METS UPDATE
New York has been hovering around the .500 mark most of the summer but hasn't been able to get over the hump lately, having lost four of their last five to fall to 71-75. A golden opportunity for a win last night was squandered, with the bases loaded but stranded in the bottom of the 10th and then a four-run 11th surrendered to the Cubs.

Last night's game featured its own controversy, with MLB declaring the Mets were not allowed to wear hats honoring the New York police and fire departments in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Ten years earlier, the Mets had defied MLB's orders and worn the hats in their first game at Shea Stadium after 9/11. This time, they surrendered to the league's demands.

The biggest on-field question the remainder of this season centers on Jose Reyes, the pending free agent who is in pursuit of the NL batting title. Though he singled in the first inning last night to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, Reyes finished 1-for-5 and saw his season average dip to .332. The Brewers' Ryan Braun now sits only one point behind him.

And guess who is now a member of the Mets' rotation? Why, none other than Miss Iowa himself, Miguel Batista. The veteran right-hander had pitched well in his first two starts for New York, allowing only three runs over 12 innings. But in last night's loss to Chicago, he gave up four runs on five hits in only five innings, walking three and plunking two batters.

Who the hell does MLB think that they are to prevent the Mets from honoring the First Responders?

Bud Selig needs to ignore his $18 million salary for just for one minute and realize that there are more important things in this world than his petty MLB logo on a baseball cap.

What a complete @#$%hole!

My suggestion is 1 game per year each team is allowed to wear a tribute cap during the game. It doesn't get out of hand that way and generally there isn't more than 1 time a year a team would have a reason to do it.

MLB, Bud Selig. Joe Torre, et al should be ashamed of themselves. They have the chance to sink even lower if they fine David Wright for wearing the NYFD cap in the dugout

On a similar topic. I was disappointed that yesterday's ceremony at Nats Park was so low key. I was hoping for a much more meaningful and memorable tribute. Although the 3 dingers in a row - in honor of NY, the Pentagon, and Shanksville was a nice touch.

In 2010 Buerhle's ERA was 4.28 and his W/L was 13-13.

In 2010 Livo's ERA was 3.66 and his W/L was 10-12.

Buerhle goes for $14 million a year. Livo goes for $1 million.

Buerhle had a better year than Livo this year. He was also on a better team.

Steve M., good idea. One special cap per season gives each team the opportunity to honor a particular event or person, but it doesn't get out of hand. The Nats were already wearing their patriotic uni's and I think that was fine.

sm13-- Myself, I wasn't disappointed in the low-key ceremony, the day was flooded with 9/11 memorials, and it was nice to go to a baseball game. Nice touch to honor the pilots and flight attendants. The brass quintet was excellent.

I don't think I have the stomach for watching Det throw any more 400-foot pitches this year. I believe he is pitching himself right off the roster. Tonight is a crucial night for him. If David Wright lights him up, I think his 2012 prospects are dim to none. May already be.

Broken record alert:

Note Mark's stats above. Desmond is "hot" because he has been slugging .545 in the last 10 days, with three home runs.

Espinosa is in a "cold" snap, batting .214 in his last last 8 games.

Now look again at Mark's stats for their on base percentage. Even in the freezer, Espy's percentage is 24 points higher than Desmond's.

Please remove Desi from the leadoff spot.

Also, you all misinterpreted my comment comparing Livo and Buerhle. It was meant to be in favor of having a stable innings-eater LHP in the rotation, like Livo as a--well maybe not "stable"-- innings-eating RHP.

Unfortunately,

a) there will be several suitors for Buerhle

b) he's made something like $85 million to date and is talking about retiring. Even giving a chunk to your agent and the IRS, a person could live on $85 million for 50 years (he's 32).

That said, if Lannan/Detwiler/Milone don't step up, you might want to go for the $14 million.

General Uniform Rules:

All players are required to be in uniform (on the field, in the dugout, and in the bullpen).
On game days that do not require a special uniform (either by team or MLB request) it is generally (but not always) the starting pitcher for a team that chooses the uniform to be worn for that day's game.
All players are required to wear only Club-issued apparel, outerwear, and equipment during batting practice and in any interview room up to 30 minutes following games.
No alterations, writing or illustrations are to be made to any part of the uniform.
No commercial advertisements on uniforms.
Players may not cut or in any way alter the Club-supplied outerwear.
No field personnel may wear distracting jewelry of any kind. Distracting jewelry includes any item worn by a player which, in the opinion of the umpire, could interfere with the play of the game or umpires' ability to make calls, or endanger the health or safety of a player, including the player wearing the jewelry.
No pins or other items may be attached to any portion of the uniform (including the cap) or playing equipment.
Glass buttons and polished metal on a uniform are prohibited.
Tape or other attachments in a non-matching color cannot be put on uniforms.
Any "pattern that imitates or suggests the shape of a baseball" cannot be used on uniforms.

NatsLady, I think Buehrle had a bad 2010 which is why FanGraphs compared his career norms to show this isn't a contract year surge like so many players do in their Free Agent year.

The one thing for Buehrle is having to face 8 batters and a pitcher in the NL and the lefty heavy NL East may be a better fit for him than what he sees in the NL Central.

BTW, Chris Carpenter is off the board as a Free Agent. The Cardinals extended him today.

Unfortunately the field is getting smaller for top pitchers and Wang is still a possibility if it is a low risk contract as I believe there is downside risk with him going a full season with the shoulder.

As I said a couple of months ago, depending on Lannan as a #3 had its risk and Lannan has showed us why. Going at Wang at anything more than a #5 is risky.

1) JZim 2) Stras 3) FreeAgent 4) Lannan 5) TBD

There is one clear factor that would explain these stats. How could Livo look good in 2010 and bad in 2011 while Buehrle is just the opposite? Adam Dunn as a teammate, that's how. So who's on board for bringing back Dunn if they sign Buehrle?

I am cringing at the 3 lefties you name. Lannan stepped up and just stepped back like I thought he would. He came into 2011 in the best shape of his career and it is a long season. He is a #4 or #5 and still makes this team in my opinion. I just think it is a big mistake penciling him in as a #3 starter.

Detwiler & Milone right now are very similar although Detwiler can reach back for 95mph. Neither is fooling anyone after they have seen them once, still, Milone needs a few more games to prove me wrong and I hope I am wrong or another one destined for the bullpen.

Peacock could be the guy to grab the #5 spot or it could be Wang.

Milone and Peacock could also use more time in AAA so I still don't think there is a rush.

I don't see Detwiler needing any more AAA time as he best serves this team in the bullpen. With the added rest, Det may throw a gem tonight. Even if he does, I still don't think it changes what he is. His last month here has shown he is nothing more than a back of the rotation guy. A few innings of showing dominance doesn't make you an Ace.

Steve M. said...

Feel Wood, that is funny on Dunn. I think if the Chisox agreed to eat 1/2 of Dunn's contract, Rizzo still wouldn't take him.

As much as I like ADunn, I think that ship has sailed.

Doc said...

Right on Steve M.!

Not only has the ADunn ship sailed, it has sunk somewhere beyond the horizon of the 2011 batting season.

Adam Dunn had a negative effect on Livo's ERA, and no effect on Buehrle's. The Big Donkey is currently batting as a DH, not a 1B man, and is below the Mendoza line in BA.

More recently quoted batting stat for Dunn against lefties, has him at .037 with 3 hits in 81 ABs--all singles!

I think that you are presupposing that we can contend next year. I don't share your optimism even if we add Buehrle and Crisp. I think that Atalanta and Philly are enough ahead of us where we won't make up the difference in 1 year.

I am not against signing Buehrle for a couple of years because Detwiler and Lannan are back of the rotation guys and so is Milone (it's not that he's done anything wrong it's just that he doesn't really have a put away pitch).

I would sign Wang for 1 year and an option only and for no more than $5 mil and Peacock is interesting and deserves a full shot in ST. The real fun will start when Cole, Meyer and Purke graduate then you don't have to go to battle with 3 no. 5's.

Dan! said...

The chance of Buehrle signing here is roughly ZERO. He will do one of three things. (1) resign with the White Sox, (2) sign with St. Louis (he's been talking about it for years) or (3) retire. Those are the only outcomes.

The chances are never ZERO. Everyone has a price. Just ask Jayson Werth.

The Nats reportedly did this a few years ago (i.e. let the starter decide whether they'd wear the home whites or the alternate red) but now they have adopted the convention of wearing the red jerseys on Sat/Sun and the whites or grays M-F, except for days like 9/11 when they wear the patriotic blue.

Is Lannan is our #4 and there is a big competition for the #5 spot - who is our #3 next year (SS/JZ being #1 and #2, of course)?

baseballswami said...

FP just loves our red, white and blue special holiday unis. I think we are 5 -1 when wearing them. I think it's a good idea to do what the Nats did and have an official uniform for those national holidays - they are regulation, but special for the day. No problem with mlb. Maybe the Mets should have planned ahead and not just assumed that because it was a sympathetic cause it would be ok. I think the idea of once a year is a good one - that way a team could choose one cause to honor without it becoming a haberdashery circus.

About2GetFlamed said...

Let me preface this by saying I am making no comment about MLB's decisions regarding 9/11 commemorations, but I am not sure folks expect sporting events to be patriotic schmaltz-fests. This is not a knock on those embrace overt acts of patriotism and it surely is not a criticism of yesterday's moment of silence commemorating the anniversary of 9/11/2001, an event that merited that respect, but there is a degree of flag-waving, song-singing and general excessiveness to many such displays at professional sporting events and I don't know quite why.

In my view, patriotism is being a good citizen and love of country. It is not decorating yourself like a flag or waving a flag or singing a song or chanting "U.S.A.! U.S.A.!" Somewhere in the past decade or so, it has become part of the expected production of sporting events that you have God Bless America signings in addition to the national anthm, that you have "flags" the size of playing fields, that military honor guards need to "present the colors," that military aircraft need to do flyovers, etc. NASCAR/Fox and moralistic announcers like Joe Buck cram this stuff down our throats like we're all a bunch of lemmings that wouldn't love our country if we weren't offfered a way to do it in a public way and most professional sports franchises are so committed to group think that they crank out the schmaltz whenever possible and quite frankly use our troops and their families as props (do we really need to see families and soliders deployed oversees reunited on the field between quarters of a football game?). Again, let me be clear that the last comment is not addressed at the daily honoring of the rehabbing soldiers at Nationals Park. That is something unique given our location in the capital and it is great that the team hosts the rehabbing solders and that the fans can recognize them in person.

This is more rant than suggestion, but I would like to see sports and sporting events a bit less program-driven when it comes to such things. Let's let sports be sports and let people find and celebrate patriotism in their own ways on their own time.

Hey -- anybody remember just a month or two ago when so many here were bitterly complaining that Milone and Peacock hadn't been brought up yet?

Here's Davey in July: Though fellow lefty Tom Milone has better overall numbers (6-5, 3.51, 95-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio), Johnson indicated the 24-year-old isn't ready for big-league action quite yet.

Huh . . . maybe Davey knew what he was talking about

If I understand the article about Buerhle, he doesn't want a multi-year contract, which would be to our benefit, because we probably don't either. IF, and it's a big IF, we do go after him and get him, we may just Marquis him at the trade deadline along with LaRoche--if our babies develop as we hope.

(Sorry, lotta if's there).

NatsLady said...

@About2GetFlamed: I would have no problem at all if they discontinued "God Bless America" on Sundays. It's been ten years and kids who were born on that day are in 5th grade. Keep it at the National Anthem. Maybe we could do the stand and honor the troops thing in its place, once a week, not at every game.

As a person who lived through the Vietnam experience, I think we do need to recognize the service, especially since with the "volunteer" army so small a portion of our population serves. I had a blast at the softball game, that seems like a great thing to do.

Wonk.....lets just let Milone and Peacock play out. Every year Milone has started slow and then adjusted to the higher league. I am hoping he does that in the bigs. So far, I like his poise and moxy out there. my opinion on his pitching is that he is giving the batters too much credit. Seems every time he gets hurt, its on his change up. Throw that 88-90 mph low and away and hell with it. Catfish Hunter made a living for a long time throwing 88 mph low and away and up and in, with a dinky slider. i'm not saying don't throw the change, just that you are throwing too many of them. i look forward to Peacock's start on Wed

A DC Wonk,

I advocated bringing Milone and Peacock up as well as Lombardozzi and Marrero. Not because I thought they would boost our chances to win but I thought it was time to have a look see at what we have. We had seen enough of Lannan and Livo and Marquis and Gorzerlany. It was time to see if there is someone who is better than of these guys who are all bottom of the rotation types.

I've read about Milone and from what I've seen I think the scouting reports were fairly accurate; he's a strike thrower and a battler but he doesn't have the weapons to consistently get big league hitters out. He maxes out as a decent no. 5 and may even be a cheaper version of John Lannan.

Peacock is a bit more interesting. He came out of nowhere to dominate at AA and with big strike out numbers; he should be given a good look/see in ST.

@About2GetFlamed -- Here here. Very well put. I'm sure alot of work went into the between inning videos and other special ceremonies that they had yesterday, but hardly anyone in the stands was even paying attetion. I imagine some will criticize the fans for that, but I also imagine that many fans had their own very good reasons for wanting to attend a baseball game yesterday that had nothing to do with wanting to participate in a 3 hour long "remembrance" of 9/11. Gosh, even Debbi Taylor got in on the act wither her post game questioning of of Chris Marrero: "How did it feel to be out there on the anniversary of 9/11 and really reflect on all the sacrifices that our troops have made." For goodness sakes.

There weren't videos and tributes at movies or concerts yesterday I don't think. A moment of silence would have been sufficient. At least the rendition of GBA by the Army Brass Quartet was respectful and understated, in contrast to the abomination presented on Labor Day.

I really don't understand why MLB has decided it needs or wants to be the national nanny of patriotic observance. The cynic in me guesses that it is as much for marketing (patriotic hats anyone?) as anything else. That's really unfortunate.

I agree that one of the more intriguing aspects of these last 3 weeks will be seeing just how Peacock and Milone continue to adapt. Marrero seems to have settled in just fine and has in my opinion solidified a spot on next years roster. I also agree that LannEn is a #4 at best and he would be a solid #4 if we can fill that 3rd spot with another good pitcher. That would leave Peacok, Milone, maybe Wang, and you have to think they will give Martis another chance as well in ST. I think Detwiler and Gorzo belong in the bullpen but that is just how I feel and have no stats for that. They both look strong in their first inning or two coming out of the pen and that can be very valuable. Gorzo has not pouted that I have read about and he has decent body language on the mound. I doubt if we get rid of Burnett so would it make any sense at all to have 3 leftys in the bullpen? I will await this groups analysis.

I don't think he gets a spot on the 40 man roster. Maybe. But I don't think so.

As far as facing the best relievers, Ryan Zimmerman has the right type of mindset--the pressure is on the pitcher. The batter is supposed to get out 2 out of 3 times.

Section 222, this curmudgeon heartily endorses your comments about MLB trying to be “the national nanny of patriotic observance." You don't need to be a cynic to see it as positioning for marketing purposes. I just wish the national anthem would be as good often as it was yesterday with the Army brass; too often it's by well-meaning amateurs who don't have the range to pull off a difficult song that lacks musical merit.

And while they’re at it, might they quietly retire the 7th inning rendition of "God Bless America" on Sundays, now that 10 years has passed? Or at least vary it with something like “This Land Is Your Land.”

Between the musical interludes, Clint’s standup routines, the racing presidents, tossing T-shirts and the dance cam, sometimes one wishes we could see more baseball. Who knows, maybe they could get in a few games in 2:45 or even 2:30 like the old days.

What pains me is that Born in the USA is now played as a patriotic song - however, This Land is Your Land also started out as a protest song. I like applauding for the vets, but liked it a lot better when standing was done spontaneously, without mawkish music played incessantly and a notice on the scoreboard to kill the horse even more.

NatsJack, would you agree that if you read Boz for long enough he will give you both sides sooner or later. He was in the tank for the O's at the beginning of the year and made that switch after they folded (again). He was a big Dunn fan and has now gone a different road on that, and I can go on and on.
