Associated Press Kurt Suzuki tags Starlin Castro on a third inning play at the plate. |
Hitting highlight: With Werth and Harper out of the lineup, several guys were bumped up a slot or two in Davey Johnson's order. That included Desmond in the No. 5 slot, and the shortstop took full advantage of the opportunity with one of his best offensive performances of the season. Desmond beat out an infield single in the second inning, crushed a two-run homer in the fourth and drove in another run with a double to right in the fifth. That left him in prime position to go for the cycle, but alas he got only one more at-bat in the game and grounded out to third on the first pitch he saw. Oh well, Desmond will have to settle for a 3-for-4, 3 RBI night.
Pitching highlight: It was kind of a strange night for Detwiler, who inexplicably was serving up doubles like his life depended on it. The Cubs touched him up for six of them in 6 2/3 innings, four of them leading off innings. But the left-hander managed to limit the damage as much as realistically possible, allowing only two runs. He certainly was pitching to contact all night, striking out only two batters but not issuing any walks. The end result: A quality start, his fifth in seven tries this season. Detwiler may have grimaced a bit as he covered first base on the final batter he faced, but whatever it was, it didn't appear too serious.
Key stat: Over his last seven games, LaRoche is 11-for-20 and has safely reached base 17 times.
Up next: Old pal Edwin Jackson will take the mound for the Cubs at 4:05 p.m. Saturday, still seeking his first win in seven tries this season. Stephen Strasburg, meanwhile, looks for his first win since Opening Day.

WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO!!! 5 in a ROW! Sweet!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HOOO.....
oh wait, Michele already posted
This team can win a lot of games if they play good baseball. That goes double against bad teams.
Lol - why did Desi say "steak" at the end of his post game interview with Julie?
Lets hope Detweiler is okay.
Lost in the shuffle. Great game for the defense. Especially C, CF, RF and second base.
ehay2K, steak as in ribeyes as in RBIs.
Wonder if John Tumpane was one of the three umps that missed the instant replay review.
He sure missed the call the double by Ryan Zimmermanw
Stras versus EJax should be interesting.
Agree, defense was excellent and bailed out Det on several occasions. I'd add 1B to the list -- making up for Ross not covering first at least once and a nice pick on Desi's intentionally bounced throw.
could be...good chance of rain tomorrow early evening
@Harpo why the comment "Hope Det is Ok" Did I mtss something?
Ghost of Steve M. obviously suggested that Desi should move up in the box.
Michele-- 7 of our last 8.
Officially hot.
Remember, Spellcheck handcuffed us in April last year.

Hopefully just a leg cramp. He wasn't getting off of the mound well to cover 1st and grimmaced on his way and Davey pulled him.
Amanda asked Davey in the postgame about the grimmace and Davey just talked about Det looking like he just woke up out of bed.
Lots of bang bang plays. Lived Zi shrugging at us when we wouldn't stop booing the ump who called him out at second. Good game!
Eury Perez on his way.
Hopefully, with Perez in house, they can let Harper have another day. Even if he thinks otherwise.
Hi Folks: Have to believe everyone behaved during game posts!
So many nice plays. Loved Span once again and Shark had a nice assist when the game was still close. Zimm was safe at 2nd but I am just happy to see him continue to hit, same with LaRoche and even Espinosa.
Have to think that MicheleS's dad is hanging out with Steve Goodman as he sings his lament about the Cubs. I still miss seeing him live although I get "Souvenirs" every time we see John Prine.
We should have 25 men in the dugout tomorrow. I was just a little worried we would be short tonight but the Cubs really are not like the Tigers or Braves are they? Also thought we might see Henry tonight at 7-2 but Davey is in charge.
We are now just a -5 in run differential. We could be on the plus side by Sunday.
Go Nats!!!
NatsJack - just think about Bernadina, he is probably only our 3rd best arm. I wonder if Bryce was in right and healthy if they would have challenged him? I doubt it.
Ian Desmond moves up in the batters box and Ryan Zimmerman moves closer to the visitors dugout. He hits pitches over the center of the plate like hes hitting to the opposite field.
Away from all the action tonight. Why was the game over so fast? Looks like there was plenty of folks on base. Was Angel Hernandez his usual dreadful self? Why Eury Perez? Has Corey Brown missed his chance?
Hoping Strasburg really has his game together tomorrow. Bullpen is actually in great shape but I would love to see 7 strong innings. When is the last game Duke or Henry pitched? I would guess he would bring Mattheus in if its the 7th and still close. I like seeing Stammen and Mattheus getting regular work and I love that Soriano had a nice day off today.
Go Nats!!
Is it just me or do the players seem to be a bit more dismissive of Davey than in the past? Desmond mentioned about moving up in the box that sometimes you have to make stuff up to make a manager happy, and Ross Detwiler doesn't seem to hide his frustration with Davey's decisions. What's up with that?
Corey Brown is on the DL, he's hurt.
Swami - Peric's boy is on the dl
Off to the NIDO to add mr proctor to my drink list (damn!)
Glad we got this one in. Weather is a-comin'. Stay safe, people.
god, I am so helpless! I went to the NIDO sight and actually figured out how to scroll to the right and when I got to the end (Chase was the last guy listed) I have no idea how to add another name.
Looking for help for adding a stupid pretend drink. Not much of a life huh?
Sorry, I should have gotten the RBI reference for steak.
Natsjack, I am on the Tweeter but don't follow Desi. Or any player, for that matter. Might follow Buffet (Warren, that is) one of these days though.
I took my students to Kings Dominion so listened to the game.
Did not hear pregame. Did MLB say anymore about any discipline against Angel Hernandez?
I suspect Joe Torre will sweep it all under the rug. Not sure why they do so little to the umps.
We could really use a vintage Stras performance tomorrow (by vintage I mean 6 innings, ton of Ks, dominance albeit inefficient dominance.) It isn't the same with him getting shelled like a 3/4 starter. And one of these days Edwin is going to pitch well and get his first win. We all know how inconsistent but suddenly dominant he can be. Time to wake up Stras. "BECOME WHO YOU WERE BORN TO BE." #LOTRgeek
I don't have a life either, sjm (fixed it). :-)
ehay, no need to apologize for not getting the steak reference (or as regards being or not being on Tweeter, which I am not). I didn't get it either, although I'm also familiar with that particular baseball jargon.

Bryce tweeted a pic of his very disgusting infected toe. Ick.
"ehay2K, steak as in ribeyes as in RBIs."
Ha! That's funny right there. I have a twitter account, and I think I follow Desi, but I almost never log in.
i hear ump from Houston game got suspended 2 games.
Angel Hernandez then should get 2.
hershbeck should get 1
Caps, Caps, Caps!!! Walk off win!!!!
just think about Bernadina, he is probably only our 3rd best arm.
And Perez's arm is not very good. Of course Ankiel is still out there ... :)

Might have just bought himself a couple more days off if Davey saw it.
agree about Stras I ptefer he not pitch to contact. pitch 6 innings 105 pitches with 12 K.
The pitching to contact theory, which I generally like, is not goos for Strasburg.
The pitching to contact theory, which I generally like, is not goos for Strasburg.
Just like JZimnn Stras needs to learn to mix and match K's and pitch-to-contact; and his catchers need to work with him on that.
Remember, JZimmnn is still a year ahead but he has almost the same ceiling. Its just that only Rizzo saw that before he drafted him. The Wisconsin muscle proved he could whip the ball up above 97 in relief in the post season. Hit close a couple of times this season.
Cool, in-depth article about Harper's swing
Check out this quote from Joey Votto:
"'To me, when I watch him, I don’t see a standard left-handed path,' Votto said. 'I just see a beautiful, flat, powerful, quick stroke through the middle of the zone.'"
Nice.
"The Wisconsin muscle proved he could whip the ball up above 97 in relief in the post season."
That was so, so nasty. What an inning!
Bat speed its what makes steak.
Looks like we'll be at one back tomorrow morning. Giants up 6 on the Barves with Cain tossing a one-hitter into the 5th.
For this weekend, go Giants!
Anyone noticing that Hudson is losing to the Giants? An even better night.
SteadyEddy....we were in our usual seats but I can't get on line I. The stadium so I didn't see your question.
Headed to LA in the morning, so look for Nats gear in the stands on Tuesday night! Dannyelinosa and I will both be there!
Wow...hold steady, Giants!
tim Hudson gives up 6 runs and 7 hits in the 4th.
Lead off walk to Uggla in the top of the 5th...not a good way to hold steady...heh ;).
The Braves are being blown out! Tim Hudson gave up 6 runs in the 4th.
McCann 2 run blast. 6 - 2
angel Pegan 2 run dinger 8-2
BA-BOOM!
Bottom of the 8th coming up in San Fran. We're three Braves outs away from 1 game back!
Nats only 1 game behibd.
SWEET
For any weekend they're not playing us (and for my late brother) - go, Buster! :-)
For this weekend, go Giants!
Nice to see the Braves lost.
So taters are actually steak, or at least the sizzle.
Now I'm getting confused again.
@1a -- Humm Baby. Wore my Croix de Candlestick hat for good luck last night. Didn't help me, but it seemed to work for their game...
Sooo, he's a steak and taters kind of guy? Now I'm confused...
Good work with the hat, sec3. As previously noted, we saw part of a SFO/LAD game on tv during our recent trip. It was the final game of a series, in SFO, and I noticed a number of fans brandishing brooms in the stands. We didn't see the end of the game, as we had tix for an excursion that evening. As it happens, there was a Dodger fan on the excursion. I thought about asking him about the brooms ("What does that mean? I'm so confused."), but decided not to do so. :-)
