Ross Ohlendorf returns from a shoulder injury to make his first start in three weeks. The veteran right-hander pitched brilliantly prior to his DL stint; you just hope he didn't burn himself out completely with that 114-pitch start against the Mets in a doubleheader.
Former Orioles right-hander Jake Arrieta gets the start for Chicago. He'll be facing a lineup that has Denard Span back in center field leading off but is without Anthony Rendon or Wilson Ramos, each getting the night off.
Updates to come...

8:08 p.m. — We are underway with Denard Span grounding out on Jake Arreita's first pitch. The Nats got a brief scare during BP when Ian Desmond's back locked up. Davey Johnson thought he would need to make a change at shortstop, with Anthony Rendon getting the nod. But Desmond's condition improved, so he remains in the lineup as planned.
8:25 p.m. — The good news: Ohlendorf's fastball velocity in the bottom of the first was 94-95 mph, a very encouraging sign given that it was down around 90 mph in his last rehab start. The bad news: A 95 mph fastball doesn't work when it's thrown right down the pipe as it was to Anthony Rizzo. The Cubs first baseman launched that 3-2 meatball to right field for a solo homer, putting the Cubs up 1-0 after one.
8:50 p.m. — Whoa, it's a rally by the Nats. They loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second, then scored a pair when Kurt Suzuki's sharp grounder ricocheted off Rizzo's glove and into right field, scoring Ian Desmond and Adam LaRoche. Ohlendorf then put down a perfect squeeze bunt, scoring Steve Lombardozzi and giving the Nats a 3-1 lead through two.
9:09 p.m. — Jayson Werth's red-hot summer continues. He just blasted a three-run homer to left, putting the Nats up 6-1 in the third. Check out his updated season totals: .331/.408/.531, 18 homers, 56 RBI, .939 OPS. His batting average, on-base percentage and OPS are higher than in any previous season in his career. That's fairly remarkable when you think about it.
9:27 p.m. — The Nats have six runs already, but Denard Span hasn't played much of any role in that. He's had three at-bats in four innings and grounded out three times: to short, second and third (the last a double play). So Denard is just a groundball to the first baseman away from hitting for the groundball cycle tonight. Not something you ever want to accomplish. Still 6-1 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
9:43 p.m. — Carlos Villanueva replaces Arrieta in the fifth and quickly retires the side. Ohlendorf, though, has found his groove and takes the mound for the bottom of the fifth having allowed only Rizzo's first-inning homer. Still 6-1 Nats.
10:08 p.m. — Well, that didn't go so well. Ohlendorf served up another homer to Rizzo, this one landing on Sheffield Ave. behind the right field fence. One more single ended the right-hander's night at 91 pitches and brought Tanner Roark out of the bullpen. A native of nearby Wilmington, Ill., and former star at the University of Illinois, Roark has more than 100 friends and family in the right field bleachers tonight, and they roared as he entered the game. Unfortunately, they didn't have much else to cheer after that. Roark gave up four straight singles and a sac fly, and just like that, the Nats' 6-1 lead has turned into a 6-6 tie game in the fifth.
10:29 p.m. — Much better stuff from Roark in the bottom of the sixth. He struck out the side, bringing even louder roars from the right field bleachers. Still 6-6 as we go to the seventh.
10:47 p.m. — Whoa, Scott Hairston to the rescue. Three-run bomb to left in the top of the seventh, putting the Nats back on top, 9-6. Hairston is now hitting .297 with four extra-base hits against lefties since joining the Nats. Pretty much exactly what they wanted out of the veteran.
11:04 p.m. — And now the Nats tack on insurance in the top of the eighth. Span makes up for his groundout cycle with an RBI triple. He then scored on Zimmerman's single. It's 11-6 heading to the bottom of the eighth.
11:14 p.m. — A 1-2-3 eighth from Tyler Clippard. Rafael Soriano is warming in the pen, even though the Nats lead by five.
11:33 p.m. — Nats win. Final: 11-6. They improve to 62-64 with a chance to take their third straight from the Cubs tomorrow afternoon.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 314 of 314 Newer› Newest»Harper is suppose to stay back more according to Schu.
He swings in a hutty.
That K the ball could have never been close to the zone.
He needs to listen to his coach.
Wow.... A 57 moth curveball.... Wow..
Harper has been really frustrating to watch lately. Every at bat I seen of his, he has zero hits. I need to not watch him hit, maybe then he will start getting hits.
The wind doesnt carry any of ours.
57mph...
C'mon boys. With this wind tonight, we may need more add-on runs!
Hanger.
HR Derby style pitch to Rizzo.
Rizzo a bomb. Need to get out of this inning and bring in Tanner Roark
I was about to mention I was a little concerned of the lack of hitting the last couple innings.
We need tack on runs. The 4th and 5th ygeycwere swinging likevthey were rushing to finish.
Dang. Ross has hit the wall. Here comes Roark.
He has 2 hits each of the last 3 games. Your flipping away too much it sounds like.
Rendon going in at SS, Desi double switched out. I don't like that.
Quick hook for Davey. I think its the right move altho he always seems to want the starter to finish the 5th to get the W.
Desi had a sore back. Some said he wasnt going to play at all.
I wish Davey could see the wall coming before the pitcher hits it.
I was thinking he was slow
Olendorf could have done that Roark!
So far Ro-Ark not doing the job. Throwing the ball right over the pkate.
Roark throwing BP. Come on. This is rediculous.
Roark isn't fooling anybody.
Miracle if Tanner keeps his 0.00 era now.
McCaty went out and things got worse.
Anyone warming in the bullpen?
How long are they going to stick with this crap?
This stuff of Roark being a Cubs fan is no longer funny.
What else can we do? Stammen is still unavailable, he threw 80+ pitches in the Braves series. Krol is gone. Abad vs a righty? Clippard in the 5th? There's nothing we can do.
5 run lead gone with the blink of a eye.
Just like that... tie game.
Marvin Hudson like action.
Titally nonsence 6-1 to 6-6 in a heartbeat.
Wow... This game is tied... But we fell asleep at the plate... Just started having some dumb at bats and not patient....
Roark isn't having a good game at all.... Trying to figure out why Stammen wasn't bought in...
Right. Krol is gone and the bullpen is a man short so Tracy can keep his job.
Haren of course.
Stammen is unavailable, MrsB. He needs 5 days off because he pretty much started a game (over 2 games, he threw almost 90 pitches) in Atlanta.
This is why I didnt like sending Krol back down.... But whatever...
We need to score more runs as that was just embarrassing...

Right. Krol is gone and the bullpen is a man short so Tracy can keep his job.
Right on. Stupid.
Bats get 3 runs twice, and they quit after that.
Hard to restart, but they have to.
We dont other team's bullpens well.
I forgot about Stammen.... That's right.... That lead change is truly embarrassing....
Interesting SZ....
Same pitch was called a ball to LaRoche.
Lombo you swung one couldnt possibly hit but the last one could drive to left you dont bother.
You trust umps to be consistent? Have you been watching this year?
Wow... Can't even advance the runner...
Here's the thing though MNF: if they swing at balls out of the zone, people get on them for swinging at ball 4. Lombo laid off a pitch that was clearly a ball and was called a ball in the prior AB. Should've been a walk. Instead it's a strikeout.
Pitiful AB by Suzuki.
That was a swing????
Timmons sucks. that was not even close to a swing by Rendon....awful.
Lead off double... And couldn't bring him home.. Livid....
Update RISP Nats 2 for 6. Cubs 3 for 8
Leadoff double for Laroche and the umps make 2 poor calls. Ball outside called a strike on Lombo and Rendon would have walked and the ump calls his check swing a strike.
Personally it would hurt my feeling if called all check swings a strike for all players.
If you dont want to swing dont move the bat.
Cat worry about the umps.
Just gets hits.
Oh great, now you know how to pitch, Roark.
Good inning by Roark... But uhm, where this a few minutes ago...
I wonder if he didnt warm up enough as Ross hit the wall fast.
I guess Stammen is available...
Span has out grounded out for tge cycle. To all 4 infielders.
Lineout...
oh Bryce. Missed by inches.
Jet stream doesnt go out for us.

Wouldn't work MNF. Pitches at 90+ mph, you have to get the bat moving or you'll never catch up to the fastball.
Dammit.... Needed that one to go out... Hairston will Do nothing and we will leave another runner in scoring position...
Here's your chance to silence me Hairston.
Faraz did you see Harper's double?
Please silence him Hairston! Get a hit!
That was not good hitting. An outside pitch he pulled. Should have driven it hard to right.
HAIRSTON!!!
Ghost, we wont be hearing from you in a while.
Ghost??? Where are you? So quiet.
Lol... Hahahahahahahah... That's what I get.... Lol... Again, so glad to be wrong....
I had some things to say about Hairston and the bench if he did nothing.... I will save it for another inning... Lol
.
Hahahahahahaha
Wow, what a shot!

Nice reverse lock, MrsB
Hairston bombs a lefty
I think Hairston probably has more pinch hit RBI than the rest of the bench combined...
But lets not get carried away.. Hairston did well tonight but it's been many more times that he hasn't....
And for crying out loud - it's against the Cubs...
Its tthe Tracy mirage. Does nothing and your ready to send him pakcing and then then hits a full mooner!
Hairston has hit lefties well throughout his career and he's done it with the Nats this year. Not his fault if he's misused.
Little leaguers on. To the 9th 3-3
This SZ is... Unpredictable...
Mrs B
Hairston has hit 1 HR every 9 an this year.
I'm sorry.... But Timmons is a buffoon...
I think I would have left Roarke in after the good 2nd inning for him...
MrsB, true true and you still have to hit it. Lets see some more of that. Thats his first Home Run with the Nats.
Why? Roark probably doesnt hit a 3 run homer like his pinch hitter Hairston did.
You must have a reason though.
I thought someone said Stamman was unavailable. Nice play by Lombo.
What a play by Lombo...
I thought he was unavailable. After throwing 90 pitches, they were saying he'd need 5 days off. This is day 4 though so I guess if he said he was good to go, Davey put him in.
Someone hear said it no Nat official.
Gutty effort by Stayman.
Renton looked foolish thru out his entire at bat...
That strike zone gets wider on 2 strike counts.
Nice Span. WODL even likes that one!
Can some look it up, we had the most looking K and 3rd highest percentage of looking k. This was at all star break.
Still high I am sure.
Look at that.. A 2 out rally.. No one swinging for the fences, people actually having patient at bats (for the most part)... Playing good baseball....
Five run lead. That ought to keep Sorry-Oh-No out of the game.
That hit to right by Zim was pretty same as the pitch he pulled to short in the 7th.
Must have read my post.
I wonder if DJ is gonna give Storen a chance to close tonight...
Clippard worries me in this specific ballpark in this game. He's an extreme flyball hitter and flyballs are bad. He needs strikeouts tonight.
2 innings in a row with a 2 out rally.
He pitched 12 pitches so good for Friday and possibly tomorrow.
Soriano warming despite a 5 run lead?
Soriano for the 9th? Hows about Krol. Oh yah, thats right. Hes in Syracuse.
Werth now at 385 plate appearance. He needs 391.6 to qualify for batting stats.
Who better than Rafael Soriano to blow a 5 run lead!
If Sorry-Oh-No gives up even one run of our lead, we turn him into a gelding.
Will someone tell Sori its legal to have a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th.
Pow!!! Sup!!
MNF, isnt the batting stats PAs move every game by another 3.1 to qualify. Tomorrow will be 394.7 I think.
Boom! What up??'n
Pizza tomorrow insiders! Yeah!!
Thanks Anthony Rizzo.
Thank you Rizzo. Anthony Rizzo that is.
Sori lucky to keep all his parts.
Nice win tonight, boys. Let's get them again tomorrow.
Awesome.
I'm done with Sorry ano
