Mattheus, 27, missed most of 2010 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He appeared in 10 rehab games in the Gulf Coast League and with short-season Class A Vermont late in the season, allowing one earned run over 11 1/3 innings.
The California native was acquired along with right-hander Robinson Fabian from the Rockies in the July 2009 trade that sent Joe Beimel to Colorado. He'll be a non-roster invitee to big-league camp next spring.
The move leaves the Nationals with one open slot on their 40-man roster, clearing space in case they sign a free agent or add a player via trade.

I know it's off topic, but I wanted to say that high among the blessings I will count this Thianksgiving...and I am not kidding ... is this blog. First to Mark, for writing it and keeping us informed, and for setting the bar so high. Nobody writing about my Nats is as even handed, as insightful or writes as beautifully. Then to Mrs. Z, for her support of him, and the endeavor. Then to all of you -- too many to list, but from whom I have learned much, laughed much, and rejoiced in the small victories that come with being a Nats fan. It's one thing to root for a team as, shall we say, "in development" as are the Nats, and to have only your (bored) family to share it with...It's a much deeper pleasure to share it with you all. I'm talking to you, various Anonymi, and NatsJack and Sunshine Bobby C and NatsFan1A and Ncognito and golfersal and Natbiscuit and the other Mark and My Sofa, and all the other various Sections and JayB too. Adam Dunn may have finally realized that his agent was lying to him when he told him there would be a bidding war for his services in free agency, starting at four years, with no DHing required. Perhaps the commission on the three year Nats offer will be Dunn's lovely parting gift to said agent.

Thanks Jane and Happy Thanksgiving to you. Lets hope that in a few weeks we have even more to be thankful for. As small a part of life as being a fan is, its still fun when your team makes things happen. I also want to thank all the various people who keep this blog even and fair but most of all to Mark for his wonderful writing. It is a talent that he shares with us and let us never take for granted what excellent work greets us just about every day. Our team might not be on top yet, but Mark has reached that goal.

Thanks, Jane B, for your eloquence and just for being here. You spoke for all of us in your support of Mark and Mrs. Z. We're all in this together, and Mark and Mrs. Z seem to embody that spirit. Mark is never mean-spirited in his coverage and even if some of us tend to get a little "hot" sometimes, his clarity of thought and calmness of spirit are always a return to sensibiilities.
