Zimmerman aggravates ab strain

Updated at 5:41 p.m.

NEW YORK -- Ryan Zimmerman was held out of the Nationals' lineup for today's series finale against the Mets after aggravating a prior abdominal strain sliding into second base the previous night.

The Nationals are hopeful two days of rest and treatment will be enough to allow Zimmerman to return, though they won't know about his availability for this week's homestand until Tuesday.

This is the same injury that sidelined Zimmerman for three games early in spring training -- he also missed time late in camp with a separate groin strain -- and the third baseman has been experiencing some discomfort since Opening Day.

"When I slid into second last night, I hurt it a little more," Zimmerman said. "It's one of those things where we'll see how it feels. ... It feels bad enough not to play today. So worse than it was [during spring training], but it's not terrible. So we'll see."

I just saw the Rizzo interview on MASN and they have no clue as to the extent of it. Will they say if this was the regular season he would play like we heard during Spring Training?

Of course not, because he isn't playing today and it is the regular season. Troubling.

There goes the last semblance of offense for the Nats. All these injuties to Zimmerman are very disturbing--it's not like he's 35 years old. He's beginning to look like the second coming of Nick Johnson.

I also wondered today if Ryan Zimmerman was going to be injury prone throughout his career. I sure hope not, but it does show that we need depth on our team.

Any word on LaRoche? He was taken out and appeared to have hurt his leg. He looks like the second coming of Nick Johnson even more. Wow!

A few muscle strains early in the the season for a couple years sound like the second coming of Nick Johnson? I'm thinking we've forgotten about the first coming of Nick Johnson. Dude broke his leg and tore a ligament.

I know it's ben a rough start to the season, and I'm guilty of my fair share of Chicken Littling, but Zimmerman's not in need of emergency surgery after a wince-inducing collision or anything...

If Zimmerman would learn to slide feet first these injuries wouldn't occur. This is the second time he has been injured going head first. Remember a couple of years ago he hurt his hand or fingers going head first.

Agree with Ernie. Don't forget how chilly it was in NYC over the weekend. Those muscles tighten up in the cold.

@ Jimmy - I was just about to say that. That's also how Nyjer busted his hand.

I would go so far as to say we don't NEED Ryan to be the one who is aggressive on the base paths. Let the other guys do that. His bat is far too important.

Once again, our conditioning coach appears to be the Pillsbury Doughboy. Honestly, guys, they're called sit-ups and crunches. You might want to try one or two once in a while. Very sad.

From Mark Zuckerman's Twitter feed...Zimmerman sounded less optimistic about his abdominal strain, said feels worse now than it did in spring training.

I read this and just shaking my head as I can read between the lines that he is going to be out for a while, 7 to 20 days with this. Zim was out of Spring Training more than he was in and I thought he stayed out so long to get all of his ailments fixed and back to 100%.

So it looks like Cora is the new 3rd baseman for a while. Not good...

... Anonymous, that's a bit over the top. Any injury is a concern, and this one to Ryan is admittedly, a worry. But hey, anyone can get injured, and any injury can come at any time of the year. The fact that it's early on is a plus ... if it's going to happen at all, it's way better to happen in April than in August. Yes, we and the team have to keep on top of it. But No, we don't have to jettison the entire season just yet.

Go Nats!!

At least we're not hearing Dibble dribble and say: "he should tough it out" ;-)
