VIDEO: Werth on the Nats' next step

Jayson Werth readily admits his decision to sign with the Nationals two years ago was criticized around baseball. Now that the Nationals own an NL East title with visions of bigger things this season, how does the $126 million right fielder feel about that decision? And how did he cope with the abrupt end to the Nats' 2012 season? He answers all that in my video interview that aired last night on Comcast SportsNet.

baseballreference.com has added 2013 spring training stats to their site, with a column on the far right called "Quality of opposition." For a pitcher, this goes all the way from rookie ball hitters to major-leaguers. A great feature!! I'll be adding this info to my blog grading the lefty specialists.

Sorry, forgot the link to the information on opponents quality.

I'm thinking there is a Part 2 to this interview with Jayson. I have to think he discussed where he may bat in the order and other insight.

like when we my see him on an episode of Duck Dynasty. sorry, not a fan of the beard.

alexva--neither is Rizzo. He said so in his in-game interview yesterday. :)

However, Rizzo also said the team "belongs" to Werth, as in Werth is the team leader.

I care about how Werth's beard looks about as much as I care about how good of an interview Strasburg gives. Why do people constantly obsess about facial hair? I'm much more interested in Werth's wrist than his beard.

NatsLady said...

What can I tell you, 222? I read on the Internetz that Lincecum cutting his hair means he's "serious" about pitching this year. Because, obviously, when he had long hair he was just toying with the game....

i'll buy that. he'll lose the beard when it's too uncomfortable. think dc, atlanta and miami in july and august.

If you want to hear a polished interview, listen to Joe Girardi. He answers without cliches, actually answers the questions, very few ums, throat-clearing, etc. You still have no idea if he is saying anything significant, of course, but he's very smooth.

IIRC Girardi is a Northwestern alum, just like our own Mark Z. Apparently the students there learn to speak in public as well as they write for others.

I believe there are still a few teams with grooming policies and one is the Yankees. No beards or long sideburns or long hair.

There seems to be a Tweeter account for every player with facial hair or other anomaly. That's what I don't get.

I don't get the obsession with Jayson's beard. Hair is a personal decision. Some other folks may like it, others may hate it. Rizzo also stipulated that basically coming from a bald guy, he didn't like all the hair. I took that to mean that he was jealous. Though baseball is a business, Rizzo is running a business, Jayson is an entertainer playing a game.

Papelbon got shelled again. He recovered (sort of) and struck out some guy with "98" on his back...

Actually, I'll take the facial hair over Elvis Andrus' tattoos. I gather this one honors his father, but even so...

With regards to the Yankees' policy, wasn't it Price that just recently said that he wouldn't play for them over their policy?

natsfan1a said...

Yes, I saw an item about that this morning. Now Andrus has a place in the odd baseball injury Hall of Fame. Congrats, or something.

Knoxville, as a Speech Major at Northwestern way back in the '60's, I thank you on behalf of Mark and Girardi for your kind comments about our alma mater.

Re the Werth interview, I note that Mark interpreted his reference to his deal with the Nats as being "unpopular" as referring to the view "around baseball." Listening to it, though, I initially thought he was referring to the view among Nats fans. No doubt Mark is right, but it is certainly true that the team winning and him hitting .300, etc, has certainly changed the local assessment of the signing, beard or no beard.

In 2011 when he was having a bad year, Werth changed his facial hair every other week. In 2012, he kept the beard for the whole season and except for the injury he had a great year. I don't blame him for keeping the beard now.

I actually think the Marlins have a hair policy also. Be nice if they had a baseball policy along with it.

Yes, the Marlins have a hair policy. Jose Reyes had to cut his dreads when he signed there. Did it live on MLB Network. Now I bet he wishes he had signed somewhere that doesn't care about hair.

Yah, Price may say that now just like Johnny Damon once did and off came the beard and long hair after he signed that deal with the Yanker$. Money talks and bull**** walks.

It's surprising to me that the Nats don't have a grooming policy as straight laced as the Lerner's are.

To me these beards, big obvious tats, crazy hairdos, etc, are either marketing ploys or attention grabbers. It sure did Brian Wilson well as he did the trifecta of beard/tats/hair and laughed all the way to the bank!

NatsNat -- at least 222's latest obsession is a service to the NI community.

The beard obsession thing is just pointless, and at least a little annoying.

On to the game!

Good read on Federal Baseball transcribing all of the interviews from yesterday and today:

http://www.federalbaseball.com/2013/3/1/4044226/washington-nationals-on-106-7-the-fan-in-d-c-jordan-zimmermann-ryan

I liked Doug Harris on Rendon and his footwork and Rizzo mentioning Nate Karns. I would put Karns at the top of my list of "wow" so far. I knew Rendon would continue to impress. Was hoping Corey Brown and Rivero would also impress and neither has. Walters has been a big disappointment. He looks like a kid with a bat that has been over-matched most of the time, and Corey Brown is piling up the strikeouts. Those guys are facing good AA pitchers by the time they get in these games!

The head scratcher was Jordan Zimmermann's interview. His goal of 200 innings which he surpassed last year with his playoffs innings sounds like he doesn't want to tell his real personal goals. Jordan pitched 195 2/3 innings during the regular season, 4 1/3 innings short of 200 last year and I just figured his goal would be to master the changeup as that alone will shorten his pitch count and allow him to go longer in games.

When you take a look at King Felix and Verlander and their efficiencies, yes, they throw a lot of innings but they do it because they aren't hitting 100 pitches in the 5th inning.

Werth twisting the dagger more and more hey Cliff Lee you listening?

Totally unbaseball related, but do you know whose voice Werth's sounds like? Young Clint Eastwood. Listen again.

Back to baseball... GO NATS!!

Is this the year Werth's numbers, as modest as they already are -- take a nosedive. He surely is an old 33. I hope Werth produces but the smart money is betting on both Werth and Laroche dropping in offensive productivity. Ooh, Nats. You may have some serious problems this year that even Harper and Desi's increased productivity wont solve.
