Balester optioned, Coffey coming off DL

The Nationals optioned right-hander Collin Balester to Class AAA Syracuse following tonight's loss in Pittsburgh, paving the way for Todd Coffey to return from the disabled list tomorrow.

Balester made three appearances during his brief stint with the Nats, allowing three runs (all Thursday in St. Louis) over 3 1/3 total innings. The reliever, who still has minor-league options, figures to make regular trips back and forth from Washington to Syracuse this season.

Coffey, out since April 9 with a strained left calf, is eligible to come off the 15-day DL tomorrow. The right-hander remained with the club during his DL stint and threw off a bullpen mound in Pittsburgh.

Terrible decision. What does Chad Gaudin have to do before they'll get rid of him?

@ Correctomudo Anonymous: What does BallyStar have to do to before the Bobbsey Twins recognize that he's more competitive than 3 other pitchers on this team?

Hate that options helped make this decision. We can only hope that next year when Colin is out of options that they treat him with the same respect. Not sure respect is the correct word here. Question, since Gaudin is out of options, if they did send him down and someone claimed him and the Nationals still wanted to keep him, what could they do? I am not saying this is the right move, just want to try and understand this option thing better.

Agree with Manassas Nats Fan: When the team is losing by 4 or 5 runs and they are giving Ankiel the whole left side of the infield, why in the hell isn't he dropping the bunt for a single. I'll bet he could be successful 7 out of 10 times. Also....who said this Eckstein is a good batting coach. All I see is horrible swings when ahead in the count, chasing balls out of the zone etc. if I was Eck, I would be saving my money

Thought Balester looked good 2 out of the 3 outings he had. 94-95 with a hard overhand curve which he got in the zone. Don't worry Colin, Coffey will get hurt again

After last nights horrible game, who had the energy to watch the Post Game? I did and was blown away by Ray Knight who had the guts to criticize Jayson Werth. He showed 5 balls hit Jayson Werth's way and he made 2 really nice catches but missed 3 and one of them was in the 1st inning and hit off his glove. Ray Knight asked why Jayson Werth didn't dive for it.

So Ray Knight questioned 3 that got away from Jayson Werth but the 2 guys calling the game (Carpenter and Santangelo) didn't question it. Rob Dibble wouldn't have given Werth a pass. Now Carpenter and FP had no problem criticizing Ian Desmond. Desmond is an easy target and Ray Knight gave his opinion on Desmond's technique and why he doesn't catch some of those throws.

While Ray wasn't great as Dibble's permanent replacement, I liked this particular post-game analysis.

I agree that Werth should have caught those balls. He does most days....unlike Desmond who misses most balls most days...Just a short month ago when mark made his predictions...the only one I made was Ian and over 40 errors.....If Riggs keeps putting him out there all season....it will be over 50....He meeds to go back to AA and learn CF.

Carpenter and FP are shills. If they criticize they will be fired. I waited to see if they were gonna show the Werth boots. They didn't. But they showed his play when he ran into the fence. Knight aka Silver Fox is normally blunt and honest with his analysis. I wish Dibble was back too. It kills me when Carpenter talks about "a backdoor breakin ball" or "staying inside the basball."

I have always been in Desmonds corner. My faith is wavering a little bit. Wonder if the maternity stuff is bothering him. But we gotta stick with him. I still think he is gonna be here a long time. Trying him in centerfield is interesting

Didn't Coffey pull a muscle getting out of bed?

Move Ian to 2B with next stop in Harrisburg. Hit lots ground balls at him hard! Danny at SS where he belongs. Get Get Zim from DL ASAP. Dump Gaudin and keep Balester. Think about bringing up young infielder and drop Hairston.

Big Cat, I am with you on Desi. Clearly trying to make a tag before he catches the ball.
