Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER The Nats will be well-represented in tonight's Midsummer Classic at Kauffman Stadium. |
And yes, if you're a Nationals fan, you really have legitimate reason to worry about home-field advantage in this year's World Series.
The way things are set up, the Nationals' three All-Star representatives could significantly impact this game. Tony La Russa plans to use Gio Gonzalez in the second inning and Stephen Strasburg in the third inning, so they'll get to face the American League's stacked starting lineup. Bryce Harper, meanwhile, figures to enter sometime in the middle innings and perhaps get some key late at-bats if the game's outcome is still in doubt.
So buckle up and settle in for what's always a fun night of baseball. I'll have live updates and analysis throughout...

8:10 p.m. -- OK, we are just about ready to begin. Nice pregame pomp and circumstance, as always. Maybe I'm a softie, but the All-Star player introductions are always my favorite moment. Every player gets his moment in the sun, whether it's Chipper Jones in his final All-Star Game, Billy Butler in front of his Royals fans or Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez together for the first time as Nationals. Good stuff.
8:18 p.m. -- And we are underway on a 90-degree night in Kansas City. Justin Verlander fires a strike to Carlos Gonzalez to being the 83rd Midsummer Classic.
8:37 p.m. -- And just like that, the NL takes a 5-0 lead. Yes, 5-0. Melky Cabrera -- and by the way, where did his remarkable season come from? -- sent a one-out single to left. Ryan Braun then crushed a double off the right-field wall, bringing Cabrera (neon orange shoes and all) in to score the night's first run. Verlander -- who let that bum start this game? -- walked Carlos Beltran and Buster Posey to load the bases, and then Pablo Sandoval -- yes, Kung Fu Panda -- tripled everyone home with a drive off the right-field wall. Add an infield single from Dan Uggla and you get 5-0 in the top of the first. From his skybox, I believe Ted Lerner just called the White House to see if Barack Obama is available to throw out the first pitch before Game 1 of the World Series.
8:55 p.m. -- Matt Cain was fairly efficient in the bottom of the first, allowing only Derek Jeter's leadoff infield single. So he'll return for the bottom of the second. That means Gio Gonzalez will have to wait a little longer before entering. Joe Nathan, meanwhile, cruised through the top of the second, so it remains 5-0 NL entering the bottom of the second.
9:02 p.m. -- Boy, Cain was quite good. Wound up retiring six of seven batters faced. Now Gio is warming in the pen for the third inning. Strasburg should follow.
9:07 p.m. -- Heeeeere's Gio! He'll face Mike Napoli, Curtis Granderson and Derek Jeter in the bottom of the third. The NL still leads 5-0.
9:15 p.m. -- Nicely done, Mr. Gonzalez. Retired the side on 11 pitches, striking out Napoli on a curveball, getting Granderson to fly out weakly to left and getting Jeter to ground out weakly to second. So now Strasburg will get to face Robinson Cano, Josh Hamilton and Jose Bautista (with Prince Fielder waiting in case someone gets on base). Buckle up for that, boys.
9:24 p.m. -- And heeeeere's Strasburg! And he'll get to pitch with an 8-0 lead thanks to Matt Holliday's RBI single and Melky Cabrera's two-run homer off Matt Harrison.
9:34 p.m. -- Well, Strasburg has had sharper innings than that before, but he'll take the end result. He threw only eight of 17 pitches for strikes, but he got Hamilton to ground into a double play and then thought he had Bautista looking at a 3-2 curveball on the inside corner, only to be frustrated by Gerry Davis' strike zone. Thanks to a nice Braun catch of Fielder's line drive to left, Strasburg enjoyed a scoreless inning.
9:44 p.m. -- Welcome to the All-Star Game, Bryce Harper! Show us what you've got! And he did, drawing a full-count walk off Jered Weaver, then tagging up from first base on a fly ball to deep left field, then getting caught in a rundown on a comebacker to the mound. Kind of a real Bryce Harper inning there. He'll take over in left field as we head to the bottom of the fifth, the NL still leading 5-0.
9:52 p.m. -- Aaaand Harper just lost a routine fly ball in the lights. Threw his arms out as the ball landed 10 feet behind him. Sadly, that's not the first time that's happened to him this year. Remember Cincinnati?
10:06 p.m. -- At this point, the only question is whether the AL is going to score a run tonight. They'll have a tough time doing it against R.A. Dickey in the bottom of the sixth.
10:17 p.m. -- Dickey did struggle a tad in the sixth, giving up a leadoff single and then plunking Konerko. But he got out of it unscathed. So it remains 8-0 heading to the seventh, with Harper leading off.
10:21 p.m. -- Not a great AB from Harper against A's rookie Ryan Cook. He struck out on three pitches, watching an 0-2 fastball over the outside corner. Harper noted yesterday how bad he's been in previous amateur and minor-league All-Star games. Well, he's continuing the trend tonight.
10:41 p.m. -- The early offensive fireworks from the NL were fun, but there's been precious little action since then. The NL hasn't done much against the AL bullpen, and the AL lineup has done absolutely nothing against the NL pitching staff. We're heading to the bottom of the eighth of what remains an 8-0 game.
11:00 p.m. -- The top of the ninth ends with Harper in the on-deck circle, so barring an eight-run rally by the AL, he'll finish 0-for-1 with a walk and a strikeout.
11:17 p.m. -- It's over. The National League routs the American League, 8-0, to win the 83rd All-Star Game. And Game 1 of the World Series officially can be at Nationals Park now.

Come on boys, time to deliver on the big stage.
Go, GIO! Go, STRAS! Go, BRYCE! Go, NAT(ional Leaguer)S! Nice of LaRussa to put our guys in semi-early so that I can go to bed at a decent hour. ;-)
Hope Harper gets a shot to impact the game.
A lot of weight has been placed on home field, etc. Maybe that's because we are a NL team. If past history shows anything, however, it is that first time world series teams don't do very well. Four have done it since 2000--Rangers, Rays, Astros, Rockies. Their collective W-L record is 2-16.
Thank god they are going early!
Agree with 1A! GYFNLG!!!!
Bryce is all over MLB Network right now.
Oldguy, the past is not prologue. That's all I'm saying. Thee guys are different in all kinds of ways.
Cooking up some dogs and sauerkraut (first I've ever purchased except on a hot dog) now.
GYFNLG!
Bryce is about to be interviewed by Harold Reynolds on MLB Network.
ANd now GIO and Stras!
MicheleS, that was a great segment. Now got Stras and Gio with Sean Casey. P90X vs P45. LMAO
Showing some personality from Stras and Bryce. Totally ripping on Millar's hair and Casey's P45
Do like that Gio was giving Jordan some love
Just saw amanda with Gio!
There's Amanda Comack with Gio, Stras and Mrs. Lerner
MicheleS, I must be on tape delay
Okay after that interview, I like Michael Bourn
Wow, Mets just took a hit. Dillon Gee to the DL with a blood clot in his shoulder.
In other NL East news, Ben Sheets will start for the Braves on Sunday.

Had a rare chat with Ted Lerner on field during BP. Suffice to say, is thrilled with #Nats play so far, glad patience has paid off
Adam Kilgore@AdamKilgoreWP
Ted and Annette Lerner watched BP from the field, posed for pictures with Strasburg, Gio. Owner and wife head over heels for Harper, team.
Amanda Comak@acomak
#nats owner Ted Lerner, his wife Annette, and their daughter Marla Tannenbaum on field during BP. All effusive w/praise for this #Nats team.
Good.. Uncle Ted can open the wallet and sign all our guys.
Oldguy, past is not prediction. Or if you want to look at lessons from recent WS AND playoffs, it's that teams with better pitching win. Not only does a Gio-JZimm-EJax rotation on straight quality stack up against anyone else's -- and there's our BP with Druuuu back -- but they're all demonstrably rubber-armed, not likely to fade in October after a long season.
Not counting chickens with 79 games left, just assessing what we could do based on what we see and have now. And of course, acknowledging that You Can't Predict Baseball.
Chipper will not ever be a motivational speaker
MicheleS, I thought it was good, not great by Chipper. His story of Bryce's BP line drive almost killing his kid was kind of a strange diversion on his message.
George Brett.. good motivational speaker!
Gonat.. Chipper was meandering.. Brett was on point with message about winning game.
Brett's message about beating the Yankees dropped a few jaws, going huh?
Mike Trout doesn't look very tall
MicheleS, Erin Andrews is tall with those heels. I bet Trout is 5'11"
Talk about genuine, Trout was gushing like a fan talking about sitting next to Jeter during a meal. That was cool.
BTW, Trout is officially listed at 6'1"
That's like saying Altuve is 5'7"
Absolutely no way.
But now maybe we know why Chipper seems to have such a chip on his shoulder about The Kid. Pun possibly intended.
Nice to see the KC crowd give Chipper some love.
How does Phillie have 3 allstars?
Nice Rousing Cheer for our boys!
Our trio is looking good!
A special All-Star GYFNG!!
Enjoy the game, everybody.
Excited!!
I have on my Gio Blue Shersey covered by my brand spanking new Byrce Alternate Blue/Stars & Stripes authentic jersey.
I don't wan't to look at my credit card statement this month
This is weird. As some of you know, I hate All-Star games, all sports. Just exhibitions in my mind. But for some reason, I just got goosebumps watching our trio getting introduced. Maybe it's the thrill of watching the kid soak it in. Maybe it's all the work Jesus did to rehabilitate himself to get here. Or maybe it's just Gio's infectious smile. But I am totally pleased, and weirdly so.
Like so many things this season, as we're so fond of saying here, I didn't see that coming.
This guy can't sing for [[[[squat]]]]. That was flat.
Welcome to fanboyland, Sunshine. The water is great, come on in.
Hey, Tim, ask Ichiro how hot it is in KC.
Tell me Trout and Harper aren't part of the new face of the MLB. Every intro, there they are!
Thanks, My Gorsehacken Sofa, don't mind if I do.
Just checked in and saw the lineups announced. Bryce seemed to get a pretty good welcome, Stras got less, but I swear there were a lot of gasps of pure awe mixed in. ;-)
Loved the booing of Cano - next year you can bet the host team gets a rep in the HR Derby.
Where did you see Chipper and Brett give their pep talks? I rewound the Fox-cast and couldn't find it.
Ehay2k.. MLB Network for the pep talks, You will no doubt see them on the web site within the next 24 hours
And there goes the no-hitter!
SWEET we already have the lead!
TY MicheleS! Also, why is this a very fresh-smelling ASG?
No damn Fish! (That's for you, Natslady.)
Look who is drinking the Koolaid
Barry Svrluga@barrysvrluga
Nationals a step closer to hosting Game 7.
Gonat, yes, MLB is certainly embracing Harper but a marketing exec told me Madison Ave isn't as quick to replace Verlander, Mauer and Jeter in national advertising.
Under Armour put up a congratulations picture of Bryce on his All Star selection and we're deluged with nasty and stupid comments.
I think Bryces popularity is increasing but he is followed by plenty of haters.
Svrluga, uhhh, Game 1 and 2
MicheleS, better editing of the speech by FOX
Ichiro and Pujols not in ASG for the first time in their MLB careers. Sad!
Come on Posey! Smack a 3 run HR
ha ha on the Fish. Gotta go, maybe I will be able to hear some of the game on the radio. GO National League!

Pujols wasn't in the All Star game last year.
In the words of our fearless leader:
SWEET FANCY MOSES! KUNG FU PANDA JUST DROVE IN 3!
Verlander looks tight, like he's excited.
OH my! a bad throw from the Captain! THIS IS AWESOME!
Loving this! 5-0! Game 1 in DC is looking like more of a possibility.
Give Mr. Lerner some more Kool-Aid!
How sweet is this! Because Ian can't be there, and because this game is giving US home field advantage, all runs by the NL tonight are being rewarded with honorary Ian Desmond cookies. I'm looking for very fat dogs by tomorrow. Very fat!
why would you name your dog Maris?
erased the negative post i was writing abt posey and sandoval.
Well done NAT(ional Leaguer)S.
ehay, I think Verlander just did what he did early in his career. He went for Velo and sacrificed movement. He hit 101 on the radar.
Prince just justified why we didn't sign him. Well, that was one of the reasons, and yes, Jeter made a bad throw, but your first baseman has got to catch that one.
Man.. I love our beats:
Mark Zuckerman@MarkZuckerman
5-0 NL in the 1st. Ted Lerner's calling the White House right now to see if Obama's available to throw the first pitch before Game 1.
Adam Kilgore@AdamKilgoreWP
There could be Game 7 of the World Series and a presidential election within one week in D.C.
Okay.. KC fans need to get over the Cano hate.
I can picture MicheleS with multiple computer screens with NI, Twitter, MLB Gameday, and a TV screen with the game video and XM audio.
On Prince- if he can't catch it, why can't he block ANY throw with his body? Just saying.
Prefer ALR because he can carry a team with his bat AND his glove.
Ghost.. No XM but everything else.. But the TV Screen is 55 inches in HD Glory!!
MicheleS has a chip in her head - she gets everything streamed straight to the cortex baby!
Ehay2k writs.....Prefer ALR because he can carry a team with his bat AND his glove.
Which is why it's great we have ALR and not Prince.
That play Furcal made was Ian like in it's dexterity.
Adam Kilgore @AdamKilgoreWP
Such a sucker for this stuff. Chipper says Harper almost killed his kid with a line drive. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=22978231

When the Nats were 20 games out of 1st place at the All Star break, I had no interest in the All Star game.
Now sitting in 1st Place, GO NATIONAL LEAGUE!
Looks like Cain to start the 2nd. Mr Perfect better deliver.

Forgot about how Nats fans were ready to ship ALR away in a trade to get Prince.
Cain is back out for second? I thought GG or SS might take over.
Faraz, LaRussa is going for the Killshot. Wants all the pitchers ready and to shut the AL down
Gonat, thanks for correcting. Actually both Ichiro and Pujols missed it last season. Still sad!
Cain locked in. Unbelievable how underrated this guy is!
actually pujols missed his second season also. no idea how when he got 2nd most MVP votes in 2002.
anyways, price retires votto.
Go Gio go!
And heeeeeeeeeeeere's GIO!!
Go get em!
I hope no one missed the part where FOX put Cain in AL.
Um, did McBuckCarver just say the Nats are in "first place in the NL East"? Because last time I checked, it was the entire NL!!!!!
No Respect.

Don't look at Ichiro's stats on a full stomach. His .288 OBP this year is just awful.
Napoli strikes out against GG
I am so nervous for him...
Where has that been from Gio in the last 45 days?
GREAT HOOK!!!
Gonat, I know Ichiro is not performing to his level (like last season) and does not deserve to be there but it is sad to see such a great hitter in decline.
Grandersopn flies out to Braun.
DO NOT GET HURT!
I am so so so in the tank for Gio.
Jeter grounds out to Uggla and GG's perfect frame is over. Brilliant!!!
So it will likely be SS against Cano, Hamilton, and Bautista; three of the best hitters in AL. I think Bautista did homer off of SS in one game at Rogers in June.
anyways, should be interesting.
Gio just faced 3 All Stars and pitched like he did early in the season. Efficient inning with great use of the hook!
I think 11 pitches with 7 strikes!
I am just gushing with pride!
Gonat, totally agree. That's what got us all to fall in love with Gio.
Nine pitches, three outs. Very efficient by Gio.
This is JUST Great! Melky just CLOBBERED ONE! Stras gets an 8-0 lead!
WOW NL is killing AL right now.
This is awesome! 8-0
Is there a Mercy rule in the ASG?
You just KNOW that Bryce is dying to get a knock now, because it looks so easy tonight. :-)
DO not nibble.. please get these boys out.
oh yeah!!
what is his pitch count?
awesome!!!
A little high and tight to Joey Bats
Stras got Squeezed there.
that was a strikeout. come on!
I never thought I would say this. I love Ryan Braun.
what, my daughter just asked about the mercy rule, too.
Stras is showing them, too! Thank you Braun.
Why did Stras say no one has talked to him about the innings limit? Is it like when you ask your kid how school was today, and they say, "I dunno," because the don't want to talk?
thank you Braun! Anyways, SS had Joey Bats since the first pitch which was not as tight as he thought. I actually thought that might have come back in the strike zone.
anyways, Bautista is playing very cautiously, field and at bat.
Wanna see Harper next.
Weak oppo flyout induced by Stras. Nice outing by our boys. Can we get a little taste of Hitterishness?
Ump got fooled like the batter on that Strike 3 pitch to Jose Bautista. Ridiculous
Not what...ehay. Autocorrect. Sheesh!
BRYCE!!!
Nats on display tonight people! Ump didn't help Stras and the idiots in the booth are asleep talking about Tweeting instead of watching the game. Never showed their Pitch Track. Sheesh
Bryce! We're using up all our guys!
Lucky Bryce. He gets to face Jered Weaver.
Bryce,
Those are ugly shoes.
J
BB for BRYCE! That is so great!
And Tags and goes to 2nd! Got to Love BRYCE!
Everybody, welcome to Bryce Haroer! That's what he does for a living!
Or, a walk and a tag up to go to second. Even better!
Nice steal but he would have been out, had they tried. anyways good show so far by Nats and NL.
Sigh, only nineteen.
Prince sure would have looked nice in a Nats uniform. That guy can just plain hit!!! ALR is a decent player and all, but hardly in the same category as the Prince. Too bad V-Mart got hurt or he would be in this game in a Nationals uniform.
OK, I can go to bed now...
Well, got pegged there, but that's okay. it's run until you are tagged out as FP would say
Yup. F&I when Prince booted that throw from Jeter, we were all so sad that ALR was on our team. NOT!
F&I, Price is a fine hitter, but not at his asking price. ALR is a much better value. Plus, he is very even keeled, which is much better for our youngsters to emulate.

Twilight in KC people. Take it easy on Harper.'
Umm Apparantly Bryce is mic'd up. Can't wait to hear the BLEEEPS on that play
Wait MicheleS, they even bleep the live streams to your chip?
MicheleS, you won't hear it. The only words they can play is WHAT THE
Ehay2K.. yup.. Bleeps came through loud and clear on the chip. If Kershaw walks this guy I will not be happy
PHEW!!! he caught it!
I'm glad for the second chance! Phew.
Mean announcers:"Fly ball to left.- does he see it?"
I think that was a gimmy from Kinsler.
MicheleS, LOL, I was thinking the same thing.
Bryce on deck again? good times ahead
Yes, Michele. That definitely looked intentional.
If Dickey gives up a run, then i think there is a NYM conspiracy.
And Chipper was laughing about it all the way down the first base line.
Great to see AL being shutdown. They can claim to be better based on interleague but NL pitching is clearly more than capable of taking care of AL bats. I think NL will be superior as long as they are more pitching oriented.
Nah, no conspiracy tonight.
Pretty impressive K of Trumbo and GIDP for Miggy.
I fear Harper will still be 0-fer in All Star games after tonight.
hey, 2 for 3 is excellent for Nats.
Why can't people just sing a song? What's with all the extra syllables and lisping? Yikes.
Let's play ball.
Besides it ain't over for Harper I think. He can still make a sensational play in the field and make up for it.
Ehay2k.. he is o-fer all the AllStar games he has been in so that won't be a big deal to him
Stras is tweeting the game right now
MicheleS, I said Games, so yes, that's what I was thinking. But in the Show, a knock would be a good thing.
Ehay.. he might get another shot in the 9th
Did anyone get the rain/flash floods tonight? We saw a few minutes of drizzle tonight out in Loudoun, so hope you all are okay.
I'm hitting the sack,, confident that the Serious starts in Nats Park in a few months. G'nite imaginary friends!
Michele, it rained and stormed like a ... well, it rained really hard. Lots of lightning and wind, too, here in Shaw, about 2 hours ago, I think.
No real rain in this part of Arlington MicheleS. Hoping Harper gets a chance to sprinkle a hit in the ninth.
Ron Washington thought courtesy of the chip:
CRAP, I am going to lose again in 7 games to the Nats in DC
Thanks for asking, though, Michele.
Gotta get me a chip!
Sofa, saw all the pics on Twitter about the flash floods in DC. would hate for any imaginary friends to suffer through that.
McCarver makes me gag - Calls an 81mph pitch a "tailing fastball" - except that Rodney throws 98 for his heater.
I have a feeling that we will see a bunch of pitching changes this inning. Just so everyone gets in
Dunn needs an AB!
We have a GasCanrahan sighting!.. Lord let's hope no one lights a match
no Dunn? COME ON!
Is a nine-run lead enough for GasCanrahan?
I meant eight. Getting late early.
Wild pitch, Hanrahan.
This is all looking so familiar.
Guy could have 60 saves this year. I don't miss him. At all.
OMG.. Really? Joel.. what the HECK are you doing? Did Henry possess him suddenly!
How do you root for Paplebon here? Is it possible?
And how do you not play Dunn? Really?
With a 8 run lead, I won't but I can root for someone to make an awesome play.
And we will see you for Game 1 of the World Series DC! Let's GO Nats!
oh.. and WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
G'night all. Remember tonight if we make it to the WS. Sorry, WHEN we make it.'
Hanrahan looks like he put on some weight.
Even if Chipper did have one before, Jane, it doesn't sound like he has one now. See quotes below, from a piece on the Braves site:
"Seeing Chipper and his last All-Star Game is going to be a thing for the ages," Nationals 19-year-old outfielder Bryce Harper said. "I can tell my kids I saw Chipper Jones' last All-Star Game. It's kind of sad, but he has had a great career and been the face of that Braves' franchise for so long. He's an All-Star and a Hall of Famer."
When told of Harper's comment, Jones smiled and opined that the historical significance of this All-Star Game might have more to do with the fact that it will be the first of what could be countless selections for Harper.
"I get to be a part of his first one, the first of many," Jones said. "He's a classy kid. I got a chance to meet his dad earlier today. Bryce has made a huge impact on a very good ballclub. I'm glad he made it."
Oops, meant to include this:
