This afternoon, Werth finally decided to get into the act himself in what ultimately proved to be a fruitless attempt to get Teddy across the finish line first.
When the middle of the fourth inning between the Nationals and Braves arrived, Werth and center fielder Rick Ankiel waited around for the presidents to emerge, then tried to hold off Thomas Jefferson from taking the lead. Several members of the Nationals bullpen also joined in, leading to a scrum of flailing bodies and giant foam heads in the right-field corner.
Alas, Teddy fell down and never had a chance to pull off the victory. Neither did any of his fellow presidents, who gave up on the race and departed through the stands.
Werth ultimately decided to jog across the finish line himself, and with arms raised was declared the winner of the race (even though he didn't seem willing to accept the designation).
"Well, if Teddy can't win, then no one wins in my book," Werth said following the Nationals' 4-1 victory over Atlanta. "I'm the last remaining member of the Bull Moose Party, I guess. I don't really know what else to say."
Asked if he and his teammates had informed the racing presidents of their plan in advance, Werth played coy.
"I can't really comment," he said. "When you stage a coup, it's better to keep it quiet."
With only Sunday's home finale remaining, Abe Lincoln currently leads Jefferson 30-29 in the season race standings. George Washington has clinched third place with 23 victories.
Teddy, as always, remains winless.

Debbie Taylor has to be one of the worst field reporters of all time. The question she asked Ivan Rogrigus today was one of the dumbest of all time. (Question - Did you enjoy playing today over being in the dug out? He should have answered; "No, when I'm in the dug out I can drink gator aid, stay cool and won't go home tired. Who wants to play when you get paid for just sitting around.)
With our home builder, Bob Carpenter, I wish the home industry would get better so he can go back into his profession (a Carpenter). Bob just say it was an inside or outside pitch or the pitch was low or high. I don't watch the game to hear his verbage and style. What ever happened to the Red Barber's, Mel Allen's, Bob Wolfe's. I know most of them are dead, but they had class and just called the game.
Then we have FP who always states, when a pitcher come in, he throws a 90+ Fast Ball, a curve at ?, a sinker and change up at ?. Who cares I can't tell on TV the speed and I can see when the pitch breaks or sinks. I don't need to know the speed of each pitch. Just the exceptional ones.
Give me an announcer who just calls the game and doesn't want to be part of the game and be noticed. The umpires wanting to be seen is bad enough.
Sounds like you want an announcer who DOESN'T call the game... Do what I do with football games.... Turn down the sound, and put some favorite tunes on... I can live without the bloviation....

No I want someone to just call the game and not try and be more important than the game. I wish we could go back before Janet Jackson (Super Bowl half time) and listen to the radio announces. They are much better! The TV is on a delay with radio now!
Ladson has an interesting quote from RJohnson about Peacock. Maybe it's nothing, but maybe it indicates a plan with respect to next years starting five. In announcing that Peacock will not be used out of the bullpen for the remaining games, Johnson said the followng:
""He has done everything I've asked of him,' Johnson said. 'He impressed everybody, not only in our organization, but in baseball. As far as I'm concerned, his year is done.'"
Anyone else here think that the part about Peacock having impressed other organizations might mean something?
I'm with Jayson on this. Let Teddy win, and make a big fat statement to all the fans AND baseball, on our last home game.

woooo - that was one fun game! Loved Wang's hit, also Ankiel's catch. Thought it must have been Wang's first, as I noticed them take it out of play and toss it to the Nats dugout. Also loved the two Pudge throws to nail runners. Didn't hear the interview after but did he happen to say to Debbi "I'm not going to lie to you. Those were both missiles that I threw."?
I thought it was kinda funny when Werth took the race. Hope that this foreshadows the end of Teddy's losing ways. After all, that's two games in a row and Werth and the 'pen denizens took matters into their own hands. (Though I seem to recall a game back in the day where the 'pen guys got into the action. I think Rauch was still with the team?)
(Also, I'm undefeated when wearing my silver-on-white curly w tee at both P-Nats and big boy Nats games this year. A compulsive part of me wants to wash it so I can wear it to tomorrow's game, but that way lies madness, right? Yeah, that's what I thought. :-))
Oh, and Werth's new nickname should be El Presidente. You heard it here first.

I was at the game and I didn't see any-bush-league stuff b.s.
Either El Presidente or Hiram Johnson because he was Teddy's running mate.
Since these "races" are surely closely scripted, I wonder if there might be flak from the PR types about Werth, et al, messing with their program? I for one applaud Jayson.
I know that many folks think this gimmick is cute and harmless, but us curmudgeons consider it tiresome, insulting and juvenile and will be quite happy when it finally goes away.

What a great day yesterday was. The NATS won, Wang looked great, the Phillies lost their 7th and 8th straight and Werth lead the Rough Rider coup. Jayson and I have bonded forever. The stupid race where Teddy never wins is classic Nats brainless promotion, like the "Strasburg Strikes Again" campaign that Strasburg hates so much. I'm going to the game today and will be hoping the Rough Rider rise again.
And, for Anon at 6:15 who contributed the really ugly comments, Carpenter is a great play by play guy.

I could accept the idea of having these figures used as promotional icons; it's the "race" gimmickry which is in questionable taste.
A point of historical irony- at the time of their Presidencies, in terms of physical fitness, Teddy would have probably wiped the floor with any of the others.
