His team having won three straight at home against the Mets, Davey Johnson is sticking with the same lineup tonight against Anibal Sanchez. There is, of course, one twist: Since we're in an American League park, the DH is in effect. So tonight it'll be Chad Tracy, batting ninth behind all the other regulars.

7:08 p.m. — And we're underway with a strike from Anibal Sanchez to Bryce Harper. A gorgeous, 73-degree evening in late July. Can't complain about that.
7:19 p.m. — And the Nats jump right on the board, thanks to a leadoff triple from Harper. Actually, Harper came within a couple of inches of a home run, striking the top of the wall down in the right-field corner, the ball caroming way back toward center field. He raced around, helmet-less, and cruised into third base, putting the Nats in business early. Ryan Zimmerman then delivered an RBI single up the middle, putting the Nats up 1-0 as Stephen Strasburg takes the mound.
7:30 p.m. — Strasburg got himself into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the first, though he's certainly not the first pitcher to put Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder on base back-to-back. Truth be told, he was probably fortunate to hold Cabrera to a sharp single up the middle on a 2-0 fastball right down Broadway. But after that hit and a walk to Fielder, Strasburg got Victor Martinez to line out to center, ending the inning and preserving the Nats' 1-0 lead after one.
7:39 p.m. — It took Strasburg only seven pitches to retire the side in the bottom of the second. Good stuff there, including a strikeout of Jhonny Peralta. Still 1-0 heading to the third.
8:12 p.m. — Four innings in the books now, but the game is tied 1-1. The Tigers strung together a couple of two-outs hits off Strasburg in the bottom of the fourth, with Andy Dirks' double just inside the third-base line bringing home Fielder with Detroit' first run of the night. The Tigers actually wanted another, but the ball was touched by a fan, so Peralta was forced to go back to third base. Strasburg then escaped the jam by getting Alex Avila to fly out. So it's 1-1 as we move to the fifth.
8:26 p.m. — Strasburg cruises through the fifth. He's thrown only 59 pitches (40 strikes), as efficient as you'll ever see him. Looks like the Tigers are trying to be aggressive against him, and it's not necessarily working. Still 1-1 moving to the sixth.
8:36 p.m. — Meanwhile, the Nats haven't been able to make another dent into Sanchez since the top of the first. They got a couple of men on base in the sixth, with an Adam LaRoche, one-out double and an Ian Desmond, two-out walk. But Denard Span grounded out to end the inning, so this remains a 1-1 pitchers' duel, with no margin for error for Strasburg.
8:52 p.m. — So much for that pitchers' duel. Strasburg put himself in a real pickle in the bottom of the sixth and couldn't get out if it. Fielder laced a one-out single, Martinez followed with a double and then Peralta drew a walk to load the bases. Strasburg came up big-time to strike out Dirks on a 3-2 curveball, but he couldn't finish. Avila crushed a 2-1 fastball down and in, sending the ball flying to the right-field bleachers. Grand slam, and incredibly the first homer Strasburg has ever given up with more than one man on base. Just like that, the Nats trail 5-1 after six.
9:02 p.m. — A spectacular play by Zimmerman to rob Cabrera of extra bases and end the seventh inning, but it's not going to mean much if the Nats don't do something at the plate, and soon. They're down to their final six outs, though they've knocked Sanchez from the game. It'll be Jose Veras (just acquired from Houston) in from the bullpen for the eighth, the Nats still down by 4.
9:13 p.m. — And a 1-2-3 eighth against Veras. So now the Nats are down to their last three outs. Not looking good.
9:31 p.m. — It's over. Nats lose 5-1. The 3-game winning streak ends. And with the Braves up big late against the Rockies, the Nats are on the verge of falling 10 games back in the NL East.

But I don't know of anything as effective as the fact that they're batting the DH 9th tonight. Think about that for a second. Nobody on the bench hits well enough to displace a middle infielder, or a catcher, or a defense-first center fielder. That's embarrassing.
What's worse, bowdenball, is that we have pitchers that would be a more effective DH than our bench guys...

Funny stuff here. But I apologize for starting the game thread off negatively, so I'll try to turn it around: the two games at Nationals Park vs. the Tigers were great fun. So much talent on the field, and a lot of mutual respect. Hope we get more of the same today and tomorrow. And wow, these pitcher-hitter matchups are gonna be something else. Strasburg vs. Cabrera? Verlander vs. Harper? That is must-see TV.
Span and Tracy should be swapped.
Chad Tracy is a bum. I suspect we'll see Hairston or Lombo tomorrow after he throws up a O'fer.
Here's your obvious problem with the DH in the National League: Chad Tracy vs. Victor Martinez--not only is that not real baseball, it's downright goofy!!!!!
All the National League owners who voted to keep the DH out some 43 years ago, have gone to the Happy Hunting Ground---time to get real!
Charlie B, with Verlander going tomorrow for the Tigers you are more likely to see Bernadina instead of Tracy, if any changes at all.

Tracy has a higher on base % and slugging % than Lombo, both this season and for their careers. If you don't care about how well your DH gets on base or hits for power, I think you've got a great idea here.

Just saw "ladyandthenats" blog for the first time, the entry about recent player performance. Great blog, BTW, articles are easy to read through and full of facts.
Question for whomever has an answer: why are the Nats letting Rendon "twist in the wind" given his numbers?
If the team is still competing for the post-season, Rendon hasn't helped much at the plate of late (for a little while actually), and in the field he's made some great plays but some costly errors as well, so that doesn't seem explain it. It can't be great for the psyche of a young player to struggle for a prolonged period unless they feel learning to swim in the "big pool" is the best thing.
Thoughts? Thanks.

this is something every young player goes through. Harper went through it last year, Puig this year, etc. Teams develop a book on you and it's hard to adjust. Stop looking at the results and look at the approach. Rendon has hit several balls VERY hard and been robbed. He's never looked overwhelmed to me. The only way to get out of it is to let him keep playing.
Of course, it's frustrating sometimes. But he'll be fine.

My thought is this. Why is Danny Espinosa or Scott Boras using the handle "FL Bassist"?
I went to an Independent League game once where some guy was DH and batting ninth. Can't hit, can't field and you're playing for an independent league team.

I don't think Espi or Boras is a bass player, but I could be wrong. My question is a fair one given the numbers (.091 as of late as per the blog) and given that the Nats are still not close to eliminated from the postseason.

I think the answer to your question is another question- who replaces him? Lombo's offensive numbers are so bad that even a slumping Rendon is preferable, assuming Rendon eventually reverses course as all slumping players do. Espinosa still seems to be having problems in Syracuse.
They were able to wait out Harper's adjustment period in 2012 when they were clinging to a slim lead during the late spring and summer, and it paid off huge later in the season. The hope is that the same will be true of Rendon.
Lombo batting .251 bowdenball, however we can keep both lombo and rendon in the lineup tonight.
Lombo makes better contact than Tracy....trading places.
FL Bassist -- I think the other key, as David Proctor noted, is that he's hitting the ball well. He's got an absurdely low BABIP, and so most think that he's numbers will turn around with more play.
In his past 5 games, Lombo is 7 for his last 12 with 2 doubles.
put in the hot bat against the tigers and let Tracy play the pine...he's not in the teams future plans
does anyone have an answer to why the Nats didn't make a qualifying offer to Edwin Jackson so we could get an extra draft pick when he left.

It was pretty apparent that Jackson wouldn't accept the offer, but I guess Rizzo didn't feel comfortable taking that risk.

Small sample sizes are a terrible basis on which to make lineup decisions.

That is one of those hindsight situations that makes you scratch your head. I think most of us felt Jackson would get that qualifying offer. Ejax definitely won that situation. He had been bouncing around for so many years, I think he was determined to get a long term deal and not only did he do that, he got way more in money than I think anyone here figured.

Jeffwx - I am actually hoping that Rizzo stays "in-house" after Haren leaves. I have heard both NatsJack and Drew praise what we have in the minors and I am excited with how Rizzo has really emphasized pitching development.
I almost hate to put this out there but one of my fantasies is Haren continuing to figure things out and that 3.13 era for the last 4 games continues to improve. We sneak into the playoffs, he plays a role and then signs for 2 more years at a very low price. The chances of any of that happening are so low its not even worthy of Feel Wood giving me a sarcastic reply but I do like how Haren has handled his poor beginning here. I like his being a standup guy and I wish him well. I especially wish him well every 5th day when he pitches for us!!

Tyler Moore needs to play every day for the Nats at first base. Send the .230 hitting Laroche packing before the deadline and eat some of his salary. Moore can hit, but not when he bats once or twice a week. He's got a future, Laroche doesn't.

LaRoche is a real pro, and it's awesome when he's producing because he'll at the very least give you a constructive at-bat and he's got a great glove. But now if you peel back the rose colored wrap and he's a .230 hitting first baseman getting 8 figures a year.

I agree. Laroche way to streaky and unreliable. Can't have that at first base

If my dad was alive he would say Stra is not a " money" player. He'll win you some against the marlins etc. but when you need him to step up and blank someone. ...... He ain't got it.

Bottom line we called for a split in this series.
We can still get that.

Big cat if I recall we spotted Stras 3 in the 1st against the Marlins. He proceeded to give up 7 runs in the next 2 innings. But again with the lack of hitting it doesn't really matter.
