Game 115: Phillies at Nats

Tonight the Nationals take on the Philadelphia Phillies to kick off a weekend series, and on the mound will be a familiar face. John Lannan makes his return to Nationals Park, pitching in Washington for the first time since signing a free agent deal with the NL East rivals over the offseason.

Lannan is 3-4 this year with a 4.10 ERA, he's starting to even out to his career averages after starting the season off poorly and dealing with several stints on the disabled list. He's actually facing the Nats for the third time already this season in just his 13th outing of the year. He shut out the Nationals through eight innings in a Phillies' win on July 8 and allowed two runs through five on June 17.

Starting for Washington is Dan Haren who was placed on waivers recently, but remains with the team. The 32-year-old is 5-11 this season with a 5.14 ERA.

Stay tuned for updates throughout the game...

7:04 p.m. -- Chase here providing updates tonight, Mark is here to provide postgame coverage. D.C. Washington just nailed the anthem and the first pitch is just moments away. Stay tuned.

7:14 p.m. -- Haren got started with a 1-2-3 frame in the first, striking out Rollins and getting Young and Utley to fly out to center field. He needed 16 pitches (nine strikes).

7:30 p.m. -- The Nationals just did a very 2013 Nationals thing in the first inning. Walks by Zimmerman, Werth, and an infield hit by Desmond loaded the bases with two outs. LaRoche then went down swinging to end the inning. Chances squandered once again. Lannan needed 25 pitches (11 strikes).

7:35 p.m. -- Another crisp inning for Haren who has retired the first six batters in order. Brown, Ruf and Asche all hit balls in play for outs. Haren has thrown 24 pitches.

7:46 p.m. -- The Nats just got the best of old friend John Lannan with two home runs in the second inning. Rendon hit a two-run homer to right-center field to score Ramos, and Zimmerman then added a solo shot to the Red Porch in left-center.

7:52 p.m. -- Haren gave up a baserunner in the third after hitting Ruiz with a pitch to the elbow. Martinez then lined into a double play, right to LaRoche who tagged first. And Lannan promptly struck out to end the frame. Haren has 34 pitches so far.

8:02 p.m. -- The Nats pushed another run across in the bottom of the third. Desmond reached on a double and then came home on a flyball by LaRoche to center field. Martinez made a diving attempt at the ball, but couldn't reel it in and the Nats are now up 4-0.

8:11 p.m. -- Haren's no-hit bid and shutout ended in the top of the fourth. Young doubled and was then singled home by Utley. 4-1 is the Nationals' lead now.

8:17 p.m. -- No trouble for Lannan in the fourth inning, setting down Haren, Harper and Zimmerman in order. Zim flew out to right field to end the frame as we now move to the fifth.

8:23 p.m. -- Haren got through the fifth with three quick outs, including strikeouts of Asche and Martinez. He's put in a solid five innings so far with just two hits and one earned run allowed, needing 61 pitches.

8:37 p.m. -- The Nationals' lead is now seven as Lannan coughs up four more runs to make it an 8-1 game. Werth walked to lead off and was brought home two batters later on a Ramos' double. Rendon was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Haren was then actually walked to score the second run. A Span single brought home two more and the Nats are well on their way to a win here.

8:44 p.m. -- Another quick inning for Haren who set the Phillies down in order. He is now through six with only two hits allowed.

9:02 p.m. -- Haren allowed a second run to the Phillies in the top of the seventh. Utley led off with a double and was joined on base by Brown who singled to move him to third. Then, with one out Asche grounded to Rendon at second who made a fantastic diving grab to keep the ball in the infield. He flipped the ball to second to get Brown out, but it wasn't in time to give Desmond a chance at the double play. Utley scored and it's now 8-2.

9:13 p.m. -- Three up, three down for the Nats in the bottom of the seventh as Ryan Mattheus will now take the mound with a 8-2 lead.

9:31 p.m. -- The Nats put another run on the board in the bottom of the seventh on a Harper single to right field to score Scott Hairston who led off the inning with a double. It's now a 9-2 game with Ian Krol taking the mound to put this one on ice.

9:38 p.m. -- Krol shuts the door and the Nats win 9-2, they are now 55-60 on the season.

lol, it would be amusing if someone claimed Dan Haren to block a trade, then the nats let them have him...

Span leading off even against the lefty. Tracy playing 1B. Lannan wasn't scratched, was he,?

Steady Eddie said...

I was hoping they'd DFATracy and bring back TMo to start for ALR at first, especially against lefties.

NatsLady said...

Eddie, I thought maybe they would when Tyler Moore didn't play the second game of the double-header last night. Maybe he had trouble getting here.

LaRoche is starting. Some sort of miscommunication.

Anonymous said...

I looked at the line-up. We have two automatic outs in span and tracy. I exclude Haren because he is a better hitter than either of these two.

From Span I expect weak pop ups to left field or weak grounders to the right side. Fram tracy some fly outs and one double play.

This team is bad. They can't hit, execute plays, field and their pitching, aside from the starters, ranks in the bottom of the league. Wise of the Post threw out some core stats. This team ranks in the bottom of the league. The fact that some players even talk of a WC is ludicrous. I would not be surprised if we get passed by the Mets and Phillies.

It takes a special brand of negativity to complain about a player being in the lineup immediately underneath a post telling you he's not in the lineup.

NatsJack @ 4:10 p.m.,

Well said. Some folks love hyperbole ('never' or 'always' or 'automatic') and others have very selective memories (or non-memories, as the case may be). And when you call them on it, they often change the terms or even the subject. This team is having plenty of problems -- enough of them that there's little need to exaggerate or otherwise leave the realms of reality. Let's stick to facts (or opinions based on facts), please.

So, over/under on Lannan giving up two earned runs tonight. I'm going to wimp out and say "push."

bb, in m's defense, the timing of his post indicates that he almost certainly hadn't read your post about ALR being in the lineup before he posted his comments. Perhaps a new category of owed drinks should be created for such situations. :-)

Bowden: It takes a special type to refuse to acknowledge what is obvious to virtually everyone who follows this team. I am not being negative just realistic. And mister jack watch for the pop out or weak grounder to the right side. I am tired of Span's ineptitude. It was bad trade. You are not to win with this guy.

Of course, Lannan's stats are only "Lannan normalized" this year because (a) he hasn't had to face the Phillies this year; and (b) he's pitched twice against the Nationals, who can't hit a LHP to save their baseball lives.

Lannan has allowed 31 ER in 68 IP, for a 4.10 ERA. Normal Lannan, right? Well, against the Nationals he has pitched 13 innings in 2 starts, allowing just 10H, 8 K's, 3BB, and only 2 runs, both earned. Against the Nats he's great, with a WHIP of 1.0 and a K/BB of 2.7/1 and an ERA of 1.38. WOW!

Against non-Nationals teams, Lannan has 55IP, 63H, 26K, 16BB, 33R, 29ER. His WHIP is 1.436, his K/BB is 1.6 and his ERA is 4.74. Blech.

Before you start pining for Lannan on the Nationals, remember that the Lannan you would get would not be able to pitch against the Nats' LHP pathetic lineup.

The Wrong Way Franchise.

1. dump your best hitter for two single A pitchers

2. get a leadoff guy who can't bunt, hit or steal bases -- (reeeeeeaaaal smart)

3. Pitch Haren when he was not allright. Then Put him on Waivers when he is allright. hahaha

4. Keep an old manager who goes catatonic during games -- cant handle a pithing staff, doesn't understand small ball and on and on and on

5. extend the contract of a GM who totally gave away a winning hand -- dumb

6. Keep a third baseman who destroys the defense and is only getting worse. Smart

7. Keep a Chd Tracy and Bernadina who aren't hitting the Mendoza line -- brilliant

8. Refuse to play a Lombardoza who just produces produces and produces

9. Begin the season with no lefties in the pen -- oh, excuse me, they did call Duke a pitcher, didn't they.

10. Go over 1000 ab's with a 2b who hit .150 and led the Majors in K's

Brilliant Rizzo and Davey, simply brilliant

I PITY THE NATIONALS.

John C. said...

Steve J, you are a troll - mostly just throwing insults against the wall to provoke a reaction. Even the criticisms you show that you haven't been paying attention. No GM has a perfect record, but Rizzo has built the team up from nothing. They ABSOLUTELY have work to do, but a lot of work has been done already. The team at the major league level is still young and growing, the minor league system has been helping out, and there is more on the way.

Just to take one example, Michael Morse wasn't the best hitter on last year's team. His OPS+ (113) was behind LaRoche, Desmond, Werth, Zimmerman, Harper ... and Tyler Moore. Morse didn't exactly strike fear in the Cardinals, OPSing .684 in the NLDS. For one year of an off-injured slugger who didn't have a position to play and (btw) has been injured most of this year, Rizzo got a top 100 prospect in A.J. Cole, a LHRP who has already made the big leagues and a 23yo pitcher (Blake Treinan) who is doing well in AA. All three are under team control for years. That's a great trade if you're paying attention.

Assuming you know the team's future because of this season is just as simplistic and foolish as assuming that you could know the team's future based on last season.

Go back to sleep, troll.

Just wonderin' said...

Desmond and Tyler Clippard have been the most engaging of all the Nats I've met."

I had the opportunity to sit next to Tyler Clippard 2 years ago at the Dream Foundation dinner and he was fun to talk to.

Jack, I wish you made it yesterday. I spent 2 hours rolling ground balls to Ian Desmond and Anthony Rendon at the Gio Foundation Camp I was running. We didn't have a lot of time to talk but I had 2 hours to observe what these 2 men are.

I'm blown away by the type of persons both these young men are but Ian Desmond is part angel. Many of the kids at the camp were physically handicapped. One young boy couldn't catch a ball so Ian got behind him on his knees and placed his hands on the boys wrists to move his hands. I underhand tossed a ball to the boy and Desi helped him catch the ball. The kid was beaming from ear to ear.

As the groups rotated to the other fields to work outfield with Denard Span or pitching with Gio, Ian took another boy into the outfield to work on throwing with a boy who never played baseball and never owned a glove. Desi gave him his glove.

"Spread The Glove" A day I will never forget.

You have to enjoy the stubbornness of the pro-Denard Span people. He will have to basically be the worst hitting center fielder in baseball before they will give up.

I will say that the Rick Ankiel comparisons have done a lot to destroy all of the pro-Span arguments. If anything, Ankiel was a better fielder than Span and there wasn't a peep when he was DFAed, the same as will be true with Span....
