Krol is final piece of Morse trade

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Nationals have acquired left-hander Ian Krol, rated as the Athletics' 12th-best prospect entering the season, as the player to be named in January's three-team trade that sent Michael Morse to Seattle.

Krol, 21, joins right-handers A.J. Cole and Blake Treinin as players picked up in the Morse deal, giving the Nationals three pitching prospects in exchange for the slugging left fielder/first baseman. Catcher John Jaso also went from Seattle to Oakland in the trade.

A seventh-round pick in the 2009 draft out of Naperville, Ill., Krol was named the Athletics' minor-league pitcher of the year in 2010 after going 10-4 with a 2.80 ERA in 28 combined games between low-Class A Kane County and high-Class A Stockton. His stock has since fallen, though, after a forearm injury and a suspension for posting a homophobic slur on his Twitter account limited him to only three appearances in 2011.

Krol reached Class AA last year, making eight relief appearances, but overall finished 2-9 with a 5.20 ERA in 29 total games between Stockton and Midland. He was rated Oakland's 12th-best prospect entering this season.

Krol must be lacking in clubhouse quality if he posts slurs. Does he fit in with Rizzo's requirement boundaries?

SonnyG10, agreed, was just having that discussion about him on the in-game thread.

Sonny, that was my immediate thought too - doesn't seem like the kind of "character" Rizzo is consistently talking about. Sounds like a candidate to join a package trade? (PTBNL phase 2)

He is a young kid who made a mistake. Not the first, not the last. I'm sure Rizzo's did his due diligence on him.

Guys you can't seriously judge a person based on 1 tweet. I know that if i was then i would probably have a pretty bad image...he may be a good kid.

Hey I've had my alcohol issues in the past too. Not DUI bad or anything, but problems nonetheless. He still may be a good person when you get to know him, just made a bad decision(s). As for the HS suspension..well he's on his own there from me haha

And we see how YOUR baseball career turned out...

We're all fair-minded Americans here. I think we can agree:

- If the comments he made were about groups A, B, or C, his career and life should be ruined.

- If the comments he made were about groups D, E, or F, we should remember his age and immaturity and let him move forward with his career and his life.

It's only fair.

wow, not cool candide.

And i never had a fraction of the natural talent these guys have anyways. Nothing i did was to the point that it would have been detrimental to any significant degree towards my playing

The dude _is_ only 21.

fwiw . . .

Yeah, and he was only 19 or 20 when he sent the tweet. I'd be way more concerned if he had been a few years older. Sounds like the team rightly came down hard on him and he learned from it. That said, no way he should get another chance if anything remotely like it ever happens again...

Best thing Harper ever did was stop tweeting. I think thats what you call it...."tweeting"

skidge said...

Harper still tweets, just not nearly as often. Goodwin seems to have really stopped, which is probably for the best. (Might be OK if he starts up again when he's a bit more mature...)

Yeah. Goodwin had some problems, too. Rizzo would not have taken those guys if he didn't think they would be OK. If they don't turn out that way, they will join Nyjer Morgan and Elijah Dukes.

I'm with SC, Clip & Store, and Wonk. I'm also with BigCat on twittering or whatever you kids call it. :-)

Sounds like he only throws from the left.

Give the kid a chance!

#1, he's only 21, and #2 he's a lefty--all very understandable.

Also, give him an opportunity to express himself. We can pass judgement later.

Unfortunately, tweeting makes everybody into a social philosopher--which they ain't! Just human beings blabbing.

I dunno. It's not like it's just the one tweet. I can see a teenage boy making ill-considered tweets, but bad judgement generally is hard to change. People were all over Lastings Milledge for a rap video. Now he's playing in Japan.
