Extra security this weekend

Fans attending this weekend's games at Nationals Park should be prepared for heightened security measures coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

According to the Nationals, fans are encouraged to arrive earlier than normal for tonight's 7:05 p.m. game and tomorrow's 1:35 p.m. game against the Astros and leave backpacks, bags and other extra items at home.

The following enhanced security measures will be in place this weekend:

-- Limited entry points will be available for fans entering Nationals Park. Center field gates are scheduled to open at 4:30 p.m. today and 11 a.m. tomorrow.

-- Comprehensive security checks will take place at each entrance.

-- Vehicle checks will occur in parking areas.

-- Bus drop-off and pick-up points will be altered.

-- No outside beverages or liquids of any kind will be permitted into the ballpark. Food items of any kind are strongly discouraged.

Will they touch my junk?

Will they be confiscating RPG's? If so, will they confiscate Strasburg's right arm?

Strongly discouraged? Hmm, so the lightly trained monitor at the gate has discretion to decide whether I can bring my apple or sandwich in the park? That's encouraging.

This stuff is truly silly. MLB should be ashamed.

In these times, concern for fan safety is not silly. Not taking precautions to prevent another possible attack is silly. Thinking that it couldn't happen again is silly.

As usual, the money grubbing power trippers are taking control of everyday citizens in the name of 'security', and using hired bullies to enforce their pretense.

Some Security officials are making a lot of money, making a show of common sense citizens doing common sense things.

Are they going to x-ray the bats and balls?

It's interesting to note (sad for folks like me) that the resell market has it an all time low. As a season ticket holder that paid $55 for club level seats and have great seats (front row) I am amazed at how in the last month tickets are no longer selling. I have my tickets at $35 on Stub hub but there are 2,600 tickets for sell on Stub Hub.
Even tomorrow with Strasberg picthing the market is very depress with 2,600 tickets for sell.

I know that selling tickets in late August and September is tough, but nobody is buying tickets and going to the game.

Thought that maybe it was the rain and those going on vacation, but today is a great day and nobody is buying tickets.

The Cruise of being a season ticket owner

Golfersal, sorry about tix, hope your wife is ok.

I am going to the game but I already have a ticket and an extra to sell. So there you are.

I guess this means I should leave my flask at home? The terrorists truly have won...

True but Section 222's post was perfectly phrased ("so the lightly trained monitor at the gate has discretion to decide..."). The point is, fans are better served by MLB or the DC Police saying 'yay' or 'nay,' not some 11th grade droput.

I think you're missing the point on the food. They will let you in with food. What they are really worried about is long lines - If we all come to the park empty handed (except for our money, couldn't resist), passing through security will be quicker, lines shorter, less frustration for all, etc. Anyhow, leaving early for the game in a few minutes to get my Espi bobblehead and enjoy a Nats win on a beautiful night for baseball.

Golfersal -- I would have gone tonight and bought my tickets on StubHub, but then I heard about the extra security precautions and decided not to go. Just didn't want to: a) put my family at risk if it's a real terrorist threat this weekend and/or; b) deal with long lines and vehicle checks.

I love StubHub in September because we can get the best seats for the best prices. Sat in Section 127 on Sunday.

As for tonight, it is my loss, because it is a beautiful night for baseball.
