Bruney DFA'd

DENVER -- Brian Bruney was designated for assignment following today's 2-1 loss to the Rockies, clearing roster space for Drew Storen to have his contract purchased.

Storen will fly to St. Louis tonight and meet the Nationals there. He'll be in uniform and available out of the bullpen for tomorrow night's game.

More to come...

WOW, didn't think Rizzo would do it? He has the arm. Batista has the bugs bunny. The back-and-forth between Rizzo and Riggleman is priceless. Rizzo is always right there front and center in the stands behind Riggleman. Someone should start thinking about a book?

From Ladson: RHP Brian Bruney is not sure if he will go to Triple-A Syracuse . "I don't consider myself a Minor Leaguer,"

Now how will Mike explain that to the MASN folks who have been pretty staunch defenders? He dissed them by claiming it wasn't happening?

This organization is maturing by moves like this. Sometimes you have to eat your mistakes as part of doing business.

Kick Rocks Bruney. You were Hanrahan bad.

Again, Anonymous, Rizzo did not claim it wasn't happening. He did not confirm it was happening. Not the same thing.

Tell Bruney not to let the screen door slam him in the butt on his way out. We're trying to win here!

I didn't think Rizzo dissed anybody, it looked to me he didn't care to be pushed to respond before he was ready.

Welcome to the big leagues, kid. Now give us a seventh- and eighth-inning hold now and then.

Bruney = Brutal.

As has been wished, don't let the door hit you. Plus, your playoff beard sucked.

Can we still lace them up and give them nine innings of hell?

Got to give them credit. They did this just as Clippard is starting to show signs of wear and tear or regression to mean with 2 out of his last 3 outings not so good. One thing we know, I don't think Storen will be out there giving up lead up walks.

Time for Clip, Store, and Save!!!

I've also put in a sell order for all my Novartis stock. I'm betting that Maalox sales will plummet in the DC market.

I guess the Nats were right to take Bruney to arbitration. His reaction makes me respect Bergmann all the more. Take your demotion like a man and work hard to earn your way back.

@Sunderland: As long as I'm still drinking, I wouldn't short that Maalox stock quite yet. You need something to wash down that cheap Bourbon.

Why Bruney, and not Batista??? Or is he next? Oh, that's right,Batista has than Rizzo-Arizona connection that Bruney didn't have.

lessee... bruney's ERA is a run and a half higher, he's not as flexible (i.e., capable of swing starting or pitching multiple innings), and batista's WHIP is nearly a full point lower (1.57 vs bruney's 2.32 (which is astronomically high).

bruney's only positive above batista is more Ks. and a couple of years younger.

While I agree with demoting Bruney (as greg said, a WHIP of 2.32 is astronomical!), I'm one who thinks that he might have potential. He throws hard, and if he can control it, he might do some good. Let's not dis him on his way out, because, after all, it'd be nice if he got it together and came back up.

In the meantime, we're now seeing the opening of Part 1 of 2 of the 2009 draft!

We've had too many pitchers like this who have cost us innumerable amounts of games and heartache.

While I'm not happy about Batista still being here, I am happy about Bruney going over him. Batista can still eat innings, sort of, Bruney can't pitch a strike with a gun to his head. He can join the ranks of Gascanrahan and DCab and all the other cannons that had zip control.

there's a reason the yankees traded him for a shot at a rule 5 guy.

throwing hard isn't pitching.

Good news. Bruney was absolutely painful to watch.

Bruney is a lot more D-Cab than Hanrahan.

Hanrahan showed that he can hold down a major league job in 2008, and while 2009 was a disaster, it was more from overuse in 08 than lack of talent. Since moving to Pittsburgh and pitching 2-3 innings per week instead of 3-4, he has regained some control and is missing bats.

Bruney has always walked nearly as many as struck out, and his lack of control may have actually helped him as hitters were less likely to swing at meatballs over the middle of the plate. He got a chance because of his ties to management with the D-Backs, and he blew it. It is his responsibility to accept the assignment and contribute if somebody gets hurt.

Another thing on Bruney, I hear his fastball velocity is down 1 or 2 MPH which means that he's probably a bit more scared that he can't throw it by people this year and is nibbling a bit more in the strike zone or overthrowing to try to compensate.
