Zimmermann, Clippard contracts renewed

VIERA, Fla. -- The Nationals announced this morning they've renewed the contracts of right-handers Jordan Zimmermann and Tyler Clippard and come to terms with 18 other players who have less than three years of big-league experience.

All members of the Nationals' 40-man roster are now under contract for 2011.

Zimmermann and Clippard were unable to come to terms on their deals with the Nationals, so the team exercised its right to simply assign those players' salaries. This year's figures aren't immediately known, but players generally receive modest raises through the process. Zimmermann and Clippard each made $401,000 last season.

The other 18 players who did come to terms with the club are left-handers Ross Detwiler and Atahualpa Severino; right-handers Collin Balester, Brian Broderick, Adam Carr, Cole Kimball, Garrett Mock, Elvin Ramirez, Henry Rodriguez, Craig Stammen and Drew Storen; catcher Wilson Ramos; infielders Ian Desmond, Danny Espinosa and Chris Marrero; and outfielders Roger Bernadina, Corey Brown and Nyjer Morgan.

I've always kinda wondered about this process. I realize that players prior to arbitration are essentially indentured servants to the club, but the salary negotiations seem especially odd.

I make $401k last year and think that I performed well. I want a 10% raise to $440k or so; if the club refuses they just "assign" salaries? What kind of discussions are these? Is there a meeting or negotiations?

Why would the club even "discuss terms" with a player if the end result would be just to assign a salary to the player?

Hope is that Mr. Zimmermann's future earnings one day will dwarf current earnings.

Anyone: what is the NFL minimum salary vs. MLB min?

You wonder if they make offers to Broderick and Ramirez above what they would normally get to try to put a reason that their rule 5 teams would be more eager to trade them should they not make our 25 man roster.

Man, I REALLY do not like the new header for this site. It just smacks too much of... of... FOOTBALL. (That word just sticks in my throat even when I'm TYPING it!) Worse, for those fans we do share with the Redskins, that STAR must be rubbing 'em the wrong way.

Yes, Mark, could you please comment on what the whole point of this negotiation process is, when at the end of the day, the club can just dictate the salary?

It's better to have at least some chance to talk your way into more money than not.

"In 2010, it means that a player with no credited seasons will receive at least $320,000. For players with one credited season, the minimum salary is $395,000. For players with two credited seasons, the minimum is $470,000. For players with three credited seasons, the minimum is $545,000.

"For players with four to six credited seasons, the minimum pay if $630,000.

"Seven to nine? $755,000.

"And for players with ten or more seasons, the minimum salary is $855,000."

Given his big salary and the relatively paltry one that Tyler Clippard and Jordan Zimmerman recieve, I wonder if Bryce Harper buys their beer.

Good Goods is a web site that markets goods manufactured in China. Gone are the days when ‘Made in China ‘tag meant a substandard product. Present day Chinese made good have a reputation of being durable and in addition are available cheap.
