A battle, but still an effective start

Stephen Strasburg points to the spot on the mound where was slipping all afternoon.
CLEVELAND -- He issued five walks, served up a home run, battled problems with the pitching mound and departed after 5 1/3 innings. Rough day at the ballpark for Stephen Strasburg, huh?

Uh, not exactly. Strasburg did, after all, allow only one run on two hits, striking out eight Indians batters in his second big-league start. Most importantly, the rookie right-hander led his Nationals to a convincing 9-4 victory.

As you can read on CSNwashington.com, the ridiculously high standard Strasburg has set for himself makes outings like this seem pedestrian, even when they are plenty effective.

But, unfortunately, not a quality start. Because of Batista they ended up using 4 relievers instead of 3. That isn't good either.

One word: stopper. Twice now, Strasburg has halted two game slides. That's what you need your ace to do.

Oh, so THIS is what an ace looks like. Turns out it's not Mike Bascik, eh?

Livo still looks like an ace as well. As much as many here continue to refuse to admit expecting him to behave like Miguel Batista any day now. It hasn't happened yet ...

Hey -- just for kicks -- even with the five walks, Straburg's WHIP is 0.89 (btw, Clippard is second on the team, with 0.98, Storen is 1.11, and Capps is an absurdly high 1.47); and batting average against is .143 (Clippard is .174, Storen is .200, Capps is .295)

Mark, it seems obvious to me that the best relief tandem is Storen/Clippard at this point. If things continue the way they are, do you see a change?

Stephen is human, he struggled mightily, it is funny how when you wear Nats colored glasses a 5 walk performance is good but just 5 days ago you all were belittling the accomplishments of Charlie Spooner and JR Richard saying their more K's than Stephen were laughable because they walked 4 IN 9 INNINGS NOT 5 1/3.

I hope Stephen does not take this for win for granted, if not for Storen and the offense it would have been a humiliating sweep by the Indians on National TV!!

Stephen needs to sit down with McCatty and Livo and learn how to compose himself like a professional, not a prima dona and be able to use all of his skills to get out of jams!

What are you talking about? Some frustration with the mound resulting in him kicking at his landing spot two or three times? Prima dona?
I don't think so.

N. Cognito.... I completely skip over any and all Anonymous, Peric, or JayB postings.

I've found my enjoyment of the subscription has increased dramatically once I started skipping them.
