USA Today Sports Images The Nats and Dodgers meet again tonight in Los Angeles. |
Though Harper didn't suffer any major injuries in his collision with the wall last night, he probably needs a night (or two) off. Knowing him, I'm sure he'll be trying to convince Davey Johnson he can pinch-hit late should the situation arise.
Dan Haren gets the start for the Nationals, seeking (incredibly) his fifth win. If he can pull that off tonight, he'll have really earned it.
As you know, I'm not on this trip, but please don't let that stop you from continuing the conversation here...

Nope, I was right.
Meh, I don't mind this loss at all. I was expecting it. Haren pitched well, we had more opportunities than I thought. During the daytime, RZim and Desmond both homer and it's a tie game.
I really want to win the game tomorrow though.
tyler moore is lost. last year he didnt swing at nearly as poorly.
probably to much coaching from Eck.
This was a duel of good pitchers. Haren was very good. Kershaw was excellent when he had to. While I give Kershaw credit, many Nats batters looked like High Schoolers.
DP, I'm with you. It was good to see RZ hitting and Haren pitching well. Eury Perez got experience, Span got a rest, hopefully Harper is healing. Best you can do on a long road trip with key players out.
I expected is to win 2-1
I never expect a lost.
Davey's call will stick with me. i told, but as usual he refuses to listen.
damn Tyler more left 3 RISP. Time for him to wither shape up or ship out.
Even we were mad when Mattingly pulled Ckayton. A loss but still... Baseball and not a phillies fan in sight.
Get em tomorrow.
Had tracy pinch hit I am convinced he would have also had a k.
I don't know about an IBB to Ethier that early in the game, and it's not like Haren hit Kershaw on purpose. LaRoche and the other infielders will have to be aware Haren can't field his position well and cover for him.
I'm with you both, DP and NatsLady.
Feeling MUCH better about Haren now.
Hey- we out hit them. Harlen pitched great..Unfortunatley, Kershaw was dealing. Let's win the series tomorrow.
MNF. You've made your point .Over and over and over again. It gets old for the rest of us to keep reading it, even those of us who might agree. We get it. You don't like Eck.
Eh, Kershaw would still have pitched a shutout and we would be in extra innings wearing out the bullpen, and lose anyway. Get 'em tomorrow, they are pretty desperate bringing Greinke back this soon.
What I mean about Haren is, I feel much better that the Haren of his last few starts is the Haren we acquired, not the Haren of his first couple starts.
You might not call for IBBbut I did as Eithier has hit him like RZ hits Kershaw, so seemed obvious especially after wild pitch.
As for tge hit batter not on purpose, but deffinately only real mistake. the eithier hit was not a bad pitch.
IMO the batting issue is a self discipline issue not a technique one. Lots of people are long on trying and short on hunger. You could see hunger on Zim's face tonight and so he had himself a feast.
Actually, I thought they are starting to look better. A bit more "cohesive" if you will. Very impressed with the tremendous effort by Haren. He's making me eat my words about him losing vela.
The think to keep in mind? Most of these bench players didn't really get going until June. They were pretty terrible last season except for Tracy that had one flash-in-the-pan month-and-a-half and the Shark who came out of the gate fast last season.
As for the starters if JZimm's bat is alive and you bundle that power bat with Harper and Desmond now you've got something that will hopefully give opposing pitchers pause.
Lombo, Espy, and Perez need to learn to take walks. As does T-Mo. Makes me wonder about player development that let's these guys get away with just swinging in the minors? Especially the table setters? We saw today how a couple of walks from Desmond and LaRoche got Kershaw in trouble early. They need to dedicate an entire ST on the art of working a walk and everybody should attend.
I agree NatsLady at 12:37 and 12:39.
Do you mean RZimm, Peric?
Haren looked like the guy Rizzo hoped he was getting. Terrific effort by Dan. Even so, I didn't really expect the Nats to beat Kershaw with that lineup.
Meanwhile, Rendon had 3 more hits tonight to raise his BA to .356.
Hard to be mad about this one - Kershaw is Kershaw, and Haren made only a few slight mistakes. Good to see Zim getting hot. And the patience Eury showed in his last at bat was very impressive.
I agree that Haren looked better. I'm feeling better about him. And it was nice to see so many Curlie W hats at that park.
Johnson trying hard to be publicly supportive of Espinosa and Moore, but I thought he sounded pretty frustrated with them.
Hey, we got a great effort from Haren, and our emergency OF did terrific in the field, though no hits between them. Ryan and Adam are both looking better at the plate.Hopefully this time next week we will be playing with a full deck, in that Harper and Werth will be back in the fold.
GYFNG!!!
I think we are turning the corner boys. I expect bats to come around as SP has....
mNF - I agree, batting start should have been to attack first pitch FB not get behind. Baffled by that.
This team is only 1 game back. But it is a mediocre team. Not exciting and not very good.
Everybody needs to look at the teams batting stats. Quite pultry. This team is a hitting disgrace. What makes folks think the hitting will come around?
Just checking in. Not scoring with Kershaw pitching did not surprise me. Relieved we did not get no hit. Dodgers scoring only two is respectable. I did not see any posts that indicated our tres young uns in the outfield were letting balls fall all over the place so I guess they did ok?
For those commenting on Ethier's record against Haren, there is this, which puts it in perspective, at least for me. I'm more a believer that a pitcher can "own" a certain hitter, or a certain type of hitter than vice-versa.
