Beltway Baseball - Spring training preview

The big day has nearly arrived. Several players have already begun arriving in Viera for the start of spring training, and all pitchers and catchers will report by Sunday. So will all the beat writers, including yours truly.

But before packing my bags and getting things in order back here at home, I joined CSNwashington.com's Chase Hughes and the Washington Times' Amanda Comak for a special, super-sized, spring training preview edition of Beltway Baseball. We touched on just about everything you could want to know about the Nationals heading into camp, from the state of the rotation to the state of the lineup to the state of Bryce Harper's attempt to make the Opening Day roster.

Enjoy the show, and enjoy the final countdown to baseball season!

I heard there's a chance the Hagerstown Class A team might move to Winchester, VA, once a new ballpark is built. The Winchester City Council met on this issue a couple of nights ago. Anyone hear anything?

You and Amanda need to take Chase with you to ST: he is so damn pale.

Safe travels, Mark and Amanda. Seems like just yesterday that Mark was headed down there with his cardboard sign.

Thanks for the nice, long video. Lots to cogitate on there.

p.s. Hope you're not coming down with something with that cough, Mark. Hydrate for your flight. :-)

I'm in a ticket share situation for the Caps. Our group leader said he got a 2nd email correcting the first one. We are still looking at a $280 per person increase. It doesn't sound like a lot but that is $850 the year before and over $1200 before that. We have time but my first thought I told him is that I am out.

Looking forward to your spring training coverage live from Viera. Who has already reported to camp?

... Gary Carter died today, and I feel very sad about that. 'The Kid' was incredibly positive, over-the-top cheerful and upbeat. But none of that was fake; he was the real deal and I for one am thankful he wore a Curly M on his cap into the HoF.

... Rest In Peace Gary.

Go Nats!

Go Expos!!

I am sure that some of the pitchers are there already. I think natsjack said Detweiler and JZinn were there. Haven't had a chance to comment on the earlier pitcher thread. My feeling is that someone will start the the season on the dl with a mysterious ailment that will allow the team to avoid making a move. Either that or some other team will lose a pitcher and be desperate. We have six weeks for this to shake out. Every pitcher in mlb is not going to stay healthy through all of st. Rizzo will listen for news and then pounce.

Just saw that on MLB Network. 57 years old. Didn't know him but heard he was a great guy.

Gary Carter? I would not think so. Pudge Fisk maybe -- career high HR's at age 37?? Every day catcher into his mid 40's? Yeah, right, he was clean.

Man, people either loved the Kid or hated him when he played. I loved the guy. He was always having fun out there and he was head and shoulders above every other C in the game for years.

Cool story how he held up the team bus sometimes signing autographs for kids.

Condolences to Carter's family, friends, and fans.

So fun! Thank you, Sebastian! I loved having a smart woman talking baseball, I have to say. I REALLY loved seeing and hearing Mark.

I loved Carter, too. Saw him play and am grateful. He was the first player I noticed really caring about the fans, in a non self-aggrandizing way. I'm glad he is, in a way, part Nat.

MOSTLY I am grateful and inordinately jazzed that ST is soooooo close. This is the last weekend for many months that I don't have baseball to kick me around.

THANK YOU MARK for this great site. No matter how famous you get, I hope we will always have this.

My condolences to Carter family.

Enjoyed the extended ST preview. Very excited about baseball. hopefully a job in DC means more Nationals games.

Well, the video isn't working for me. Or am I missing something? I get that the Rav4 is a great car over the Honda alternative but, no talking heads pontificating about all things Nationals.

Les: Not sure what's causing the problem on your end, but I just clicked on the video and the show came on fine right after the advertisement.

Thanks for the nice long video! (Cleared the cache, disabled the ad blocker, tried it twice, and it worked just fine.)

Man, I loved me some Gary Carter.

(and, hey, just two weeks till I'm down there!)

Les, just guessing here, but there is a low-bandwidth option. Might be worth a shot.

Thanks so much for getting us through the winter, Mark!

I did a calculation based on expected playing time for each player and plausible WAR rates, and my estimate for wins is 91.8. I think we have a really good shot at a Wild Card. Let's see how it plays out.

Enjoy Florida!

It'll be that last 0.8 of a win that makes the difference! ;-)
