GIANTS UPDATE
San Francisco's title defense has gotten off to a bit of a ragged start. The Giants opened the season 1-4, won nine of their next 12, then lost five of six before beating the Pirates yesterday afternoon.

The problems have mostly come at the plate, where hits aren't coming in bunches or at opportune times. The Giants were a paltry 2-for-24 with runners in scoring position during the Pittsburgh series, yet somehow managed to take two of three thanks to their always-strong pitching staff. Overall, they're hitting just .243 with a 304 on-base percentage and having scored only 94 runs in 24 games.

Tim Lincecum, Jonathan Sanchez and Matt Cain (who start the first three games of this series at Nationals Park) have all been in top form so far, though Lincecum was tagged for five runs with six walks in his last start. No. 4 starter Madison Bumgarner is 0-4 and has put 41 men on base in only 23 1/3 innings.

Closer Brian Wilson (whose jet black beard and fauxhawk are unavoidable on TV these days) has been inconsistent himself after opening the season on the DL. Wilson has a 7.71 ERA, a blown save and a loss in 10 games to date.

I notice games 1 and 3 have two righties, and games 2 and 4 two southpaws. Interesting how that happens.

GO Nats take 3 of 4.

Nice pitching match-up tonight.

glad to see our best against Cain all have no business being on the roster even...that bodes well! :(

The last time I remember Lincecum in the stadium was in 2008. The Giants batted around in the third, including a Jason Bergmann-issued RBI walk of Lincecum and the Nats scratched out only one meaningless run. I was still introducing my wife to the sport and it took more than a year to get her to come back to the stadium.

We're going tonight. I really hope history doesn't repeat itself...

@Ernie - I think I actually remember that game.
That was back when I'd listen to the games on the radio while sipping a beer on the front porch.
Good times :)

Dude! I could say so much right now. Why did you share this news? This is Déjà vu all over again. Just kidding. When they win it will be because your wife returned. If they lose it will be because of Ian Desmond...

Speaking of closer facial hair, I note that Drew Storen seems to be attempting to grow some. But is there really any chance that Peach Fuzz Panic will catch on like Fear the Beard did?

Anon 12:03.....you really believe that Nix has no business being on the roster?

I thought that in general, Storen looked more fierce. He usually looks like he is about 12 years old -- it wasn't just the beard (can we really call it a beard?), he seemed to have a more intense expression on his face -less laid-back. Maybe he's trying to change his image so that he looks scary? I know closers are supposed to make you think they're crazy and he has looked very mild before this.

On a recent broadcast, FP said he'd told Storen that he needed to grow a beard in order to look more like a fearsome reliever, to which the kid replied "I can't." Hey, he's working on it... ;-)

Count Sunday as a Giants win. It is becoming apparent that Jordan Zimmerman may never be the starting pitcher projected two years ago. He is the Nats worst starting pitcher. Perhaps he could be groomed as a reliever.
