Nats vs. Mets - 2/28/13

USA Today Sports Images
The Nats and Mets play under the lights tonight in Viera.
Everybody in the Nationals' rotation has now pitched once this spring. Tonight, Round 2 begins with Stephen Strasburg on the mound, facing the same Mets club he went up against five days ago. Strasburg threw 41 pitches over two innings in that start; tonight he'll be allowed to go three innings and 60 pitches as he build his arm up in advance of Opening Day. The right-hander also will put some added emphasis on fastball command, something he struggled with in the first inning last time out.

Strasburg will have several regulars behind him tonight, plus No. 1 catcher Kurt Suzuki calling pitches behind the plate. You'll notice Suzuki is actually hitting second for this game, a rare place to find a catcher. Don't read anything into that, though. Davey Johnson is merely trying to get Suzuki two at-bats as quick as possible so he can come out of the game.

Tonight's game also is the first to be televised by the Nats' crew this spring. Bob and F.P. are back for another season together and will have the call beginning at 6 p.m. If you live outside the D.C. area, you can pick up their simulcast on MLB Network.

Enjoy the game and the conversation...

Man, that Mets lineup really stinks.

MicheleS said...

Theo.. inspite of that.. Valdespin... never forget that terdo.. he kills us

Joe Seamhead said...

Well, the only thing better then watching on TV with bob and FP would be sitting right in front of them. I'm suffering the same "sooo jealous" syndrome as Michele. Enjoy, Sofa. We're heading down a week from Monday. GYFNG!!!

my first chance to see Danny and his ground hog day LH approach and swing.

Njack you there tonight?

Looking forward to the game and some in game color commentary from the incomparable Sofa, on site at last.

For anyone interested, my review of Harper's hustle-derived runs in July is in the comments on the last post.

section 222,nice collection.

Nice when our manager doesn't even know if one of his pitchers threw a bullpen session or live BP today.

Danny looking good with the swing.

Men Rendon swing looks great.

baseballswami said...

Man, that Rendon kid has a pretty swing!

Unknown said...

Rendon needs to take over at 2B.

MicheleS said...

Gee.. I think this Span kid is going to work out well for us.

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

I would say among Espi with his new swing, Lombo chomping at the bit and Rendon nipping at everybody's heels, second base is in good hands. World Series or bust!

kid, lol to me they are all adults

tayo said...

The Kid is ready. call him up as FP would say.

Joe Seamhead said...

Though only ST, that inning of Span and Werth is something we'll all get used to pretty easily,eh?

2 RBI's for Tony Rendon

Strasburg seems kinda like a big douche..

JayB said...

well at least he has a different leg kick from the LH side. Njack pointed that out. So....he is trying at least.

MicheleS said...

WT.. geesh he is painfully shy. At least he is trying.

JayB said...

likely an HR if not for the wind.....but he only say fastballs....we know he can hit them.

Unknown said...

I'm just saying.. Those one word answers come off like he has a huge attitude. Leave the interviews to Gio/Det if your gonna act like that.

MicheleS said...

WT.. these things take PRACTICE.. at least he is talking now. He is actually trying which is a major step for him

tayo said...

Chill. Everyone has different personalities. Better not to force them into being what they are not. he had some other longer worded answers later on.

Yunesky Maya is a Washington National- why?

Unknown said...

Rizzo & LaRoche... two great interviews

Joe Seamhead said...

20-20 hindsight, Swami, Maya may be Mike Rizzo's worst move.

I hear Wang is going to be pitching in the WBC. I guess sometimes they have to take chances on pitchers - if one or two work out it might be worth some if the so-so signings. Did I see Danny walk for the second time this spring?

tayo said...

Man Skole looks huge.

MicheleS said...

I see the Mets Bullpen is in Mid Season form

Perez must be fast as lightning! Has anybody been able to put him out, on an infield grounder, yet?

baseballswami said...

Mattheus, Skole, Marrero with the defensive inning! Some of these younger guys have been impressive.

Carpenter reminds me of a dog that is always looking to please it's owner. Won't someone please offer him a job!!! At least F.P. can broadcast and we know who the "A" is in that booth!!!

JayB said...

Njack....what do you make of this comment? As you said he looks lost at the plate (Danny). What I say last night was a major change in his LH load (no big leg kick) but no proof he has closed the huge hole in his swing on Braking Balls down and in. He only saw fast balls from the LH side right? I would agree with Davey....I too am please that he at least is trying something new but.....when pitchers start trying to get him out with BB down and in.....who knows as of now....correct?

Johnson singled out second baseman Danny Espinosa and shortstop Ian Desmond as two players he’s pleased with at the plate early this spring. Espinosa was 1-for-2 with a double on Thursday and Desmond is 4-for-8 this spring.
