Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER |
The big question was who would hit second in front of Harper. The answer: Jayson Werth, who was supposed to bat there all along but was pressed into middle-of-the-order duties with Harper out. That means Anthony Rendon gets bumped all the way down to the 7-hole, though that's not necessarily the worst place for a rookie who after a fantastic debut has cooled off considerably in recent days, carrying a 1-for-18 slump into tonight's game.
It also helps to have Jordan Zimmermann on the mound in search of his NL-leading 12th win. He'll be facing a Brewers club that currently sits in last place in the NL Central, losers of five straight including a 14-inning, rain-delayed game yesterday in Pittsburgh.
Updates to come, so please check back...

7:06 p.m. — We are underway on a sticky, 80-degree night in the District as Jordan Zimmermann fires a fastball to Norichika Aoki for ball one.
7:10 p.m. — And Zimmermann slices through the top of the Brewers lineup like a hot knife through butter. It took him only 10 pitches (7 strikes) to retire the side on a couple of groundballs to the right side and a strikeout. Nice play by Anthony Rendon, who charged way to his left to field Aoki's drag bunt and then flipped it straight from his glove to Adam LaRoche. I'm guessing that's not a play Rendon has practiced much, but he certainly looked comfortable doing it.
7:22 p.m. — Well, I guess this Harper kid might be kind of decent. First at-bat off the DL: Opposite-field homer. Nationals Park erupted and didn't let up until Bryce took a curtain call. Just like on Opening Day. The Nats lead 1-0 as Harper makes his presence known immediately and with authority.
7:36 p.m. — Zimmermann did surrender a base hit in the second, but otherwise cruised again, striking out Juan Francisco to end the frame. He's thrown 17 of 21 pitches for strikes. The Nats lineup, meanwhile, hasn't done much of anything against Yovani Gallardo aside from Harper's homer. Still 1-0 after two.
8:09 p.m. — Sweet. Fancy. Moses. The Nationals suddenly have the most productive lineup in baseball! (Either that, or Yovani Gallardo, Brandon Lyon and Anthony Recker just really stink.) Whatever the case, they're on fire, having just scored five runs in the bottom of the third off Gallardo. And amazingly, Harper had nothing to do with it. He struck out in his second at-bat of the night. No worries, because Zimmermann, Werth, LaRoche and Desmond all doubled, Span walked and Zimmerman singled. Put it all together and you've got five runs, a 6-0 lead after three innings and 14 runs scored by the Nats over their last five innings played. Unreal.
8:29 p.m. — And the hits keep coming. Two more runs in the fourth, ignited by Zimmermann's second hit of the night, a double by Span and a two-run single by Werth, giving him four RBI tonight (his most since May 2011). That did it for Gallardo, who was yanked without recording an out in the fourth, and that might do it for his trade value as well. It's 8-0 Nats after four innings of complete dominance.
8:37 p.m. — Well, there goes the shutout. The Brewers score a pair off Zimmermann in the top of the fifth, proving he's human after all. It's 8-2 now.
8:48 p.m. — Just what the Nats needed, a big injection of life to their lineup tonight. ... From Jordan Zimmermann, who is now 3-for-3. What, who did you think I meant?
9:07 p.m. — What is it about Zimmermann and big leads? He couldn't hold one in Baltimore in May. He couldn't hold one in Cleveland in June. And he looks like he doesn't want to hold this one tonight. Weeks and Francisco just went back-to-back in the sixth, each homering to cut the Nats' lead to 8-4 and now Fernando Abad is warming in the bullpen. No idea what Zimmermann's aversion to large leads is, but something about this situation just doesn't sit well with him.
9:17 p.m. — Can't say I thought Zimmermann would only last six innings tonight, but he's done after allowing four runs on nine hits. Jordan is in line for his league-leading 12th win, but he won't be satisfied with this performance. Craig Stammen in for the seventh, the Nats still up 8-4.
9:27 p.m. — And the Brewers keep chipping away. They score a run off Stammen in the top of the seventh, trimming the lead to 8-5 and forcing Davey Johnson to summon Drew Storen to get out of the jam. It's now 8-5, and the fact Rafael Soriano even has to consider pitching tonight is beyond ridiculous.
9:36 p.m. — Meanwhile, that unstoppable Nats lineup has put up four straight zeroes against a Milwaukee bullpen that threw 11 1/3 innings yesterday in Pittsburgh. Still 8-5 as Tyler Clippard enters for the eighth.
9:43 p.m. — Credit to Storen and Clippard for getting things back under control. They've combined to retire all four batters faced, so it remains 8-5 as we go to the bottom of the eighth.
10:00 p.m. — Insurance runs! Two of them! Werth delivered his fifth RBI of the night, his most since July 6, 2009 while he played for the Phillies. Zimmerman added another RBI single, so it's 10-5 as Soriano takes a seat in the bullpen and Fernando Abad enters for the ninth.
10:08 p.m. — That'll do it. Abad closes out an impressive, 10-5 victory for the Nationals, who have now scored 23 runs the last two days and improve to two games over .500.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 298 of 298 Newer› Newest»I'll admit that I was interested in Gallardo.
I am no longer interested.
Oh come on Jordan. Hanging slider.
JZim better start pitching again. He gets these big leads and goes into coast mode. Finish this.
maybe JZim is a bit gassed after all?
What ever happened to Les Platu? I swear I sense dude's presence in this thread. Hyper easy to ignore though...if ya wanna...
Oooo
Wow...JZim...wtf?
JZimm. Seen this movie before.
Ok....he must be tired...hangin em high
Sickening. I've seen this before. I'm really disappointed.
This better be Zim's last inning.
will someone come out and talk with him
We'll be okay. But I would give JZimm relief after this inning. Time to ring the pen for warmup
3 for 3 leads to a lot of base running. I'm guessing it is also quite humid in DC tonight so JZ is probably feeling some fatigue. Warm up the pen Davey.
After that 1st HR, McCatty should have been up and out to see JZim. Get the win.
The air is wet and thick, Knoxville
thanks Cat.
i wonder if Zmnn has trouble with the heat here.
We have some of the most humid summer weather of any park in the majors without a dome.
agreed, Ghost -- McCatty doesn't ever seem to visit at the right times -- always waits to long -- usually he uses his visits to give his UNwarmed up bullpen time to get warm.
Zim did fine last summer. I think it's more him running the bases plus the heat than just the heat itself. He was on base 3 times for goodness sake.
And for pitchers, there are days when your energy levels just run low -- Biorhythms, I guess
Alright JZimm, at least you got out of it. I guess we should never give Jordan a big lead anymore!
Jordan Zimmermann is not a #1 starter.
Nickel Bet: Our bullpen will hold Brewers scoreless.
DP,
Do I get a cold beer for that?
Disagreed Unknown. Everyone has let downs -- he's 11-3, 3 cg's, 4th lowest era in National league
and he isn't a #1? Lets not get carried away.
Is JZim a stress addict? Sheesh.
Gorzo got a break there
this ump is starting to call em at the ankles

Jordan Zimmermann is not a #1 starter.
That is just stupid. All of his numbers still put him in the Top 5 for Cy Young and the All Star game.
He loses focus with large leads. Not good. Needs to improve.
Agreed DP, he's part of the problem tonight with all those darn hits he's had. ;)
Gorzo knows our batters better than most.
Rendon gonna have more fun with Big Buffalo hitting behind him.
Hate to see Bryce sliding like that on a tailor made doubleplay.
I hope we see good Stammen tonight.
and what is FP talking about. Stammen hasn't been in a game when the Nats have had a lead for several weeks.
Segura is a hitting machine
May 31st was the last time Davey put in Stammen with a lead.
Milwaukee's hustling and trying to win. Gotta respect that.
What has been wrong with Stammen lately?
Yep, typical Craig Stammen like I said he just hasn't been good in his last few relief appearances.
NatsFanSinceStart: "Nickel Bet: Our bullpen will hold Brewers scoreless"
I owe everyone who bet me a nickel. thought I had that one won.
natsfan, agree, give them some credit.
hope we get good storen.

Huh, what?
Davey is supposed to be a Math guy. The stats are fairly clear on Stammen recently.
Have to go back to June 9th to find a Stammen appearance when he didn't put a runner on base by hit or walk.
As Stammen as been shaky the last few times out, Storen has been the flip side - he's been great lately. I trust him again (somewhat)
Wow is this really happening. Tell me everything will be ok. Why do I feel like is october
Can't believe the bats show up and we forget how to pitch. Lets get some insurance runs
I'll bet that Stammen will be studying his videos of a month ago when things were going well to see if he's doing something mechanically different -- if he hasn't been already.
Has to be something wrong with Stammen. Nats need Mattheus back.
would really prefer Storen to come back for the 8th rather than Clippard...bring in Clip if/when Storen runs into trouble.
Nats bats need to wake up. Time to get another 5 runs.
Bats are dead now. This reminds me of the game in Bmore . Zimm hits the wall and the bullpen implodes. Get the malox.
Wow the nats are back. Standing and looking. Gorzelany looking like cy young.
How is a fly to mid center, GASHING one? Getting tired of Carp
1-2-3 inning by Clippard would sure be nice...
That looked like a lineout, not a flyout SWM. But I honestly couldn't see it well so you may be right.
5 unanswered runs, but Gorzo knows us (and we, him).
Gonat, where are you? over/under on Clip? I will say 16.
Yes David it would. 6 straight outs even better.
Interesting to see Storen used as a stopper there.
Time to get a quick 1-2-3 with Clip and then tuck 'em in.
Nice 1-2-3 inning Clip. Very much needed.
way to shut me up Clip, what was that like 8 pitches? nice job.
Great inning by T-Klip.
For those who wanted Staymen as a starter Im thinking he is back to being a mop up. Cant trust this guy right now. He went from clutch to hack quickly.
Lets get a run or 2 here. I'm low on rolaids
Poor Suzuki. Only Nat to not get a hit today and he should have had one there.
Tracy. Now I have to delete my original post.
just when you think hangin Chad may be on the cusp of being DFA'd, he comes thru again...something about that guy, I know its been few & far between but he has had some clutch hits...another run here would be welcomed.
Lets get one here. C'mon Shaggy
SWM, at 949, now that is funny! am sure you had one ready to go...haha.
speed on the bases
jason don't need to swing until he sees one over
Ump giving the low strike now
I'll take it
Zoiks. Like Scoob I'll take it
SWM.. bourbon.. maalox.. but look.. Another Run.. 5 RBI for Werth....
Plus our bullpen is rested.. they didn't work yesterday so it's fine they get a couple of innings out of them tonight.
It was HOT AND DISGUSTING in NY all weekend, it's probably HOT AND DISGUSTING at Nats Park. Doesn't help that JZ was running the bases.
Wow, the Brewers are playing as bad defensively as we did Saturday. I'll take it though.
5 RBI night for that bum Werth?
Ughhhhhh. What is the brew crew drinking? I'll take it.
jeffwx - I hardly ever read game posts but I thought it might be fun tonight just to see how many people would be eating crow over Span leading off, Werth 2nd etc etc.
I retired a few years ago and what my buddy and I know do is head for as many good pizza places as we can find (an additional plus is a great craft beer or 12). You absolutely nailed the pizza places in this area but I think you left out just one of our top five. Pizza Paradisio in Dupont (not the Georgetown place). Our top 5 so far are Menomale/Pupatlla/Pacci/Paradisio & Mia's, but there are several others you listed that are really close. One that is fairly far away is Facci's out in Fulton Md (and the beer selection is poor). Oh, is there a ballgame going on??
Anyway - great posts except for the small squable and I like David Proctors post pretty much all the time for what it is worth and would love to sit on Sofa's seat when its available.
Go Nats!! Win this series 3/4
JeffWx.. definitely Fireworks in Leesburg for Pizza.. love that place. When I head into the Gainesville area, I hit the Tony's there.
Michelle s it's only ever disgusting in 2 parks. Philly and Bmore. Atlanta not disgusting but you need a hard hot for flying bottles.
Paul Brandt, good point about Tracy. That was a big double and looove the add-on runs.
Jeffwx is also correct about the garbage served at the park that they call pizza. One of my season ticket holder partners eats 4 slices a game and I am just appalled that he actually considers it good. Of course he has the body of a pear so what can you do.
Sjm no no 4 out of 4
Jim Kaat was on MLB Network today talking about his approach with a big lead. He once gave up 9 earned runs when he had a 12 run lead.
Come on Abad, the last thing you want to do is walk guys. If he hits it out of the park, it doesn't matter. Challenge him. Make him put it in play.
SWM.. IT was ungodly humid in NY this weekend and well I spent too many games in SEC 134 last year in the sweltering sun and the humidity...
Yeah I wish they gave Ledos pizza. Pappa Johns is bowling alley quality
Abad with a leadoff walk. Rendon learned. 4-3 groundout and gets out #1.
stat heads -
how often do we give up five runs and win?
btw - italian store in arlington for takeout.
gyfng
sjm, not sure where you are in the DC area but Emilios in Sterling and also in Lansdwone is one of the best in Loudoun county if you happen to make it to a Hounds game next year...believe the Hounds are supposed to open up the new ballpark next spring.
SJM308.. What time will you be at Justin's tomorrow?
waddu, this will be the 7th time the Nats have given up 5 runs or more and Won.
On the flip side of what I said about Abad challenging him and it not mattering if he hits it out of the park...you have to wonder if he feels like he's fighting for his job. He has a big benefit that he's a lefty, but with Mattheus coming back, his job is at risk. He probably cares as much about that as the score.
We need tux/untux tee shirts
Curly W! 10 runs!
yes, sjm, I think Facci's is outstanding...I stop there on the way back from New Germany
I liked Radius in Mt. Pleasant the one time I went there.
Have not tried paradiso in many years and it was in Gtown.
Friends were impressed with Menomale craft beer when we went Saturday.
You and your buds sound like you may be powerless over pizza. consider a support group like mine:
http://www.meetup.com/Pizza-Addicts-Anonymous/
Great game...we're on a roll.
Michele, not sure what you think of Pomodoro's near you...my italian brother-in-law from NY likes it.
DaMarco's in Bethesda has 1/2 price pizza Mon-Wed after 4 pm at the bar. $5 for a 10" real Neopolitan Margherita with a great oval wood oven from Naples.
Compare that to a $6 slice of papa john's at the park. Why they got rid of Z pizza for PJ's...oh yeah, corporate money
Emilio's must try the next time i visit my sis in Ashburn.
Nice win!!!
Ick Emilio's - bypass it.
Try 2 Amy's http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/7/100023/restaurant/DC/Cleveland-Park/2Amys-Washington
Matchbox opening in RTC soon.
