Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER Nate Karns and Kevin Gausman face off tonight at Nationals Park. |
So it should be a good matchup between these two young fireballers. One thing to watch in particular: How do they fare against the opposing lineups the second time around? Gausman struggled in that department last Thursday in Toronto. We'll see if he's made an adjustment, and we'll see if Karns is able to overcome that issue against a very tough Baltimore lineup.
Bryce Harper once again is out of the Nationals' lineup. Davey Johnson is going with the same group that yesterday produced only two runs, hoping to get a little more thunder against Gausman.
Updates to come, please check back...

6:45 p.m. — Well, this is not good: It's pouring here and the start of tonight's game will be delayed. They're hoping this won't take long, but it's some intense rain at the moment. Stay tuned for updates.
7:50 p.m. — OK, the tarp is finally coming off and the pitchers are about to warm up. First pitch will be at approximately 8:25 p.m.
8:26 p.m. — This game is underway, and so is Nate Karns' big-league career. The right-hander fires a 94 mph fastball low to Nate McLouth for ball one.
8:31 p.m. — Wow, a 1-2-3, 10-pitch, top of the first for Karns, who dialed his fastball up to 97 mph against Manny Machado. Good stuff there. He got two grounders to second and then combined with Adam LaRoche on a nifty 3-1 groundout to get Nick Markakis and end the inning. Really nice start for the kid, who I'm sure had a few butterflies when he went out there.
8:41 p.m. — Double wow in the bottom of the first. Steve Lombardozzi and Ryan Zimmerman each connected off Gausman for one-out singles. Adam LaRoche then stepped to the plate and destroyed a 96 mph fastball into the right-center field bleachers for a three-run homer that left this ballpark rocking. Just like that, the Nats lead 3-0 thanks to LaRoche's ninth homer and 24th, 25th and 26 RBI of the season.
8:55 p.m. — And the Orioles get one run back in the top of the second on a Chris Davis sinle and Matt Wieters double just inside the first-base line. Karns got himself into more of a jam, with runners on the corners and one out, but he reached back and struck out Yamaico Navarro and Gausman to end the inning and keep the Nats' lead at 3-1.
9:04 p.m. — Hmm, Karns needs to learn a couple of things about bunting: 1) You can't bunt a ball that hard, and 2) When you do, you've got to hustle down the line. Because of it, he just ended the second inning on a 5-6-4 double play.
9:12 p.m. — And Karns bounces back with a 1-2-3 top of the third, again retiring the top of the Orioles lineup. He's at 49 pitches through three. Davey Johnson said before the game he'll probably limit him to 80 percent of his usual pitch count, knowing he'd be extra amped-up for this. So figure he might be limited to maybe 80 total pitches, thus maybe five innings. Still 3-1 Nats as we go to the bottom of the third.
9:30 p.m. — Good lord, is Chris Davis on fire or what? He absolutely murdered a 1-2, 95 mph fastball from Karns into the right-field bullpen just now. The ball never lifted more than 20 feet off the ground. That's his 17th homer in 52 games. Do the math, that's remarkable. That trimmed the Nats' lead to 3-2, but it didn't stay that way for long. Two batters later, Karns left a 2-0 fastball way up in the zone to J.J. Hardy and the Baltimore shortstop crushed it to left-center for his 10th homer. So now it's a tie game, 3-3, as we move to the bottom of the fourth.
9:43 p.m. — Two thoughts to share about the bottom of the fourth: 1) Tyler Moore and Roger Bernadina, who entered tonight with a COMBINED .273 batting average and .420 slugging percentage, crushed back-to-back homers of Gausman. 2) Sweet Fancy Moses! I mean, seriously, who saw THAT coming? Throw in Span's RBI double and the Nats have opened up a 7-3 lead and knocked Gausman out of the game. His final line: 4 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 3 HR. His ERA after two big-league starts now stands at 11.00.
10:17 p.m. — As much as Davey wanted to put Karns in line for the win, he just couldn't do it. Karns walked a pair of batters with one out in the fifth, and with Markakis stepping to the plate, Captain Hook had no choice but to stroll to the mound. Karns got a really nice ovation from the crowd as he departed. He won't qualify for the win, but he certainly acquitted himself well tonight. Duke, meanwhile, came up big, inducing a double play out of Markakis and then retiring the side in the sixth. That bridges the gap to the back of the bullpen and allows Davey to use those relievers the way he'd like. Still 7-3 Nats heading to the bottom of the sixth.
10:28 p.m. — And a scoreless seventh inning for Drew Storen, who needed one of those. We've reached the stretch, with the Nats still ahead 7-3.
10:51 p.m. — It took 22 pitches (18 of them strikes) but Tyler Clippard pitched a scoreless eighth, getting Chris Davis to fly out to right with two on and two out to escape a jam and preserve the 7-3 lead.
11:00 p.m. — LaRoche with his second bomb of the night, his 10th of the season. It's 8-3. Wait, make that 9-3 as Bernadina drives in another run.
11:09 p.m. -- Ballgame. Nats win 9-3. Duke gets credit with the win, but Karns deserves plenty of praise.

Both fan bases have one choice to watch the game
span heard me
keep it going boys.
Mick, I think Davey has to play for the W for the team and not for Karns. It's team before player but yes, let him go as long as he stays effective.
who are these guys!!!! clutch hitting
Gonat,
Didn't miss your point at all. Your anger should have been directed at "stupid MASN" however, not Oriole fans.
And To answer your question, yes I would expect them to do so, and I hope they have multiple opportunities to do just that.
Two guys who really needed it. Happy for them and a hope the light and the end of the tunnel is approaching.
It is suppose to be joint. Do you see Nat fans cheering?
wow, the boys are hitting but let's keep it up since we know what the O's can do. This game may end up 12-10 although am really sick of the hand holding in the booth with the entire MASN crew...vomit!
saw a lot of Nats fans cheering last inning.
play for the W
warm up Duke ??
Karns looks great
Wow, Karns goes Fastball, Slider, Slider, and then drops the curve on him for the K!
Goon is back!!!
stammen...thats better
i jinxed poor nate with my comment 5 mins ago.
sorry dude
And MASN is showing Nats fans standing and cheering Karns as he exits the game.
Duke to face Markakis (L-L) and then Stammen will probably come in.
Good move Davey. Pen has to do the Job. O/s can mash it. got to get out of this.
Tip of the cap to Mr. Nate Karns. Job well done, kid. You won't earn the win, but you earned our gratitude. Great debut.
thanks dp, makes sense
Ok.. EVERYONE.. HAPPY THOUGHTS TO ZACH DUKE!!!
You done good Nat Nate. I'm thrilled the bats gave you support. Now Zach get a DP!
Sean Burnette. I kinda miss you.
Woah, Duke got the job done.

3 0 lead is already gone. 3 in the first and then nothing. Man this team stinks. So does this pitcher. 9--4 os will win again. Its just killing me.

Debbie freaking downer.
Oh yes! Doubleplay! Lucky BABIP there. Right at Desi!
AHEM.. Happy thoughts bring good Karma People.. Lets keep it up!!! GO ZACH!
ooooooohhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm
(was that too political ?)
Scott Im sorry. As I child bullied by Bmore fans because I was a DC fan has left scars. Just wanna win this. Sorry for being a downer. Great job DUKE.
yes, happy thoughts works for Sunshine Bobby C
Personally I would've gone to Abad. That was a big spot. Duke got the BABIP in his favor as Desi was almost up the middle.
Thumb-sucking in the booth is nauseating.
Will FP ask, "Where the heck was THAT pitch?" in this game? No. Pull all punches, keep it boring.
Imagine Yankee fans putting up with this during a Yanks-Mets broadcast.
Just show honme fans in each game
One more extended performance Tuesday night from rookie Kevin Gausman would go a long way in getting the Orioles’ 'pen the break it needs.
"If we can get one more good outing (Tuesday), we can get back on our feet down there physically,” Showalter said. “I challenge anybody to go into Toronto four days and not have challenges. Those guys didn't allow us to breathe, so you've just got to keep grinding.”

Oh, Chris Davis is probably why.

What are you talking about? Did you forget about Lombo's hit in the 1st? 1-6
O's clown broadcaster had no idea he was mis-describing Ben's Chili Bowl's Original Chili Half-Smoke.
This is pathetic. Enough MASN Communism for one night, comrades. Going over to Charlie and Dave.
Glad I didn't DFA Duke and Bernadina...maybe next week
Lucky no-wind. That's 2 HRs if the wind is blowing out. #Duke
I'd still DFA Duke despite his outing today. But yeah, no way for Bernie.
Gonats you got me. i feel stupid.
Desmond only one without a hit. Hasnt looked goid on any batted ball (or am I wrong again)
Wow... Most stressful 1.2.3 inning ever! I'll take it.
Where has this Zach Duke been all year?
FP should calls the beers in B'more Natty Bohs...
or is that what they really call em in B'more ?
Bunted like he was going for another homer.
Yikes that was a bad bunt. But I'll let it slip this time since you got a homer, Bernie.
This Zack Duke pitched last Sepember
Who was that wearing the duke jersey?
john wayne

True, Jeff. Real name is National Bohemian (which actually used to be an outfield wall sign at Griffith Stadium, he said, dating himself). Actually was a pretty good beer, as I recall dimly from my beer-drinking days.
But honestly, I think the reason the denizens of Charm City (fill in your own joke here) liked it was because it was cheap.
Nothing that there is anything wrong with that.
When is Jim Hunter out of herr?
Duke Snider
Drew in the 7th. Interesting.
Drew can't catch a break.
Hate to see that. Ryan needs to let Desi get that ball.
Btw: last HR Karns gave up was hi gas and a great pitch.
Ugh. Zimmerman in 7-8th = liability
Oh yes! Storen gets those 2 outs!
Ha! Foot. Insert. Mouth. Nice zimm
Thanks sunshine...I didn't know they advertised at old Griffith Stadium
Drew!!!
Scott, you are right on that last HR. Hardy got on top of it. Unfortunately it still counts on the ole ledger.
Natty boh. Aka bay water
Where has this Drew been all season?
Way to go Druuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
That was nasty!!!! Pow!
Beauty of an inning Storen!
If Zim doesn't get that ball, Desi still has no chance. Zim was the only guy with a play, that's why he went for it. Plenty of reasons to get on Zim, but that wasn't one of them.
waddy....good one. you get what you pay for I guess. except for Jason Werth....whoops, sorry, wrong blog
"Scott, you are right on that last HR. Hardy got on top of it. Unfortunately it still counts on the ole ledger."
Seriously. Right after he hit it I couldn't believe he got his bat on the ball. On the replay it seemed an awful lot like he was sitting on it. In retrospect, I think he got them a lot on those high heaters and I think the Os figured out when it was likely to come...
btw, has ghost vanished ?
jeffwx - never heard that one?
anything i don't know about baseball, i know about beer.
7-3 and Clip's demeanor still makes me nervous...
Marlins just lost in a walk-off single.
Another doink hit in this series by them.
I missed the intro of umps, just realized on Drew's K, Tom Halion is calling balls and strikes.
He did the old ripping the phone book strike 3like he did in Strasburg's debut.
This game ain't over yet folks.
OK, now it's more than demeanor making me nervous...
This is where Abad should be up and warming quickly.
Please don't be the bad Clip tonight.
0-2 count and clip throws right down tge middle.
Too much to ask a third reliever to be good.
Was listening to Leo Mazone over tge wekend. Said most managers mis manage bullpens, switch pitchers way too much.
"He did the old ripping the phone book strike 3"
Hilarious! Your hitting critiques when we're losing drive me crazy, MNF, but you're cracking me up tonight!
OK...OK. Stay loose Clip...
Good job Clippard.
Yes. YES!
Clippard just got my heart racing. Good job.
Terrific job by Duke, Drew and Clipp!!!
I am putting away the bourbon and Maalox for the night. This one is as good as over.
Clipp is making my stomach ache.. thankfully he got out of it
If you were sitting here most my comments are funny especially we are winning.
Since my boss is a perfectionist so i sometimes get the same way.
Whose pitching the 9th
DON'T SAY THAT SUNSHINE!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU'LL JINX IT
LAROCHE!!
As Peric says LaRoche is a has been.
Mark: LaRoche with his 2nd HR of the night and 10th of the season. (By the way, he's only 1 behind Morse now and has 6 more RBI.)
Also, factor in LaRoche's vastly better defense.
LaRoche again! Too bad Henry pitched last night.
Wow. Can you imagine LaRoche if he weren't in his washed up season? He'd be closing in on the season home run record!
Desi!
Nice, middle infield now 2-8
Oh, that woke Desi up! Now, just remember how you did that.
Spoke too soon, it's Henry.
Beat me Gonat. Was going to say everyone has a hit.
Be nice manassas this blog is getting civil lol.
Great to see some bats working tonight. I won't call for Eck's head tonight. There is always tomorrow.
Carp: "Fair and balanced in the Battle Of The Beltways".
What a joke.
Yes! OFFENSE!!!!!!!!
Nice to see Shark hitting.
Hey, can Danny have a shot at this guy? Maybe he'll get out of his slump.
Eck firstbas coach tonight.
Harper is acting hitting coach.
Shark 2 RBI hits tonight.
This is AWESOME.

AMEN brother !
Cant play both, and he's sux in outfield. I'm glad he's gone.
Under acting hitting coach Bryce Harpr, the Nats did a really rsre thing.
They didn't strike out once.
Lol. Eck at 1st base. Keep him there and MNF might be content.
Lol JJ Hardy as player of the game...
Eck at first is good.
So, top of the 9th, there's about a thousand of us left. Metro thing.
Abad looks badd ass
"Lol. Eck at 1st base. Keep him there and MNF might be content."
Anything to keep MNF quiet about Eck and strike outs... even if it means getting hits! ;)
Abad looking sharp!
I am guessing Duke will get the win.
So... No strikes and 9 runs with no Harper... Both very good signs...
WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Nice Hitting, Nice Pitching! Way to Go NATE!!!!!!
Question: If Karns doesn't get the win, then who does?
Sick game Nats!!!
Zim has a cannon from third.
Tongue firmly in cheek
Well, that was yummy.
Official scorer decides winner. I predicted Duke.
Update: no strikeouts, 9 runs sans Harper, and Zim gets the final out with a perfect strike on a routine grounder. All very good things to see!
Now if Miami just looses I'll sleep well
Oh yes. Hey Os fans don't let the subway door hit ya in the a.......
Agreed Duke will get the win, although Storen was much stronger.
Scott Miami lost. Go Yanks.
Can some one help me hearing is weak wjhen people do not annucuate clearly.
In the head and shoulders commercial with CJ Wilson when the girl sniffs his hair he says "Is this how you always....." always what?
She responds "Yes we do.,"
That's correct Manassas, ALR "has been" great!!!
On pace for 30 HR's!!!!
Does Davey shave? All the important questions, right here on NI!!!! LOL
Heat not fish
No shave. I'm not saving again till we loose. Let's all do it! Who's with me? :-)
MNF I always wonder that too!
I think "do sound checks"
I really like this kid Karns. Well spoken. Can we keep him somehow?
Good idea Scott M.!
But I hate whiskers with a passion. Maybe I'll stop eatin' til we lose--nah, I can't do that either.
I forget the exact line on the shampoo commercial but can hear it clearly when it comes on. 100% sure it's along the lines of "do sound check."
