US Presswire photo Jonny Gomes is available on the Nationals' bench tonight. |
"We just kind of figured out what my number would be," he said laughing, his Nationals No. 30 jersey hanging behind him. "We've still got to iron some things out. I'm just willing to do whatever it takes. ... I just left the door open to [manager Davey Johnson] and let him know I'm ready when my number's called. Whatever he's got planned for me, I'm all right with it."
Johnson himself is still trying to formalize his plan for Gomes, but it probably includes starts against left-handed pitchers, plus frequent pinch-hitting appearances late in games.
"I will communicate to him what I expect out of him, but it really goes back to players. It's how you use them," Johnson said. "Players are pretty smart. They can sense when they're needed and what their role should be to help this ballclub win. It's my job to figure out exactly what his role should be, where he's going to be best-suited for himself.

Memo to Jonny Boy:
Rent, don't buy.
Everybody, and I mean everybody, is day-to-day around here.
Saying all the right things before he runs out of DC
.211 average. batting better than stairs. great....
I think Jonny Boy's stay here will make Donovan McNabb's stay look like an epoch.
Might only be short term but after reading what Flynnie posted yesterday, I will be rooting for him. Has to be better than what Stairs gave us and from what I hear, he is another great clubhouse guy. To me, its kinda win/win. If he leaves at the end of the year we get a nice draft pick and Sunshine, we didn't give up what the Redskins gave up for McNabb and the expectations for JG are not nearly as high either. Its not a great comparison.
Have not had the greatest time these last two games but I did stay for the rally. Need LannEn to set things right tomorrow.
Go Nats
He's hitting .3-something vs. lefties, which is what he's here to do.

He's a National now which means he'll hit .13-something vs. lefties...
".3-something against lefties."
Too bad most pitchers are righties.
I don't understand this at all. Rent a mediocre player for 2 months costing two good prospects having excellent seasons in the minors? Yes we get a compensation pick if he leaves via free agency (if another team actually picks him up), but then we get an unknown prospect for two known good minor leaguers. This season is toast. Why make this move for a player who is only going to stay here this year. I'm beginning to have seerious doubts about Rizzo's moves. Remember Joel Hanrahan?! Where is Nyjer now? Yes we got Strassburg and Harper, but any dummy would pick those guys. Espinosa was a great pick. But these other moves to better the team for August and September are just stupid! Plan for 2012 and 2013.
just what they need, another Jason WerthLESS look alike and a 211 hitter, great move Phil
