4th round pick Turnbull signs

As the clock ticks toward midnight, the Nationals have completed the first of what should be several down-to-the-wire draft pick signings.

Left-hander Kylin Turnbull, the organization's fourth-round pick in June, has agreed to a deal that includes a $325,000 signing bonus, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America.

That's about $100,000 over the MLB-recommended "slot" for the 127th overall pick in the draft.

Turnbull, a 6-foot-4 lefty with a fastball in the low-to-mid 90s who also throws a splitter, went 5-2 with a 2.47 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 80 innings for Santa Barbara Community College.

He had committed to pitch in his home state for the University of Oregon next season.

The Nationals are still working to sign their top four picks from this year's draft: First-round picks Anthony Rendon and Alex Meyer, supplemental-round pick Brian Goodwin and third-round pick Matt Purke. All contract agreements must be submitted to MLB by midnight.

Kudos to the Lerners and Rizzo for paying to make the deal.

If they sign Purke along with the three first rounders, the Nats farm system will have to be a top five group.

Jeez, seven minutes to go and no new announcements?

It's a yes on Purke, per @BaseballAmerica. Four years, big-league deal.

While we all wait in suspense, let's distract ourselves. What's everyone think of the Nats honoring the SEALS with a logo on their caps Tuesday night? I thought the Va Tech caps thing was fantastic. This somehow feels less authentic to me, and maybe a little cheesy. I'm not sure why the difference. Certainly the SEALs who died are at least as deserving of honor, if not more, than the Va Tech kids. Thoughts?

All signed. Except for Buchanan and Laxer. Guess both are headed for Ol' Miss.

Rendon could supersede Harper as the top prospect in baseball. Purke is a darkhorse for that honor as well.

@12:06, source, please?

If the rumors are true on Rendon and Purke, that could be a bigger haul than the either of the past 2 years.

Kilgore is saying a clean sweep at well above slot:

The Nationals gave Purke, the No. 96 overall pick, a left-handed pitcher from TCU, a four-year, major league deal worth roughly $4.4 million, according to a report by Baseball American’s Jim Callis.

The Nationals signed Miami Dade College outfielder and No. 34 pick Brian Goodwin to a $3 million signing bonus, according to a report by Sports Illustrated. The bonus smashes the MLB recommended slot for the 34th overall pick and matches the mark the league recommends for the third overall pick.

MLB is pissed at the Lerners right now, after Stras, Harper, Werth and now this, we are seriously costing the "good" teams a lot of money. I can't wait until this aggressiveness in the draft starts getting rewarding.

This is one of the few days that I can say to the Lerners...Well Done. No cheapskates this night. They actually sounds like they want to play with the big boys.
