Game 111: Nats at Brewers

In a season where the Nats have hovered consistently around the .500 mark, there have been many ups and downs. But for some reason, lately it seems the peaks and valleys have been more extreme. They win three straight, then they lose two at Detroit and panic ensues. Now the Nats are back to winning with two consecutive victories out in Milwaukee and a chance for a sweep on Sunday.

Today the Nats will trot out RHP Taylor Jordan (1-3, 3.31 ERA) who is coming off his first major league win, a dominant start against the Mets in which he allowed just one run over six innings of work. Jordan is making just his seventh major league start, but his second against the Brewers. The rookie threw 5 2/3 innings with two runs allowed in a Nats' win on July 4.

Pitching for the Brew Crew is veteran right-hander Kyle Lohse. Signed late in the offseason as a free agent, Lohse has pulled together a pretty nice year for Milwaukee. Through 134 1/3 innings in 2013 he boasts a 3.22 ERA and a 7-7 record. In an overall struggling staff this year, Lohse has been Milwaukee's best starter. He pitched eight innings with just one earned run against the Nats on July 3.

Enjoy the game...

Jus' wonderin' in which of Davey's chapter in the book on sabermetrics does a struggling hitter like ALR continue to hit in the heart of the order?

Seems like a Buffalo would feed better there!

Depot Master said...

Also wondering why Rendon is getting so much time off and low in the order. Has the league caught up with him?

Joe Seamhead said...

Nats killer Rickie Weeks not in the line up.

Joe Seamhead said...

Depot, Since July 1, Anthony has gone 19-99 for a .198 BA Whether it's a slump, bad luck, the league has adjusted, worn down from playing in so many games for the first time, or a combo of all 4, he hasn't produced as he did in June. I think he'll be fine, but a day off might do him good.

Doc said...

The league did adjust to ARen. But he's adjusted back, with a new batting stance that allows him to get at the inside pitches that opposing pitchers started throwing him.

Davey said when ARen came back up, that because of his positon in the box, pitchers would start throwing him inside. He was hitting the inside pitches with more authority yesterday.

Thinking that ARen's BA will start going back up now.

GoooooooTony! GooooooooooooooooooNats!!!!

At least Rendon puts the ball in play and makes productive outs unlike our previous 2b, King Whifalot.

sjm308 said...

I have not read comments from the other posts today. It is telling to me that they did not bring Storen right back up with Ross O. going down. I actually like this in that the lefty can give the Braves some difficulty. I don't read alot into era for relievers but at AAA not many people were getting hits off him and his era was 1.8 or something.

Will they skip Taylor after this start with the Thursday off date? I am thinking that is wise.

Go Nats

Joe Seamhead said...

Last night the idea of Span leading off was discussed again. I feel that with Rendon struggling, especially when he's batting second, Davey's going with Span at the top and moving Rendon down is justified. Though the results weren't good last night for Span, Rendon had one of his better games in the past few weeks hitting lower in the order. Span needs to do offensively what he was brought here to do, and that's to get on base by hook, or crook. It's interesting that Simmons, the Braves lead off hitter most of the year. has much worse stats than Span, but they have gotten much more timely hits than we have and have been able to overcome Simmons' poor stats.

Faraz Shaikh said...

Watching BAL vs SEA, how much catcher standing up right after catching a strike (to check a runner or throw someone out) affect whether umpire calls it a strike or not?

NatsLady said...

Been without internet (and on telephone) for hours... just catching up...

Bad news about Ohlendorf.

Not only did Storen not come up, but he didn't pitch yesterday in a 12-inning game for Syracuse (after a not-great appearance the day before--two singles and a fielding error). I think they are being very careful with him to straighten out whatever are his problems. I wouldn't be surprised if he has some minor injury also.

sjm308 said...

Thanks NL

Joe Seamhead said...

Understandably, Bryce is still very worried by the wall.

NatsJack in Florida said...

Bryce is definitely a catcher still learning how to play the outfield.

Holden Baroque said...

Peter Capaldi is the next Doctor.

Joe Seamhead said...

OK, this is getting absurd.

Joe Seamhead said...

Great AB, Suzuki!

Nats 128 said...

i was thinking Ramos hits a grand slammer on that fastball down the middle on 2-0 and in the 2 strike count a nice swing from Suzuki that I haven't seen since April. Nice job Curt.

Joe Seamhead said...

OK, that play by Desmond was unbelievable.
Weird play in the corner with Harper.

David Proctor said...

That Harper play should've been a ground rule double and if it were ruled that way, the run would not have scored.

NatsLady said...

OK, so a three-year deal for Lohse was the alternative to a one-year deal for Haren. (Or keeping E-Jax, or Rizzo being absolutely psychic on Liriano.)

NatsLady said...

So---> not an infield fly?

David Proctor said...

When you're going well, those are the balls that drop...

Joe Seamhead said...

Well, Lojse does have one more win than Haren, NatsLady.LOL!

sjm308 said...

LaRoche not helping there.

Joe Seamhead said...

An INFIELD FLY is a fair fly ball (not including a line drive nor an attempted bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, when first and second, or first, second and third bases are occupied, before two are out. The pitcher, catcher and any outfielder who stations himself in the infield on the play shall be considered infielders for the purpose of this rule.

NatsJack in Florida said...

Only one man on, NatsLady.

David Proctor said...

Desmond hits into more double plays than he should.

NatsJack in Florida said...

Desmond is making a habit of hitting in to tailor made double plays.

NatsLady said...

Seamhead, I was joking...!

David Proctor said...

That was an exact replica of the play where Harper threw Betancourt out yesterday. Their LF can't do what Harper can do.

David Proctor said...

Span suddenly can't buy a hit anymore now that he's back in the leadoff spot.

Joe Seamhead said...

Suffering from leavemonitis again.

Nats 128 said...

Nats blow opportunitys in 2 innings in a row.

Joe Seamhead said...

David, Off the bat I thought that last one was going to be a hit.

David Proctor said...

I love when FP gets snarky.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Harper leading off and Span 7th seems the best results.

Nats 128 said...

Span in leadoff all messed up;

NatsJack in Florida said...

Just saw that Ryan Zimmerman commercial on not being a rah rah guy. Give me Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper every time.

Joe Seamhead said...

Another inning ending DP! We're going to regret these.

Faraz Shaikh said...

Bob C just cursed this game.

NatsJack in Florida said...

Sometimes Bob and FP just don't know when to shut up.

Nats 128 said...

Natsjack, Ryah leads by example and I hope that example isnt his fielding.

NatsLady said...

Need to win this game. Cincy losing big, Arizona losing 4-0. Hope it's okay with NatsJack I'm looking at the standings now that it's August. :)

Nats 128 said...

Whats going on with Taylor Jordan today. 94 heater on his 70th pitch.

NatsJack in Florida said...

NL..I understand. I told Gator John that I'm going to wait till the Nats are 3 games over.500 before I assess the situation.

Nats 128 said...

LaRoche!

NatsLady said...

Whose bat did LaRoche use???? Werth's again?

NatsJack in Florida said...

I've been telling people about Taylor Jordan since Spring Training. I'm not surprised.

But I am surprised by LaRoche!

Steady Eddie said...

AdamPower is back!

David Proctor said...

Werth's bat has magic powers.

Joe Seamhead said...

Super balls, I tell you. It's stuffed with super balls!

NatsLady said...

Put the odds in my blog post. Still looks like it will need 89-90 wins to get a WC spot. You have to hope that STL and PIT take the Central and one WC, and then it's up to us. (I'm not giving up hope on the Division, but trying to be "realistically" hopeful.)

David Proctor said...

Jordan's slider has been pretty bad today. In the offseason, if he works on that, he's going to be a weapon next year. He's thrown really good ones before, like FP said, in his last start he had a great one. Just get more consistent with it.

David Proctor said...

Uh oh

NatsLady said...

Taylor looks a little tired. Let's see if he can reach back.

NatsLady said...

Not good. Jordan is winded and tired. Davey, don't blow this!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

What is Davey waiting for?

NatsJack in Florida said...

This is a great test.

NatsJack in Florida said...

OK. Now it's time to see if Abad can handle it.

Joe Seamhead said...

I just hope that the GIDP's don't come back to bite us in the tookus.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Had Zim stayed back looked like a podsible GIDP

NatsLady said...

Sh******!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Abad is worthless today.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Davey waited until Hordan loaded the bases before he did anythibg, but Abad has been totalky not invokved as these guys are bouncibg balls just out of the fielder's reach.

David Proctor said...

Wow

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Why was infield in?

In the 6th inning that is a terrible decision.

Unknown said...

the wheels have come off.

SCNatsFan said...

Abad had his cup of coffee. Send him back.

And why is Suzuki so far in front of home.

David Proctor said...

According to the beat reporters on twitter, the ball down the line that Davey argued about was foul. That's a big call for an umpire to blow

Faraz Shaikh said...

if we lose, I blame Carp for this game.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

This inning has had a lot of bad decision on the fielders being in wrong spot, and the pitchers hitting the wrong spots.

NatsJack in Florida said...

Why was Suzuki 5 feet in front of the plate on the throw from Rendon?

NatsLady said...

Can't believe Suzuki couldn't get that out at home, but I'm no judge of the throw, didn't see a good angle of it.

Nats 128 said...

SC, wondering the same thing with Suzuki. should have been out.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Yi have sound down with company here what Carp say.

Unknown said...

nice catch Rendon, that is a tough play now come up and hit a HR.

NatsLady said...

All right, guys. Back to work. Let's show we got "heart" and get this one.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Suzuki could never get the out where he was standing.

At least 4 plays tge fielders were in the wrong place.

Zim ALR, then the whole infield, then Suzuki.

Joe Seamhead said...

I don't blame Johnson for this mess. Abad is supposed to be able to get LH batters out.
Great catch by Rendon! His throw home earlier in the inning was to far towards the first base side for Zook to have any chance to make the tag however.

Unknown said...

haha, he heard me!

Joe Seamhead said...

Well, he just made up for the throw home! Way to go Rendon!

Nats 128 said...

Nice shot Rendon!

NatsLady said...

jeez, paul brandt, are you psychic?

Faraz Shaikh said...

nice call Paul.

NatsLady said...

Seamhead, I agree, BUT, he could have (should have?) had Mattheus warming BEFORE it got to the lefty.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

RISP Nats 2 for 10 Brewers 3 for 5.

Nother we are losing.

Joe Seamhead said...

Denard Span, I can only stick up for you for so long. LOL.

SCNatsFan said...

God it seems Span looks at an awful lot of strikes

Nats 128 said...

I thought Taylor was on fumes and needed to be pulled. Davey went to long and didnt read his pitcher.

David Proctor said...

Davey didn't have anybody up to start the inning because Jordan appeared to be cruising. He got a groundball just out of the reach of Desi. That wasn't an issue. It was only after that that Abad started warming. Davey had to let Abad actually warm up. He couldn't have predicted things would spiral out of control the way they did.

NatsJack in Florida said...

Joe. If you saw the side view of the throw, even though the throw may have been slightly towards first base, Suzuki was a good 4 or 5 feet in front of the plate before Rendon started his throw.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I have watched baseball 60 years or so and pulling the infield in lets a .200 become a .300 hitter, and a .300 a .450 hitters. It makes no sense doing it before the 8th inning.

Cost us 2 runs as Rendon would have caught the ball easily had he been back.

NatsJack in Florida said...

Yep, Joe. I'm all for Span staying in the 7 hole till next season.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Our usual problem of not eough hits put together.

Joe Seamhead said...

The last two games, Denard Span and Bryce Harper collectively?
0-16 (with 9 LOB)

Joe Seamhead said...

The booth is now saying the Brewer's big hit was a foul ball down the firstbase line.
Jack, I don't think even if Suzuki had been back that he would have been able to turn to make the tag, but I think if the throw had been on the 3B side he would have at least made it close.

Another stupid stolen base against us and then a WP.Come on,Craig.

NatsLady said...

128, I think so too. But in a previous game, I thought Jordan was on fumes and Davey left him in and he turned it around. Still, Davey seems to have a pattern of leaving starters in too long. That was okay last year, or okay in the spring when you are building arm strength, but it's August now, the bullpen is in good shape (except maybe Clip and Soriano). We need every win.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Last 2 games Span leads off Harper second.

Go back to Harper leadoff and Span 7th

NatsLady said...

Wow, where has that Ryan Zimmerman been all year??? Coulda used him!

Nats 128 said...

Zimmerman new you all were talking about the balls down the line. Wheres that been all year

David Proctor said...

Wild pitch by Stammen just cost us a run.

Nats 128 said...

I owe you a drink Natslady

Joe Seamhead said...

ALR just made a helluva pick on Desi's throw.
Damn. It does appear that Lady Luck crossed over to the other side. Nice play by RZimm, but just too late.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I think tge placement of the fielders hurt as much. Zim almost on the grass, had he been normal depth easy double play.

ALR let another by him down the line (foul but ump for some reson thought was fair,).

Infield in, in a tied game in the 6th. Rendon woul have easily cught had it been back.

Joe Seamhead said...

A bunch said Davey left Haren I too long last night, too.
Put Jayson back to lead off. Jeesh.

Nats 128 said...

Nats need some good magic here and now.

Secret wasian man said...

It would be a shame to lose this one. Thought we were cruising.

Joe Seamhead said...

K on ball four.

Secret wasian man said...

La Roche just not very good. That was never a strike.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

That ball was never a strike. Why swing. We need the basr runners.

David Proctor said...

Oh my god Desi. I love you and all, but QUIT HITTING INTO DOUBLE PLAYS.

NatsLady said...

Wasn't that the same pitch LaRoche struck out on last time? (Before the HR, I mean). Annnnnnd, Desi another GIDP.

Joe Seamhead said...

Third GIDP today is really bad.

Secret wasian man said...

That's the second time WERTh has got on followed by a ALR K and a Desi dbl play.

NatsFam said...

Anyone else notice that Desmond has 3 GIDPs today?

Perhaps they should put him atop the order? Have him see a few more pitches and reduce the GIDP likelihood?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Then ian grounds a first pitch again.

I dobt mind seing first pitches if they are drivable, but if you are going to beat it into the ground it was never drivable.

Especially after a batter should have walked.

Nats 128 said...

Doubleplays again

NatsLady said...

Oh, Desi. Not supposed to do that.

David Proctor said...

That's the first truly awful throw Desmond has made...maybe all year. He's had some errors on tough plays, but that was...wow.

Unknown said...

cant belive they extended Rizzo what a bum and fuc##### up

NatsJack in Florida said...

Desmond. Playing like every game is a playoff game. Those are his words.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Are you sure it is 3? I thought 2

Joe Seamhead said...

Desi has hit into 3 double plays the last two games, and not even ALR could save him from himself on that throw.

NatsJack in Florida said...

Ahh, a troll has arrived.

Secret wasian man said...

WERTh the only one with any consistency. Desi really hurting us right now. Bullpen blew this one though.

David Proctor said...

And the run from Desi's error scores. Yikes.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I love the suicide squeeze and we simply refuse to ever do it.

With the correct batters it is great.

NatsFam said...

Ahh - the suicide squeeze. Nice to see a team trying to make things happen instead of waiting for them to happen.

Joe Seamhead said...

Werth hit into one earlier.

Unknown said...

ah folks whos worse mccluless of the caps for letting his team do nothing just keep renewing your tickets though,or Rizzo for not doing anything to he;p this team of heartless bafoons.makes Snyder look like a genuis

Secret wasian man said...

Played 23 innings this weekend like the 2012 Nats. Unfortunately the 2013 showed up the last 3, Ughhhhh

David Proctor said...

I'm generally not a fan of the squeeze. I don't like giving up an out and bunting yourself out of a big inning. Having said that, there are times this year when all we've needed is 1 run and Davey has still refused to do it. In those circumstances, I don't understand it.

Secret wasian man said...

Hey Greg. Who are you? At least us LODers have been here a while. GeeeeZ

NatsFanSinceStart said...

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Yeah, lets give the biggest Loser GM of 13 an extension and a raise!! haha

Oh and while we're at it, lets give the gold glove to Zimmerman --!!

Amazing what comes out from under the rug when the Nats are losing. At lease wasian man has been here all along.

NatsJack in Florida said...

Must be upset because the Mariners beat his Orioles again.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

The pitching first 2 games was great.

Today 3 pitchers none very good Jordan was fine for 5 but terrible from than. On.

Nats 128 said...

Secret wasian man said...

Kurt Suzuki had to swing - that would have been strike 3.

Adam Laroche, last inning, didn't.

Faraz Shaikh said...

David Proctor said...

This one hurts because the Reds and D'Backs both lost. Golden opportunity to gain ground. Sigh.

Secret wasian man said...

I'm not hating Greg. I'm with you. And fittingly RIZZOS big prize makes the Final out. Pathetic to lose this game.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Davey's mishandled pitchers all year -- hasn't got a clue when a pitcher is gassed -- This team doesn't even send a coach out to talk to anybody, no matter what is happening

Span hits .400 batting 7th -- so what does Davey do? bats him leadoff again and voila: Span goes back to hitting .100

Good thinking Davey --but you're doing great for a very very tired and fading 70 year old

Unknown said...

tough loss, a game we should have won.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Davey needs to quit putting Span first. Harper leads off Span to 7th gets both of them mote hits.

Why is he so boneheaded he cant see that?

Joe Seamhead said...

Every loss it's a different guilty party that's not performing.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Davey says he's looking for a lineup that scores runs -- he lies When he does find that line up, he changes back up the very next day.

Fire this old Man!!!

SCNatsFan said...

I'm not down on Rizzo at all but Span was a mistake. His chance to correct he ship is get a new CF and push Span into Bernadina's role next year. The guy just can't swing the bat.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Davey and the pitchers gave it away.

Faraz Shaikh said...

yeah I think Span should go back to 7th. Today was a great day to gain a game on DBacks and Reds.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

He can swing tge bat. His problem he pulls outside pitches for some stupid reason.

Unknown said...

good day all see ya at the park.it will get better keep the faith.get well soon steve

David Proctor said...

I don't understand how Davey supposedly gave this game away. Abad started warming after Jordan gave up the single (which was a good pitch and just bounced off Desi's glove). Abad has to actually GET WARM. Davey moved appropriately here. The problem is we have nobody who can go in and strand runners. Mattheus did that last year. Can he go back to that role? Abad sure as hell can't.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Davey Proctor" "This one hurts; had a chance to gain ground."

hahahahahaha

Are you still thinking this team is playoff bound? Hey, I've got a perfectly good Bridge to sell, are you good for it?

hahahaha this is so weirdly, and sadly funny

Secret wasian man said...

Davey is awful. No doubt. But the pen couldn't hold it or even keep it tied. With a young pitcher out there you have to cash in with RISP. Desi and ALR are rally killers.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

What can you do when you're at the macabre mercy of a very bewildered very old 70 going on 85 year old man?

Davey is doing wacky things. He brought in Storen with the flu. he brought in Ohlie too soon after a 115 pitch game (now he's gone) and today he brings in Abad NOT WARMED up.

DAVEY MUST Go

NatsLady said...

pb--agreed. But however bad they are, the Brewers are still a ML team with 35,000 fans at their game. Can't take them for granted, can't take any team for granted.

Now it's really time for Stras and Gio to step up. Period. Not because it's Atlanta, but because we need to WIN games. We are home for the next nine games, can't afford a homestand like the last one.

Barves - take 2 of 3, maybe even 3 of 3 if JZ can throw a good game.
Off Day - enjoy it, but not too much.
Philly - 2 of 3, maybe even 3 of 3, they are in sad shape.
Off-Day - enjoy it but not too muchm
Giants - 2 of 3, maybe even 3 of 3, they are in sad shape.

Come out of the homestand 6/9 or 7/9, maybe better.

David Proctor said...

What the hell? Abad was warmed up. Abad started warming after the single off Desi's glove. My point was that his "long leash" on Jordan was because it took Abad time to warm up. Stop making stuff up.

Faraz Shaikh said...

NatsFanSinceStart, if you don't believe this team has a chance, why do you come here to rain on our parade?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Why is 2 out of 3 good? We had 2 up by 3 with a few innings to go. 2 of. 3 in that situation sucks.

key play to me which still has me scratching my head was the bottom of the 6th, one out, Brewers had men on 2nd & 3rd and the IF was playing in with the game tied 4-4...guy hits a pop-up just behind 2nd base and scores 2...had IF been regular depth that is an out and then next guy pops up to Suzuki...don't get why you have the IF playing in given it was the 6th inning & a tie game.

jeeves, I'm with you on Davey. There has also been a tremendous amount of bad luck/bad timing.

Another factor, I strongly feel, is the boys were not mentally ready for the target on their backs. By that I mean every team (and every manager) playing its top top game against the Nats, for example, getting beat by Garcia who is DFA a couple weeks later. For example, the Dodgers series.

They said in their ads they were ready, but they weren't. Last year, the Nats took the league by surprise--they were good before other teams knew they were good. This year even the lowliest team, even the rawest rookie said to himself, boy, if we can knock of the Nats, that's something. So that's the mental aspect.

The injuries and underperformance, ESPECIALLY by the pitchers, is another factor. I know everyone likes to focus on the offense. But we needed big games and didn't get them from just about every pitcher on the staff. Our stoppers didn't stop. Our bullpen leaked. I think there were injuries hidden far too long (Detwiler).

The women in this forum are more men than you all

Namely: Wasian, Proctor, Seamhead, Wonk, NatsFanfla -- etc.

Go Orioles!! the only team left that might win something.

Sorry, not a "man." Don't think "men" are better than women, don't aspire to be one, and don't find that a compliment AT ALL. Nor should "men" be insulted to be called "women." Take your sexism and stuff it.
