CSN's Baseball Show debuts tonight

Spring training has come to an end, the Nationals are on their way north at last, and we at Comcast SportsNet are gearing up for Opening Day with the debut of our new, weekly baseball show. It's called, appropriately enough, "The Baseball Show." Catchy, isn't it?

The 30-minute show will air every Thursday this season at 11 p.m., with replays on Friday at 5 p.m. and again over the weekend. Rob Carlin will be hosting, with yours truly and former Orioles and Mets executive Jim Duquette as analysts. We'll touch on everything going on with the Nats, O's and the rest of the baseball world, with minor-league reports from Chase Hughes and a social media segment with Kellie Cowan.

Tune in tonight to find out how you can participate and interact with us. And be sure to follow @CSNBaseballShow on Twitter.

How do you watch it? From the Website?

what channel would that be on xfinity?

Mark writes "We'll touch on everything going on with the Nats, O's and the rest of the baseball world"

Hmmm, I hope any O's talk is kept to a minimum but I'm sure Comcast wants to broaden their audience and devote some time to them.

I'd be real curious to hear what the favorite MLB teams are within the CSN cable area.

Good luck with the show Mark.

natsfan1a said...

Probably so on broadening the audience. I'll be interested in the Nats and the MiLB stuff.

Speaking of shows...doesn't the MLB Channel do the Nats tonight? I thought I saw it scheduled somewhere but I haven't seen any mention of it here...

Wait, Spring Training is over? Then what am I watching on TV???

According to Amanda: Barring an injury that forces them to alter their plans, the Nationals will send left-hander J.C. Romero to Triple-A Syracuse after the team’s exhibition game on Friday in D.C., manager Davey Johnson said Thursday.

Here is a glimpse into Rizzo and the Nats scouting philosophy. Great quotes from Rizzo especially on Sabremetrics swaying him when he is very positive or negative on a player. Short answer NO.

There's still 1 more ST game to be played tomorrow and then of course the final roster moves.

natsfan1a said...

I think Sam was joking.

baseballswami said...

Not Spring Training- that's in Florida with an expanded roster. This is an EXHIBITION GAME. It's at Nats Park, at home, with an almost- roster. 26?. This is much, much better than spring training , but not as good as regular season. Let's just make sure we are perfectly clear, here. : ). Is it too soon for GYFNG? !!!!

natsfan1a said...

I don't think it's too early, but maybe we could stick "Ns" for "North" after the "Gs" just in case. :-)

baseballswami said...

By the way-- listening to the STL vs Miami game. Apparently the red birds are quite put out that the Nats did not send ANY major league position players to the game yesterday. Excuse me while I play my very tiny violin for them. Also humorous- the Halladay saga. The mound was mushy.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

ICYMI from Adam Kilgore Henry Rodriguez “felt good” today after pitching an inning yesterday, and the Nationals plan on him getting an inning tomorrow. One scout who watched Rodriguez last night, when he started with seven balls and nearly hit Rick Ankiel in the head with a fastball, called the outing, “scary.” That scout predicted the Nationals would start Rodriguez on the disabled list and begin the year with J.C. Romero in the bullpen. “He looked good,” the scout said.

Kilgore seems to be quoting scouts on a regular basis these days but to get them to go out on a limb about a roster move?

Two things I've always liked is scout's opinions on how a pitcher was really throwing and opinions of opposing hitters after the game and the opposing Manager.

One of these days I hope the CSN budget is increased to where they can have a beat writer covering the opposing team's post-game press conference and interview some of their players. Sometimes you walk away with nothing but sometimes you get some real good intel.

Mark's new show is a start as CSN is spending on baseball but I think the other outlets can hire interns to increase their coverage at home to start with.

Everything I turn on today , the talking heads are discussing something annoying. Now -- biogenesis . How about era, hitting, defense? No more shutdown, or ped's , please.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

baseballswami, scandal sells in sports. Yah, it would be nice to talk stats and make predictions but its the media that won't let this Biogenesis thing go away on its own.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

I'm hearing some fringe teams want Chris Young but aren't looking to pay big bucks for him.

Still hoping he comes back to the Nats.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

You know what's coming soon? Mark and the Beat Writers doing their annual predictions.

This should be real interesting. Will anyone predict 105 wins or more for the Nats?

Bryce Harper MVP? JZim Cy Young or Anthony Rendon's callup before Sept 1st?

baseballswami said...

Ghost - I have been wondering where he is. Did he just go home? Is he in minor league camp? How does that work?

Candide said...

Faraz Shaikh said...

Channel 251 on Comcast in Alexandria.

Faraz Shaikh said...

Thanks Candide. 11 PM is a bit late but I will try to watch it.

Candide said...

Faraz, that's why God invented DVRs.

MicheleS said...

Phil Wood and Dave Johnson have no credibility anymore. Watching the MASN sports show and both are incredulous that Micah Owings didn't beat out Tyler Moore for the bench spot. Really?

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

baseballswami, I believe Chris Young since he is a starter doesn't need to pitch except for a side session tomorrow and then hope he gets the call.

I think he said he was going to stay in Florida for a few more days. Worse case situation for him is he goes back to Viera and joins the Syracuse guys on the Minor League side and then the best case scenario for him is either signing a big league contract with someone to start or take a long-man job in a bullpen but again nobody wants to pay him large money at this point.

Possibly he gets a $1 million deal and incentives from someone.

A 3rd scenario is a Minor League deal with an opt-out clause.

The fact that he hasn't been scooped up yet tells me that teams feel they have better choices and the scouting on him is worse than the boxscores he achieved. Like they say, don't rely on Spring Training numbers.

I believe the Twins want him but don't want to pay a big salary and want to do an incentives laden deal.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

MicheleS, you lost me.

JayB said...

Anymore Micheles? Phil knows trivia and and has a long list of ex players and old scouts in his Rolodex but he knows next to nothing about post 1990s baseball.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

MicheleS, are you saying that you thought Micah Owings DID beat out Tyler Moore and they are saying he DIDN'T?

baseballswami said...

Michele S- saw it- thought the same thing. They really thought Owings would make the team??? Following up on young- so is he technically still a Nat, getting paid, etc?

baseballswami said...

Ghost- broadcasters were shocked at the news of Owings not making the team. I guess we are shocked that they were shocked.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

baseballswami, ok so those MASN#(*$&^$ thought Michah Moore legitimately deserved Tyler Moore's spot?

Dave Johnson I expect that stupidity but I expect better out of Phil Wood and I think he's sinking to a new low possibly below Bill Ladson.

Pardon me while I shed a tear into my very tiny hankie. Or not.

Ghost- that would be correct. Head slap. Doh!!

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

I don't know the full story of how Micah Ownings chose the Nats but I think if he chose an AL team that he could have made a team or 2 in the AL as a RH DH.

If Phil Wood hasn't noticed, this team is moving forward and not backwards.

MicheleS said...

Sorry about that. I can't believe that Phil and Dave thought Micah Owings, a pitcher that is just learning to play the field, would beat out Tyler Moore for the bench spot. Thanks for backing me up Swammi!

Steady Eddie said...

Ghost -- if the Nats gave Young his outright release, per MicheleS, doesn't that mean he doesn't have a MLB camp to work out in (other than one where they're inviting him there to look at him)?

MicheleS said...

FYI Chris Young, Ladson ran into him at the Orlando Airport (ladson tweeted it out). So he is going somewhere

Unknown said...

I think Owings will one day be a solid bench player but he has to go to the minors and prove he can play the field.

I wouldn't want him in the game in extra innings in left or somewhere the first month of the season. It was like Moore last year; I cringed every time a ball was hit to left until later in the year.

Let the guys learn that in the minors.

Well, yeah. Unless he lives in Orlando.

MicheleS said...

Sad news about Johan Santana. Sounds like he tore the shoulder capsule again. Could be a career ender.

baseballswami said...

So, the Mets announce that Santana needs another surgery. That no hitter was quite expensive. I guess everyone still thinks we should have pushed Stras?

Owe you one, Michele! We have been eerily on the same page today.

I thought I knew what Michele meant, just wanted to be sure.

Steady, since Young has no team right now he will probably do what Lohse did to work out. A man without a team. If he is headed out of town, you have to wonder if he has something lined up with the Padres as they are interested in him.

Again, its down at Ladson levels and Bill has been much better of late.

know we heard a few here that 100% thought that Owings would take the last bench spot and the difference is they aren't paid to cover the team like Phil.

Then you had Phil Wood saying Ryan Zimmerman may start the season on the DL because he wasn't playing the field in games and he had one other bizarre proclamation that I can't remember.

Phil Wood is history. Literally. What a joke. Since I'm not an old Senators fan, I really find nothing of interest in his schtick. Time for him to be put out to pasture. I mean if Tim McCarver can retire, can Phil be far behind?

Just watched a little of this afternoon's game. The ESPN announcers, including Aaron Boone were full of Nats love. Then checked out the 30 clubs in 30 days show on MLB, with Al, Larry, and Dan all calling us the best team in baseball and Larry and Al picking us to win the World Series. Now checking out Mark's show. This is just too much fun!

I'll be in Section 306, Row D on Monday, and plan to get there really early. Anyone interested in a NI meetup before the game as we did during the playoffs? It was behind Section 312 at the picnic tables, right?

Tonight's show started great with Zuck talking about the Nats and then the next segment was about the O's. I immediately flipped to something else, college BB, and never went back.

Seriously, I won't watch some combo baseball show with the Nats and O's. I couldn't care less about the team from Baltimore, just as in football. The Redskins have their own show, it's time for the same for the Nats.

I think the Nats have earned their own show. What, does Angelos own part of CSN?

Anonymous said...

I'm not interested in a hybrid Nationals/Orioles show of any kind. I want a pure, 100 percent Nats show.

I subscribe to the Washington Post. It does not have a section called "Baltimore."

I watch regular programs on the Redskins. They do not carve out sections of programs for the Ravens.

I watch the evening news on Channels, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9. None of them has a nightly segment entitled, "Today in Baltimore."

Sorry, but if this is another hybrid, count me out.

Steady Eddie said...

That is bizarre about CSN having an Os segment. Who do they think they're going to take market share away from with coverage like that? Yes, there are a few Os fans in the DC area, and more sort-of fans left over from the Cal days, post-Senators and pre-Nats. Why would they look to this for a bit of Os coverage when there's more than they could want on MASN and the Balmer channels?

222 -- I'll join you at that meet-up if I can get away from work in time.

Scooter said...

Dunno if youse guys noticed, but they talked about other teams as well. It appears that CSN wants its Baseball Show to be about, well, baseball. I guess they could have called it The Nats Show, if that's what they were going to do. In hindrospect, maybe we should have picked up on that hint. I don't know how regularly I'll watch, but hey, it's an option.

Ooh, Milone and Lincecum are pitching. Neat!

baseballswami said...

Count me in on the "just say no to the O's". Talking about MLB in general, ok. No more joint shows or coverage for me. Might DVR the show so I can cherry pick.

MicheleS said...

While not a fan of the O's, Scooter is right, it's the BASEBALL SHOW, plus would rather hear about our neighbors from Mark than the MASN Slirp you get.

Rabbit34 said...

Why is it hard for people to figure out how to watch the program???? Go to the menu guide (hit menu button on your remote) for your TV cable distributer and look up what channel CSN is on! Geesh. Come on guys. Use a little common sense.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

I mentioned the O's thing at the top of the page. Trying to broaden the audience while taking the chance of alienating Nats purists.

I think CSN is making a mistake but look who they have, the O's GM's cousin Duquette who is a talking head for the O's.
