus really hasn't been very good since returning from his self-inflicted broken hand. He just entered with two outs in the top of the seventh, a man on first, specifically to face the right-handed Posey and Pence. And he walked Posey on four pitches, then gave up an RBI single to Pence. Not good. To his credit, Mattheus did get Sandoval to fly out, so the Nats still lead 3-2 at the stretch. But it's really become a challenge for Davey to get through the seventh inning of games.

11:05 p.m. — Zimmerman has now grounded into two double plays tonight and 15 for the season, seventh-most in the NL. Still 3-2 as Tyler Clippard enters for the eighth.

11:15 p.m. — It wasn't pretty but Clippard got through the eighth. He put two men on with one out but battled to get two outs and preserve the 3-2 lead. Onto the bottom of the eighth.

11:35 p.m. — The Nats get a big insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, with Werth doubling and eventually scoring on Suzuki's sac fly to right. So it's a 4-2 lead for Rafael Soriano, who now takes the mound for the ninth.

11:43 p.m. — It's over. Nats win 4-2. It's their fourth straight, and it leaves them 2 games under .500.

Huh. I did not know this. Maybe I can talk my husband into buying me dinner or something. Eh, probably not. Do they have greeting cards for the occasion? No? Oh, well. We get no respect.

Go, GIO!! Go, NATS!!

(My old friend in the SFO Bay Area emailed to ask which team I'd be rooting for this series. Well, duh. I told her we'd cancel each other out, though. :-))

Looking forward to that late inning PH appearance for Harp.

Looks from the lineups of both clubs that tongihts game might go FAST. Lots of strong LHP not so much obvious strong hitting. We'll see how it plays out.

Harper's struggles againt LHP are legit, the kid's talent is amazing but his approach at the plate, not so much. He's closed, the bat coked too hard (he looks cool, but that's not the goal) and he seems pull-happy. He's in trouble in a big way against any decent soft stuff inside from a leftie and the league knows it. I wish he'd adjust to a more neutral stance, trust his natural power to all fields and not try to yank everything to right.

And on International Left Hander's Day, too.

You'd think he'd grant an exception.

Of course, we're all in our right minds, so it's all good.

Benching Harper tells me that the team hasn't given up on the 2013 season yet. If they had they'd want to give Harper as many at-bats against lefties as possible to try to address the problem for 2014 and beyond. Instead it looks like they're trying to keep the win streak going by getting Hairston in there against the lefty and saving Harper for pinch-hit appearances against someone like Sergio Romo.

David Proctor said...

I posted it in one of the other threads yesterday, but here's a good article on Harper's struggle against lefties by Fangraphs:

What's with all the sickness going around our clubhouse this year?

Perhaps because the flu is contagious?

David Proctor said...

Lol Feel, obviously I know that. But it's been at different times throughout the year. If they came down with it around the same time (like Span and Harper did earlier this season), it'd be one thing. It's odd how all these separate instances keep popping up.

Section 222 said...

Harper's slump last year started after the ASG. His lowest BA of the year, .245, was after the game on August 15. In the 31 games between July 13 and August 15, in which the Nats went 21-11 by the way, Harper's slashline was .171/.257/.244. In the 44 remaining games after that, he batted .327/.384/.660.

So here's hoping for another late August Harper surge.

"What's with all the sickness going around our clubhouse this year?"

I had that thought too! But I think we forget that it's a long season, and that when they go to work they don't just sit at a desk and stare at a computer. Getting sick enough that affects your ability to stay focused on the game for 3 hours seems like it would be pretty common.

IIRC we've had a couple guys miss games against us for the same reason. Pick a player and google it, there's a good chance he's missed a game due to illness over the last couple years.

IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA

Onion, Zim, and the Beast hit dingers off him, we were 3-10 with RISP (whole game), with one SB (Espi) and one CS (Desi) vs. Bumgarner.

Won 9-4 even with EJax giving up 3 in the first.

It's not the flu- the flu is a very specific illness that has nothing to do with your stomach. Google it. It's a stomach virus, which is very contagious. Wash your hands Bryce. A lot. I am finding it amusing that the Mets are already getting hammered about Harvey reaching his innings limit and being shut down. Might cost him a Cy Young. Let the hysteria ensue-- again. Sigh.

NatsLady said...

According to my records, Harper had the flu in April, when Span also had it. LaRoche had it in mid-July.

baseballswami said...

Irregular eating habits, travel, close quarters, hear, getting physically run down. Betting others have had milder versions along the way. Probably quite common to have stomach issues during the season. Bryce seems to be getting it more often. He needs a mom.

baseballswami said...

That would be--- HEAT.

Did Matt Harvey have Tommy John surgery?

David Proctor said...

Nope. They just don't want to up his innings by more than 30% from last year because of his age.

baseballswami said...

No- just very young and has not built up his innings yet. I think 160 last year, won't go over 200 this year. Even without TJ, they ramp up the young guys over a couple of seasons. Usually in the minors where no one notices, though.

baseballswami said...

Last year the Barves put Medlen in the bullpen for part of the year to stretch out his innings. Fine for the national media to freak out- they aren't the ones paying for those valuable young arms.

Get Your Re(n)d On said...

I think Medlen had TJ. There is a difference when it's a doctor recommending an innings limit and not Tom Verducci. The media needs to figure that out.

David, of course it does. Stras pitched less than 169 innings last year, is only one year older than Harvey, and has had TJ surgery. So why does it make sense for the Mets to shut down Harvey at 200 and not for the Nats to shut down Stras at the same or similar point?

Werth's career numbers with the bases loaded are really bad. He's only hitting like .230. It's odd because his numbers with RISP aren't bad and his overall numbers are obviously not bad. He must be changing something with the bases loaded.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Sandrabol hits a weak one snd doesnt get touched. Luck?

David Proctor said...

That's the problem with pitch to contact, MNF. It allows for those weakly hit balls to find holes and for defensive mistakes like Desi's. You need pitchers, ESPECIALLY relievers, to strike guys out.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Sandy Rosario too happy. Lets wipe that smile off once on the mound.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Potomac Nats need someone with Math skills. Half waytoSt. Patrick''s day is Sept 17 not August 16.

Aries 4 for 4. Wasnt in original line up.

David Proctor said...

Abad just threw 98?!

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

And post of the night goes to Mark Meister for this gem:

10:23 p.m. — And this game continues to slog along. Some of that is due to Guillermo Moscoso, which is apparently Spanish for "takes 45 seconds between every pitch."

Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Abad way to gelt Belt.

Now Mattheus do your job.

David Proctor said...

I thought it was a good way to get Belt, MNF!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Remember Jesus Colome who pitch for Nats 2007,8 an 10?

He was a minute a pitch pitcher

David Proctor said...

4 pitch walk.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Come on Mattheus pitch like you know what your doing.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

You walk the runner into scoring position then fall behind the next guy.

Anyone have his stats on giving up inherited runners. Since he came back, i have been totally unimpressed

Less Platu said...

I see some of our posters were ragging on Werth .. are you frikking kidding me? This gives Legion of Doom a whole new meaning Jayson Werth has virtually carried this hapless team for a month! One 'off' game and you rag him? haha Unbelievable how miserable people can get.

David Proctor said...

We need to add a run or two. Clip has been solo HR happy lately. And you never know what you'll get from Untuck.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I am just going by memory, but it seems the 7th inning is the inning our bullpen has been the weakest all season.

David Proctor said...

Who was ragging on Werth? I mentioned he was having a bad game and has poor numbers with the bases loaded, but that wasn't ragging on him at all. He's been outstanding. He can't hit .500 forever.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Add on runs Nats.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I think in a one run game he plays tougher.

Less Platu said...

Geez Proctor -- You immediately think this was about you? it wasn't -- read back yourself -- its not hard -- and you'll see at least two Legion of Doomers ragging on Werth. So, its not all about you, sorry to break the news to you

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

If you are referring to my comment of 0 for 3 RISP tonight. I didnt complain, just stated the facts.

In fact didnt read any complaints all just comments.

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

Cubs have tied up Reds. Cards are losing. 'Zona losing early to Bal-mer.

We could pick up a game on all 3 of those wild card wanna-bes.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Since he and I were the only I saw. Neither was a legion of doom comment at all. Just statements.

Less Platu said...

Not a more negative character here than you Manassas. It's really annoying - why do you even bother if you're so miserable. Get a beer -- go out -- be happy

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

@Manassas: I surely do remember "Every day" Jesus Colome!! Didn't we all pray for Colome's buttocks, as per Jimbo's instructions?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Guy sleeping behind the plate front row.

Damn it I will stay awake sitting there.

David Proctor said...

Would it be a knee-jerk reaction to say Rendon is back? Because he's looked way better lately.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I just remember thinking Chinese resterants.

One from Colome and one from column b.

baseballswami said...

I think I may spend the top of the ninth cowering under my couch. Having to remind myself to breathe.

Less Platu said...

Reading back I see Proctor did indeed talk major trash about Werth. What a Loser. Ragging on our best hitter, our best player, the player who just got named National League Player of the month! He carried this loser team. And you rag on his numbers. What a bunch of no count Losers. Seriously, you all are. Why don't you just leave -- and take your Legion of Doom with you

Less Platu said...

Cant fault Zimm -- ball couldn't have been hit harder.

David Proctor said...

Zim has had the worst luck today.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Damn it Zim, quit hitting the ball on the ground.

I tell you I still cant believe heis srill third on tge team in double plays.

I know in the last month he must be leading.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

The first one might be bad luck, but that one he hit right into the ground. That is not bad luck. It not squaring on the ball to elevate it.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

He hit the top of the ball, which is the recipe for a grounder.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Was hoping Clippard would have a clean inning.

Crawford center cut that ball well.

Less Platu said...

clip just got squeezed

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Good effort zim, better than the hitting efforts.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Come on clippard.

Less Platu said...

trust the heater, clip

David Proctor said...

Our bullpen is really making this difficult tonight...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Seen this already. Give up a hit tgen a walk.

Come on reluevers this is not smart baseball.

Less Platu said...

There are two Clippard: the one that trust his fastball and dominates; and the one that throws too many changes and get rocked.

Less Platu said...

One more, Clip --

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Alr you got to get the out at second.

Arias up again.

David Proctor said...

I don't think they get 2 either way right there, but they keep the lead run off of second if LaRoche can get it out of his glove.

And Clip gets out of it.

Whew.
