USA Today Sports Images Ross Detwiler is headed to the DL with a lingering oblique injury. |
Detwiler appeared to be good to take the mound as planned after completing a bullpen session Saturday with no issues. But while testing himself during a Sunday morning fielding drill, the left-hander felt the oblique tighten up, and team doctors decided not to take any chances.
"He went out and was doing some running and playing catch and complained," manager Davey Johnson said. "Whereas it's better than it was, it's tight, and we didn't feel like it was the best thing. ... We're not going to rush it and exacerbate it at this point."
Detwiler will be placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 16, the day after he last pitched in Los Angeles. He would be eligible to return June 1, one day before his turn in the rotation would come up again (Sunday in Atlanta).
The Nationals already had to find a replacement for Detwiler last week in San Francisco, ultimately choosing to start left-hander Zach Duke and back him up with Craig Stammen. They could choose to do the same thing this time, with no obvious qualified candidates at Class AAA Syracuse and Johnson unwilling to bring Jordan Zimmermann back on short rest.
For now, the Nationals plan to fill Detwiler's roster spot with left-handed reliever Xavier Cedeno, who will be promoted from Class AAA Syracuse in time for Monday's series opener against Baltimore. Cedeno, 26, has a 6.00 ERA in 52 career big-league games with the Astros but sports a 1.74 ERA in 10 appearances with Syracuse this season.

Never heard of Cedeno before this post.
Get better Ross. Soon.
Perhaps Stammen first this time? Or was the last outing just a warm up from Duke and he will be better now? Can't just call up anyone- need to be on the 40 man. Hope Det heals all the way. And Jayson. And Bryce!!
Abad looks like a left-handed Storen while Cedeno looks more like your traditional LOOG-y: left-handed one out guy.
Duke with Stammen right behind him again. That works for me. Otherwise, I would have to guess Ohlendorf ... and I'll be watching to see whether Tatusko can maintain his sterling stats.

They would have to decide to let Duke go at that point ... they aren't there yet apparently.
Putting recent performance aside, which AAA and AA pitchers would be lined up to pitch on Tuesday?
Seconded. Seems like he's really coming into his own this season. Hope he'll come back as good as new.

When I watch games I usually am trying to look beyond the score and watch little things. Ryan Z is a very smart base runner. He hustled out that first hit in the seventh by a whisker. Then he disrupted the play at the plate to score. He just brings so much depth to this team and is a very complete player. He has probably not unleashed his last bad throw, but he is doing all that he can to help his team. He is just a quiet , not flashy , baseball player.
Swami: Just what you'd expect of a Virginia graduate (or, at least, former student -- did he ever get his degree?). Switching sports, he's always reminded me a bit of a Jeff Lamp/Lee Raker type -- or maybe one of the Stokes brothers.
I guess I'm really dating myself by bringing up those examples.

Just a little bit...;o)
Can't agree more with Swami re Harper and Zim's heady base running today.
I would add that Solano called a heckuva game for Stras. The Phils were off-balance all day long. Now Zuki is well-rested and can go full bore tomorrow with his old battery mate, Gio. Well done Solano, and Davey for managing that issue so well.

Given that Chris Young pulled a 1 inning Yunesky Maya today getting yanked for Jeff Mandel in the second?
Ohlendorf or Rosenbaum.
Ohlendorf featured a really nasty cutter inside to left-handed hitters. Really filthy.
Have to wonder if Anthony Rendon might get promoted soon and perhaps Carlos Rivero reassigned to H'Burg after he recovers from oral surgery.
He leads the Eastern League in OPS, OBP and SLG. He's fourth in batting average. Second I guess in triples.
Looks to me like he's ready to go to Syracuse any day now.
Cedeno: when you're bringing up Astros rejects you're hitting the absolute bottom of the barrel.
@Eugene I believe he is more like Othelle Wilson.. Span reminds me of Curtis Staples
