Nats vs. Marlins - 3/9/13

Chase here filling in for Mark as he takes a few days off. The Nationals face the Marlins today in Viera for the third time this spring. Starting for the Marlins are a few familiar names, but of course Giancarlo Stanton is missing. He is busy hitting would-be-game-changing balls to the warning track in the World Baseball Classic (I kid, I kid).

On the mound for Washington is Chris Young who threw 41 pitches in an intrasquad game earlier this week. Behind him will be about as full a lineup as the Nats will showcase this spring. You have just about everyone in place, plus Steve Lombardozzi hitting ninth.

The Nats scored ten runs against the Cardinals yesterday, we'll see if they can carry that production over.

Anyways, here are the lineups...

Can someone tell me if there is a sane reason why MASN sends its Nationals broadcast team all the way down to Viera to broadcast just one game at a time? Wouldn't it make econmic sense to have them broadcast a weekend's worth of games (3) before they return north?

Anna Peregrina said...

Is there anyone at the game to keep us posted? I see Werth and Bryce have back-to-back singles.

Anna Peregrina said...

Maybe tonight it's Stammen who is suffering from dead arm.

Sam said...

I am at the game with my dad, and I can happily report that Chris Young probably won't make the team.

Ohh, you wanted something interesting? Jayson Werth's bat flip after hitting the ball is in mid-season form.

Anna Peregrina said...

Thanks, it was getting lonely out here in England.
Maybe the homers were interesting too.

Sam said...

The homers were no doubters off the bat. They were bombs. Wind was blowing out to right field quite a bit, but those two shots didn't need any help.

Doc said...

Perry has live arm--5 scoreless innings in last 2 appearances.

Span and ALR have dead bat!

WARNING... I think djinfl's twitter account has been hacked. I just got a direct message from him inviting me to look at a picture of me - not any of the Nats in Florida (and I'm about 1500 miles away from Viera...). When I clicked on the message, I got a new screen inviting me to logon to twitter, but when I looked at the URL, it was NOT twitter (started "http://ftwitter..."

Typo above - djbinfl.

How hard is twitter? I am so frustrated to not have any baseball to follow and I just don't want to spend the money for whatever that thing is on mlb. I am guessing its fine but once we get real baseball, I can follow with what I have.

djinFl. said...

Thanks for the heads up Candide. That is the second time. At least the message was not abusive like the last one. When RZimm sends you a note because it is bad, it is real bad.

Anna Peregrina said...

I'm on Twitter .... I think .... but I don't know how to find game comments on it.

Anna Peregrina said...

And yet I DID get the spam from djinFl's Twitter.

MicheleS said...

Anna.. Twitter. Are you following all the beat writers? If so.. scroll through there feeds and you will find tons of nats fans to follow.

SJM308. Do you to text messages on your phone? Twitter is the same thing except it's a public forum

home run for Walters two days in a row. He trying to make the team or something? :)

Gonat said...

Sonny, Davey already said Walters was going to be cut in the last cuts. Sounds like they plan on keeping him with the big boys for the to the last week of March.

Do you think he's still avoiding Jayson Werth?

Twitter is easy to follow, you can comment if you want but you don't have to. Once you get started it will suggest more and more people to follow. The tweets are usually very immediate. Another benefit-- no big, long, argumentative posts!

I got the same spam phishing tweet as Candide from dj AND from Natslady.

I guess I well never tweet since I can barely use my 6yr. Old cell phone to even make calls. I got one just to keep certain people quiet about emergencies. I pay $100/ year and have never used up my min. In any year.

Can I get twitter on an iPad?

Candide said...

Yes. Just go to the app store and download/install.

Joe Seamhead said...

I was new to Twitter. The very first Tweet I opened was from a member on this board who had been hacked. I didn't know, opened phishing spam, now I'm hacked. Bad start for me with Twitter. Careful what you open.

sjm308 said...

OK Insiders and first, as always, thank you.

Just downloaded/installed twitter.

Am following Mark, Kilgore, Comak and Kolko and Desmond. Anymore recommendations? I plan to just read and not contact although it looks like you could.

No problem, there's T-Mo and Lombo plus the Shark. T-Mo is a better power hitter and run producer than ALR and Lombo is probably just as good as Span at lead-off ... plus? Harper and Brown can both play CF pretty well and with reps should improve. And given Span's salary etc. there nothing carved in stone that says he has to start. And its the same with ALR and Davey knows it.

Carlos Baerga sighting in the WBC, on the PR bench.

Holden Baroque said...

I think if the Nats did a fantasy camp, you'd have to get Carlos, maybe Vinny, and if he does retire, of course Livan. Chief, of course, is still working. Maybe Brad Wilkerson?

Who else?

MicheleS said...

SJM.. @mattsbats is the kid who blogs. His site is MattsBats.com. Jakob Lang is a hoot to for young fans.

I did a video of Jakob to enter him in the Bryce Harper Swag contest and he won! He is very funny in a way a kid who doesn't know everything can be funny.

MattsBats (Matt Eisner) just did an interview with Ryan Zimmermann's wife. It was really good. After seeing him on TV I could tell he is very smart for an 8 year old.

That may be good. He used to tweet a lot of stuff that wasn't on par with what the typical Nats player would write.

ZWalt is getting ready for St. Paddy's Day.

But he'll only wear the green laces when he knows Werth isn't around. Too bad Werth isn't Irish!

Hey sports fans the Canucks won big to-day in the WBC, both on the diamond and in the ring.

Those wimpy ball teams gotta realize that you never rumble with hockey players dressed up as ballplayers. LOL

Thanks for all the suggestions

Loved watching Det pitch even though the announcer had no clue about his role last year. I am impressed with Jim Kaat though who said before the inning started that Det would induce lots of ground balls if he was on. Results were 3 ground balls although Phillips made a super play on the last one.

Steady Eddie said...

Det keeps on mowing them down. Doin' the Nats proud.

Det was happy. Got his first save--the long way--and he's keeping the game ball. Wonder if it counts in arbitration.

If Lombo and Moore continue to do well and Span and LR don't, does anyone think Johnson would be inclined to use them sooner? You know how we always have to "wait" for someone to "come around".

Joe Seamhead said...

I don't get where anyone is coming from that is drawing any conclusion based on Spring Training that Tyler Moore is going to start very many games over ALR, or Denard Span. Adam LaRoche was the best fielding, and arguably the best hitting first baseman in the National League last year, not to mention he is unquestionably Davey Johnson's choice to continue being the starting 1B. As to Moore getting a ton of PT in right field, do you really think that Mike Rizzo traded the best pitching prospect we had so that Span would sit on the bench at the added expense of Tyler's defense in LF? Moore makes Morse look like a Gold Glove in comparison. Barring disaster from injuries Moore will primarily be a pinch hitter, getting some occasional PT in left and 1B.Likewise for Lombo, except his PT will be mostly at 2B. As to Rendon, it's highly unlikely that, again barring injuries, that we'll see him until summer, at the earliest.Of course, if Danny Espinosa blows out his shoulder, or RZ's surgical repairs don't hold up, all bets are off. As to Corey Brown, the only way he comes north at the start of the season is if we trade Bernadina. If the day comes that Ryan Zimmerman ever moves to 1B, it won't be before 2015. Of course, one of the great things about baseball is that nobody is ever right all of the time, and I could certainly be wrong on any of the above, but it's how I see it unfolding. It's going to be an exciting ride for sure!

"I don't get where anyone is coming from that is drawing any conclusion based on Spring Training that Tyler Moore is going to start very many games over ALR, or Denard Span."

I think you're right. ALR's defense is just too important to the team's success. All Span has to do is get on base and he will score. Brown is a better all-around player, but the Nats needed a lead-off guy, not another slugger, so Span gets the nod. He makes the team better because he is such a good fit for a long-time team need.

I have been intrigued by Micah Owings ever since Rizzo signed him. He can play 1b and the OF just as well, or better, than Moore, and is also a power bat who can come off the bench and hit for power from the right side. I would not be surprised to see the Nats send Moore down to Syracuse to work on improving his game, every day, while Owings takes his slot as a pinch hitter, late-game replacement at either 1b or the OF.

"As to Rendon, it's highly unlikely that, again barring injuries, that we'll see him until summer, at the earliest."

You're probably right. Rendon does not need any more PT in the minors, just as Ryan did not need any more reps in the minors when the Nats brought him up at the age of 20, just weeks after signing him out of Virginia. And we all know Harper, at 19 years of age, was doing poorly in the minors when the Nats brought him up, last year. Rendon is already better than either of them were when they came up. I don't know what Davey and Rizzo are thinking, but they have to consider a lot more than I do about who to play, and where, and when. But it won't be long before we see Mr. Rendon in DC. He is just too darned good.

"As to Corey Brown, the only way he comes north at the start of the season is if we trade Bernadina."

Right, again. A few years ago, Brown would have been a cinch to start for the Nats in CF. He is way better than any of the other dozens of CFers the Nats have tried since 2005, until you get to Werth and Harper last year. He's better than Morgan, Logan, Ankiel, Milledge - whoever else you can name. He just came along at the wrong time.

Doc said...

Correctomundo Laddie Blah Blah on Rendon.

On an other team in need of a 3B guy, he'd be in the opening day lineup.

More ready than RZim than Harps when they came to the Show.

But all dressed up, and nowhere to go for our guy Anthony. Major/Minors, Rendon has one of the best RH swings in baseball!

As smooth as his swing is (he has a LHer's swing, in a RHer's body), his fielding's just as outstanding.

Laddie Blah Blah said...

"On an other team in need of a 3B guy, he'd be in the opening day lineup."

He would not only start, he would be an immediate standout and probable ROY candidate from day 1.

This team is that good. Their minor league catchers, Solano and Onion, are way better than Bard and Nieves from just 3 years ago. Rendon and Lombo up the middle are way better than Guzman/Lopez, et. al. at SS and 2b. And Brown in CF is way, way better than the parade of incompetents the Nats played out there for years on end.

That's before you even get to the pitching staff. Guys like Karns and Duke would have been starters over guys like Chico, Martis, et. al.

Other than RZ at 3rd base and Willingham in LF, you would be hard-pressed to name a single former Nat starter, or present Nat, who could replace our top bench players or top minor leaguers, at any position. Maybe Nick, if he weren't so injury prone, or Young for one magical season at 1b. That's about it.

Joe Seamhead said...

Laddie, I was right with you until you said your say on Willingham. He was/is a very mediocre left fielder. Good bat, or not, he wouldn't play on this team, imho.
