Really, though, lineup construction is less about who hits where and more about who is hitting at all. So the best hope for the Nationals' run-scoring abilities moving forward is the simple fact they've got a complete, healthy lineup in place (including Bryce Harper and Wilson Ramos) for the first time since mid-April.
That lineup will try to keep things going tonight against the Padres, who send hard-throwing right-handed Andrew Cashner to the mound. Gio Gonzalez, who has been fantastic lately, gets the ball for the Nats, trying to put his team two games over the .500 mark again.

7:07 p.m. — We are underway on a very warm Friday night in the District. Gio Gonzalez starts off Everth Cabrera with a fastball for strike one.
7:20 p.m. — The bad news: Gio's first-inning struggles continue. He allowed a pair of doubles, to Chris Denorfia and Chase Headley, bringing home the night's first run and putting the Nats in an early 1-0 hole. The good news: Gonzalez has shown he can quickly bounce back from those rocky starts this season. His first-inning ERA is now 5.50. After that, it drops to 2.59.
7:26 p.m. — A 1-2-3 bottom of the first for Andrew Cashner, including a weak grounder to second off the bat of Bryce Harper. That leaves Harper 0-for-15 since his dramatic homer on his first swing back from the DL on Monday. Obviously, he's still getting his timing all the way back after the long layoff. Still 1-0 Padres after one.
7:40 p.m. — More trouble for Gio in the top of the second. He had runners on second and third with nobody out, but he then escaped the jam with back-to-back-to-back strikeouts. Nicely done.
8:06 p.m. — Holy moly, the Nats bats are back out in full force tonight. They just put up a 5-spot on Cashner in the bottom of the second. And all three outs were well-struck. The highlights: Wilson Ramos picked up right where he left off yesterday, delivering a two-run single, making him 4-for-5 with 7 RBI now since his return from the DL. Denard Span smoked a two-run double into the right-field corner to keep the rally going. Ian Desmond actually drew a walk (shocking, I know). And Harper just got under a ball a tad, just missing a grand slam, instead settling for a sac fly to deep center. So it's 5-1 now as the new-look Nats lineup continues to rake.
8:14 p.m. — Chase Headley is a one-man wrecking crew tonight, doling out some serious punishment on Gio. He doubled in a run in the first and now he just crushed a solo homer to left in the third, trimming the Nats' lead to 5-2.
8:30 p.m. — Ramos. Again. A run-scoring single in the third makes it 6-2 and makes Wilson 5-for-6 with eight RBI since his return. For comparison's sake, Ramos now has eight RBI in 1 1/3 games, the same number of RBI Kurt Suzuki had over his previous 23 games. Unreal.
8:55 p.m. — Make it 8-2 Nats after four innings. If you've lost track, here are their run totals over the last six days: 13, 10, 0, 1, 8, 8. I seriously think they're incapable of scoring three or four runs on a single night.
9:13 p.m. — Gio has really settled into a nice groove now after a somewhat shaky start to his evening. He's retired eight straight and isn't giving the Padres any reason to think they can claw their way back into this game. It remains 8-2 in the middle of the sixth.
9:32 p.m. — What was that I was saying about clawing back? The Padres are starting to do just that after Carlos Quentin murdered a fastball from Craig Stammen with two outs in the seventh. That three-run blast just trimmed the lead to 8-5. Gio's final line: 6.2 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR, 110 pitches, 70 strikes. Solid, though he's certainly been better in recent starts.
9:50 p.m. — Tyler Clippard puts out the fire. We move to the bottom of the eighth, still 8-5.
10:05 p.m. — That's your ballgame. Rafael Soriano closes out an 8-5 victory, the Nats' second straight and seventh in their last 11 games. And with the Braves having now lost three in a row, the deficit in the NL East is back down to five games.

NL--I'd say they are going to handle Ramos with kid gloves for a couple weeks here. Make sure that hammy stays nice and stretched without barking or worse.
I actually liked it when they were rotating, it seemed to get the best from both at the plate. I wouldn't mind seeing this for a while and real gradually switch over.
Following up on the last thread, here's another gymnast throwing a first pitch. Apparently it's in Japan because the actual pitcher who takes the mound when she's done is none other than Yu Darvish!

Cashner is legitimately good. Hope we can get to him. We've got Gio, Strasburg and JZimm in this series. Padres are a pesky team, but if we don't win at least 2/3, it'll be a disappointment.

The bullpen is interesting right now. Storen has an ERA of over 5. Mattheus will be back. Presumably, Garcia will be in there at some point. Who leaves? Abad and Krol have both been very good.
I think Suzuki catches JZimm tomorrow. They seem to be perfect together (which is interesting since they were awful together last year).

Maybe if you package Espinosa and Storen, two underachieving but very high upside guys together...you get something of at least a little value? I still doubt it, to be honest.
David, teams do it because they are desperate. Look no further than the Boston Red Sox. I agree with Nats128 that you only do it if the return is a good prospect.
David, Espinosa is worth a low level prospect and not worth trading. Espi is more valuable this team as a shortstop if anything happened to Desi.
I seriously doubt any team is desperate enough to make Drew Storen their closer in his current funk. If he can't get it together, he'll have to join Espi in the minors until he does. Rizzo won't want to trade him with his value in a valley.
222, I would think it has to do with what GM's around baseball perceive his problem to be. That perception may be quite different from what we've all been speculating on these past few days. And Rizzo might be able to talk to them frankly about it, which he can't do to us.
Of course, knowing his great respect for us, he probably would tell us the truth if he could do so in private, but since anybody can lurk on a blog...
NCNatsie, that is correct. Other GMs believe they can change a player and it usually begins with the change of scenery.
Rizzo is probably already receiving phone calls but he won't let him go for garbage and the same goes for Espi.

Sure, and as an offseason acquisition, I can easily see a team wanting him. But mid-season, with his head and his mechanics who knows where, to trade for him, and make him the closer? Not gonna happen.
Would a team take him for nothing and put him in its bullpen somewhere? Sure. But not as closer. But Rizzo won't take nothing anyway, as you say.
On June 1 before beating the Nats, Tim Hudson had a 5.37 ERA.
He will be 38 years old in a week from Sunday. Do you think he has any value? He ERA is now 4.22

Totally. He's only 25, not too expensive, and in our control for a while. The fact that he went 17 consecutive appearances with just one earned run shows that he's got great upside.

When there is a large crowd, why is there always a few sections in the lower section (not the Lexus section) thst are empty of about 200-300 seats together?
Those people are probably inside the nice air-conditioned club watching the game, instead of out in the heat. I'd prefer to be out there super close, but alas. I can't afford those seats.
What a turnaround. After the first inning I was giving Cashner 7 innings and Gio maybe 5.1, if Gio could get his pitch count down.

Went to Opening Day '71 expecting to see Denny Mclain pitch the game (we bought tickets not too long after the trade) but ol' Bob Short pitched Dick Bosman and garnered another good crowd when he pitched against the White Sox a few days later.
Against a great Vida Blue, the Seantors won 8-0 on eight hits.
I think that was the year he won the Cy Young.
Your right, McClain pitched his opener verse Chisox ona Friday night...I was there...Denny went 9 innings and won 5-4 on a walk off pinch hit homer by ex White Sox Tommy McCraw in the bottom of 9th.
Blue won 17 ina row after the opening day loss verse Senators and was 17-3 at all star break

Gio is responsible for 8 RBI in last 2 games. It's been a pretty big difference. He won't keep this up, but it's a significant addition.

Knoxville: Lineups are strange things -- one person can change a lineup, or just a change in the lineup itself can make The difference. Each slot in the order has a different job or duty to do and each one feels differently to each player. Players actually hit better in a certain spot. Who knows why? Setting the perfect lineup is almost a mystical exercise. But we've had both added players AND changed the lineup: Opposing pitchers are having difficulty pitching to this order -- anyway it works!! don't change it
Espi isn't 6 for his last ten. If he started 6/70, that would mean before his 6/10 he was 0/for his first 60. And I know he was hitting 150 at some point on his way to .088.

I'm not sure that Headley is actually an "alum", I think he may have left after 3 years.
So if this 6 run lead holds through the 7th...I'd put Storen in for the 8th. It's as low a leverage situation as you can get, and he needs to get back out there and try to fix whatever is wrong.
I found it funny when people accused Werth of exploiting his contract or his ego to get moved to the 2 spot over Rendon. It's funny because Werth has been fairly vocal that he doesn't like the 2 spot, but did it because Davey thought it was best for the team.

I think some will get on Davey for pulling Gio, but to be honest, he'd thrown 119 pitches last time out. He was at 110. Stammen has struggled, it was a good spot to bring him in against a RHH. Thankfully we still have a decent lead.

Dick Bosman was one of my coaches growing up and just a great guy...was one of my coaches for roughly 5+ years & learned alot from him and boy, did he have some good stories...my legion team even had the pleasure of being invited to play some semi-pro teams in Newfoundland when we were all 18 or so and Boz was a big part of making that happen...you can imagine the fun we had.
p.s. I still have my infielders glove that Boz re-stitched himself...he was so appalled at the condition of my glove that he made me hand it over and it's still like brand new, some 25+ years later...really a wonderful guy and someone I looked up to and learned alot from.
Of course our last 9 hitters have been out, so we have this bad habit of relaxing.
I agree with DJ pulling Gio... It could have been a bad night by Gio but he made the adjustments and got going...

Many, many years ago was watching a friend of mine play in the Industrial League at Cabin John Regional Park. About the fifth inning or so this gentleman sat down near me and he looked familiar so I asked if he used to play for the Senators. He acknowledged that he did and introduced himself as Dick Bosman. We talked for several minutes and I kept thinking to myself, what a class act this guy is.

I think Stammen is injured, tbh. You don't pitch nearly 1.5 spectacular years and then just implode like this. (Well it's possible, but I doubt it). Something is up.
