Riggleman is one of two coaches picked by Bruce Bochy, who as manager of the World Series champion Giants last fall will serve as NL skipper for the July 12 game in Phoenix. He'll be joined by Kirk Gibson, manager of the host Diamondbacks.
Bochy and Riggleman's careers are closely connected. Bochy was third-base coach on the 1993 and 1994 Padres clubs led by Riggleman, then took over as manager in 1995 after the latter was fired. He wound up at the helm in San Diego for 12 seasons before moving on to San Francisco in 2007.
Riggleman spoke glowingly of his former protege earlier this week after the Nationals won three of four against the Giants.

What if the Nats totally tank like they did in 2009 and Riggleman gets fired at the ASB like Acta did? Does he still get to go?

I don't hate Riggleman at all. I'm a fellow son of Maryland. But I have to recognize a charity effort when I see it. That's what this is--charity for someone because he is associated with the Washington Nationals.
Why would anyone take 'pity' and select a manager from our team? I just don't get it. People can come up with the most stupidest reasons to bad mouth Riggs.

Ahh, yes, the All-Star Game. The most meaningful game presented for your enjoyment. Not quite as significant as catching the bridal bouquet at a wedding, but darned close.
Post is stupid because it mean nothing about baseball. The All Star game means nothing and who goes mean nothing. In past years Guzman went...Someone from every team must go by rules...It is not merit based and neither this this pick...it is stupid to congratulate someone for being picked by his friend to go to a meaningless game.....It is a pity pick and is the the past history of his participation shows that clearly. I do not hate Riggs at all and have said over and over he is a good baseball man....a lifer who would be a fine coach and has been for years...HE IS THE WORST MANAGER IN BASEBALL....his record says it all as does his comment from each loss....He has the job because he works cheap and is from the area....that will get old by June...he may well be sitting on the bench at the All Star game without a team uniform to wear.
It relates to MLB and is baseball news, regardless of one's opinion of the All-Star Game.

Right now, do the Nats have any All-Star worthy players.
I really don't see one. Zimmerman will have few ABs but could be the selection even with his slight play, assuming he does get back and perform. I do not see another full-time position player playing above average. Forget about the staff. They have been nice but a quick glance around the league shows us way over 10 All Star potential pitchers. Possibly Storen if he continues. He is helped by the fact that multiple closers being selection is in vogue. The there is still a long time before slections but the topic was started due to Riggleman's likely coaching status.

Congrats to Riggs. Well deserved and I'm happy for him. I hope he gets a contract extension. The Nats would be worse without him.
And although Contrary Boy states otherwise, the rule is that every team has to have a PLAYER on the team. Riggs selection as coach has nothing to do with it. Know your facts. If someone on the Nats cured cancer, Contrary Boy would find fault with it. After a while, if you criticize everything, your comments lose effectiveness.

I won't be whining and moaning when the Nats are in the World Series. What an ignorant comment. Riggleman hasn't had a winning season in his 12 years and yet he is All-Star worthy not just this once but two other times.
This does sound like a pity party though. I never thought I'd miss Manny Acta this much, smh, but hey, I do. Congrats to Riggs though on a job "well done".

The team had a better record last year under Riggleman than it did before under Acta. Whether or not you like Riggleman, that's a fact.
