Trade deadline day: 1 hour to go

US Presswire file photo
Mike Rizzo may not be on his phone that much today.
Updated at 3:00 p.m.

There are, depending on which direction the wind is blowing at any given moment, 18 teams with a halfway legitimate shot at reaching baseball's postseason right now. And nearly every one of those 18 teams is looking to make -- or already has made -- a move to bolster its chances down the stretch before today's 4 p.m. trade deadline passes.

Just look at some of the National League's top contenders. The Braves tried to get Ryan Dempster and Zack Greinke, failed on both counts and then last night scooped up Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson from the Cubs.

The Dodgers pulled off a major trade last week in snagging Hanley Ramirez from the fire-selling Marlins, then late last night added reliever Brandon League from Seattle. Their NL West rivals, the Giants, got Marco Scutaro from the Rockies and now have been linked in talks to acquire either Hunter Pence or Alfonso Soriano.

The red-hot Reds are rumored to be interested in Matt Garza. While the surprising Pirates, who already traded for Wandy Rodriguez last week, burned the midnight oil last night and came away with outfielder Travis Snider.

And then there are the Nationals. They woke up this morning with baseball's best record at 61-40 and apparently no motivation to make a deal before 4 p.m. unless some too-good-to-refuse offer is handed to general manager Mike Rizzo before the deadline arrives.

How rare is it for a contending club to sit idle and watch the trade deadline pass without making a serious attempt to add a player? Pretty rare, even more so when that club hasn't been in contention during any of the previous six seasons.

The Nationals, though, like what they have right now, both from a talent and chemistry standpoint, and they also know they'll be getting a couple of key veterans back from the DL in the next few days (which could represent the equivalent of two significant trades).

So most expect the Nationals to remain quiet as this often hectic day plays out. That's not to say Rizzo might not have a change of heart and accept some last-minute offer that comes through. But the odds for such a deal seem slim at best.

If there's anything to report, though, rest assured we'll have it covered right here. Check back on this posting for updates throughout the day, right up until the 4 p.m. deadline.

9:45 a.m. -- All appears quiet so far. A lot of people have wondered all along whether the Nationals really are satisfied with their current catching situation. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe wrote this morning the Nats and Brewers have interest in the Red Sox's Kelly Shoppach. I brought up Shoppach's name last week to a team exec, who didn't sound particularly enamored with the veteran. If Mike Rizzo was going to pull off a deal for a catcher, I think he'd be more inclined to make a bigger splash and get someone with a more potent bat. That said, I still believe he'll sit pat on this one.

10:50 a.m. -- Even if the Nats don't make a deal today, they certainly will be affected by what else happens around baseball. Especially when it involves the team that is in town to open a three-game series: The fast-fading Phillies, who by multiple accounts are trading Shane Victorino to the Dodgers, continue to talk to the Orioles about Joe Blanton and by this afternoon could conceivably part ways with Cliff Lee (who is scheduled to start tonight's game). The Victorino move could be looked at two different ways from the Nats' perspective: Obviously, it would weaken an already weakened Philly lineup for this series. On the other hand, he could be a real burr in their saddle come October should they wind up having to play the Dodgers. I know we're looking way down the road there, but hey, this is the situation the Nats are in now.

12:30 p.m. -- And the big deals keep on coming ... not for the Nats but for the team they're playing the next three nights. Yes, reports now have the Phillies sending Hunter Pence to the Giants. Which means Charlie Manuel won't have two of his three regular outfielders in the lineup tonight. And yes, Stephen Strasburg is starting for the Nationals. You may want to show up or tune in to this one, folks.

1:42 p.m. -- I'm about to head out for the ballpark, so even if anything happens, you probably won't hear from me for a little bit.

3:00 p.m. -- Hello from Nationals Park, where a team wearing Phillies uniforms is taking early BP right now. Not sure how many of those players could honestly be described as "Phillies," though. Lot of new faces here today. Meanwhile, the Nats have added a veteran bench player just before the 4 p.m. deadline ... Chad Tracy, who has been activated off the DL. Corey Brown was optioned to Syracuse to make room for Tracy, who (though he wasn't picked up in a trade) still is an important piece to add to the roster right now.

Amaro is actually doing pretty well today. Shedding big contracts and adding prospects. Unfortunately for him he's got about 8 more crazy contracts to deal with.

Its unreal and luckily Ryan Howard, Utley, Rollins and Halladay should keep them buried a little longer.

Besides Mayberry, who's starting tonight in their outfield?

Polanco is hurt so they will deal him probably as a waiver claim when he returns healthy. Wonder if someone gets Cliff Lee.

As noted, my comment related to Phan reaction.

I guess Nate Schierholtz will be in the OF with Mayberry and a callup.

Sounds like maybe Dominic Brown (scratched from the Iron Pigs (AAA) lineup) and Nate Schierholz (obtained from Giants in Pence trade) if he can get here on time.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

JD said...

Ghost,

Lee contract probably to complicated to trade in mid season. I think Pierre starts in the outfield unless he too gets traded.

JD said...

No way Schirholtz makes it in time for the game tonight. He just got traded and it's a 5 hour flight.

rogieshan said...

I know it's a small sample size, but has anyone else noticed how ridiculously well Xavier Paul is doing in Cincy?

I'm all for the club staying pat for the sake of team chemistry. I just hope we have a fully healthy 25-man roster come October and that our bench players have learned to bunt.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

JD, I think Pierre is rumored to be traded also by 4:30 and Schierholtz may make it by 5th inning if he gets a private jet. Maybe Laynce Nix will be out there with Mayberry.

Can't remember the last time I can remember a reigning Division winner having a fire sale as abruptly and then trading 2 of its starting outfielders on the same day.

I have to say I am loving it!

Section 222 said...

Hey, that's a first. I think I had comment No. 222!

Leaving shortly for the Anthem soundcheck at Nats Park. Looks like it will only be 84 degrees at gametime. Nice! Our comp seats are in Section 116, Row EE. Feel free to say hello if you're in the vicinity.

He was doing extremely well in Syracuse but not even close to Corey Brown. Plus, at the time prospect Erik Komatsu was returned. Both are left-handed bats. Now Perez is in that outfield.

There was no room for him and he realized that. He seemed like a better option than Rick Ankiel given his bat but Nats management picked Ankiel again.

So, he asked for his release and signed with Cincinnati.

Don said...

Hey all. Long time no post. Do you think Billy Ripken does not liek the Nats in part becasue of how shabbily the organization treated all time O grest Frank Robinson?

Anyway, I hope Rizzo adds the back-up catcher if nothing else. Another SP might be nice as if Gio or Zimnn has any kind of bump in the road down the strech the club would be pretty thin at SP when Stras is on the shelf. We'll see.

What do they do in Philly for Hunter Pence Bobblehead day on August 21st?

It is amazing to witness the Phils' fire sale. Wow.

In 2009 I would sit at Nats Park, looking at the lineups of a Nats-Phils game, and conclude that the Phils were better than us at 8 of 9 positions on the field. It was dread. This happened when lots of other teams visited also.

What a reversal. Tonight we'll be stronger at at least 7 of 9 positions in the lineup.

I will be leading "Where's Victorino?" and "Where is Pence?" cheers, if anyone wants to join in.

peric said...

Domonic Brown recalled from AAA to replace Pence. Mayberry moves to CF. Tommy Joseph becomes the Phillie's Derrick Norris and he goes to Reading. The Phillies are copying the Nats.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

dfh21, that was Kasten who didn't get along with Frank. I think Billy think he would affect his autograph value if he jumped on the Nats bandwagon since he still earns a lot of his money in Charm Sh-ity.

Hmmm Baseball Reference everyone's favorite WAR tome said that it was a team option ... who was it that was saying they though Baseball Reference was the gospel? And Fangraphs wasn't?

Don't let the quiet fool you. Rizzo always takes it to the last minute. I am sure he has something brewing.

Everyone, with the exceptions of Stan Kasten and Sabean are copying the Nats. What the Phillies are doing makes a lot of sense. Why not strike now while the iron is hot and values are high? The new CBA inspired by the Nationals plethora of top over-slot signings has put a crimp in plans to use the draft as a vehicle to rebuild now teams must turn to trades to acquire good prospects to go with the few top prospects they might draft. Plus, there's International.

A DC Wonk said...

How'd you like to be a Cole Hamels or a Jose Reyes, signing a big contract right before a fire sale. Ouch.

Rizzo is known for driving a hard bargain and over valuing his prospects. Just Billy Beane has convinced him to part with any so far ...

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

@Don. Welcome back. Billy Ripken is just anti-Washington. It might stem from a number of factors, including the F. Robby snub by StanK. I think it's just his Baltimore axis tilting away from D.C. I think he's extremely knowledgeable otherwise; he just seems to have a blind spot toward D.C. I can understand his skepticism about the Nats for the first month or two of the season. But we've played 101 games and have the best record in the majors. I think the Nats deserve a little more praise than his backhanded good-little team comment last night. He's fast losing credibility with me.

There are nervous GMs right now as the waiver wire trades doesn't give GMs the same leverage.

Down to liar's poker and seeing who will blink first on all the sales.

I truly believe that the Phillies weren't sellers until they were swept by the Braves this week. How quickly things change and I wish that franchise more bad luck in the future because their fanbase sucks.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago reporting Dempster would approve trades to NYY, Dodgers and Texas.

No mention of Nats which could be easily explained as they have NO interest in him.

JD said...

Pirates acquire Gaby Sanchez. Nice pickup and more dumping by the Marlin Carpet beggars.

peric said...

Zach Cox to the Marlins? I am pretty impressed with some of the moves the Marlins, Astros, and Phillies have made ... not to mention the Cubs and RedSox.

The Nats will have some real competition at the top very soon. I was hoping the Phan busses would disappear into the sunset ... no such luck it seems. And the Marlins are rebuilding themselves the right way as opposed to what they tried to do in the offseason which was pretty ridiculous..

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Marlins just traded Edward Mujica to the Cardinals.

JD said...

Ghost,

I don't think so re the Phills. They had to shed payroll to avoid a huge payroll tax. I don't think Amaro is foolish enough to have thought that they were in the race before the Brave series.

Guess he is figuring Brown is better off playing everyday ... but then so is Tyler Moore who needs reps in the outfield.

No defensive replacement for Bernadina and Harper until Werth gets recalled. Have to figure Tyler Moore gets optioned next.

Certainly after the season they had to do something. Its just great to watch. Pierre should be traded soon.

Papelbon made a great choice going there. That guy fits so well with their fanbase.

Again, I'm lovin' it!

From the Phila. Inq.

WASHINGTON — Reality will sink in sometime around 7 p.m. Tuesday when the team with baseball's best record opposes another now playing for nothing in 2012. The Nationals and Phillies have traded places, and it is so fitting they meet on this day, when the white flag was raised in Philadelphia.

peric said...

Soriano, Garza, and Dempster still up in the air for Cubs. I wonder about the Nats jumping in there on Garza not Dempster. He's only 28 and would make a nice replacement for EJax if he is planning on departing.

JD said...

'Soriano looks headed to the Tigers to join the Prince'.

Add Victor Martinez and you have 5 DH's in that lineup.

Soriano is in excellent shape and has been fielding better. He's not a DH yet.

Jonathan Broxton from Royals to Reds.

Nats have improved. They just swapped Chad Tracy for Corey Brown. Not sure that's an improvement though ... Davey is taking a big risk given all the moves the contenders have made ...

The good news is they haven't lost any of the future ... but the Nats could end up further down in terms of top franchise's prospect wise. Two or three teams have improved themselves dramatically in terms of prospects.

Pretty close to Giggleman's Islands and Blue Wahoo land.

From what I read about Zach Cox he won't hit enough to play 3rd base and he's not a good enough fielder to play 2nd. Not a great prospect.

A better way to look at it, imho, is in the following way:

The Nats, a team with the best record in baseball despite having the youngest teams, and thus awesome future potential, gave up nothing.

And, besides, we're essentially adding Werth to the team. At no extra cost.
