Maldonado to DL, Moore returning

The Nationals will place catcher Carlos Maldonado on the disabled list with a back injury before Thursday's game and recalled first baseman/outfielder Tyler Moore from Class AAA Syracuse, manager Davey Johnson said following tonight's 5-3 win over the Mets.

Maldonado hasn't appeared in a game since May 29 in Miami and has been experiencing what he referred to as back spasms ever since. The 33-year-old is 0-for-9 with an RBI in four total games since joining the Nationals' roster three weeks ago after injuries knocked out both Wilson Ramos and Sandy Leon.

Moore returns only one week after he was optioned to Syracuse. The slugger had only three hits in 17 big-league at-bats but picked up right where he left off when he returned to Class AAA, going 9-for-21 with two homers in his first five games back in the minors.

In other injury news, veteran utilityman Mark DeRosa will begin a rehab assignment for Class A Potomac either Thursday or Friday, Johnson said. DeRosa has been out since late April with an oblique strain.

Fortunately, the Chiefs squeaked two victories out without him. One was a 1 hit gem by the two pitchers promoted from Harrisburg Mandel and Garcia.

Seeing him get yanked early in the first game of the double header was nerve wracking Davey!! Sure glad he wasn't injured.

Hope Moore gets some action in the bigs.

So what are they going to use moore for this time around? Anything different?

Ben Myers (Auburn/Syracuse) : Since returning to the Chiefs for five games and change, Tyler Moore is 9-for-23 with three doubles, one triple, and pair of homers.

Quit screwin' around Davey, put the guy IN the lineup. Thank you.

Hagerstown had an off night. The Suns scored only 9 runs.

The Nats reach the turn of the brutal 32 at 9-7 and they're back to 10 games over .500.

Despite the tough competition and the incredible run of injuries, the Nats have split their games since they started 14-4.

DCWonk -- I suspect the likely use of Moore is fairly simple: DHing and maybe a couple of days giving LaRoche a blow is his reward for patiently sitting on the pine in the Show when he could have been raking and getting consistent ABs in AAA. If Davey had wanted a position starter he would have taken Brown, as Moore is still without a position on the big team. All the more so as Davey clearly wants Lombo in LF and at lead off. They can bring back Lidge and still be at 25, and it looks like DeRosa will come back, and Moore go back down unless he's been raking, after the O's series.

Mark Z, can you remove AceSmith's spam posts?

I second ehay2k's suggestion. AceSmith's "analysis" of why the Mets will win tonight is complete nonsense and totally juvenile. He provides no data on how the Nats hitters have stacked up against Dicky in the past nor how Mets hitters have done against CMW. He might be right, but if he is, its just luck.

I believe Davey said Morse will DH, in order to spare his last the strain of throwing. Perhaps Moore will play in the outfield?

Grrr auto correct- to spare his *lat* the strain of throwing...

D'oh! I forgot about the DH stuff coming up. That makes sense.
