Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER Dan Haren faces Jonathan Pettibone tonight at Nationals Park. |
That lineup tonight will go up against right-hander Jonathan Pettibone, seeking to become the Phillies' first rookie to go 4-0 to begin his career since Kyle Kendrick (last night's starter) in 2007. Dan Haren gets the nod for the Nationals, hoping his ragged outing in San Diego was a mere blip on an otherwise upward trend for the veteran.
Jeff Kobernus, meanwhile, officially had his contract purchased from Class AAA Syracuse and is available off the bench. Yunesky Maya has officially been designated for assignment, possibly ending his four-year tenure in the Nationals organization.
Remember: Tonight's game is on Fox. It'll be Tom McCarthy and Bill Ripken with the call. So that's a Phillies play-by-ply guy and a former Oriole. Enjoy...

7:15 p.m. — We are underway on another chilly late-May night in D.C. Great crowd on hand, possibly a sellout, as Dan Haren delivers his first pitch to Jimmy Rollins.
7:20 p.m. — And that's a 1-2-3, 14-pitch top of the first for Haren. He struck out both Freddy Galvis and Michael Young and was in control throughout. Solid start to his evening. Here come the Nats to face Jonathan "Don't Call Me Richie" Pettibone.
7:30 p.m. — Well, the bottom of the first got off to a good start, with Denard Span working the count full and then driving a single to right. And then it all fell apart. Bryce Harper struck out on an impressive changeup from Pettibone. Span was thrown out trying to steal second, with a pinpoint missile from Erik Kratz from his knees. And Ryan Zimmerman watched strike three sail by to end the inning. So it's scoreless as we move to the second.
7:39 p.m. — Wow, what a bizarre top of the second for Haren. He struck out Ryan Howard and Delmon Young, giving him four straight Ks, all swinging. And then Domonic Brown and Erik Kratz homered on consecutive pitches. Brown crushed a hanging curveball to right, Kratz took the first pitch he saw to left-center. Then Haren went out and struck out Ben Revere to end the inning. So, to recap: Haren has faced eight batters so far. He's struck out five, given up homers to two and retired the other batter on a flyout. That will kind of screw up your BABIP, right? Phillies lead 2-0 heading to the bottom of the second.
7:56 p.m. — Tyler Moore: Not a natural left fielder. As we just saw in unsightly fashion. Galvis sent a deep fly to left-center. Both Moore and Span had a bead on it, but Moore was closer and called off Span. The ball hit his glove ... and fell to the ground for a two-base error. That's generally why you defer to the center fielder on such plays. Fortunately, Haren pitched around the error and got through the third. So it's still 2-0 Phillies.
8:12 p.m. — Nice rally from the Nats in the bottom of the third, though it probably should have produced more than one run. With two on and one out, Zimmerman crushed a line drive to center, unfortunately right at Revere for the second out. LaRoche did follow with an RBI single up the middle, and Desmond followed by drawing a walk to load the bases for Suzuki. With Petibone on the ropes, the Nats seemed to have a golden opportunity to do some real damage. Except Suzuki check-swung at the first pitch and tapped a weak grounder to first base to kill the rally. Dagger. Nats trail 2-1 after three.
8:19 p.m. — A season-high seven strikeouts for Haren now in only four innings. The only blemishes on his evening: Those back-to-back homers. Still 2-1 Phillies.
8:32 p.m. — Wow, Span just missed a two-run homer into the second deck (yes, a homer into the second deck) by a couple of feet. Oh well, he'll happily take his subsequent RBI single to right-center, tying this game 2-2. Span is now 3-for-3 tonight, putting on quite a show.
8:43 p.m. — Oh, those two-out doubles by the opposing pitcher. They'll kill you every time. Haren is not happy with himself after giving that one up to Pettibone, followed by another double to Rollins. That puts the Phillies back on top, 3-2, as we move to the bottom of the fifth.
8:48 p.m. — Adam LaRoche to the rescue. Opposite-field bomb off Pettibone in the bottom of the fifth, tying this game back up at 3-3. Several Nats have really started to hit the ball hard the last few innings, though they don't have as much to show for it as they'd like.
8:58 p.m. — So, on a staff that includes Strasburg, Gio, Zimmermann and Detwiler ... who had Haren as the first Nats pitcher this season with a 10-strikeout game? Pretty remarkable, especially when you consider he's only through six innings. Still 3-3.
9:02 p.m. — Hmm, Haren is done after six innings, pinch-hit for by Roger Bernadina (who grounded out on the first pitch he saw to end the sixth). So now in a 3-3 game, the Nats' new pitcher is ... Henry Rodriguez. Hold onto your hats, folks.
9:13 p.m. — Well, his inning included a 100 mph fastball off Kevin Frandsen's forearm, but Henry otherwise got through the seventh unscathed. So we've reached the stretch, this game still tied 3-3. FYI: This was the first time Rodriguez appeared with the Nats either ahead or tied since April 4. His last four appearances all came with the Nats trailing by at least five runs.
9:32 p.m. — Big chance for the Nats in the bottom of the seventh, but they can't convert. After Antonio Bastardo walked both Harper and LaRoche, Charlie Manuel summoned the struggling Chad Durbin to face Desmond in a big spot. Desmond, never one to work the count, popped up the first pitch foul, then lofted a flyball to center on the next one to end the inning. Still 3-3 as Drew Storen enters for the eighth.
9:44 p.m. — Ugh, another shaky outing for Storen. He issued a one-out walk to Michael Young. Though he did strike out Howard (giving Howard a golden sombrero tonight), he then served up a base hit down the right-field line to Delmon Young, with Harper unable to throw out Young at the plate. (And yes, Delmon Young somehow managed only a single on a hit in which a guy scored from FIRST base.) Storen then compounded matters by serving up an RBI double to Domonic Brown. So it's 5-3 Phillies in the eighth, and Storen now sports a 5.30 ERA, having either been scored upon or charged with a blown save in three straight appearances.
9:59 p.m. — Another chance for the Nats in the bottom of the eighth, and another chance squandered. It didn't help that Lombardozzi couldn't get a sac bunt down, nor that Chad Tracy swung at the very first pitch Jeremy Horst threw on the night (after being summoned to pitch out of a jam) and lofted a shallow fly to left. So we go to the ninth, the Nats still trailing 5-3.
10:07 p.m. — Good stuff from Fernando Abad in his Nats debut. Flashed a 96 mph fastball during a scoreless top of the ninth. Last chance for the Nats now, down two with Jonathan Papelbon entering.
10:25 p.m. — It's over. The Nats lose 5-3, an incredibly frustrating loss at that.

Lots of tape made in the way back. Still possible to see.
Come on Ian
That would've been a nice run to have, Desi.
Now, its really heart-attack time: Storen. 5.0 ERA.
Have to capitalize on their lousy front of their bullpen.
Disappointing.
Somebody has no excuse.
Now 8 left on 5 in scoring position.
Lack of clutch hitting.
That's accounting for Henry and the 1/2 ball player that Espinosa has been.
Natsjack let me save you and Ghost some grief you'll have to talk to Rizzo about that.

Espi should apply for membership to the Goon Squad. He would fit right in.
Web gem
What a play by Lombo!
All teams seem to be trying to bunt on Storen. That almost worked.
Lucky for Lombo, but a freaking great play by Adam LaRoche!
For people that prefer the truth, Storen's ERA os 4.50, not 5.0.
... and 3.44 for Henry meanwhile Drew issues a walk.
NatsJack, down to 4.42 and why would the truth ever work for Peric. He couldn't make a point otherwise.
I'm not saying Storen has been spectaculer but better than Henry IMO.
No walk Drew its the 8th
Peric, it wouldn't matter if Henry was 3.00 He has pitched in low stress situations. Usually getting the bottom of the order.
Four K's on Ryan Howard!
I'm not saying Storen has been spectaculer but better than Henry IMO.
You were saying?
How does Young score on that. Come on.
Peric, it wouldn't matter if Henry was 3.00 He has pitched in low stress situations. Usually getting the bottom of the order.
And today? It was 3-3 in the seventh.
We should've had Clip in here. He's actually been good. Drew hasn't.
Storen's walk comes back to bite him.
C'mon Storen step it up you are costing us games
I'm not saying Storen has been spectaculer but better than Henry IMO.
Again, you were saying? What's your excuse now Ghost?
Peric got his 5.00+ ERA now.
Storen's walk comes back to bite him.
And you dude ... that's what you get for dissing Henry.
poking the bear NJ?
Storen went to Stanford, but sure didnt learn not to walk peiple late in agame. Especially one who had K 3 times.
That walk opened ball of problems.
Tell me he is better than HROD the month of May. No way.
Davey always seems hesitant to pull a relief pitcher and go to a matchup. You now have Abad. Use him in the lefty/lefty.
Jeez, Drew.
And peric, the supposed Nats fan, sits in his dark room at his computer laughing gleefully.
Peric got his 5.00+ ERA now.
This is the Natsjack blog we must be accurate right?
Its actually 5.30 right now. Right Natsjack?
Now, Storen hasn't been right since his surgery last season. He has options. He is one pitcher than can send to the minors to work things out.
Joe Seamhead, sadly that is just what I pictured.
And peric, the supposed Nats fan, sits in his dark room at his computer laughing gleefully.
Yeah right ... you'd like to think that wouldn't you damned moron. The most moronic, simpering, petulant child speaks. Moron.
Storen is in a similar situation as Espi. Nobody on this team should feel that they have a permanent spot on this team.
Storen isn't doing it but I wouldn't trust Henry late in any game unless there was a 4 run deficit.
Feel bad for Storen. Watching his career go up in smoke. Feel bad for us too!
Joe Seamhead, sadly that is just what I pictured.
And they claim I'm arrogant Ghost. YOU ARE THE EPITOMY of it just like a certain trollish poster likes to claim.
What can we do with Drew? Our bullpen is already depleted. We can't just send him down without a replacement.
I'd venture a guess Rizzo is watching some of those teams that are falling out of contention for a bullpen arm.
We strand guys all night and then Drew comes in and throws up all over himself. This team is exactly what the record says it is. Any aspirations of playoffs should just be put aside. Not even in the same sentence as the Braves.
Storen seems to gives up a run every otger game.
Is he hurt or is it a head case?
Feel bad for Storen. Watching his career go up in smoke. Feel bad for us too!
My Gawd what is it with you people? Gloom and doom sheesh! He's far too young for that. But he hasn't succeeded in overcoming the adversity of his first injury. I want to know why. And fast. Or at least I would if I were Rizzo.
And only one poster continues to call people names.
Well deserved names. NJ. Well deserved.
Manassas I don't know but like I said yesterday either his elbow or his head has something wrong. He isn't fooling anyone.
T-MO FINALLY he draws a walk!! LOVE IT! Happy dance!!!
Why is Lombo bunting at a ball over his shoulders? Come on. Pull the bat back.
Its not the injuries or the manager or the weather. Its a LOFT problem LACK OF F N TALENT.
What can we do with Drew? Our bullpen is already depleted. We can't just send him down without a replacement.
They'll just have to make due with Erik Davis who was placed on the 40-man roster just for this purpose.
Unlucky BABIP there. Darn. Right at Rollins.
Tracy due another pinch homer
Nats need some clutch. Horrible horrible horrible pinch-hitting appearance from Tracy.
Nats 28th or worse in all batting stats. No room for bad pitching with those numbers. This team just not very good. Time for change.
Drew had like 43 saves not that long ago. That just could not have been an accident as we only won 80 games. He is not right, but I hate to write him off after surgery, a traumatic experience and a major change in roles. No margin for error here for anyone struggling. We are going to need him. How upside down is our world right now that HRod has better numbers than Storen? This is a strange game. So much for three runs being enough.
BABIP just robbed us big time. Lombo's hit was right at Rollins and Span's to Mayberry. Both hit well. I've liked the hitting today, despite the score.
More unlucky BABIP. Span clobbered that ball.
Yes, the hitting is definitely better. Tonight it's the pitching. Sheesh.
Storen isn't doing it but I wouldn't trust Henry late in any game unless there was a 4 run deficit.
Small sample size but they did today and he came through. They need to continue doing what they are doing with him to get his control under control so-to-speak. They are going to need him more and more as time goes by.
Chad Tracy has one big pinch hit all year. He stinks. Everybody off that bench (minus Lombo) STINKS. The fact that Rizzo brings nobody up must mean they all STINK. We flounder around .500 while the Braves pull further and further ahead. Whats the point anymore?
Kobernus in for Moore now.
Too many role players aren't doing their jobs. Chad Tracy 1st pitch swinging, Drew Storen gives up a walk and then 2 hits, and Lombo's failed bunt attempts.
Jonathan Papelbon against Harper, Zimm and LaRoche in the ninth.
Will we ever again in my life time have a walk off win?
We flounder around .500 while the Braves pull further and further ahead. Whats the point anymore?
Patience Grasshopper. Staring on June 1st ( the magic date when such changes normally occur) the changes you seek might just occur. However, they might not be what you are expecting ...
Who you kidding? Clutch hitting is terrible. We have 10 at bats with men is scoring position only 2 score. that is good ?
We have left 6 guys in scoring position Phils have left 1 that is why we are losing.
The fact Storens last 3 gamrs have been terrible is a side note.

Yah, saw him pinch-run for him last inning.
5.5 games back. barely over .500. Os coming in who hit a ton. Braves next weekend. UGHH But hey, I saved 8 percent on my car insurance.
When are going to get a real hitting coach?
None of those things mean anything in May. Remember the Angels who were so awful? They've won 8 straight and are looking good all of a sudden. Remember the Giants in 2010? They were .500 at this point.
Just relax everyone. There are positive signs out of this game.
Peric, are you saying on June 1st things may get even uglier?
They have to decide what they are going to do about Espinosa. Whether he needs to go on the DL, hopefully get surgeries now and not wait.
Then, changes including a replacement backup at shortstop. Some of these guys have a four or five day try out. Lombo seems to be one of the very few that are aware of that possibility.
SWM, certainly can't wait 45 more days for Tracy's next big hit. His job is to get a ball to drive. That looked like a outside fastball that was a little up in the zone.
Peric, are you saying on June 1st things may get even uglier?
It got pretty ugly for me and many others when they decided to move Morse out of left-field, Harper out of center and Span in.
You never know what Rizzo might decide to do.
Sooner or later our relievers have to learn we just cannot give free passes late in games. Just killing us.
Has the culture of losing around here gotten so big that we are happy about some positives even though we lose???? HAHA "you play the game to win the game." When will everyone wakeup and realize they are not very good.
I knew Tim Timmons who we all hate would get involved.
Bryce swings at one in the dirt one of my pet peeves.
Ball should have gone to the screen instead Timmons does his pele imitation and the ball hits his foot Harpernot on first. Thn Zim singles
I am starting to think, with no evidence to back it up, that the soriano signing really got in drew's head
Big Cat text me same thin SC.
I say then Drew is weak mentally if that is the case.
Game day says. Foit outside though I guess 8 inches. i hate Tim Timmins
Doesn't FOX have a pitch-track? Would love to have seen where that Strike 3 to LaRoche really was.
So we should have bases loaded no outs, but thanks to the umpire we are 2 outs and one on! Thank u tim
Oh, poop.
Game day had it 8-12 inchesout.
I hate Tim Timmins.
Good performance by Papelbon. Their best against ours and he beat us.
Get 'em tomorrow.
I really like Davey but wasn't thrilled on his situational managing of the pitching tonight.
We should be riding the hot hand. I understand a need to get Drew into a groove, but in a tie game, Clippard has been lights out lately. He needs to be in the game at that point.
Davey has been the first to admit that he's struggling to figure out how to use the bullpen.
time for davey to go take espi with you this team is absolute garbage
As much as I hate Tim Timmins I hate Rick Eckstein.
I see no urgancy with his troops.
2 for 11 RISP. 11 left on base. 7 in scoring position.
I know Eck doesn't hit, but no evidence that he coaches during the game either.
