That look obviously didn't produce much offensively and resulted in a frustrating, 3-2 loss, so Davey proclaimed afterward he planned to go back to the Harper-as-leadoff-man lineup tonight (assuming LaRoche was ready to return). "I do like Harper leading off," the manager said. "I think that frees him up. He's usually on base."
Unfortunately, LaRoche remains out once again, so it's back to the same lineup from last night. We'll have to see if it can mount a challenge against Zack Greinke, and if Gio Gonzalez can out-duel the Dodgers right-hander.
Updates to come...

7:07 p.m. — And we're underway on another steamy July night in the District. Gio Gonzalez starts off Mark Ellis with a fastball for ball one.
7:15 p.m. — As has often been the case this season, Gio got himself into some trouble in the top of the first. This time, though, he got out of it without any damage at all. After a leadoff walk, Mark Ellis advanced to third base on a pair of groundballs. With Hanley Ramirez at the plate in a big spot, Gonzalez got ahead in the count 1-2, then tried to sneak a curveball around the outside corner. Ump Chad Fairchild wouldn't give him the call, but Gio went right back to the curveball on the next pitch and got Ramirez to whiff. Nicely done.
7:29 p.m. — Stop me if you've heard this one before: The Nats loaded the bases early and had an opposing starter on the ropes, only to squander the opportunity. They got a pair of walks and a Ryan Zimmerman single in the bottom of the first against Zack Greinke. That brought their hottest hitters (Jayson Werth and Ian Desmond) to the plate and they still couldn't convert. Werth got ahead in the count 2-0, took two strikes, then on a 3-2 pitch popped up to the catcher. Desmond capped it off by popping up to the second baseman, drawing boos from the crowd. Hard to blame fans for feeling that way right now about a Nats lineup that just cannot produce in big situations. Scoreless after one.
7:45 p.m. — A leadoff double for Chad Tracy (yes, that's not a mistake) in the bottom of the second, but the Nats still found a way to squander it. Wilson Ramos grounded out to the shortstop. Gio sac bunted Tracy to third. Span flied out to center. So two innings in, the Nats already are 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, 0-for-3 with a man on third. It's still scoreless after two.
7:52 p.m. — Yes, Yasiel Puig is an electric ballplayer. But the Nats pitching staff has really handled him well so far in this series. He's now 0-for-6 with three strikeouts after Gio busted him inside with a fastball in the top of the third. Nice job by Gonzalez through three scoreless innings tonight, including four strikeouts. Still 0-0 here.
8:09 p.m. — I really don't know what else to say, except: It happened again. Two on, one out in the third, and again nothing. Werth and Desmond each battled to a full count, but that means nothing if the results aren't there. The Nats already are 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, and we've only played three innings. Still 0-0.
8:31 p.m. — Well, at least nobody was in scoring position in the fourth when they failed to score. You just hope they're not going to waste what is shaping up to be another outstanding start by Gio. Scoreless through four.
8:39 p.m. — Zack Greinke tonight vs. Gio Gonzalez: 2-for-2. Everybody else in the Dodgers lineup vs. Gio Gonzalez: 1-for-15, 9 strikeouts. Excellent stuff from Gio through five scoreless.
9:00 p.m. — Make it 11 strikeouts for Gio, matching his career high. And he's only through six innings of what remains a 0-0 ballgame. It would be a travesty to waste this performance tonight.
9:11 p.m. — Tough decision for Davey in the bottom of the sixth. With two on and two out, the pitcher's spot came up. Gio was pitching an absolute gem, with only 98 pitches on his tally. But in a scoreless game, Davey had to try for the run, so he sent up Roger Bernadina to pinch-hit. And The Shark delivered, blooping a base hit to right to score Tracy (now 3-for-3!) with the night's first run. So it's 1-0 Nats after six, and now it's up to the bullpen to hold that lead. Drew Storen in for the seventh.
9:23 p.m. — And Storen gives the run right back. He got two quick outs, but then Skip Schumaker launched a double off the wall in right-center and Mark Ellis singled to left on an 0-2 pitch, tying the game 1-1. That elicited some boos from the sellout crowd of 41,816, though not as many as rained down after Storen threw his next pitch over Puig's head. Somehow, he got out of the inning, but that wasn't pretty. It's 1-1 at the stretch.
9:43 p.m. — And the frustration continues in the bottom of the seventh. Despite hits by Span and Zimmerman, the Nats couldn't score. Span was called out on a close play at second base when Rendon bunted (not a call I liked), and Davey argued vehemently with umpire Eric Cooper. Then Harper struck out against lefty Paco Rodriguez for the second straight night. And Werth grounded to short, with Zimmerman called out on another bang-bang play at second. So the Nats are now 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position tonight, 2-for-18 in the series. And it remains 1-1 as Tyler Clippard enters for the eighth.
9:58 p.m. — Man, talk about some tense moments in the top of the eighth. Clippard was on his way to a 1-2-3 inning, until Zimmerman airmailed a routine throw to first base for a two-base error. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that was his first throwing error in more than a month. It nearly came back to haunt the Nats after Clippard walked Ethier, but he battled back to get Carl Crawford to ground out and end the inning. Bottom of the eighth now, still 1-1.
10:20 p.m. — More frustration. The Nats had the opportunity to score the go-ahead run in the eighth but once again couldn't do it. They wasted Desmond's leadoff single and stolen base, which was followed by Tracy's productive out. But with Desmond on third and one out, Ramos walked, Scott Hairston struck out on a 2-2 fastball and Span flied out to left against lefty J.P. Howell. So if you've lost track, the Nats are now 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position tonight, 2-for-21 in the series. Onto the ninth, and here's Soriano pitching in a tie game. Where have we seen this before?
10:30 p.m. — And Soriano comes up big to strike out Puig (now 0-for-9 with five strikeouts in the series). Onto the bottom of the ninth, and it'll be Rendon, Zimmerman and Harper up for the Nats.
10:41 p.m. — And we're going to extra innings. Chris Withrow retires the side, ending it with a flourish: a 3-2 slider that completely froze Harper. Onto the 10th, and it'll be Craig Stammen out of the Nats bullpen.
11:04 p.m. — And the Dodgers immediately take the lead on Stammen, getting back-to-back doubles from Gonzalez and Ramirez. Stammen has now been scored upon in seven of his last 10 appearances, his worst stretch in more than two years. Ethier's sac fly off Ian Krol makes it 3-1 and really puts the Nats in a hole heading to the bottom of the 10th.
11:14 p.m. — And that will do it. The Nats lose 3-1 in 10 innings. I'd call this the most frustrating loss of the season, but there have been too many of those lately to rank them. They have, however, now lost seven of their last nine, falling below the .500 mark for the first time since June 19. And all they need to do to avoid the sweep tomorrow is beat Clayton Kershaw. Oof.

I'm starting to worry about Davey, seriously.

Davey missed the memo. He can only hit LHPs and doesn't do that well. That was a contact AB there.
It is amazing how long some of these games are, even when they are low scoring. We are almost at 3 1/2 hours....
What's with all the twirling of the bat by Span?
Yeah Sec 1.... Me too... He has never been this bad.... Or missed so many chances....
Luckiest foul off ever by Span....
I can't wait to hear Davey say "we'll get 'em tomorrow" in his presser....
Put in soriano and put us out of our.misery. gutless
The Nats are the Senators.
Carp: Davey trying everything his lineup will let him
Me: Wake up. No. Stop kissing up Carp.
Typical... But this is on DJ... He has made so many mistakes tonight... And of course, outside of 3 guys, the line up is ineffective....
Stranded 12 says it all....
HOW ARE THERE NOT 15,000 DECAPITATED BOBBLEHEADS RAINING ON THE FIELD?!?!?!?!??!?!
Well this sets up the walk off right?
...right? Someone?
:(
What is our ranking in LOB?
As golf analyst Dottie Pepper once said, (paraphrasing here) "...bunch of freaking choking dogs".
Feel like I have seen this movie before
span is worthless period
William O
was that Ed Stroud at bat
lol
I was sure Span would K.
Im mad as hell. Wish the hitters were.
Now 6 for 68 in last 9 game RISP.
THAT is as pathetic a stretch as any 2007-2009 stretch.
Nats may be the worst hitting team in all of MLB
the 2007 club had more heart
We got the sac fly at the wrong time... But again, why does DJ use Hairston... Should have had Lombo in...
Mattingly has out played DJ all night...
please don't pitch soriano in the 9th. He has sucked in tie ballgames this year
MNF, an out by Span does nothing with 2 outs. It was the pinch-hitter who had to make that contact. So disappointing. Desmond singles, steals 2nd and Tracy moves him to 3rd. Ramos walks.
Lets hope so David. But not holding breath
WHEW.
SWM
remember...its still to early for the LOD
My goodness why is Soriano not blowing these guys away. Gives up a hit when ahead. The punto hits one well.
This is getting real old
Im getting mad as hell....
Been nice if Span would have made contact, put the ball in play... But Hairston has got to get Desi home... No excuses...
But again, why the hell did DJ out him in there in the first place...
Go Natinals!
MNF
we have to hope Ted Lerner becomes Howard Beall
Did that ball go thru the net?
could there a slower pitcher in all of MLB than sorryano??? doubt it...so painful.
Lombo would have made contact...Davey simply a terrible manager now and the players know it
I think that last foul straight back stretched the net back and hit that woman sitting right behind the plate.
Puig vs Soriano. And Soriano throws A LOT of fastballs. Don't like this.
I feel Puig is due.
MNF
you may be right
I hope the Lerners paid their Metro deposit....
Not sure I like this match up.......nervous!
3 straight sliders to Puig. Nice.
What a K of Puig by Soriano! Now let's WALK-OFF!!!!
Blue was giving make up calls... Made Puig look foolish on that swing...
You think the game will go 18, WODL?
Ghost, what did you think of those first two calls to Puig?
OK...you think Nats can get 1 freaking run now????
Come on Bryce, give the people what the crave
Paul, those were 2 balls to Puig. No doubt about it.
Nah, let's get one of those game winning hits....
I think all 3 hit the same spot 2 inches outside.
NatsJack - that is the issue... Mattingly is managing this game like its October... DJ is managing like he doesn't care...
MrsB, I feel Davey is managing like his mind is somewhere else. It's sad to watch.
Pitchtrack had the strikes to Puig on the very edge of the black. Certainly not the worst calls tonight, and after the first one, you know that's a strike.
Those pitches to Puig were on the black but not on the plate.
He gave his girlfriend his ball....
Ghost - I'm seriously concerned... I've never seen DJ make this many mistakes... It's disconcerting...
But one hand I wonder if its his stubbornness... On another I wonder if its his loalty...
Either way, it's a lose-lose for the fans...
Babip has not been kind to Rendy lately....
Darn, Uribe playing no doubles defense. Rendon can't get any luck tonight with the bat.
"MrsB, I feel Davey is managing like his mind is somewhere else. It's sad to watch."
Maybe Davey is upset that Rizzo won't have a conversation about his future with the team.
Up to Harper! Let's Walk-off!
Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Ghost, appreciate the honesty, agree...we all just want consistency.
A Harper oppo-boppo HR would be nice too.
Mmm'kay.....
Harp just looked at it..
Looking? Seriously?
Backdoor slider fooled him. He was expecting something else.
Love seeing this team go down quietly in the 9th. No heart at all.
Looking forward to selling my Pirates tickets tomorrow.
Not even a swing. Bryce is no Manny machado.
Omg - swing Bryce!
Looking Ks piss me off seriously...
But this is why I would have rathered Abad pitch the 9th and save our closer....
But why Stammen... Why not Abad or Krol...
Harper thinking along that he's going to walk him. I guess not.
Davey not using the LHP once again. His boy Staymen.
Manny Machado's OPS+ is 117. Harper is 143. You're right, he is no Manny Machado. He's better (offensively).
See ball hit ball. That is what you need to keep in your head witg 2 strikes. You dont let it go. That is worthless.
Im mad as hell, i wish the hitters would get mad.
WTG David!
I agree.
Just what I expected from Staymen. Our 3rd baseman not in the no doubles defense. It's unreal.
Again... Why Stammen and no Abad/Krol....
These games are basically coin-flips.
I'm going to be sick.
Stop it proctor. To continue to make excuses for this team is just embarrassing. Tell Davey hi for me.
cool, bro. pack your effing bags, davey. you've worn out your welcome
Staymen does it! Lucky that wasn't a 450 foot shot it was such a poor pitch.
Way to go Davey!
Span had him played very poorly. Harper would have caught that ball.
I am going fishing tomorrow.
That's BS, WODL. The CF doesn't pick where they're positioned, the coaching staff does. Span played it as well as he could, but NOBODY was getting to that ball.
DJ lost this game for us....
Wow! The Dodgers can execute a sac bunt! Wish the hell we could do the same.
Davey now brings in the lefty. WTF I don't understand him. You know AGonz is your 1st batter! He's a lefty!
Then you have Ryan Zimmerman playing off the line!
Stammen looks like a loser just like this team....
Davey does stuff too little too late....
According to Soriano, the outfielders decide where to stand.
You Nats apologists here make me sick. We need to clean house, this team will go nowhere as is.
Hahahahaha. Player of the game Stammen. Now.we can go to bed. Another bad move by Davey. Hope hegets the flu
NatsJack, if Stammen has options, absolutely. He's been absolutely awful. What was Davey thinking?
Tom Schad @Tom_Schad 45s
With Ohlendorf excelling in long relief, Craig Stammen might be the odd man out when Ryan Mattheus returns. #Nats
Interesting thought.
You hope a 70 year old man gets the flu? Very classy, SWM. Very.
I'm beginning to think Stammen is hurt... That was a damn gopher right over the plate....
To the Dal he goes for Mattheus...
But again... WHY WAS HE IN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE... dJ just now going to Abad...
this sorry, no account team will not win until they face the Mets..Pirates will embarrass Nats
90 losses this year and if the Lerners raise ticket prices in 2014, they can go to hell
"What was Davey thinking"
Thats the problem, he wasnt thinking!
Who is the guy who decided that we were top-notch offensively? Rizzo, who dealt away our power hitter and brought in nothing to replace him except Tyler Moore.
Krol*
Just pathetic that Rizzo would put a team out there with nobody who can hit. Rizzo thinks Span and Tracey are great hitters and Hairston is the stop-gap.
Davey has alot of splaining to do. Peg another loss on Daveys nose.
Storen and Stamen. That's what davey chose. He's just not smart. This makes at least a dozen games he's lost us.
I hated him in bmore, hate him here. Quit ruining my teams davey!
It is hard to raise ticket prices anymore with Stubhub, Mick....
I also want to know why Zimmerman wasnt playing No Doubles.
My first question late in game why Zim off tge line. That allowed first double.
That made me real mad.
Stamnen has .allowedruns 4 of the 8 games he has pitched in July. Obviously he has become a problem, who needs to straightened up
Davey makes some mistakes. All managers do. What is he supposed to do when he has the worst offensive team in MLB?
we are seeing first hand all of Rizzo's garbage moves...
Nats have fallen back to 2007-2009 levels
That's an error? Uh...in what world?
Not that it matters, but...
Thats twice that if Zimmerman is playing no doubles defense he gets 2 easy plays for a 3rd baseman.
I remember earlier in the game when Zim made an error, Carp stated that the Nats lead the league, maybe all of MLB in errors. Thinking of that, watching poor execution by hitters in situations like a sac bunt attempt, generally not playing what Riggleman use to call a "clean game", makes me wonder does DJ and the coaching staff not put any emphasis on fundamentals? At times this team looks so disinterested.
The fans deserve better. They will stop coming. This crap is unwatcheable. Give it jp F P. Stop sugar coating everything. This team ia an absolute joke. It is an error. Shut up carp please.
Offensively:
Span is terrible
Suzuki is terrible
Espinosa was terrible
Tracey is terrible
None of the other guys is much better than average except Harper and he hasn't been the same since May. Our only hope is a Brave collapse.
At this point, Davey is a total has been, Rizzo an average GM at best, and the Nats are fast becoming the big bust of the year. Well, they already are. Nobody really thinks this team will come back, do they. Pathetic. I thought that they were at least mediocre. I was wrong. They flat out stink. Reverting to the form that they've always been. A collection of losers.
nats will go down like cowards in the 10th
This is what I am talking about with Span. We don't give up many runs. We can't afford a center fielder whose offensive production is 20 percent below the league average for an average player.
SWM
well stated, unfortunately
Watch how bad our at bats will be here. The worst thing about game 5 was the pathetic at bats we took in the bottom of the 9th.
NatsJack, what would you suggest Rizzo do?
The thing I will always remember about Gary Carter was his at bat with two outs against the Red Sox in game six. The Nats would have just given up.
Any other manager would have already been gone. Who cares about last year now. What a depressing team. No excitement. Just like watching grass grow
ummm.. that was definitely not "the worst thing about game 5"
Until this team plays like tgeir mad, this is going poorly quickly.
Zim ruin his great night by simply ignoring extra innings 101 .protect the lines.
mick said...

Only hope u didn't knock on wood.
Knox Rizzo can begin rebuilding for 2014...nothing he can do about 2013.
he must trade now the garbage on this team for prospects
Fizzle should politely tell Davey its not working. And don't let the door hit you on the way out.
That's 3 of Stammen's 8 appearances in relief this month where he has given up 2 or more runs.
When you pitch an inning at a time mostly and give up more than your starter, you are dog cr-p.
What does Davey see? Again, look what Mattingly did. No doubles defense and Rendon bashes one down the line and Uribe is standing on the line. Mattingly moves his relievers in and out situationally and Davey at least could've gone with ABad to start the 10th against the lefty leadoff.
Just poor managing by Davey but it could've been over in the 8th if Lombo was the pinch-hitter instead of Hairston.
Actually, it was. St. Louis came out with confidence in the 9th, like a great franchise. Washington came out like the 60's era Senators....
Looking again, really?
"We'll get 'em tomorrow...."
jayson Werthless tonight
Rizzo fundamentally misunderstood the mathematics of the Nats' batting order. We depended on getting a couple of guys on and then hitting homers. We were never good at bunching hits. When we lost Morse, we lost the heart and soul of our offense and ruined the clubhouse vibe. But at least Rizzo got to mold his team his way....
I guess that was Strike 3.
Have no problem AT ALL with Werth getting tossed now. Not like it'll matter.
Werth has to be Davey and fight for his team. Sad.
What the heck is there to discuss.... Really...
Another backwards k pathetic. Sit down Davey before you fall down. That was a strike. What a bunch of babies. Wow that wasn't a strike to Tracy though
This one hurts. No defense.
I had no problem with Harper getting tossed.
Nats have no heart or guts at all.
Ray being real tonight
Fire Davey. Sell at the deadline. Play with at least a modicum of pride in the final 3rd.
WODL hahaha. OMG IS RAY COMPLAING ABOUT THE UMPS. I hats everything about this years team. Bunch of cry baby's lead by a man who is foo stubborn to quit. More errors thank runs tonight. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Rizzo destroyed a franchise in less than 1 season
davey is terrible, i am sick of his whining voice now.
Lol Pedro.
F u jobu -- I do it myself.
Anybody gonna ask why stammen. Why hairston. Why span every damnable day.
Davey defending eck
I'll answer my question to NatsJack, what should Rizzo do? First of all we need to change our approach at bat and why it may not be deserved, I would fire Eck if for no other reason to shake things up and you can't fire 25 players. If Johnson isn't comfortable with that decision I would replace Johnson with Knorr. No one is irreplaceable in my opinion. I'd also consider replacing Spam as a lead off hitter and possibly bring up a Eury Perez or a Corey Brown to play CF. I would also look at acquiring another bat or two for the bench despite Tracy's and Bernadina's success tonight. Overall they have failed for most of the season. And last I would send Stammen to Syracuse when Matheus is ready to return to the roster.
It's not even a letdown. It's their norm. If they're lucky, they may beat their 2011 record. Probably not. Lacking in talent, desire, coaching, chemistry, you name it. A flawed, non contender. Rizzo does not deserve a new contract. Harper, this year, has been a bust. And so has his team. In the end, Harper may end up being an over hyped, slightly better than average player.
I'm ready to sue MLB.TV for showing me the same re-run 4 nights a week
Span, not Spam, although it may me appropriate.
