Game 89: Nats at Phillies

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
PHILADELPHIA — Hello from Citizens Bank Park, where the suddenly red-hot Nationals arrive for a four-game series with the Phillies, kicking off a seven-game road trip in advance of the All-Star break. The Nats, of course, are riding a four-game winning streak and have won 12 of their last 18, leaving them four games over .500 for the first time since mid-May. A win tonight would get them to five games over, matching their high-water mark of the season.

We've got an interesting pitching matchup for the series opener: Dan Haren vs. old pal John Lannan. Haren is making his return from the DL, and it's anybody's guess how he'll look tonight. He will be attempting to do something kind of cool tonight: If Haren wins, he'll become only the 13th pitcher in MLB history to have beaten all 30 current franchises.

The newly acquired Scott Hairston is expected to be here and in uniform for tonight's game, though I don't expect him to be in the lineup. Don't be surprised, though, if Davey Johnson finds a way to get the veteran outfielder in there tomorrow. Hairston's career numbers against Cole Hamels: 12-for-30, five doubles, five homers, 1.521 OPS.

Updates to come, so please check back...

7:08 p.m. — We are underway with a strike from John Lannan to Denard Span. My updates early in the game may be sparse, because there's plenty else going on that I'm still writing about, including Bryce Harper being named to compete in the Home Run Derby and the full reaction on the Scott Hairston trade. So please check the homepage for all of that.

7:29 p.m. — Not the first inning Dan Haren or the Nats wanted. He allowed three singles, issued two walks (one with the bases loaded), uncorked a wild pitch and was in trouble from the very beginning. That Haren somehow got out of all that allowing only two runs is perhaps a minor miracle. Regardless, this is not a particularly good sign for the veteran right-hander. Nats trail 2-0 after one.

7:49 p.m. — Better stuff from Haren in the second, though he needed a great play by Ian Desmond to get Jimmy Rollins. The Nats, meanwhile, have put one runner on against John Lannan so far. Still 2-0 after two.

8:07 p.m. — Haren remains rocky, having now allowed five hits and three walks in only three innings. But he's allowed only the two early runs, so he's managed to keep this thing within reach. Of course, Lannan has retired nine of 10 batters faced so far, the lone exception a Jayson Werth infield single. Still 2-0 after three.

8:20 p.m. — The Nats put three men on base in the fourth against Lannan, yet didn't score. Why? Because Harper was thrown out trying to steal second, with an awkward-looking, feet-first, late slide into the base perhaps contributing. You have to wonder if that's a case of Bryce trying to protect his knee, sliding in a manner he's not accustomed to. That mistake prevented the bases from being loaded for LaRoche, though it probably wouldn't have mattered because LaRoche grounded out sharply to second on the first pitch he saw to end the inning. So it remains a 2-0 game moving to the bottom of the fourth.

8:26 p.m. — Well, Haren has now retired six in a row and he's now through the fourth still having allowed only the two first-inning runs. It's been an eventful night already for the right-hander. He's got six strikeouts, but he's also allowed five hits and three walks. He's at 73 pitches, and you wonder if Davey might just give him one more inning and call it a night.

8:32 p.m. — So, the same Nats lineup that has scored 56 runs over its last eight games has now been shut out for five innings by John Lannan. Still 2-0.

8:43 p.m. — Somehow, Haren has made it through five innings and has still allowed only the two runs. He got a big strikeout of Darin Ruf to end the fifth with two men on. At 95 pitches, you have to wonder if Davey will just be happy with what he got from his starter and hand the rest of this game to his bullpen.

8:52 p.m. — That will indeed do it for Haren. His final line: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 95 pitches, 59 strikes. Fernando Abad enters for the bottom of the sixth of what still remains a 2-0 deficit.

9:18 p.m. — We're going to the eighth here, it's now 3-0 after Abad gave up a run in the sixth. The Nats still haven't done anything against Lannan, who has taken the mound for the eighth with a shutout still intact.

9:25 p.m. — In six-plus seasons with the Nationals, Lannan pitched eight-plus innings of scoreless ball only once: a 2009 shutout of the Mets. Well, he's done it tonight, allowing four hits over eight sparkling innings. He got a standing ovation as he walked off the mound just now, the Phillies still leading 3-0 and the Nats down to their last three outs.

9:33 p.m. — Ninth inning upcoming. It's Jonathan Papelbon vs. Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth, the Nats still trailing 3-0.

9:48 p.m. — That's it. The Nats did threaten against Papelbon. Harper singled, Zimmerman doubled and Werth came a few feet shut of a game-tying homer but had to settle for a sac fly. LaRoche also lofted a sac fly. Chad Tracy then made the final out, so the Nats lose 3-2.

Forty-two pitchers by Haren. And none has left the park.

Yet.

Is that some sort of personal best?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

A goose egg for the inning for Dan Haren... Progress....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I was close 17 and 0.

WODL i have learned we balance out as you are negative as I am positive.

Jane Elizabeth said...

I don't think anybody wants to suck....

You are on pretty firm footing there, although I saw a movie once about an owner who wanted her team to suck....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I was off by 1 pitch.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

MASN needs to institute the pitch count counter...

Jane Elizabeth said...

I am mostly negative about Haren, and about Span on the road. Span has at least been good at home and in the field. Haren would be a better pinch hitter than pitcher.

Amr Khani said...

MrsB, I agree and actually sent an email to MASN about it. They responded right away and said they would consider it. A few more people asking may help move that along.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I email that all the time.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Pitty-pat contact today....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Where all the hitters from last 8 games go (i guess the batch from the ,2 Brewers losses showed up)

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Just saw where Mark wrote that Rizzo isn't looking to make more trades...

That disappointing, to me, as we can't keep getting on a role for 3/4 days/games and then when the 13 mil pitcher comes in, things go to hell in a hand basket...

We can't sustain with only 3 of our pitchers carrying us...

Amr Khani said...

MASN broadcasts aren't the greatest. Haren's at-bat was actually pretty good...

Jane Elizabeth said...

We are going to hear how great Haren was if he only gives up 4 or so runs but the problem is that he puts us behind the 8 ball immediately....

David Proctor said...

What Rizzo says and what Rizzo does are often completely different things. Take what he says with a grain of salt.

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

I doubt whether Haren gets out of this inning.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Umps love it when struggling pitchers do that. They know that it is time to cut them a break on the close calls....

MrsB loves the Nats said...

That was a K.... Come on blue... He gave Lannan a pitch off the plate to Ramos...

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Haren has good movement back. Note to Barksdale that's it's not where Ramos catches it, it's where the ball crosses the plate.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Who battedfirst? Our hitters could have put us ahead first, but didnt . You are focusing one guy focus on all of them.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Nice play by Span on a hard hit ball to center....

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

Question to all questioning the home plate ump:

Why would ANY umpire give a call to Haren at this point?

Drew said...

Get him out of there.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

David.... Haren got the pitch going there...

Jane Elizabeth said...

Haren doesn't need to give up homers to give up runs. His whip is going to be high.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Since you Harper is a better center fielder would he have caught that?

Jane Elizabeth said...

Already 8 guys on base for the Phils, if I count right, through 3 innings. It is only the K's that are saving him so far.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Just call it whete it is. i could care less who is tgrowing or any other pitch.

Jane Elizabeth said...

High whip with lots of K's and walks indicates a high pitch count....

Jane Elizabeth said...

1 hit in 4 innings for us and not a very good one, even....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

As I said had Ramos tgrown out Revere and ump correctly call a swing tge score right now is 0-0.

But score could be 4-0 without Ks

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

MNF, do you blame Suzuki when he doesn't throw a perfect strike to nail a runner stealing?

Jane Elizabeth said...

Harper is not confident about his fielding now. I know if he had tried that it would have been deemed too risky by the folks who always bash Harper.

jeffwx said...

Det had a 2.76 ERA before his injury.
I could not disagree more with you, NL. In my mind, i think you may be cherry picking stats but even by above avg stats you quote, he's done well a majority of the time.
We can't have Stras/zimm/gio for our number5starters as well.
I guess we must disagree which is what makes this game so much fun.

Jane Elizabeth said...

We can't hit this guy, Lannan. Maybe we could buy him.

jeffwx said...

NL, if you can do a blog analysis on the best/worst back of the rotation pitchers in the NL, I think that would be an excellent article.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

If he had one there on time I would, but the runners easily beat the throws.

In case the runner was not close.

I can guarentee when the throw is the problem for Suzuki I will be equal.

David Proctor said...

That was bizarre. He slid fine yesterday.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Had Ramos threw where Ruiz did it was an easy out on Revere.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

He slid a little lare, that happens probably more than we know.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Yes MNF, we got your point on the steal attempt the 1st and 2nd and now the 3rd time.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

And LaRoche after a walk is 1st pitch swinging. Come on guys!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I am only doing it bacause people are laying all the blame on Haren.

He is bad enough without throwing other players poor play that cost runs in too.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

I hate first pitch swinging... Especially after the guy before you walks...

Ugh!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Just like Zim yresterday swinging after Harper's walk yesterday.

Secret wasian man said...

2 runs by Haren. 3 stinking hits against Lannan and bad base running. I'm off Haren. This team can just not sustain anything. Hence a record always hovering around .500

jeffwx said...

Compared to pre-DL Haren, he has been amazing so far.

Jane Elizabeth said...

please let him win this game and then retire....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

It isn't over

Holden Baroque said...

Well, cheer up, folks. Imagine what the Phillies fans are saying. "We've got two crummy runs off THIS GUY??"

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

MNF, should we blame Harper for not getting that foul ball hit by Revere?

Secret wasian man said...

Boy I hop our bats don't go cold. Haren pitching well enough to win.

jeffwx said...

Harp would have had that foul ball if he didn't get a call from Boras recently.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

If you wasnt to

David Proctor said...

They'll only say that if they lose, Sec 3. A lot is forgiven and forgotten if you win.

Jane Elizabeth said...

1-2-3!

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Wow, a 1-2-3 inning for Haren.

jeffwx said...

No Ghost, we should credit Haren for 1-2-3 inning.

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

Pigs fly. The Cubs win the World Series. Republicans are kind to kids and puppies. And Dan Haren is going to see a fifth inning.

Which one of those sentences are true?

Jane Elizabeth said...

I do believe I have the vapors....

David Proctor said...

The Nats have always had issues with these soft tossers. Even last year. I don't really get it.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Great inning by Haren... Maybe the first inning was him lifting the rust... He has done well since...

Need some offense guys... Lets do this!

jeffwx said...

owe you one, Ghost

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

3 up 3 down.

Where are the hitters from the Padres series?

Jane Elizabeth said...

You can't go ruining your body before you are arbitration eligible...

NatsLady said...

>NL, if you can do a blog analysis on the best/worst back of the rotation pitchers in the NL, I think that would be an excellent article.

Thanks for the idea! I will do that, maybe late this week or during the All-Star Break. I get pretty bored with our boys not playing...

Jane Elizabeth said...

Fish 1-0.

David Proctor said...

Some of you guys are really cynical

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

jeffwx said...
No Ghost, we should credit Haren for 1-2-3 inning.

I'm not cursing Haren so not sure what you mean. As I said at 8:02, Haren has good movement on his pitches.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Marlins up 1-0 on the Barves

Holden Baroque said...

They'll only say that if they lose, Sec 3. A lot is forgiven and forgotten if you win.

So what you're telling me is, Nats fans are worse than Phillies fans? Ouch.

David Proctor said...

Ramos hit that ball hard.

jeffwx said...

Now, I think you owe me one Ghost, I already credited you for crediting Haren.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Come on guys Lannen is not pitching hard. Slow your bats down to time the pitch.

baseballswami said...

If you have been a fan for a long time, don't you find this game to be quite ironic? I mean, on so many levels?

Secret wasian man said...

I am stunned the Nats aren't even coming close to hitting Lannan. 2 hits? Wow. Totally not adjusting.

Jane Elizabeth said...

We already lost to Lannan and the Phils this year in Philly, even though he didn't get the decision. We seem not to hit well against guys who lack stuff....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

That are not timing his pitchrs at all.

We are at the point Haren has had problems.

Smatt1001 said...

Swami, yes very very ironic

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

SWM, Nats are getting chances. Running mistake by Bryce then 2 on for LaRoche and he goes 1st pitch swinging instead of waiting for his pitch.

Secret wasian man said...

Braves tied game

MikeinDC said...

Anyone else noticing Haren dropping lower on his back leg? Don't know if the pause is longer. It seems to be helping him with control and the sinker. Would love for him to find it this year!

Jane Elizabeth said...

Another Charlie Brown duck move....

Secret wasian man said...

I have noooooooooo problem with Haren since the first. Our bats have gone back to April. Impatient at bats. And once again Bryce makes a bonehead play. But the kid ALWAYS gets a pass. Not loving Bryce of late. Not doing much.

David Proctor said...

LOL. Bryce goes 3/4 yesterday with 2 stolen bases and people are turning on him. I've never seen a fanbase as Jekyl and Hyde as this one.

Eugene in Oregon said...

It wasn't particularly pretty, but Dan Haren has done all that can be expected for his first start after the DL. Turn it over to the bullpen. But, more importantly, turn it over to the offense (i.e., they need to step up and score some runs).

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Why g9 3-0 on Michael Young? That started a poor pitch sequence. Cost at least 10 pitches.

Secret wasian man said...

Everybody knows Hren was a mistake. But this one is on the hitters. Or lack there of.

Joe Seamhead said...

Five innings, 2 runs. Haren is doing his job. Time to focus at the plate, and have a big inning.

Secret wasian man said...

Not turning on Bryce. But when you screw up you should be called out on it. FP spends 2 minutes explaining the bad steal.

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

Remember, LannEn can hit a wall at any time.

BigCat said...

Ok .... Haren got thru it with smoke and mirrors. Now lets go to the pen before the dike breaks

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Some really bad at-bats. Span 0-3 with 3 easy rollers to 2nd base.

David Proctor said...

Desmond 2 K's...

phil dunton said...

IMO, Desmond hits better when he bats lower in the order.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Now's the Nats chance to tie this up.

David Proctor said...

Well Phillies bullpen sucks at least.

BigCat said...

You gotta make lannan throw strikes. He is vulnerable early in count cause he looks to get ahead and once he gets ahead he is very good at nibbling with different speeds

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Nats can't piece together hits and they have had opportunities.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Bad hands by Ramos lately....

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

With Haren out of the game, time to give him some props for a good job. His 1st inning was shakey but the rest was good.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Ramos held onto the ball that time....

Jane Elizabeth said...

Not a backflip....

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Haren with a decent game... He gave us the 5 innings that we wanted.... Game is still manageable...

Come on Nats Bats!!!

Jane Elizabeth said...

If you think Haren was good, you have a very low bar for measurement. He was in trouble constantly and it is never helpful to get hammered in the first inning. I will grant that at least the game wasn't over when he left and that is new. Maybe that is what you mean....

mick said...

I thought Haren did a good job....hopefully Nats can get some runs

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Seems for the past week, the first reliever in has not done a scoreless job.

Also notice we are pulling was too many of tgese hits.

Jane Elizabeth said...

We have to beg Miami to bail us out. I am happy for John Lannan, however. It couldn't happen to a better guy.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Ben Revere is batting over 35 points more than Denard Span. Wouldn't have thought that. Revere is the difference maker tonight.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Haren did little or nothing different today from what he has done in the past. At least, he will be tagged with the loss and not someone less deserving of having a bad record.

Knoxville Nat said...

Okay so totally off topic (tonight's game) but yesterday afternoon I find myself having to run to the local mall. It's raining like crazy and the closest parking space was outside JC Penney. So I run into the store finding myself in children's clothing section, and the first thing I see is a child's tee shirt with a Nike swoosh and on the front it says "trade me or play me". No kidding!

Secret wasian man said...

0 runs on j LAN???? Get off Haren please.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Another plus tonight, no Haren HRs. A lot of weak contact actually.

Unknown said...

mick, agree, this is not on Haren, if you can only get 3 hits off of Lannan, you have no business winning a MLB game, period.

John said...

Harper gave up on that foul ball with ten feet to spare! I thought nothing was going to change the way he plays the game!.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

2 runs could have been 0 could have been 4.

What I mean by good did he keep us in game. He did.

Hitters hae gone back to trying to pul everything mode.

Our hitters are more inconsistent than our starters are for sure.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Umm... Didn't Lannan pitch here last year? Seems like he did, and didn't Rizzo decide that he would rather pay triple for someone worse? Umm... Yeah.

So, I think I will stay on Haren until he pitches better than the guy whose job he stole at thrice the pay....

phil dunton said...

Never recall Lannan pitching this effectively when he was on the Nats.

Eugene in Oregon said...

Knoxville Nat @ 9:06 p.m.,

Having lived in Nike-land for three years now, I can assure you that nothing Nike -- or Phil Knight as an individual -- does surprises me.

David Proctor said...

He pitched this well as a member of the Nats many, many times. Of course, he also had many clunkers. Just as he's had this year.

mick said...

agreed Paul....

Nats bats are taking a night off it appears

Jane Elizabeth said...

I recall Lannan pitching quite well and beating both the Braves and the Phils last year when we were desperate. There is no excuse for Rizzo's bone-headed signing of Haren.

David Proctor said...

The hell, Ramos?

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Come on Ryan, take charge.

David Proctor said...

"There is no excuse for Rizzo's bone-headed signing of Haren."

Sure there is. They've been rehashed repeatedly here.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Harper could have run in from LF to catch that ball at homeplate. Corner infielders have to take charge of those.

Knoxville Nat said...

Stupid me, got it backwards. It read "Play me or trade me". Old age kicking in I guess.

mick said...

are Marlins teasing us?..1-1 in 8th verse Braves

David Proctor said...

The Marlins have actually played very well over these past few weeks. Not rollovers.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Every pitcher has his day, once in a while. Unfortunately for us, Lannan has had two good outings against us while Haren who garners incredible amounts of praise on here, is headed for 4-10 with and E.R.A. of 6.00 and a whip of 1.47. And his whip tonight was actually higher than his season average.

But yeah, he pitched great otherwise....

Section 222 said...

Oh come on FP! The Red Porch is one of the best views in baseball? What a goof.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Pitching isn't the problem tonight....

mick said...

David...that is true and Nats will have to play well verse them before the break

Unknown said...

Try 5 times more

David Proctor said...

LOL. Scott Feldman, who the Orioles traded for, has given up 7ER today.

Alphabet Soup Erik said...

Very happy for Lannan...karma is a bitch, hey Rizzo? Hope he finishes this thing. If the Nats fail to make the playoffs it will be because of Mike Rizzo. Period.

mick said...

good job by Ohlendorf

Jane Elizabeth said...

Span is better than Ben Revere.

Knoxville Nat said...

But Eugene, how the heck would he have gotten them into stores so quick? That is what surprised me.

mick said...

the one positive tonight is Haren...if he can give that effort from here on out, then Nats, assuming they will hit should be in good shape.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Yeah, Lombo!

BigCat said...

Is it me or is FP starting to sound like Theisman. Come on man That is a frickin pop up. Catch the ball Ramos or take off the gear. Ramos a terrible throw to 3rd screwed Haren. Also, it looked liked Ramos came 6 feet away from the plate to take werth's throw. If he hangs in there and plants that left foot the runner is probably out

mick said...

I posted this morning that I thought Lombo could be a good hitter off the bench

Jane Elizabeth said...

Pitching is always the problem when you lose, as is hitting. A good pitcher might have shut out the Phils tonight. A Haren only gave up 2, so that shows just how pathetic the Philles hitters were tonight.

David Proctor said...

Desmond having a bad day. These games will happen. The trend is still positive. I've had this one down as a loss for days.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Let's face it. We are fortunate when our catchers can suit up and not get hurt. If you expect them to start tagging guys out at home and catching pop-ups and throwing out baserunners, well.....

mick said...

Mick is trying to be positive here...I did not ever see the Nats being shut out tonight, after this weekend.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Span is better than Ben Revere.

Yes, on defense according to Fangraphs. Revere is hitting better and stealing bases and causing havoc.

Section 222 said...

Should have PH Hairston for Span. Couldn't have hurt anyway.

I can't believe Lannan has shut out the hot hitting Nats for 8 innings. That is just depressing.

mick said...

oh well...Go marlins!

Faraz Shaikh said...

alright world isn't ending tonight. let's be respectable until the end tonight and get them tomorrow.

mick said...

would like too see Nats get at least 1 run tonight..that would ease the sting

Jane Elizabeth said...

Span has a higher OPS+ than Revere. If you platooned Span and played him against righties, you would have an excellent player for 2/3 of your games.

Jane Elizabeth said...

I think Hairston missed the midnight train....

mick said...

Brewers lead Reds 4-2 in 5th...see, i got my eye on the wild card, lol

Jane Elizabeth said...

Kudos to John Lannan. You are a real mensch. I wish we still had you.

mick said...

Nats came in 19-24 on the road... I would be happy with a 2-2 split with Phillies

Jane Elizabeth said...

Miami keeps blowing opportunities.

Section 222 said...

Hairston is in the dugout.

Carp: (paraphrase) If the Phils are out of it, there will be some interest in Nix and Frandson at the deadline. Guys who can come in and get pinch hits are valuable.

Not from the Nats though. We're happy with Chad Tracy.

mick said...

I know William O...got my eye on that game too

Jane Elizabeth said...

It is a shame because we have been getting closer to baseball respectability, that is, a positive run differential, but we gave back several yesterday and 3 today, and those couple with 2 outs against the Mets when it was 13-0.

mick said...

I would think Davey, Cat and team will be pretty up beat about Haren tonight...

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

mick said...

How's about a 4 run Nats rally?

BigCat said...

I love my nats, but I am happy for lannan. The thing that rizzo has to learn is that there is more than the radar gun in pitching. There is heart, smarts, changing speeds etc. Also, Lannan was a home grown Nat and Rizzo shit on him for the sexier Jackson and recently the 13 million dollar disaster in Haren.

mick said...

agreed Ghost..that would be nicer, lol

phil dunton said...

Can't wait for the Nats to face H-Rod. He'll probably strike out the side!

Jane Elizabeth said...

10 base-runners and 1 wild pitch for Haren, which is basically right in line with his season average. The ball doesn't seem to be carrying tonight, so maybe we need to check the humidity before we let him pitch.

I know tomorrow that we are going to hear over and over and over about how great Haren was and how it wasn't his fault and about how brilliant Rizzo was to bring him in and then to bring him back.

The underlying stats seem to tell the true story, however.

Secret wasian man said...

Just when you think the 2012 nats are back, they go out and lay a big fat egg.

Maybe you weren't posting here 2 years ago but wonder where everyone was when I was saying the same.

Remember that Friends episode where Joey tries to speak French? I could see someone being upbeat about Haren's performance when judged in that sense.

Hey, little buddy. Good job. You only gave up 2 runs and loaded the bases in the 1st inning. You only ended the game with a whip of 1.45....

Only 2nd extra base hit of the game....

There's your run, Mick!

Werth just missed that.

BigCat, how much of Lannan's departure was Rizzo and how much did Johnson have to do with it? I'm thinking it was both of them but you make a good point about Rizzo's love of the power arms.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Now, how about 3 more!

Jane Elizabeth said...

2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and nobody on for Miami.

Ghost, you had plenty of company on the Lannan fan club. Not me, but you weren't alone by any means.

Matt Purke gave up 9 earned runs in 3.2 innings, driving his ERA over 10.

Yikes.

Jane Elizabeth said...

I guess you go ahead and score there.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Where was this fight all game?

Section 222 said...

Tracy with another chance to tie a game in the 9th with a PH homer. Hmm.

Section 222 said...

Oh well.

come on marlins.

Jane Elizabeth said...

This one is on Rizzo.

Why in the flying hell do you put Chad Tracy on the game...

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

On a 2-0 pitch where Papelbon seemed to be OK with a walk to Tracy he swings under it instead of taking strike 1.

David Proctor said...

Werth was a few feet away from tying it. We showed fight. All you can ask. The offense isn't gonna be there every night and we struggle against Lannan-type pitchers. I'm not going to write off two weeks of better offensive production because of one game. Let's go Fish.

I like the fight in the 9th inning and mentally, Nats know they can hit Papplebom the rest of the series

Jane Elizabeth said...

Because Tracy hit a homer off him in another game.

C'mon mick. What are you on? We lost. We lost to a sub .500 team with a pitcher we couldn't wait to dump. Blahhh loss is a loss. You play the game to win the game.
